THE CELEBRATIONS
On midnight, August 5, 1962, thousands of Jamaicans packed the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, to witness the final lowering of
Britain’s Union Jack and the unfurling of the black, green and gold, to signify the birth of an independent Jamaica.
The pride experienced by Jamaicans on Independence Day, Monday, August6, 1962, is being replicated 50 years later in
2012 as Jamaicans worldwide celebrate the golden anniversary of independence.
In Toronto, a group of Jamaicans – the Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. Committee – has planned a series of events in the areas
of visual, literary, performance and culinary arts, to celebrate the island’s vibrant cultural heritage. The year-long program,
under the banner, Jump for Jamaica, will highlight the positive contributions Canadians of Jamaican heritage have made
to Canada their adopted home.
Jamaica 50 Celebration is an exciting calendar of events and installations showcasing Jamaican ingenuity– from the arts to academia to
athletics. Jamaica 50 Celebration boasts the best of the best, Jamaican-born personalities, second-and third-generation Jamaicans, as
well as friends of Jamaica, renowned experts and artistes – from Canadian communities and around the world. We invite all Canadians
and the world to experience our Jamaica 50 Celebration events and to partner with us
to celebrate in the warm, vibrant, one-love spirit that is Jamaica.

JAMAICANS IN CANADA
WHEN ACKEE MEETS CODFISH
Jamaicans in Canada: When
Ackee Meets Codfish is a
celebration of Jamaican-Canadians migrating to Canada
over the past 50 years. It documents and highlights the
contributions and achievements of Canadians of Jamaican
heritage to the country they now call home. From doctors
to lawyers to teachers, from scientists to politicians and
athletes, they have all made a positive contribution to their
adopted home and share their experiences in this book.
The title represents the meeting of the Jamaican Ackee
with the Canadian Salted Codfish; converging the items
that make up Jamaica’s national dish, “Ackee & Codfish.”

JAMAICAN RHYTHMS
Dance, Music and Talk
LOCATION
Sony Centre for the Performing Arts | June 28 2012
TICKETS
Available at Ticket Master: $35, $50, $70, VIP $150
How does a country of less than three million people have such an impact
on the world musically, culturally and creatively? JAMAICAN RHYTHMS,
a three-hour “rocumentary,” will feature Jamaica’s performance arts in its
finest forms and will answer that question.
Jamaican Rhythms tributes, the legend, Bob Marley
JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will walk through the five decades of reggae music
with icons from each decade. FAB 5, Jamaica’s hottest live band, will
present the rhythms of the 60’s; JOHN HOLT will strut through the 70’s; Reggae Queen MARCIA GRIFFITHS (member of Bob Marley’s I
Threes) will rock the 80’s; Grammy nominee KING YELLOWMAN, will chant the rhythms of the 90’s; silky smooth Grammy nominee

MAXI PRIEST will have Sony Centre swooning through 2000; and BEENIE MAN, Grammy winner and King of the Dancehall, will jump
into this decade.
Jamaican Rhythms
The decades of JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will be connected with dances and talk of the decades. From the arrival of the first European in
1492 to the 1500’s when Africans first arrived in Jamaica, a foundation was laid that has created a small nation with a performance arts
fraternity that has impacted the planet over and over again in music, folk, jazz, classical, reggae, dance, and the spoken word.
From the Bruckin Party’s parent Dinki Mini of the 1800’s through to the reggae rhythms of today, Jamaican culture has significantly
impacted the world. Lyrics and verses have told the history of our nation, cultural nuances that bring laughter to our ears and rhythms
that have soared to the top of the charts internationally. The acclaimed movement of Jamaica’s National Dance Theatre Company
(NDTC) and Usain Bolt’s dancing Gully Creepa to celebrate his Olympic & World records ricocheted across the globe, generating a vibe
that engaged Jamaicans and the millions of friends of Jamaica.
JAMAICAN RHYTHMS will play tribute to Reggae icon Bob Marley, whose international reach has touched people on every corner of the
planet. Among the top catalogue musicians in Canada today, he sits snugly between Elvis and the Beatles. Bob’s One Love, the song of
the last century, is an anthem of peace and love which flows from the lips of millions of people. Our Folk Music has been well-preserved
and remains engaging and current.
“As we celebrate our 50th year of independence, in a
three-hour “rocumentary,” we will showcase the best of
our performance arts as we present highlights of the
finest works of our first 50 years of independence,
reinforcing the Jamaica brand”- Denise Jones

PERFORMING ARTS AT ITS BEST
PERFORMING ARTS
“Presenting and showcasing the creativity of Jamaica
and Jamaican-Canadians”
Jamaicans are tallawah. From the very beginning we have fought for what we believe
in and our national heroes have helped to carve an identity now known the world over.
But where did it all start? The majestic blue waters washed a variety of cultural
influences to our shores. In carving cultural or individual identity, one cannot forget
the past. "Di calling of the Abeng, the Bruckins of Emancipation, the Kumina downbeat,
the Pocomania upbeat, the torso isolations of Dinki Mini and Gerrehbenta giving rise to
the mento. "Out of Many, One People" moving into the next 50 years.
Jamaica’s artists have always been groundbreaking while showcasing their creativity on the international stage.
We eat, live and sleep the culture of our people. The Performing Arts Committee will showcase and present the wealth
of creativity emanating from Jamaica through Canadians of Jamaican heritage. Our unique perspective is that no celebration
of a country’s milestones and history can be represented without the presence of its artists from the visual to the performing arts.
Who can forget iconic scenes from such memorable films as Dancehall Queen, Lunatic, Smile Orange, Milk and Honey,
to name but a few? Pantomime and Miss Lou’s passion for the patois we have embodied, from Anancy story to Ring Ding.
Ska, Rock Steady, Dub, Reggae and Dancehall music have captivated the essence of a people to MOVE! And the moves
we have, "Bogle, Butterfly, Signal di Plane, Summa Bounce and Chant Riddim." They inspire many genres, from modern and
contemporary to hip hop and R 'n B dance forms.
“Culture is the heart of society, and at the heart of culture
has always been artistic expression. The Jamaica 50
initiative and a comprehensive celebration of Jamaica’s 50
years of independence would be incomplete if it didn’t
involve an exploration and celebration of the very things that
make Jamaicans who they are.”

Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc.
The Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that has established a Steering Committee for Toronto and the Greater
Toronto Area to plan an exciting and wide-ranging program of events and activities. The Committee’s goal is to showcase the outstanding
contributions of Jamaicans in Canada; to encourage youth of Jamaican heritage to be better informed and to support Jamaica; and to
provide a legacy to Jamaica and Canada through charitable and other social and cultural initiatives. The Toronto Committee will also
collaborate with various community organizations in celebrating the 50th anniversary.
