RAMBLING
Rambling is a non-competitive sport that takes place
along sign-posted routes and is officially approved
by the competent body in each individual country.
Its aim is to bring people closer to nature and to an
understanding of the area’s heritage, ethnography
and culture. It makes use of traditional means of
communications such as highroads, local tracks
and paths. It represents a symbiosis between sport,
culture and the environment.
It is a relaxing activity which can be confused with
others such as hiking, mountaineering or trekking
or can form part of them due to their similarity.
According to literature on mountain sports, hiking
is the most similar to and also the precursor of
rambling. The main difference with the latter is that
it takes place along tracks and paths that have not
been sign-posted and that are therefore not as safe
as officially approved paths.
6
ORIGINS OF RAMBLING Rambling started in France after the Second World
War; this year, 2010, sees the celebration of its 50th
anniversary, hosted by the “Fédération Française de
la Randonnée Pédestre (FFRP)”. Other countries such
as Germany, Holland Switzerland and Belgium have
also promoted rambling as a new form of mountain
tourism. In Spain it started in Catalonia at the end of the 60s;
from here it spread to other autonomous regions,
although with varying success.
The Federación Española de Montaña (Spanish
Mountain Sports Association), now the Federación
Española de Deportes de Montaña y Escalada
(FEDME) (Spanish Mountain Sports and Climbing
Association), took on this new sport and called it
“senderismo” or rambling.
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • RAMBLING
SIGN-POSTED PATHS
These paths have been sign-posted with signs (posts,
arrows, information panels, painted marks, etc)
which aim, wherever possible, to keep people away
from having to go through roads and traffic.
When a GR covers three or more European countries
it is classified as an International path and carries the
letter “E”.
Sign-posted paths can be classified into three main
groups, namely:
• Long-distance paths (GR), which are over 50
kilometers long (km from now on) and which link
distant areas and go through places, districts, regions
or countries which are distant from one another, and
which are subdivided into sections.
• Short-distance paths (PR), which are 10 to 15 km
long, go through specific environments or reach a
town or point of interest and which only take one day to
cover. A PR-A is a short-distance path in Andalusia.
• Local paths (SL), which are up to 10 km long and
relatively easy.
7
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • RAMBLING
WHO ARE THEY FOR?
GR and PR paths are aimed at those who like walking,
enjoy nature, looking at the countryside and getting
to know what walking has to offer. It can complement
other hobbies such as photography, drawing and
discovering about flora and fauna.
Rambling can be enjoyed by anyone, irrespective
of physical fitness or age; membership of a club is
not essential although it is recommended. As paths
are sign-posted, it is difficult to get lost so it can be
enjoyed by the whole family.
A path can be covered in either direction and one can
take as long as one likes. At times there are detours that
allow people to visit monuments or places of interest.
On a GR, every so many km, the rambler will come to
towns where he can eat or stay the night; this means
that walkers do not need to carry heavy loads during
the journey.
8
Unlike the GR, the PR paths are designed for short
walks or trips that last half a day, a whole day or a
weekend.
RECOMMENDATIONS
For a successful and safe trip, the rambler needs to
take suitable equipment which is in good condition
and must prepare the route beforehand.
PREPARATIONS FOR THE ROUTE
Documentation Before starting off, every rambler needs to:
• gather information about the area
• obtain transit permits if the area is restricted or private, allows camping, is a shelter or another type of lodging
• obtain information on how to get to the start of
the path
• study the route on a map and calculate the time which will be needed to complete it.
Personal equipment
A rambler’s personal equipment must include basic
gear or kit such as a map, suitable footwear, a
rucksack, a hat, sun cream, lip protector, a waterbottle, food high in sugar and carbohydrates.
Additionally, if the weather is unstable, or the
rambler expects to reach the destination at night
or spend the night walking, he should not forget to
carry a torch, a small umbrella, a waterproof jacket,
and spare clothes. It is also advisable to carry a
first aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, pain killer, antacid,
dressings, needle…).
N.B. The Rambling routes contained in this Guide have
been designed by Rambling Experts and are based
on current legislation in ramblers’ manuals and
are perfectly achievable. Nevertheless there are
registered routes (e.g. PR A-266,...) which are
signposted and approved according to International
signs and there are others which only bear the name

of the route and which are waiting to be signposted
or approved; on these, data included in this Guide
needs to be interpreted in order to complete the
route safely.
body and with the centre of gravity perpendicular to
the feet. When walking up or down hills the body
needs to be bent forwards; when going up the rate of
walking will slow down and/or will get shorter.
BASIC RULES FOR THE RAMBLER The secret of going on a good hike with minimum
effort is based on two things: physical fitness (which
requires training) and technique (dependant on
knowledge of the route). Following on from this, five
basic rules need to be borne in mind. On flat ground the recommended speed is 3 or 4 km
per hour. In normal conditions, walking constantly and
with few stops, an incline of 300/400 meters (m from
now on) can be covered in approximately one hour.
1. Start to walk slowly and build up to a constant
speed, without running or stopping unnecessarily.
2. Synchronize the walking speed with the breathing
rate.
3. Avoid long stops as this cools down muscles.
4. Walk correctly, with feet flat on the ground, a straight
10
5. Rehydrate with water or isotonic drinks every half
hour. Food should be suitable for the physical effort
required and should not be abundant.
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • RECOMMENDATIONS
RULES FOR RAMBLERS
• Do not leave or bury rubbish. Take it to a bin.
• Never light a fire. Take ready-made food.
• Close all gates, barriers and hut doors along the way to prevent any cattle or other animals from entering or leaving.
• Respect all tracks. Shortcuts only serve to spoil the ground, leading to the disappearance of the original path.
• Respect and look after fountains, rivers and other sources of water. Do not throw soap, detergents, polluting products or waste in them.
• Do not cut flowers or branches. We all want to enjoy them.
• Do not camp in the open.
Use suitable camping sites.
• Get to know, respect and commit yourself to the defense of nature.
• Motorized vehicles should be used on roads. Do not use them on tracks. Do not spoil the peace and quiet of the countryside with the noise of their engines.
• Dogs should be on a lead so as not to bother or frighten cattle or roaming animals.

THE “RAMBLER’S INFORMATION
METHOD (MIDE)”
WHAT IS MIDE? MIDE is a method for evaluating the level of difficulty of
hikes. It has created a scale for calculating the technical
and physical difficulty of routes, allowing them to be
classified with better information.
MIDE is a tool intended for ramblers, so they can chose
the route that best suits their training and motivation. It
is not just a source of information but also helps prevent
accidents on high ground as safety improves with greater
information.
WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
MIDE was developed in 2002 as part of the campaign
“Montañas para vivirlas seguro” (For Safer Mountains).
Over the three previous years of this campaign, the
promoters (Government of Aragón -Protección Civil-,
Ibercaja and the Mountaineering Association of Aragon)
had thought about the importance of information in
preventing accidents on mountains. The procedures
manual was presented in 2003 and the method was ready
to be used.
12
WHAT INFORMATION DOES IT OFFER?
MIDE consists of reference information and
evaluation.
The reference information describes the trip under
evaluation (starting point and end of the route,
intermediate points, accumulated gradients, horizontal
distance, time of the year for which the evaluation has
been carried out).
The evaluation provides a number value to four
aspects: level of difficulty of the environment; level of
difficulty for choosing and keeping to the route; level
of difficulty when moving around (type of track, etc.);
and effort required to complete the trip.
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • MIDE
WHAT DOES MIDE EVALUATE?
MIDE uses a 1 to 5 points system to evaluate the following
difficulties:
ENVIRONMENT Harshness of the natural environment
ITINERARY Orienteering during the itinerary
JOURNEY Difficulties during the journey
EFFORT Effort required

THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
THE AXARQUÍA DISTRICT The province of Malaga, situated in the Penibética
region, has numerous mountain ranges which run
parallel or obliquely to the coast and which create
valleys, river basins and some plains. These mountains
divide the province into four districts (Antequera,
Axarquía, Guadalhorce and Ronda), which have unique
characteristics with regard to landscape and ecology.
The Axarquía
The Axarquía district covers an area of 901 km2 to the
East of the province; to the East and Northeast it borders
with Sierra de Alhama and Sierra de la Almijara, both
in the province of Granada. These are a series of small
mountain ranges which are interrupted by the rivers
Vélez, Guaro, Algarrobo-Salayonga and Torrox. Altitude
increases from the coast (area of Vélez-Málaga) towards
the interior and reaches 1,486 m. at the top of Sierra de
Cómpeta and almost 2,000 in Sierra de Tejeda; most of
the district is between 300 and 600 m above sea level.
14
The town of Vélez-Málaga is reached from the South
along the N 340 and from the North along the MA 335,
which links with the district of Alhama in the province
of Granada.
GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY The Axarquía district is part of the Cordillera Penibética
(Penibetica mountain range). The materials along the
foothills of the district (Sierra Tejeda and Sierra de
Almijara) originate in the Tryasic Age. The sedimentary
materials on the coastal plains are deposits from the
Tertiary Age. Subsequent erosion has left an abrupt
landscape, with steep valleys through which flow
the rivers which start in the previously mentioned
mountain ranges.
CLIMATE As in the rest of the province, the climate in the Axarquia
is Mediterranean. Whereas part of the district is at sea
level, the rest is between 600 and 1,000 meters above
sea level. This results in differences in rainfall and
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
temperature during the year.
HYDROLOGY
Rivers are short and have an uneven flow. Rainfall
in the area is such that rivers are often torrential,
due to the steepness of the short flow from the high
ground in the Sierra to the mouths of the rivers. Due
to the long dry season, rivers are dry during most of
the year. Lake Viñuela, on the river Guaro, is the most
important in the district its water is used for supplying
the coastal towns.
EDAPHOLOGY
Most of the soil in the district is moderately good or good
for farming. Farms are situated mainly on the plains
of Vélez-Málaga. In the north of the district, because
of the abrupt relief, the soil is not so good for farming;
consequently, the main activity here on the grasslands
is cattle farming.
15
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
FLORA Rainfall in the district is low; this and the poor and rocky
soil there has an influence on the sort of vegetation that
can be seen at present. There are not many trees in the Axarquia district;
nowadays the majority is replanted pine groves. The
holm oaks, cork oaks or oak woods which made up the
natural vegetation in the area have now been relegated to
small pockets. This has lead to an abundance of shrubs
and pastures (the latter on high ground) which have taken
over as the main vegetation. We can now find mastic trees
(pistacia lentiscus), juniper trees (juniperus communis),
savin junipers (juniperus sabina), candytuft (umbellata
or baetica), heywood (lygos sphaerocarpa) and gum
rockrose (cistus ladanifer and salvifolius). In the more
spoilt areas there is a predominance of thyme (thymus sp)
and grasslands that have adapted to the lack of water. 16
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
As a result of the vast differences in altitude between
the areas next to the sea (Vélez-Málaga) and the high
ground in Sierra Tejeda, there are Meso, Supra and
Oromediterranean layers in the lower ground next to
sea level.
There are also many Spanish ibex (capra hispanica)
in the Sierra de Tejeda and Sierra Almijara. The wild
boar (sus scrofa), whilst not plentiful, is also present
in the district.
FAUNA This district is not rich in terms of fauna due to the
lack of vegetation and the harsh climate which limit
the presence of animal species. Nevertheless, there
are some enclaves, in particular in the high ground of
Sierra de Tejeda and Sierra Almijara, where there are
still some pairs of the rare Bonelli’s eagle (hieraetus
fasciatus) and of the peregrine falcon (falco peregrinos),
due to the presence of rocky precipices.
Other species that can be seen in the sky around the
district are the booted eagle (hieraetus pennatus) or
the common buzzard (buteo buteo) which nest in the
scarce forests. 17

