This is a live feed of a wild female barn owl named Molly. The owl box is loc ated 15 feet off the ground. The male(McGee) has
a white chest and face. He usually shows up after dark but has spent an entire day with the female. For more Information

This has gone on far longer than the 6-8 hours we were promised. Carlos has a great neighbor to keep us entertained like this while he's off on vacation.

I don't think they are on vacation yet. Carlos has been talking today and chat ting in the chatroom.

Looking in on the other chat the MODs are saying that one other reason Carlos removed the gag shag is because it was so high it was covering the lower night
camer a and the day camer a lens was so dirty he wasn't sure how we were seeing anything at all through it.
One other chatter said they had an owl box and they cleaned it out ever y time. If they didn't they could smell it all the way from the house.

Well, that was one theory I put forth--cheaper and easier to clean the box than to cut new holes for better camera angles.

However, I met one chatter on the other sit e who was very angry that Carlos had cleaned it out and felt like he had evicted Molly. This was a person
considering comeing t o the seatle get-together but then said he had to back out after t his.
But t he person who said they could smell it said that the fact that they cleaned it aft er every clut ch never prevented the owls from coming back , even
though the barn owl sites suggest doing it only once a year in Oct -Dec.
The grumpy guy is still on the chat over there, so maybe he has been reasured by this other owl box owner. I hope so.

No mat ter what you think of Ms O'Brien(I never read/hear d any of t he controversial stuf f online), she really sacrificied her life for t hat owl and he loved her just

I've been peeking in at the TA nest and I've come to the conclusion that the scrawniness of the owlets is at least partly due to opit ical illusion:
1. The TA owlets are in a big box, and they are far away f rom the camera, which makes them look small.
2. O ur owlets were in a much smaller box, and were much closer to the camera, making them look relatively bigger.
3. I also noticed that the closer they come to the camera, the fluffier they look.

Reasonable deduction I think, Jan. But even when they come close enough t o almost obscur e the camer a they seem very thin to me and a lot less down
feathers - than Molly's owlet s were at t hat age. Some info posted earlier today said that owls in different climates and set tings often develop different
characteristics - a very warm environment like Tel Aviv vs. the cooler temps in CA.

TA box, ther efore my question: is it very warm there right now? Air trapped in feathers (or fur, in the case of mammals) is an insulat ing layer. When such
animals are in the cold, t hey tend to 'stand up' their feathers/fur ('piloerection' for mammals) to trap a thicker layer of air. The converse is true when they
are hot - they compress t heir feathers/fur to minimize the thickness of t he air blanket. Could it be a combination of the two - differences in the
amount/type of down feat hers produced in a warmer climate and behavior (compression of feathers) - t hat makes them appear thinner?

Eric posted here on the SPO chat earlier today. He wants to have at least 500 emails expressing interest in the coffee table book. He will have to have a
minimum of 1000 printed. He also sad the book will cost $50 to $100 depending on number of orders. The mor e or ders he gets the less the price will be.

LO L@Lynda! I agree in a way. It's not a good setup either. The nest box is in at least 2 rooms, so you can't see the adults coming and going. I think
the owlets are hyster ical. Their for ms are so exagger at edly ugly/cute, and they ar e so ungainly as they waddle around. I wrote the univer sity a note
letting them know that they have a following here and that we'd like some tweaking to the cameras if possible.