How to get there The distance between Malaga and Periana is 54.5 km
and it takes about one hour to cover the distance. Take
the A-7/A-45 motorway towards Colmenar and take
exit 148 where you join the A-356 towards Riogordo/
Colmenar and drive about 16 km until you reach the
C-340/Riogordo/Mondrón/Alfarnatejo/Periana/
Comares. On reaching the A-7204 you drive 14 kms.
until Periana.
There are 59.9 km from Malaga to the Nerja Caves
and this will take just over 50 min. Take the A-7/A-45
motorway towards Nerja for 52.6 km until exit 295
where you join the N-340a/Costa/Nerja/Maro; after
approximately 1 km. take the N-340a/Maro/Nerja. From
this point, and along the N 340, follow the directions for
1.5 km towards the Nerja Caves.
For the start of this footpath, go to the town centre
in Periana. Ask for the directions for Barriada de la
Estación, which is where the railway station was located.
Otherwise, if you want to go in a South-North direction,
go to the Nerja Caves next to which is the start of the
footpath. From there take the track that goes up to the
Pinarillo Picnic Area.
Footpath’s general description The Long Distance Tejeda-Almijara Footpath is a longrange sports facility which is the central axis of the
sign-posted footpaths in the Axarquía. From the start in
Priana until it ends next to the Nerja Caves it descends
from the mountains to the sea, passing through the
most beautiful and representative landscapes of this
lovely district.
The route has been designed with the aim of providing
an accessible footpath for any rambler, using
traditional paths and passing through all the towns so
as to enjoy the architecture of the Axarquia, the typical
gastronomy of each town and the generosity and
kindness of its people.
19
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FOOTPATH GR-242
Every stage ends in one of the towns so the rambler will
be able to stay in one of the numerous Hotels, hostels or
country houses, enjoying the hospitality of the people of
the Axarquia, something which will add to the interest
of the route.
The route starts in Peruiana; look for “barriada de la
Estación”, which is where the station for the train going
to Boquete de Zafarraya used to be.
Reaching the road, take the track that starts on the left,
called “Camino de Periana a Alcaucín” on the maps.
You reach an edge from where you see the valley of
Arroyo de Zalia. Carry on and cross the stream Arroyo
de Zalia.
Go up 50 meters and cross the road to take the path to
Alcaucin. Go down to the river Alcaucin and go up to
the opposite side, very near the town of Alcaucin. Here
you reach the tarmac track that goes from Alcaucin
20
to “los Cortijillos”. Take the right to reach Alcaucin in
200 meters.
Once in Alcaucin, look for the Shrine of Santo Cristo
on the southeast of the town, very near the cemetery.
Here you meet the track which takes you towards
Canillas. Take this track and you reach Loma de
Canillas passing through a quarry on your left. This is
the limit between both towns. Leave the track and take
a left until you find a footpath. Along this footpath you
reach Cueva de la Fájara. Here you cross the river. This
footpath leads to the tarmac track that will take you to
Canillas de Aceituno.
Cross the town centre of Canillas and leave along the
road to Sedella. Go along to the swimming pool and head
left. Here you take the footpath that goes parallel to the
road and, after crossing the river Almanchares, takes
you to Puerto de Sedella, boundary between the towns.
At this point you go along the road for approximately
2,300 meters until you turn left along the track that goes
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FOOTPATH GR-242
up to the Sedella Picnic Area. From the picnic area, take
the track on the right that heads for the El Molino area;
here you go down a footpath among cultivated areas
until you reach the town of Sedella.
Leave Sedella through the eastern exit to the town,
towards the river and towards Cortijo de la Herreriza or
de Cerriza.
Cross the river over its famous Roman bridge. You reach
Cortijo de la Herreriza. Go up behind the farm towards
your left along a footpath that zigzags until it reaches
the hill. From the hill, take the right (East) and then you
reach the remains of an abandoned track. Following
the track you reach a hill, which is on the edge of a pine
forest, and you reach an irrigation channel. Go past the irrigation channel and along the path next
to it. Follow this path for 150 meters when the irrigation
channel turns sharp right, take the left to reach an
opening in the track. Go down the track and 300 meters
later you reach the main track which you turn right and
reach Salares.
Leave Salares by the Arab bridge, to the East of the
town. Go left along this footpath to go up the stream
at Fogarate and once up along “Umbría de la Casa de
Haro”, cross the stream and you reach the remains of
this farm. From here, go up the main track and follow it
until you reach Puerto de la Cruz del Muerto. Descend
from here along the spot around Forgarate towards
some houses and then turn right to teach a tarmac
track which comes from Salares. Turn left here and
650 meters later leave the track to the right and take a
footpath that takes you to the Roman bridge in Canillas
de Albaida. From the Roman bridge, you up the footpath
opposite so as to reach Canillas de Albaida, where a
visit to the Shrine of Saint Anne is a must.
Leave Canillas de Albaida at the top of the town, next
to the Shrine of Saint Anne. From her, take the track
towards La Fábrica and 100 meters later turn right. Go
21
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FOOTPATH GR-242
along this track, next to an irrigation channel, which
later becomes a footpath. This footpath is always
parallel to the channel until Competa. At about 600
meters from Canillas, the footpath goes out onto a
tarmac track which you follow for several meters and
then go on to the footpath, this time along the top of the
track. Enter Competa by the Shrine of Saint Anthony.
Leave Competa by the football field. Then take the
track that goes up to Cruz de Canillas. Here, take
the Sendero de las Ventas (Footpath of the Inns),
Competa’s traditional road towards Granada, until you
cross the Arroyo de Juan Rojo. Once on the other side,
turn right and go down towards the track and Cortijo
del Daire. From Cortiji del Daire, follow the track
eastwards and continue along it until you reach Puerto
de la Paez Blanca. Up on this pass, go straight on, until
you pass the ruins of Venta Cebollera; 400 meters from
here, at a sharp turn you leave the track. Go along a
footpath that goes down to El Acebuchal, an old town,
currently restored for rental and rural tourism. From El
22
Acebuchal take the track on the left bank of the stream
and go up to the track that we had previously left. This
track continues until the area called Cuatro Caminos
and goes down to Frigiliana. You reach the FrigilianaTorox road to go up to the upper part of the town and
reach the town centre, reaching Frigiliana.
From Frigiliana’s town centre, go down to River
Higueron and then go upstream for 950 meters. Leave
river Higuerón to go up the left bank until you reach the
ridge that separates the rivers Higueron and Chillar.
Turn northeast here, along a marked footpath that
goes along a series of watercourses until you start to
go down and reach the river Chillar. Here you enter
the municipal area of Nerja. From the river Chillar,
go up along Cuesta de los Galgos until you reach a
track where you turn right. Follow this track until the
Pinarillo Picnic Area. From here, take the track towards
the Nerja Caves; follow this until you reach the end of
the footpath at the famous cave.
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FOOTPATH GR-242
This footpath gives you the chance to enjoy not just the
magnificent views of nature on Sierras de Tejeda and
Almijara, but also other cultural, historical and social
attractions. From the cultural point of view you can visit
the numerous shrines, such as those of Santo Cristo
in Alcaucín, Saint Anne in Canillas de Albaida or Saint
Anthony in Cómpeta. From the historic point of view,
the footpath goes along very important places like Zalia
Castle; we can also see the numerous bridges built by
the different people that have shaped the area, such as
the Roman bridges in Sedela and Canillas de Albaida or
the Arab bridge in Salares.

bank you find the footpath that you need to follow. The
footpath goes to the tarmac track that leads to Canillas
de Aceituno. On reaching the tarmac track, turn left,
it’s just 700 meters. Very soon you reach the town after
turning left again at the next cross-roads.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS PILAS PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY As far as the town’s origin is concerned, it is worth
mentioning that its name comes from the Arab
“Al-farnat” which means flour-mill; however, the
first settlements date from Prehistoric times, as
witnessed by the remains found in the Palancar y
Morales stream.
Alfarnate was founded between 1489 and 1490 as a
result of the existence of various Arab farmsteads
scattered around the valley. At least this is what the
remains found on Cerro del Castillejo would suggest.
The present-day town is also called Puebla de Alfarnate,
as a result of a conquered settlement; this was the
name given to conquered settlements set up on land
taken from the Arabs and therefore to any new town.
Christian troops that took part in the taking of Velez
in 1487 passed through Alfarnate.
The passes at Puerto de los Alhazores (1,040 meters)
and at Puerto del Sol (1,100 meters) are the natural
passes via which this area communicated with the
outside world. It would seem that Los Alhazores was
the reason for the founding of the town of Alfarnate,
as the caravans on their way from the coast to the
interior would pass this way, in particular at the time
of the Nazari kingdom of Granada. It was the main
route between Malaga and the interior of Andalucia
via the Main Road, the present-day MA-115 road, and
old Malaga to Granada main road. The end of the 19th
century saw the rise of banditry in Andalucía, and
this was particularly significant in Alfarnate as it was
next to the pass at Puerto de los Alazores, a natural
pass between Malaga and Granada. The inn at Venta
de Alfarnate was the scene of numerous skirmishes
by bandits, attacks on travellers on horseback and on
royal couriers.
OROGRAPHY The plain around Alfarnate is nothing like its surroundings
which are characterised by a rugged, mountainous relief
due to the proximity of mountainous areas.
41
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS PILAS PATH
Rocks in this mountainous terrain have numerous
fractures and thus water is able to permeate easily and
abundantly. Along the edges there are many springs,
some with plenty of water.
Its morphology is typical of a chalky, rugged and
impressive relief with mountain vegetation and steep
inclines and vertical gorges.
The main summits are Pico de Chamizo (1,637 meters)
in Sierra del Jobo, Pico del Vilo (1,415 meters) in Sierra
Enmedio, Pico Tres Mogotes (1,387 meters) in Tajo de
las Palomas-Puerto de los Alazores and Cumbre del
Gallo (1,363 meters) in Sierra Enmedio.
The land is watered by the Palancar and Morales
streams, tributaries of the river Sabar.
How to get there: There are almost 50 km from Malaga to Alfarnate and
the journey takes 50 minutes. Head along the A-7/A-45
towards Colmenar until exit 148 where you join the
A-356 following directions for Riogordo/Colmenar.
After 10 km, take the A-7204, A-4152 and the local
MA-4101.
Description of the route
In Alfarnate take the exit which takes you to the
Virgen de Monsalud cooperative society. Opposite,
on the right, take the track that crosses a vast plain
which is surrounded by crops, cereals, vegetables,
where there are some irrigation ponds and wells.
Cross the Roman Bridge known as Puente de los
Dos Ojos (Bridge of Two Eyes) under which flows the
Arroyo Morales.
As you go up you will see olive and almond groves
and, if you look back you will see some magnificent
panoramic views. Following the path you reach a fork
42
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS PILAS PATH
some meters further on. Continue along the main
track and soon there is another fork; the left-hand
track heads towards an old quarry.
Without leaving the track you reach the Pilas del
Cerezal (photo 1), a natural fountain where you can
stop and rest. Right above the basins you see vertical
limestone walls known as Tajo de la Palomera, a
shelter for Spanish ibex and a nesting place for birds
of prey.
Follow the route up through reeds and brambles,
along Tajo de la Palomera. On the right is the source
of Arroyo Morales and, following the track, you get
to a fork where you head right. Head down a hill
and you reach Pilas del Prado de Herrera (photo 2)
and, later, at the bottom of the incline, turn left to
reach Pilas de Barrionuevo (photo 3); this is a typical
fountain made from limestone at different levels,
whose spout is an old cannon and which serves as a
watering hole for cattle.
43
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS PILAS PATH
Right opposite you can see some rocky ledges. Go up
along the right, along a narrow path, parallel to the
fencing, until you reach a new track where you head
right. Follow the track and cross the so-called Loma
del Aire, where you get some magnificent views of
Alfarnate if you look to the right.
Continue further on and, once again on the right, you
see a hill with a patch of Mediterranean woodland,
known as Cerro del Castillejo, where there are
some old restored basins (photo 4) and a 100 yearold walnut tree. To the right of the track there is a
path that goes up to heights of the Hill, where the old
remains of Arab buildings still remain.
Without leaving the main track, go down until you
reach the Alfarnate-Periana road, right next to a
bridge. Cross the road towards Alfarnate and a track
appears 200 m on the left. Skirt the orchards until
you reach a rise, among holm oaks, which leads to
the farm at Gastarreja (photo 5), a traditional building

with stone and mud walls and wooden beams, at
present semi-derelict and used as a shelter.
Once there, head right and join the track that goes
along the foot of Sierra de Enmedio, where there are
holm oaks and pines. A little further on, start heading
up along the left bank of “la Charca”, a small reservoir
that supplies the town with irrigation water. From
here, start to go down towards the last stage of the

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The Route of the Oil and of the Mountains goes through
spectacular changes in scenery, through mountains,
along the Mediterranean and lovely villages such as
Riogordo, Alfarnatejo, Alfarnate. Periana, Alcaucin and
La Viñuela. Along this route, visitors can find remains of
large millstones and enormous earthenware jars which
date from times when olive oil was produced here, the
great protagonist of the traditional, lovely and healthy
Mediterranean cuisine. The abundant olive trees of
the region produce some of the best oils in the world,
traditionally made in traditional oil presses.
OROGRAPHY This route is geographically speaking in the so-called
“Colmenar Corridor”, a natural pass that separates the
Mountains of Malaga from the Sierras of Antequera,
namely Sierra de las Cabras, Sierra de Jobos and Sierra
de Camaroles. This area is situated in the Northern Axarquia and
surrounded by the summits at Chamizo, Gallo and
Vilo; it is unique in the province of Malaga. Its difficult
orography and its distance from the capital made these
lands into a true home for bandits; this led to the creation
of a romantic legend. According to remains found in the
narrow gorges along the river Sabar man has been here
since Neolithic times. How to get there There are 49.5 km from Malaga to Alfarnatejo and the
journey takes just over 50 minutes. Head along the A-7/
A-45 towards Colmenar until exit 148 where you join the
A-356 following directions to Riogordo/Colmenar. After
some 10 km, take the A-7204, A-4152 and the local MA4101 and MA-4102.
Description of the route Start the route in Alfarnatejo, in the town centre, in Fuente
del Conejo (photo 1), next to the municipal pool. Take
“Camino de Riogordo”, which descends gently between
49
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALFARNATEJO-RIOGORDO PATH
almond fields, olive groves and numerous holm oaks.
This is a short descent that leads to the area known as
“el Torcal” (photo 2), which is a group of limestone rocks
of karst origin. On the left is Cerro del Fraile, whose
steep walls of the North face start soon. Looking north,
on the right, is the south side of the Chamizo (1.637 m.).
Soon you go along slightly sloping watercourses which
lead you to leave the municipal area of Alfarnatejo and
enter Riogordo, going through the district of Colmenar,
even though for only several meters.
These watercourses lead to one of the most interesting
areas in the route, an area of great beauty that runs along
the Northeastern and Northern sides of the Sierra del
Rey; there are over 200 meters from the summit to our
position. This very humid area has important vegetation
made up of Portuguese oak and ash near the streams
and abundant undergrowth. Beyond this area you reach the farms at Cuartillo and
Farrilla, now abandoned, in an area where the steepness
50
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALFARNATEJO-RIOGORDO PATH
of the walls of Sierra del Rey, Matagallar and Cerro
del Fraile are now much less and have resulted in an
important farming activity.
To the west, on the left, is the impressive limestone mass
of Tajo de Gomer, a 300 m cleft, situated on the border
of the districts of Alfarnatejo and Riogordo. Neolithic
remains have been found in the area.
The area you are transiting is the Río de la Cueva,
between Tajo de Gómer and Sierra del Rey, situated in
Valle de Auta (photo 3). Follow Río de la Cueva downriver
and you reach an open, flat area until you reach Cortijo
de Auta (600 m.) (photo 4). Phoenician, Roman and Arab
remains have been discovered here, the Arab ones being
the most important in the place.
51
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALFARNATEJO-RIOGORDO PATH
Once at Cortijo de Auta you will join the Long Range Path
GR-7, which continues until near Riogordo.
This area is easier than the start of the route, with
sloping hills replacing the steep walls. Olive trees
predominate here, although there are also cereals up
to Riogordo. Limestone gives way to clay, loam and
various types of sand.
After going through several watercourses, on the way
up, you reach a crossroads in the tracks where you
leave GR-7. Following some watercourses you enter
the district of Colmenar, where you go past Molino de la
Santa to the left. This is the final leg of the route as you
go down to the town of Riogordo, passing by the fountain
built in 1987 (photo 5), which is the end of the route.

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The name Canillas de Aceituno comes from the Latin
“Cann-illae” (area of reed-beds) and the Arab “Azeytuni”
(woven and dyed silk) as the production of and trading
in silk was the most profitable activity which the Arabs
developed in the area.
Neanderthal and Sapiens prehistoric man went up
to Sierra Tejeda to hunt animals and to shelter in
the caves. A polished hand-axe dating from Neolithic
times was found on Sierra Tejeda. It is probable that
Phoenicians and Romans lived in the area.
The first news we have about its history corresponds
to the time of the Arabs when, in all probability, the
primitive settlement was founded. The Andalusi age
sees an Arab town between the VIII and XV centuries
during which inhabitants used the streams to set up
smallholdings on the terraces built along the slopes
to grow vegetables and plant fruit trees.
OROGRAPHY Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara are an impressive
mountain range that forms a geographical barrier
between the provinces of Malaga and Granada.
Sierra Tejeda is tha backbone of the district of the
Axarquia, which comes from the Arab “as-Sharq”
meaning “the west”. Sierra Almijara is the backdrop
to the fertile lands of Alhama.
The area is dominated by steep slopes, sharp summits
and deep ravines, due to the fact that the sands are
permeable and therefore do not retain rainwater.
Minerals such as magnesium have led to vegetation
that is equally unique given the abundance of rare,
native species.
How to get there There are 52.9 km from Malaga to Canillas de Aceituno,
and the journey takes about 1 hour. Head along the
E-15/A-7/ towards Almería until exit 272 where you
55