There was an archived video played all day today fr om 6:00 A M (PDT) until just a shor t while ago. It was video taken in February by Car los but never

Good evening, all! So nice to see everyone…. it’s great that we’re all still chatting here.
I don’t mean t o be boring with my recent wild turkey stories... but this is funny. I was sitting at the computer today, wishing the turkeys would show up again.
My computer is on the table, right next t o glass doors which overlook the deck. I heard a funny tapping sound, looked over to my r ight (where the deck is) and
ther e was one of the turkey hens, not two feet from me, pecking at the glass door! Maybe she saw her reflection, or maybe she was calling me to t hrow out
more cracked corn f or them….but she really st art led me! She had to climb two sets of st eps to get there—amazing! I include a photo of the view I
had….unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera at the time, so can’t show you the turkey at the door. But she was there!

vulnerable & think people are always t rut hful; they think t he "you've won a prize" is for real and get sucked into it, etc. Others who are alone, lonely or

Hey Jan and anyone else who was here for this conver sation - Today we had our slide show. Our tech teacher used a CD of popular music. They just changed
some of the lyrics to make them kid-friendly. Well, the kids were sitting there on the floor bopping away and singing the songs and telling me who the singers
were. I felt like an old f ogey. But like you said - they don't make music like they used to! I bought a new car a few year s ago with a satellite radio. I like the
power of being able to pick the genre you want to listen to. I never pick the top 100 or whatever. I'll go 80s or 40s or lite rock or whatever my mood is.
Anyway, I thought of you when t hey played all the "young people music!"

My friends - since Molly has turned her back on us above I must share. In just 7 hour s the worst year in my 16 year teaching career will be over . I have had
chairs thrown in my general dir ection. I have had to tell the kids that if they t hink they can t hrow a tant rum I can t hrow a bigger one. I have dealt with 15
regular ed kids and 5 emotionally disturbed boys. I'm so excited I could hork.

aft er climbing over a desk to disarm an angry child. Si I understand about the chair bit. For the most par t she loved it and was good at it. But it is

I am good at it . Not quite sure what else I will do, but I can't keep this up. The problem was t hat I was going to t eam teach with t his really great
teacher. Let's call her Benedict Ar nold. She said if you take these 5 boys that no one in their right mind will take, I will stick with you, and we will get
thr ough it . She quit in November. We've had 2 terrible teachers since then. Hence the problem. See I wasn't raised this way. My parents taught me
that if you give your word, you stick with it. Darn values! ! Guess not everyone was taught that way .. .

disturbed kids in Boston. Too many assaults to even count . I have been wat ching the owls almost since the beginning. I don't say much on the chat, but
many t imes I felt that watching the owls at night kept me from losing it. Enjoy your summer and take time to relax. Next year will be better...at least we

The last anybody hear d from Carlos, t hey had not come back. This isn't unusual. But the odds are that they will be back because barn owls tend to return
to nesting sites t hat t hey like and have had success in. There's one site in England that has been used for 100 years.

According to Car los "they are all gone". He could be just telling t hat to us so we don't bother him so much as it seems unlikely to me all 6 of them packed

Hi Susan. Molly ate the f irst egg, presumably because she could tell it wasn't viable. I don't know if t hat white spot on screen now is an egg or not, but if
it is, she's not incubating it , and if it wasn't incubated enough, if would have gone bad for that reason.

I haven't seen anyt hing posted about t he reflective foam. But he did say that Molly nor McGee have returned to the box since Tues night. I think he is
doing some upgrades to t he box in case they do retur n later.
HI Leslee... Carlos has been talking on the chat for awhile now. He typed in all that info but I couldn't get him t o clarify the part about the reflective foam
and if he just added it to the door (area). It was broken up into 2 different chat s so I'm not sure who he was t alking/responding to.
Foam? That 's a new one!! Why would he add foam? As far as I know, he cleaned out some of the gag shag, and rolled up the cables. That is all.

RV t rip (a rental) up the coast of CA fr om Ontario to SF. There were 3 couples in our RV - (tight quarters) I think we wer e in Solvang or San Simeon and the
guys were ROFL at a couple who drove in wit h their "house" on the back of a truck. The wife was "trying" to guide the driver as he backed t hat ungainly
conraption into an RV space. Pict ures of it somewhere - but long packed away.