follow directions for Vélez-Málaga/A-356/Viñuela/
Colmenar/Zafarraya. Join the A-356 and follow
directions to Riogordo/Colmenar. On reaching the
A-356 after 9.8 km. you join the A-7205 and then the
MA-4106.
To start this route which is sign-posted by the
Department of the Environment go to the main square
in Canillas de Aceituno, next to the Town Hall. From
here, go up some steep streets towards the exit of
the town which is where you will find the information
panel for the start.
Description of the route The landscape along this path is abrupt and with
little vegetation; it a shelter for Spanish ibex, a prime
example of Iberian fauna. The route starts in the town of Canillas de Aceituno, a
good example of Mozarab architecture in the region.
The exit to the town has been refurbished and what
56
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • CASA DE LA NIEVE - LA MAROMA PATH
used to be a difficult path has now become a simple
stepped ramp which leads out of the town to the path
that leads to the hills.
You walk through a sparse pine forest where you see
rockrose, thyme, rosemary, and esparto grass. There
are sharp inclines at the start until you reach Fuente
de la Rábita (1,060m.).
In the area of la Rábita (photo 1) there is a cave where,
allegedly, three Arab dignitaries lived and died.
After Fuente de la Rábita you follow the path upwards
and soon see Arroyo de Almanchares, which has steep
sides. Its inaccessibility makes it an important shelter
for Spanish ibex, previously in danger of extinction and
of which there are now over 2,000 in the Andalusian
Hunting Reserve in Sierra Tejeda-Almijara.
Soon the path crosses to the other bank and reaches
Fuente de la Gitana (photo 2), where the amount of
57
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • CASA DE LA NIEVE - LA MAROMA PATH
water depends on rainfall, which has been scarce
these past years.
After the fountain, a zigzagging climb takes you to
Collado de la Gitana (1,415 m.). Here, on your left,
you see the path that comes from the town, bordering
Peñón Grande, but you continue climbing.
The path crosses Barranco de los Tajos Lisos and here
starts a sharp zigzagging climb in the area known as Los
Charcones. Here you see plenty of pine trees and esparto
grass, and a few savin junipers. Further up, the trees
disappear and you will only find plants that have adapted
to the mountain such as broom, which has narrow, sharp
leaves to reduce water loss and a cushioned shape to
resist the wind up on the mountain.
When you reach the spot called Proa del Barco (photo
3), the path heads East and the vegetation becomes
scarce, due to the harsh conditions on the mountain.
The path heads Northeast until you reach the remains
58
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • CASA DE LA NIEVE - LA MAROMA PATH
of Casa de la Nieve (photo 4) and the rain gauge that
used to be there.
The path “Casa de la Nieve” owes its name to the
shelter used by the so-called “hombre de la nieve” or
“snow men” up on the mountain to protect themselves
during the harsh working days on the mountains.
Before fridges were invented, keeping food fresh was
difficult and was achieved thanks to the natural ice
that the snow men produced.
Up to the mid 20th Century the snow men would compact
great masses of snow hollows near the summit of la
Maroma, to conserve them and stop it from melting
during the day. Then, the ice that had formed when the
snow was compacted was taken on mules and covered
in straw to slow the melting during the journey. The ice
that was taken down to the towns was used to preserve
food or for the manufacture of ice-cream.
59
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • CASA DE LA NIEVE - LA MAROMA PATH
The very cold weather means that the climb to la
Maroma is difficult in winter.
From the Casa de la Nieve you can reach the summit
of la Maroma (photo 5) which is just 500 m away.
The views from the top of la Maroma are impressive.
You can see the Axarquia, with its white villages. To
the West along the coast you can see up to Gibraltar
and the coast of Africa. You can see all the mountains
of Malaga, Sierra de las Nieves, Sierra del Valle de
Abdalajís and el Chorro, Sierras del Torcal and Arco
Calizo Norte de Málaga. To the East you can see Sierra
de Almijara, Sierra Nevada in the distance and even
Sierra de Gádor. Without any doubt, the views make it
worth the effort.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALMÁCHAR - CERRO PATARRA PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The towns of Almachar, Moclinejo, El Borge, Cutar,
Comares and Totalan form the well-known Route of the
Raisin; the climate here is conducive to the cultivation
of vineyards, whose fruit (the Muscatel grape) turns to
raisins on the raisin beds which are scattered along
their slopes. An ancestral art dominated by the sun.
OROGRAPHY Situated in the heart of the Axarquia it runs along a
small hill between the rivers El Borge and Almachar,
in countryside surrounded by olive trees, cereals and
slopes covered in vineyards and raisin beds, where the
world-famous raisins are produced.
How to get there There are 34.7 km from Malaga to Almachar and the
journey takes about 53 minutes. Leave the city along
the E-15/A-7 towards Almería, and 13.7 km later you
see the exit Torre de Benagalbón/MA-107/Benagalbón,
where you take the MA-3200 which links with the
MA-3119 which goes directly to Almáchar.
Description of the route Right in the heart of the Axarquia there is a small hill
between the rivers El Borge and Almáchar, in an area
surrounded by olive trees, cereals and slopes covered
in vineyards and raisin beds. This is where the world
famous raisins are produced.
The route is situated entirely in the municipal area of
Almachar; it starts at the river Almachar, crosses the
old quarter and its narrow, charming, beautiful streets
at 230 m above sea level.
Once at the river you continue along it until you reach
Fuente del Forfe (photo 1), situated under a newly built
bridge. Later on, at about 250 m you see the Fuente
Pozuelas (photo 2), which is not so well maintained.
You follow the river until you reach a majestic ancient
carob tree (photo 3) where the path splits but really
leads to the same place. After 1 km, you see a track
63
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALMÁCHAR - CERRO PATARRA PATH
on the left which starts to climb and goes across some
vineyards. Later on you see some paths, but you continue
to the left until the path widens and becomes a track.
Here the incline is more noticeable and as you climb
you get a better view of the town until you reach the
summit of Cerro Patarra (489 m.). You reach the Hill by
zigzagging paths which make the ascent more bearable.
Apart from vineyards and olive trees you will also see
several wine presses.
64
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALMÁCHAR - CERRO PATARRA PATH
From the summit of this Hill, where you can find its trig
point (photo 4) surrounded by vines, you can admire
the view called Arco Calizo (from East to West), Sierra
Almijara, de Enmedio, Tejeda, Zafarraya, Gomer, las
Cabras, Alazores, Camarolos, Coj, etc.
From here you continue along the track, towards the
Southwest, to the town of Almáchar. The track is concreted
over until you reach the bridge across the river, leaving
Fuente Forfe at your feet; this leads to the starting point
along a recently-built wide avenue.
The area around the path is covered in typical Mediterranean
mountain vegetation: holm oaks (quercus ilex), retama
trees (retama sphaerocarpa), palm heart (chamaerops
humilis), Jerusalem sage (phlomis purpurea), gorse (ulex
parviflorus), etc. There are olive trees (olea europea),
cereals and gentle slopes covered in vineyards (vitis
vinifera) and raisin beds, where the world famous
raisins are produced. Apart from this predominant
vegetation, near the rivers and wet areas you can
65
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • ALMÁCHAR - CERRO PATARRA PATH
see prickly pears (opuntia ficus-índica), oleander
(nerium oleander), mint (mentha rotundifolia) and
fennel (foeniculum vulgare).
The fauna that is characteristic of the area is small
mammals like rodents, rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus),
and hares (lepus europaeus). There are also birds,
including birds of prey that live on the steep walls in
the surrounding area and partridge (perdix perdix),
which explains the love of hunting in the area.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA• ARENAS - SAYALONGA PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY Its history, along with that of its neighbor Arenas, is
linked to the fort of Bentomiz. Its name, from the Latin
for “long tunic”, as well as that of Corumbela, a district
of Sayalonga situated to the North, suggests a Roman or
perhaps a Visigoth enclave. It is worth doing the journey
to recall the passing of the different civilizations.
How to get there There are 47.8 km from Malaga to Arenas and the
journey takes about 53 minutes. Leave the city along the
E-15/A-7 towards Almería, and take exit 274 towards
Vélez-Málaga which is 30.8 km. from Málaga. Then
take the MA-4111 (for 4.3 km) up to the MA-117 which
takes you straight to Arenas.
OROGRAPHY This is typical of the areas of the interior of the Axarquia
and therefore the orography of the land is stark and
broken, but with few high mountains; the highest point
of the towns is at La Rabita (672 meters) followed by
the hill at El Mercado (638 meters), in the annexed
areas of Corumbela.
Description of the route The route begins in Arenas (photo 1), a small town in
the mid-Axarquía, in Sierra de Bentomiz, some 10 km.
from Vélez-Málaga.
The rivers that cross the area are short and have an
irregular volume of water, depending on the rainfall
in the area.
At the start you descend to the Arroyo Seco, which you
cross, to climb along a track among some buildings
until you reach a hill where you will find a crossroads
(old road from Vélez-Málaga to Árchez) where you
head left, leaving to your right the path that leads to
the remains of the old Arab fort of Bentomiz (photo 2).
The path continues to climb and you can see Sayalonga
to your right; and to your left and in front the limestone

arch of Sierras de Camarolos, Chamizo, Tejeda, de
Enmedio and Almijara (photo 3). Later on, on the left
you will see the district of Daimalos, and a crossroads
which, should you take it, would take you back to
Arenas. Ignore the crossroads and keep straight on
along the ridge, surrounded by olive and almond trees;
on reaching the first buildings you will see behind
you (South) the blue Mediterranean. Follow the ridge,
ignore the junctions to the right and left, and you reach
Cortijo Quemao (photo 4), with its grape dryers (raisin
beds). This farm is near the MA-119, which you have to
cross to climb a tarmac track, which is almost free of
traffic. This is a short, steep track which links up with
the upper part of Corumbela, a district of Sayalonga
at 550 m above sea level.
Cross the town and go down its streets until the old
road which you cross to enter a marked route called
Paraje de las tres Fuentes (photo 5).
70
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA• ARENAS - SAYALONGA PATH
The route goes along a comfortable track, between
almond trees and carob trees, several vineyards and
holm oaks; soon you will find a waterfall and some
fountains and you continue to the river AlgarroboSayalonga along old farms and recently built houses.
The track you are going along runs parallel to the
road to Cómpeta (situated on your left). For several
kilometers, the track has numerous twists and turns
71

but before it reaches the river (which has water all year
round) it becomes concreted until it reaches the town.
Along the way you see fruit trees and subtropical trees
(avocados, loquats, etc) and diverse riverside vegetation.
At this point in the river, you can see the old Mill which
has been transformed into three rural houses for rent. Go past it and cross the river Algarrobo-Sayalonga
over a pretty, photogenic bridge, known as Puente
del Molino (photo 6). The end of the route is very near
here. Sayalongo is just there, but the climb continues,
especially in the village. This last leg, like the entrance
to the valley, is surrounded by many subtropical trees;
just before the entrance to the town is the walls of its
famous cemetery, “Cementerio (photo 7) Redondo”.
Sayalonga, like Arenas, is situated in the Mid-Axarquía
and is near the coast at 380 m above sea level.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • MACHARAVIAYA – IZNATE - BENAMOCARRA PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The aim has been to recover the old paths and tracks
used by the inhabitants of the area to get from one town
to another. The area was very busy as the main economic
activity in the 3 towns was mainly agriculture.
OROGRAPHY This path is situated in the Axarquia and runs through
farm land, along vineyards, olive groves and links the
three towns of this District.
Benamocarra is 42.4 km from Málaga, and it takes 43
minutes to get there. Leave Málaga along the A7-E15,
take the exit to the A-356, and join the MA-3116.
Description of the route This route starts on the road, before reaching Macharaviaya, on the crossroads with Camino de Antequera, and
heads towards the area known as “casas de Vallejo”. It
starts to level out along a track, along an area known
as Los Pulgares. Follow the main track and 800 m
How to get there Macharaviaya is 36.6 km from Malaga and the journey
takes around 45 minutes. There is no public transport so
the only way there is by car along the E-15/A-7, leaving

later there is another track on the left which reaches
a barrier. The route turns left here. Gradually, the track
becomes a descending path called Cuesta del Alquivir.
From here you can enjoy the views of the “Sierra Tejeda
y del Mar Mediterráneo” Nature Reserve. Here you
cross Arroyo de la Hereta and climb to Macharaviaya;
all around you see Mediterranean flora such as genista,
bolin, Jerusalem sage or thyme.
Once in Macharaviaya, look for the church and the
cemetery until you reach Plaza de la Ilustración (photo

a track to the left to the old wash place (photo 2) and
cross Arroyo Ibero, until you reach a chain that stops
vehicular traffic. Without leaving the main track, you
reach an area known as Serrano. Before you lose sight
of Macharaviaya, look right and you will see an old
waterwheel which was powered by animals and which
used to supply the town with water. After crossing
Arroyo de la Marquesita you see on your left a little
used path that climbs up to an area with houses. Take

the track on the left up to the fork of La Mojonera and
Camino de las Peñuelas and, keeping to the right you
reach the Iznate road.
Walk along the road for a while until you reach Iznate’s
sports facilities; to the right there is a narrow path.
This path, which crosses some vineyards, leads to a
track which takes you along the ridge to the highest
point of this route, Punto Geodésico (Trig Point) del
Melonar (photo 3), 456 m above sea level. From here
you can see the whole Axarquía, especially Canillas de
Aceituno, on the slopes of La Maroma, as well as Pico
Chamizo, on Sierra de Camarolos, Sierra Tejeda and
part of Sierra Almijara.
The path descends along a concrete track back to
the road where you enter Iznate along Calle Málaga.
This village is Moorish in origin so its streets are very
narrow and steep. Go along Calle La Fuente and Calle
El Molino, and walk in front of the Town Hall (photo
4). Go towards the cemetery and, keeping on the main

track, you reach the river Iznate, along which you can
reach Benamocarra (photo 5), which is the end of this
route. The last part of this path goes along plantations
of avocados and custard apples.
Benamocarra is Arab in origin and its name means
“children of Mukarran”; there are remains of the old
Arab town in the proximities of Pozo Luchina. This
village is the birthplace of the famous Malaga musician
Eduardo Ocón Rivas, whose home is still standing and
after whom the auditorium on Paseo del Parque in
Malaga is named.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS VENTAS PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The path allows the visitor to get acquainted with the
recent past as, along the first section, it goes along a
stream whose water was used to generate electricity.
This was produced at the “Fabrica de la Luz” or
generating station which is at the start of the route.
The electricity supplied the towns of Archez, Canillas
and Corumbela and was also used to power a small
saw-mill in the area. All along the journey you can
see the area’s rural architecture in the form of county
estates. You can also see the remains of old “ventas” or
inns which offered travellers rest, protection, hot food,
a drink as well as food and rest for the horses. These
tracks were used to move goods through the maquis
from Malaga to Granada along the mountains. At the
end of the journey there are several disused lime kilns,
witnesses to the craft that in times gone by used to
provide an income for the inhabitants of these lands.
OROGRAPHY The proposed journey is situated on the south slope of
Sierra Almijara and Sierra Tejeda Nature Reserve; it
keeps mainly to the municipality of Canillas de Albaida,
in the Axarquia. It goes along very rugged and seemingly
inaccessible valleys, where you can appreciate the
beauty of the water, the flora and the buildings of the
area. The route offers spectacular panoramic views
thanks to which you can see the changing terrain of
the area, from a predominance of greys and whites of
the marble and dolomites to the browns and dark greys
of the shale and gneiss.
As you walk through Cortijo de Camacho and follow
the path until you cross the gully at Fuente de la Teja
you come across the carbonate materials of the area
and the sand from the erosion of the rocks.
At Puerto Blanquillo you can notice the whiteness of
the area, which results from the geological composition
of the rocks and sand (light marble).
81
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS VENTAS PATH
The path continues with Cerro Verde on the right and
main track of the Sierra on the left; the latter links
Competa with Frigiliana along dark chalky terrain given
the presence of graphite.
How to get there Canillas de Albaida is a mountain village which is
576 meters above sea level; it lies between Sierra de
Tejeda and Sierra Almijara. It is 3 km from Cómpeta,
and the easiest way to get there from Malaga is by the
E-15/A-7 towards Almería, taking exit 277 towards
Algarrobo/N-340a/Costa/Caleta de Vélez. Here you
join the A-7206 towards Algarrobo which links with the
MA-104, where you take the MA-111 and MA-112. The
latter leads to Canillas de Albaida, which is situated
21 km from the coast.
Description of the route The route begins in the picnic area belonging to the
Andalusian Regional Government’s Environment
Agency (Agencia de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de
82
Andalucía), built in an old generating station (photo
1) which produced electricity for the towns of Archez,
Canillas and Columbela and to power a small saw-mill;
this is the confluence of the streams of the plain of
Turvilla and the one that comes from Cueva de Melero,
and is the beginning of the route. The path leaves from the Casa Albergue and climbs
parallel to the stream, which you cross at first to go
along the right bank and go into a small wood in which,
as a result of the shade provided by the branches and
the humidity of water all year round, there is plentiful
vegetation; there are many plants and trees (oak and
ash trees, brambles, wild roses, buckthorn, weeping
willow, ivy, bracken, etc.) After this leg you go past the
remains of a building that was part of the generating
station (photo 2) and which was used to transform
water power into electricity.
After you cross the stream several times you reach
the first farm, known as Cortijo del Chato or de Melero

stream (to the right is another path which climbs to
the track that runs from Salares to Canillas).
Soon the track enters a pine forest and then becomes
a path, once more along the stream; here the water
disappears almost completely from the surface and
flows under the gravel, which means this part is almost
always dry. At this point you notice that the path starts
to climb gradually; soon a slope appears and you go
along a zigzagging and boxed path that leads to the
cultivated plain of Cortijo el Chaparral (photo 4) and La
Lagunilla. Here you see walnut and chestnut trees and,
right on the path, a great cork oak which is reputedly
the biggest and oldest of Sierra Tejeda.
(photo 3), right in front of a cavity in the rock. Cueva de
Melero is in fact a natural shelter used as an enclosure
for goats. You reach a fork in the path; the path to the
left leads to the stream and then to a farm in ruins,
known as “Paco el Manco”, and to the cave known as
Cueva de Melero. You take the path to the right and
reach a track which runs upstream, parallel to the
After this you reach Arroyo del Barranco de la Mina,
which usually has water all year round; this is the
start of the hardest part of the route which maintains
its intensity until you reach the pass at Puerto
Blanquillo.
83
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAS VENTAS PATH
Right away you reach another building, Cortijo de
Camacho (photo 5), and the path continues until you
cross the gully at Fuente de la Teja, where you can see
carbonated material and sand from its erosion. You
leave another farm behind you, this one called “Los
Castaños”, built on a previous one known as “Antón
Pérez”. From here you join the main track which is
chained to prevent vehicular traffic. The path, which
now goes along pine trees and undergrowth, continues
84
until you reach a torrent and ends 200 m from Puerto
Blanquillo (1,208 m, the highest point of the route)
and which is easily identified by its whiteness (photo 6)
due to the geological composition of its rock and sand
(light marble). You climb up a short but steep stretch

(slopes formed during the building of the track) and
zigzag along the track. This is the most difficult part
of the route.
You cross the track and, leaving behind another path
on the left which goes north and heads to the pass at
Puerto de Competa, you go down heading south along
the rocky soil of the dry Arroyo Juan Rojo, which soon
becomes an easy path. These are the old drovers’ routes
that lead to Granada, passing next to the ruins of the
old inn Venta de Cándido (photo 7). The route continues
along stony, uncomfortable terrain. You leave behind
a limestone quarry and reach a humid area of flat
ground which contains plenty of vegetation and trees
(pine trees, poplars, eucalyptus trees, gorse, rockrose,
Jerusalem sage, Rosemary, etc.) which surround the