If t his was Molly in r eal time in the box, Carlos would have had to power wash the inside of that box to get it as clean as it is in the video!!! That should be a clue

Carlos simply started broadcasting the video from a different room in his house. He never said anyt hing ot her than that. People have taken snippets of
conver sation from t wo diff erent chat rooms and taken them all out of context and run with wild speculation.
The video is a recor ding from Feb8th, before she laid the first eggs. She is not in the box at this time, in real time.

I think there are 5. I don't think they are thinner , just standing tall because of the heat. Plus the camera is further away, so they look smaller. When

I think there are 6 owlets. As f or size, appar ent health, et c. Here's what I wr ote earlier:
One has t o remember that birds evolving in different climat es will have adapted to best cope with their chosen environment. Molly's brood was hatched in
a rat her chilly area compared to Tel Aviv. I suspect these owlets are just fine, and only look different due to different insulating requirements to cope
wit h their environment . If I were in a dry hot area, I think I would forgo the thicker down. A barn owl's nor mal body temp is said to be 104 degrees.
That said, I'd love to have some input f rom more knowledgeable people in the field.
But I don't think these owlets are in any worse health t hen Molly's brood was.

Try t o open this link in Windows Media Player and see if it works.

It's the streaming video feed, without anything else from the website.

I have a 3 year old Toshiba Sat elit e. It 's been temperamental, but works fine. Maybe you've overloaded it? I had to buy an external hard dr ive and put
a lot of my sewing and music on it so I could have "space" for doing some of these things. Per haps try t hat. Maybe that will help. Good luck!

Here is my st ory. My neighbor of many years retired comfortably from AT&T. He and his wife then went looking for an RV... and they sort of fell into the deal of
a lifetime. The salesman loved them so much (reminds me a lot of the Royals) that he per suaded my neighbors int o traveling the country as ambassadors for the
RV company, living in and showing their top of the line RVs to wealthy clients. They t raveled for many years in a number of $1,000,000+ RVs. Eventually they
retir ed again and bought one of their show vehicles for pennies on the dollar. Kind of cool.

Original over head camer a that came with the box. He added the other two internal cameras lat er but before the eggs were laid.

Certainly. I was thinking of doing something similar for myself . Just haven't decided what yet . I tried very hard to reduce my (once out of control) mug
collection to the bare minimum when I moved int o the cabin. 600sqft doesn't aff ord space for a lot of knick-knacks.

16 x16 foot open floor s for the two main r ooms, one lower, one upstairs.
The kitchen and bath are both in the tiny litt le 14' x 7' shed addition to t he right.
612sqf t in total, some of that eaten up by stairway/closet.
The laundry room is in a detached barn/shed, out of view, immediat ely to camera right.

I do, but it's awful cold in t here during winter! Have to caref ully plan laundry around naturally occurr ing sunny days, to take advant age of any solar gain
I can. That usually leaves me with a two hour window, mid af ter noon, on maybe three days a mont h.
I'm seriously considering a solar syst em for both water and radiant heat.

None of us can say what Carlos WANTS to do or not do. I think he may want to, because it was such a wonderful experience. On the ot her hand he may
not want to because it took so much of his life. It looks like he and Donna like to travel and be gone a lot, and having Molly and the Owl Box hasn't
aff orded them that opport unity. But if he could chage a few things, like placement of the equipment , wires, etc., and designat e some of the work t o
others, he may want to again. Let 's hope so. Or Not!

How many owlets on the Tel Aviv cam? Is it 5? Been watching them this am, and I'm wondering if it's coloration differences t hat aren't making the two look a
little more gaunt. They almost look like there's gray fur growing in instead of white or apricot. It's a denser color so it's not going t o look as fluf fy right?

One has t o remember that birds evolving in different climat es will have adapted to best cope with their chosen environment. Molly's brood was hatched in
a rat her chilly area compared to Tel Aviv. I suspect these owlets are just fine, and only look different due to different insulating requirements to cope
wit h their environment . If I were in a dry hot area, I think I would forgo the thicker down. A barn owl's nor mal body temp is said to be 104 degrees.