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LA TEJA AND LA MESA PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The aim has been to recover the ancient paths used
by the inhabitants of Comares to reach one of the
districts of this town. The area was very busy as the
main economic activity was agriculture.
OROGRAPHY This path is situated in the Axarquia, on the slopes of
the Malaga Mountains and goes along the hill at Cerro
de Maxmullar, the highest point of the municipality.
You carry on left among holm oak and fig trees and,
after two forks, the path, which still has the remains
of the Arab cobbles, starts to climb to the right. Here
you can see carob trees, mastic, cornicabra olives, and
holm oak trees…all the way to Mesa de Maxmullar. All
along this part of the route you can enjoy magnificent
views of the Axarquia. Once you get to Mesa you can
see the archeological remains of a Mozarab settlement
(photo 1) and a small lookout, on the right, and a water
tank (photo 2) built in the XIV century, on the left.
How to get there Comares is in the province of Malaga, 35 km from the
city. You reach it by car from the district of El Palo, on
the way to Olias along the MA-3111.
Description of the route The itinerary begins in the district of “El Ventorro” in
Comares, 535 m above sea level and 100 m from the bus
stop, going towards Comares. It goes up a very steep
cement track and 160 m later it joins a beaten track.
89
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LA TEJA AND LA MESA PATH
The route goes back down the same way it came up
until you reach the fork that links the cement track with
the beaten track; it carries on passing by a group of
houses called “Las Lomas”, until you reach the road.
Carry on left towards Comares and, after a while, you
come to a cement track on the left; at the beginning this
is the entrance to a house but then goes parallel along
a path which goes round the property along the right.
This track leads to a road at a sharp bend and continues
straight on along another cement track which then
becomes a beaten track. The path continues, avoiding
a fork to the right, and starts to descend to the next
fork where you turn right until you reach, on the right,
a path which climbs to Fuente de la Teja amidst fruit
trees (photo 3); vegetation here is very lush. Return to
the track along the same path and continue towards
Comares, ignoring the track that goes down to the
left several meters away. You pass by Fuente Delgada
(photo 4) and cross the road. 200 m further, you reach
Fuente Gorda (photo 5) and continue along a path on

the right which is an old Mozarab stairs until you cross
a Roman road and arrive at the view-point known as
“La Puerta de Vélez” (photo 6), which was the old way
in and out of Comares.
Inside the town you are faced with typical Moorish
streets and beautiful spots decorated with flowers,
with whitewashed walls. You go straight up a cobbled

serve as a guide around the town and take visitors to
the important monuments such as the XVI century
church of Our Lady of Encarnación; the walls of the old
fortress; the Arches; the Bakery, from where you can
catch a general view of the town and which together
with the Little Bakery were once watch towers; or
the Coracha which allowed people to go down to the
fountain protected from attacks. Here you reach some
stairs which you ignore as you need to go left, passing
through one of the town’s three Mozarab arches and

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY Apart from its scenery and being within the limits of
the Nature Reserve, the interest of this route lies in in
part in the recovery of ancient routes; an example is
the first section which is a very well-kept cobbled main
road. This main road was the way used by the villagers
to get to Granada with their cattle. You can also see
an old stone hut used as shelter from the inclemency
of the weather. From the summit (el Collado) you can see part of Sierra
Almijara, including Pico Lucero, the pass at Puerto de
Frigiliana, La Cadena, El Navachica and then the sea.
You can also see Cerro Gavilan with its look-out post
for sighting forest fires, the Barranco Moreno Valley
and the Juan Rojo Valley.
Here you come across a path that leads down to
the “Casa de la Mina”, which owes its name to the
existence of a spring that has been carved out by a
mining tunnel.
At the final section of the journey you can see the
remains of several lime kilns which serve as a reminder
of the crafts that used to bring an income for the inhabitants of the area.
OROGRAPHY Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara, both declared
Hunting Nature Reserves and included in the Catalogue
of Protected Areas and Real Estate of the Andalusian
Regional Government, cover an area of approximately
20,543 hectares and include the villages of Alcaucin,
Canillas de Aceituno, Sedella, Salares, Canillas de
Albaida, Competa, Frigiliana and Nerja.
It is a chalky, marble massif interspersed with mica
schist. From the geomorphological point of view, it is
undergoing a process of Mediterranean karstification.
The composition of the track is mainly eroded chalky
rock as a result of which there are many loose stones
along the way.

How to get there The distance from Malaga to Cómpeta is 55.2 km and
the journey takes around 56 minutes. You leave Malaga
along the E-15/A-7 towards Almería, and after 33.4 km
you take exit 277 towards Algarrobo/N-340a/Costa/
Caleta de Vélez. Here you join the A-7206 towards
Algarrobo which joins the MA-104 towards Cómpeta,
where you take the MA-111 and MA-112. Cómpeta is
at the end of the latter.
Description of the route The route starts in Plaza de la Axarquía, (photo 1) in
Cómpeta, which in Arab means “crossroads” and which
is situated in the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama
Nature Reserve. You go up its streets and reach the
estate of Las Colmenillas (photo 2). Here you leave the
tarmac and join a cobbled track (photo 3) which is still
in a good state of repair as it used to be the old way that
farmers used to get their cattle to Granada.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FRIGILIANA RÍO HIGUERÓN - CRUZ DE PINTO PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY Frigiliana has important Arab roots which are easy to
see in the layout of the town, with its narrow streets
and steep hills. Frigiliana was an important place in
Spain during the Moorish uprising. The town has one
of the most authentic examples of traditional Arab
architecture in Spain- the Moorish district or Upper
Town (Barrio Alto).
It has been inhabited since 3,000 BC and was a settlement in Phoenician and Roman times. The latter built
a fortress and gave the town its name, which means
“property or town of Frexinius”. However, the town as
we now know it dates from the IX or X centuries, with
the construction of a castle, which no longer exists,
around which people started to build several dwellings.
At the time of the Caliphs the area was known as Hins
Challana, and as Fixmiana during Nazari times.
As with many other towns in Sierra de la Almijara
and the nearby Alpujarras, the main economic activity
was the silk industry along with the production of oil,
grapes and figs. Following the fall of the kingdom of
Granada, during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs,
the population continued being Moorish and their way
of life did not change.
However, with time, the relationship between the Moors
and the ruling Christians deteriorated, mainly due to
the excessive taxes which the Moors had to pay and the
increasing restrictions imposed upon their traditions
and the practice of their religion. As a result, as with
the other towns in the kingdom, the Moors rose against
royal authority.
The fortress and rock at Frigiliana dominated Sierra
de la Almijara and was a place that was easy to defend
and difficult to reach. It is therefore easy to see why
a large group of Moorish rebels sheltered there in
1568. This led to an important battle which is vividly
commemorated using ceramic tiles which have been
placed around the streets. The battle was won by the
103
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FRIGILIANA RÍO HIGUERÓN - CRUZ DE PINTO PATH
troops under Luis de Requesens and the Moors were
expelled from their lands and scattered all over the
Iberian Peninsula; at the same time Frigiliana was
populated with Christians.
During the XVII century Frigiliana stagnated with a
population of not more than one hundred inhabitants.
Iñigo Manrique was appointed Count of Frigiliana in
May 1640. The expulsion of the Moors led to the disappearance of the silk industry; from then on people
concentrated on growing sugar cane. An example of
this is the “Ingenio” or refinery building which still
stands and which dates from the XVI century. The
Apero Palace or the Church of Saint Anthony also dates
from this period.
Under Phillip IV the town was granted a royal charter
and many years later, towards the end of the XIX
century, the population rose to over 3,000.
104
OROGRAPHY Frigiliana is situated on the eastern part of the Axarquia,
near the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Nature
Reserve which is an impressive massif which acts as a
barrier between the provinces of Malaga and Granada.
The town is 300 meters above sea level. The prosed
path goes along the sides of Sierra Almijara, which
gets its name from the Arab word “almijar” which
means “drain”.
How to get there From Malaga to Frigiliana there are 58.8 km and the
journey takes about 52 minutes. You leave Malaga
along the Motorway E-15/A-7 towards Almeria, until
you reach exit 292 after 48.9 km. From here you take
the Nerja and Frigiliana road, and continue along
the MA-5105.

Sierra Almijara, and separates the valleys of the Rivers
Higuerón and Chillar, and is 1,181 m high.
which gives its name to the square at the start of this
route. Several meters to the right is the sign for the
path that goes up to Fuente del Esparto, situated on
the river Chillar.
This is an area of vertical ravines, narrow passes and
ravines. You head to the Guardia Civil Barracks, situated
at a crossroads, where there is a potable water fountain
on the right (photo 2). Go down a very steep concrete
street, called “Camino del Boticario”, until the River
Higuerón, ignoring a path on the left which also heads
to the river. Once at the river (photo 3), you start a gentle
ascent towards Alberca de Batán and the “Pinarillo
Espeso” picnic area, with its barbecues, tables and pine
trees. You go past an artificial waterfall to the left and
reach the previously mentioned Alberca or reservoir
(photo 4). This part of the journey runs parallel to the
well-known Acequia de Lizar, which used to power the
Ingenio (the only sugar-cane honey factory in Europe)
105
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • FRIGILIANA RÍO HIGUERÓN - CRUZ DE PINTO PATH
The journey continues along the river until, just less
than 1 km away, and, just before the picnic area, a
path goes up to the right where there is a pine tree
with a v-shaped trunk. You reach a tributary of the
river Higuerón and you continue to climb left until you
take another path to the right which leads to the Hill
that separates the valleys of the rivers Higuerón and
Chillar, 640 m above sea level. Go along the path that
leads to Fuente del Esparto keeping to this path for a
short while until it soon turns left. Some meters away
there is a path, to the left, which climbs to the highest
point of the area where you can enjoy marvelous views
of the town and of Cruz de Pinto.
The path goes down along the ridge towards the hill
Collado de la Cruz de Pinto, and passes behind a light

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The aim has been to recover the ancient paths used
by the inhabitants of the area to reach Benaque, one
of Macharaviaya’s districts. The area was very busy as
the main economic activity was agriculture.
OROGRAPHY This path is situated in the Axarquia. It goes along
agricultural land, among vineyards, almond and

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • MOCLINEJO - EL BORGE PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The towns of Almachar, Moclinejo, El Borge, Cutar,
Comares and Totalan form the well-known Route of the
Raisin; the climate here is conducive to the cultivation
of vineyards, whose fruit (the Muscatel grape) turns to
raisins on the raisin beds which are scattered along
their slopes. An ancestral art dominated by the sun.
OROGRAPHY Moclinejo is situated in the interior of the Axarquia, on
a side of the hill called Piedras Blancas. It sits among
scenery of steep hills covered in olive trees, almond
trees and vineyards. El Borge, also in the Axarquia,
borders with the mountains of Malaga and is surrounded
by holm oaks forests, rockrose and broom in an area
dominated by vineyards and where there are numerous
houses with raisin beds. This is why it is known as “la
villa de la pasa” or “the raisin town”.
How to get there: From Málaga to Moclinejo there are 27 km and
the journey takes around 37 minutes by car. Leave
Malaga along the E-15/A-7 towards Almería/Málaga
Este. Take the exit to Torre de Benalgalbón/MA-107/
Benagalbón, and go up the road until the MA-3200’s exit
to Benagalbón, and then take the MA-3200, MA-3119,
and MA-3114. Then take the MA-3109 to El Borge.
Description of the route The route begins in Moclinejo, under its great Arab
Archway. You walk along its steep streets and enjoy
the balconies, the flowers, the fountains and the
whitewashed walls, so typical of the villages of the
Axarquia. You reach a very narrow street which runs
parallel to the football ground and which leads to the
road. Walk along a path parallel to it for 40 m under
the shade of the pine trees, and at an old well turn left
to start to climb up a fairly steep beaten track until you
get to the Piedras Blancas (where you will see a trig
point). Before this you pass a fork where you continue

From here the views are spectacular: to the south
Moclinejo and the sea beyond; to the north Sierra
Tejeda and its majestic Maroma and, to the west
Totalán and in the distance Monte de San Antón and
Monte de Santo Pitar.
The journey continues along the Las Tapias track which
goes along vineyards until the Antequera track. Before
heading left you can see the old winepress, Lagar de
Frontilla, which is now in disrepair but which was once
very important.
Climbing towards Cerro de Córdoba you go right and
go along a plain towards El Borge. You can now see
Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara, Comares up in the
distance, and the valley of the river El Borge, with the
town in the distance.

You now descend gently, going through vineyards along
an easy track. You will see small farms here, some of
which are abandoned while others are working ones;

is one of the biggest in the area.
As the ground is so mountainous, you find yourself
going up or down, depending on where you are heading.
You cross numerous tributaries of the river El Borge

can see fig trees, pomegranates, avocados, custard
apples and pear trees. At Loma del Tío Moscla, you

trees, fig trees, rockrose until you reach a large
dilapidated farm, La Charata. This type of vegetation
will continue all the way down until an area known
as Las Perrillas.
To reach the end of the journey you have to climb up
a track where you see farms and vineyards. Once you
reach a fork from where you can see El Borge, go right
and go down a dusty, zigzagging track until you reach
a track that runs parallel to the river El Borge. Turn
right and gradually follow the track, amidst bamboos
and oleander. After the football ground, you reach El
Borge, the end of the route.
At the end of the climb you head right along a path,
which is initially narrow and which runs parallel to the
stream, Arroyo de la Charata. Suddenly the vegetation

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • MOCLINEJO - TOTALÁN PATH
How to get there There are 27 km from Málaga to Moclninejo and the
journey takes 37 minutes by car. Leave Malaga along
the E-15/A-7 towards Almería/Málaga Este. Take the
exit to Torre de Benalgalbón/MA-107/Benagalbón, and
go along the road until the MA-3200 (exit Benagalbón),
to take the MA-3200, MA-3119, and MA-3114.
Description of the route This route runs through the heart of the Axarquia,
linking the villages of Moclinejo and Totalán. The route
begins under the gate at the entrance to Moclinejo
and continues up to the road that leads to Almáchar.
Here you reach a horizontal well where a short, steep
path sets off; at the end of it you turn left and continue
along a track from where you get some amazing views
(photo 1). Here you see a 663 m trig point (photo 2),
where you follow the path to the left and go up and
down heading to the top of Piedras Blancas (673 m),
where you see a fork next to an electricity pylon.
You continue along the path to the right and after
passing some houses you reach the area of Alto de
Lema (584 m) where the track ends and becomes a
path through ancient holm oak trees (photo 3). At this
point you need to concentrate on the path as it crosses
several others on several occasions. In order not to
get lost you need to continue on the path that allows
you to see Totalán. This path widens out to become a
123
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • MOCLINEJO - TOTALÁN PATH
track which then becomes a small path which climbs
to the top of Cota Vareno (501 m) (photo 4). At the start
there are two paths, one that goes up to the summit
and another that goes round it; both end up in the
same place. After Cota Vareno the path becomes a
passable track.
After 1 kilometer, you come to a fork where you head
sharp right, right next to several small solar panels.
This is the start of the descent to the stream, Arroyo
Totalán (230 m.), at the bottom of the village that bears
its name; you go down a tarmac hill that takes you to
Totalán, the end of the route.

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY This path uses the route of the old funicular railway that
linked Periana and Venta de Zafarraya. The aim is to
recover and promote the old Riogordo to Alhama road.
The end of the route can be reached from Malaga by
the A-45 towards Casabermeja, joining the MA-3100,
towards Riogordo, and taking the diversion along the
A-356 to Mondrón.
OROGRAPHY The route goes through the Axarquia municipalities
of Venta de Zafarraya and Periana, which are situated
near to the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Nature
Reserve. It starts along the side of Tajos de la Cueva
and then goes deep into agricultural land. The main
geological materials are dolomites and chalk.
Description of the route This route begins at Puerto de Zafarraya (photo 1), 909
meters above sea level, on the border between the
provinces of Málaga and Granada. You will find path
GR-7/E-4 under the old railway bridge of the line that
linked Periana with Zafarraya and next to the slopes of
Tajos de la Cueva. A few meters away is the viewpoint,
Mirador de Boquete (photo 2), from where you will enjoy
magnificent views of the Axarquia, Lake Viñuela and the
summit of La Maroma which forms part of the Sierra
Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Nature Reserve. This area
is made up of dolomite and limestone outcrops and
the climate is severe in autumn and winter due to the
altitude and the harsh topography. Along this part of
the route you may see Spanish ibex and birds of prey. How to get there The start of the route can be reached by car from Malaga
by the E-15/A-7 towards Almería, taking the exit to
Vélez-Málaga (A-356), joining the diversion to Periana
(A-402) and then the diversion to Ventas de Zafarraya
(A-335). From Granada take the A-92 towards Málaga,
then the A-402 towards Alhama de Granada and then
on to Ventas de Zafarraya.

The route continues towards the district of Machamona,
situated at the top of a small hill. 1 kilometer away,
before reaching it, the path heads left along a track
that heads down towards the small village of Guaro,
713 meters above sea level, where you find the source
of the river Guaro (photo 4). Cross this village along its
main street and the route continues along a cement
The vegetation is Mediterranean scrubland, such as
gorse, thyme, and rosemary and spurge flax. Without
leaving the main track, you pass by some houses which
have given an old farm its name (photo 3) and are called
Casas de Carrión. You reach a fork at the top of Cerro

track in a poor state of repair and with little traffic; you
then reach the junction with the MA-4103 local road,
along which you will find little traffic, and which links
Alfarnate with Periana. Cross the track and continue
along a beaten track (the old way from Riogordo to
Alhama), which first crosses the farm at Cerrillo and
then the one at Zapata; a short while later, a detour to
the left leads to the town of Baños de Vilo, well-known
for its waters. The proposed route ignores this detour
to the left and follows the main track until the ruins of
the old farm at Cortijo de Las Monjas. Just after this
farm, GR-7 turns left, and this is the place where our
route ends.
At this junction you have the alternative of going to the
small village of Mondrón, 1 kilometer away. This route
goes straight on along a cement track, leaving a large
water tank to the right and an enclosed well a short
while later to the left. All along this part of the route
you will see olive and almond trees, along with several
poplars and walnut trees. Further down you reach the

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY Apart from the magnificent scenery surrounding it and
the beauty of the village, this path winds through narrow
paths and tracks which up until recently had been a
means of communication which modern rambling
wants to recover; for example, the old “Camino del
Arriero” or drover’s road which the inhabitants used
to reach the mill and the peaks at La Maroma, El Salto
del Caballo, and Cerro El Fuerte. Other interesting
places are the Arab Bridge which linked the village
of Salares with the Barranco de las Minas (Gully of
the Mines), where they extracted the salt which the
village owes its name to. Walking through the two
villages along the route allows the visitor to see and
to appreciate the streets and the architecture of the
villages in this region. OROGRAPHY The terrain at the start is mainly slate up until the hill at
Collado de Monticara and then turns to chalk, dolomites
and sand. It is a chalky, marble massif interspersed
with mica schist. From the geomorphological point
of view, it is undergoing a process of Mediterranean
karstification. The composition of the track is mainly
chalky rock as a result of which there are many loose
stones along the way.
How to get there There are 63.1 kilometers from Malaga to Sedella
and the journey takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. Leave
Malaga along the E-15/A-7 towards Almería, and,
after 33.4 km take exit 277 towards Algarrobo/N-340a/
Costa/Caleta de Vélez. From here you link up with the
A-7206 towards Algarrobo which then joins the MA-104,
MA-111, MA-5103 and 5104, MA-4108 and MA-4107.
Description of the route The route starts along the road that goes from Canillas
de Aceituno to Sedella MA-126 (photo 1). Take a beaten
track to the right towards Canillas de Aceituno, on
Cerro de Pozanco, and climb to the Sedella picnic
area (photo 2). Continue zigzagging along it, along
133

abandoned terraced olive groves and an old holm oak.
Once up at the picnic area you can take a rest in the
shade of reforested pines and enjoy the views of the
Maroma, the Tajo de los Almanchares, the sea and
part of Sierra Almijara.
Continue along a flat track, skirting the hill, Cerro El
Juncal, which is barren, and reach Sedella’s water
tank. From here you begin to descend to Molino de
Montosa (photo 3) from where, along a path among
crops (potatoes, beans, tomatoes, depending on the
season), you reach several carob trees and holm oak
trees and irrigation channels that take you to Sedella
(photo 4).
Turn left, northeast, towards a Roman bridge and,
skirting Cerro del Tablón, you leave behind all the
houses until the track gradually narrows and becomes
a path running parallel to the river, Río de la Fuente. In
134
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • SEDELLA - SALARES PATH
the distance is the Roman bridge (photo 5), surrounded
by slate, pine trees and oleander.
This is the start of the hardest part of the route as
you need to climb to go through the hollow, Hoya de
Salamanca, following a track that is still partially
cobbled, amongst thyme, gorse and fire orchids. The
climb is steep so it has to be taken slowly until you
135
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • SEDELLA - SALARES PATH
reach Corral de la Herreriza, with its ancient walnut
tree (photo 6). Continue to climb up to the stream at
Hoya de Salamanca and, after crossing it, you will
see a threshing area that is almost hidden amidst the
vegetation but from where you get impressive views
of Sedella and Sierra Tejeda.
The path leads to some irrigation channels and then
the track Carril de la Cruz del Muerto, from where you
can see Salares in the distance.
This track skirts Cerro Marchena and is shaded by
the eucalyptus trees that border it. Go past a fountain
(photo 7) and over a bridge that crosses Arroyo de
Salares, and then climb until the eucalyptus trees
disappear and give way to cypress and pine trees.
Soon you reach a track that zigzags down to the right
and leads to the heliport (photo 8) and later to Casa
de Haro (photo 9), surrounded by orange, lemon and
avocado pear trees.
136
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • SEDELLA - SALARES PATH
Continue descending until you reach the stream, where
an amazing holm oak and cork oak wood begins. The
path narrows and goes up and down parallel to the
stream, Arroyo de Salares. The vegetation along the
banks is very noticeable (poplars, oleander, juniper,
honeysuckle, or ivy) and forms a green corridor as you
walk towards Salares.
137
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • SEDELLA - SALARES PATH
800 meters before the village, the path is narrow and
can cause some problems if you are not careful, so
great care is needed along this leg.
The irrigation channels (photo 10) lead to Sedella along
a track that turns cobbled at the end and which leads
to the Arab bridge (photo 11) which allows you to cross
the stream and reach the centre of Salares along a
cobbled street.
Originally, the bridge linked Salarea to the gully,
Barranco de las Minas, where they used to get the
salt to which the village owes its name. 138

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY One of the main reasons for doing this route is undoubtedly
the impressive scenery around Sierra Tejeda. For most
of the journey you can enjoy marvelous views of the
south face of La Maroma; the gorge at Tajos de la
Capellania, and the gullies formed by the streams
at Arroyo del Saltito and Arroyo de la Fuente which
then become the river and the gully at Barranco de
los Almanchares. Another interesting spot is the mill
at Molino de Montosa which was in use until recently
to produce flour. At present it is used as a Workshop
School, which has facilitated its maintenance. Climbing towards El Fuerte you come across the remains
of a lime kiln, an example of one of the crafts carried
out by the inhabitants of the area, and the fountain
known as “la pisadica del Niño Dios”. You will also see
the warden’s hut where the wardens of the Sierra used
to shelter from the inclement weather. This is a truly
interesting journey through one of the villages along
the Axarquia cornice. OROGRAPHY The terrain at the start is mainly slate up until the hill at

From here you reach the water tank (photo 3), where
you can see the coast, and then continue along a

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY La Viñuela lies at a crossroad on the Periana corridor
which links up with the valley of Velez and which is
also crossed by the path, Vereda de Antequera. As a
result it is important to conserve this track, given its
significance in the development of the village. It is worth highlighting that along its route there are
several archeological sites and a fountain which has
medicinal properties.
OROGRAPHY There are two orographic areas in Viñuela : the North
one with a rolling relief and a predominance of olive
trees and cereals, where you find the reservoir that
carries its name and which is fed by the river Guaro,
and the South one which is more abrupt and which
extends into the mountains of the Axarquia with a relief
that is dominated by hills made of slate and covered
by thick bushes.
There are very high mountains here. The highest are to
the southwest near Velez-Malaga, namely Cerro Agudo
(558 meters) and Cerro de la Atalaya (461 meters) which
is the most southern point of the municipal district.
How to get there There are 48.6 kilometers from Malaga to the Axarquia
Visitors’ Center in La Viñuela and the journey takes
about 48 minutes. Leave Malaga along the E-15/A-7
towards Almería, and after 33.4 km take exit 272
towards Vélez-Málaga. From here you join the A-356
Vélez-Málaga/Viñuela/Colmenar/Zafarraya and, after
11.1 km, turn into the A-7205.
Description of the route The path begins at the picnic area or visitors’ centre.

As far as fauna is concerned, you will see eagles (Golden
Eagles, Bonelli’s Eagles, Booted Eagles and Short-toed

LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY Salares is an exceptional place. There are archeological
remains, a Moorish tower and an Arab bridge. This
makes it an essential place to visit. The creation of
this path will lead to the promotion of tourism in the

OROGRAPHY Salares is situated at the foot of Sierra Tejeda and is
bordered by the river Salares. This makes its orography
steep, with high hills and terraced areas. Its land
extends along a narrow stretch from the mountain

How to get there: There are 60.7 km from Malaga to Salares and the
journey takes 1 hour 5 minutes. Leave Malaga along
the E-15/A-7 towards Almería, and then after 33.4 km
take exit 277 towards Algarrobo/N-340a/Costa/Caleta
de Vélez. From here join the A-7206 towards Algarrobo

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • EL MONTE PATH
Climb up a cobbled path through walnut trees, orange
trees and tropical trees. At the first fork, head right
walking through thyme, rosemary, broom and several
holm oak trees. The ground is stony and rough but a
wooden handrail protects you from falling down the
steep slope. You reach a small terrace from where you
can enjoy marvelous views (photo 2) of Sedella, Salares
and its Mudejar tower and Sierra Tejeda which rises
to its summit, La Maroma.
Around here the pine trees become more abundant
and the Mediterranean vegetation around you is more
intense. The path continues to climb among olive and
pine trees until it reaches the track to Canillas de
Albaida. At this junction turn right to go down a beaten
track. The ground is firm and easy to walk on. From
this point (photo 3) you can see Canillas de Albaida
and Competa, and Sierra de Almijara with the passes
at Puerto Mollano and Competa.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • EL MONTE PATH
The track continues down among almond trees, olive
trees, holm oak trees, cornicabra olive trees and
kermes oak trees. You will also see birds of prey like
Bonelli’s eagles and kestrels although the most iconic
bird is the Spanish ibex.
Continue the route ignoring all the forks and following
the main track. The route ends in the area known as
“Los Tajos” on the road that leads to Salares.

PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAGOS - ALGARROBO PATH
LOCAL ANTHROPOLOGY The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
There was an Iberian or late Bronze Age settlement
in Morro de Mezquitilla. When the Phoenicians settled
there it was a sort of peninsula situated at the entrance
of a cove where layers of sediment built up over the
years due to deforestation and terracing in the area; this
resulted in the village gradually finding itself further
and further from the coast. The Romans also passed through here and they revived
the village, founding a more prosperous colony further
to the east. After the fall of the Roman Empire the
Arabs revived the village until its surrender to the
Catholic Monarchs. In 1821 the village requested
permission to form a constitutional town hall, leading
to its independence.
All this history and the examples of previous civilizations
make this journey worthwhile.
OROGRAPHY The Axarquia is situated within the Sistema Penibetico
Mountains which run parallel to the coast, as a result
of which the mountains fall quickly into the sea. This
has resulted in erosion which has led to the formation
of coves and small valleys. Its relief is an absolute
tangle of mountains which are generally not very high
but which do not follow an even distribution; this has
resulted in many undulations, leading to steep slopes
and narrow valleys. HOW TO GET THERE Take the old N-340 along the coast towards VelezMalaga and you reach the mouth of the River Lagos,
the starting point of the path. Go up the track which is
parallel to the river Lagos, away from the sea, walking
past greenhouses, reed beds and fruit trees. Once past
the motorway tunnel, turn right and several meters
further on you see a number of signs put up by the
Regional Government of Andalusia. Follow the one to
the right, “Camino de Lagos a Sayalonga”.
155
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAGOS - ALGARROBO PATH
DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE The principal vegetation is Mediterranean bush and
the main trees are almond trees, olives trees and fruit
groves such as avocado pears.
The track mainly climbs, and after several forks to
the right you reach an area known as “el Caserio del
Catalan” (the Cataln’s house). Walk between the stream
at arroyo de Sevilla and the river Lagos, gradually
climbing up and then you can see the Bay of Malaga
(photo 1). At the hill at Loma de las Lagunillas, turn
left to start a climb that takes you through small tool
sheds that have been turned into houses with their
own gardens.
Turn left and you reach the highest point of the journey:
Carraspite. From here you can see the summit at Pico
de la Maroma (2,065 meters) (photo 2), Sayalonga (photo
3), Corumbela, the valley formed by the rivers Algarrobo
and Sayalonga and, of course, the ever-present sea. You
start your descent through some houses surrounded by
156
olive trees, oleanders and cypresses; at a crossing you
go straight on and then turn immediately left. This is
signposted and leads you to an ancient Arab reservoir
which was built to provide water for travellers.
The path descends and winds its way through almond
and olive groves and abandoned farms. When you
come to the numerous junctions you will need to
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAGOS - ALGARROBO PATH
remember that you are heading south west, and not
towards the sea. On reaching the farm at Cortijo de
Terrenes you can see Algarrobo with its white houses
against Sierra de Bentomiz. You cross the Competa
to Velez-Malaga path and follow some sharp, tarmac
bends bordered by avocado pear trees; you need to
take special care here.
Still going down, you reach the first houses in the village
right opposite the Guardia Civil barracks, you cross the
road, walk through a narrow street and reach the end
of the route at the Municipal Park.
There are records of the village of Algarrobo since
Prehistoric times in the Neolithic site in the cave at
Cueva del Algarrobo, in the Copper Age site in Morro de
la Mezquitilla and in the archeological site at Trayamar
which has the most important Paleo-punic remains of
the Western Mediterranean (700 BC) which are open
to the public. 157
PATHS IN THE AXARQUIA • LAGOS - ALGARROBO PATH
The most outstanding features of this route are the
views of the Bay of Malaga and of the Sierra Tejeda,
Almijara and Alhama Nature Reserve (photo 4).
About 9 kilometers away from the route there is an Arab
reservoir, living proof of the settlement that existed
in the area.
