THE SCIENCE OF NOTHING
Macro Patterns & Micro Patterns
Avid hunters are always looking for
that certain “something” that will
improve their chances for success
in the field. They want to sound like
“something.” The want to smell like
“something.” They want to look like
“something.” In the end, trying to
appear, sound or smell like “something” isn’t nearly as effective as
becoming NOTHING.
The human body has what is known as signature. Made up of identifiable lines and obvious symmetry that is easily recognized by humans and particularly by their

prey. By interrupting those lines and the body’s symmetry with a macro pattern of light and dark blobs and streaks, immediate identification is disrupted. But nature
is made up of more than the lights and darks that make up the positive and negative shapes in the world around us. Fine texture defines our world. Therefore, overlaid
on the macro pattern, is a fractal geometry based micro-pattern.

Five Mountain Ranges …
One Bull
Dropping our packs after the long climb, we shed sweatsoaked base layers in silence, urgently tugging on dry
clothes, shooting light coming fast. The wind swirled around
us. We hoped it would cover the rustle of fabric and murmur
of zippers and, more importantly, not eddy our scent into the
timbered ridges above. As dawn came on, my friend Chris
Awe spotted a herd of elk on the adjacent mountaintop. They
were already on the move. We’d have to try to catch them in
the timber. But an awful lot of rugged southwestern Montana
country separated us from the elk.
We chose a nearby ridge and began picking our
way upwind through massive old firs and over the gnarled
skeletons of trees that stood tall long before Montana became
a state. Rounding a head-high boulder, I spotted several
cows in an opening 120 yards up the ridge. Ducking back,
I signaled to Chris that we had elk ahead. I leaned my bow
against the rock and slowly eased out to peek around the
boulder. This high on the mountain the timber was windscoured and I noticed an alley any elk coming from below
would likely use to reach where the cows were currently

feeding. I ranged the corridor at 77 yards and glanced at my
bow propped against the backside of the rock, 5 yards away.
When I looked back a six-point bull filled the corridor. And
there was my bow, 5 steps out of reach, leaving me pinned
down with no way to close the gap.
The bull went on and I slunk back to my bow, exchanged a That was pretty stupid, huh? glance with Chris, then
headed in on a stalk. The wind was right, the cover was good
and it was all coming together. Redemption was at hand. I
was at full draw with the 6x6 for a long minute… 60 yards, 40,
30, 20 … and never an angle that I felt good about. He never
showed any sign he knew I was there, but he was constantly
quartering towards me, or dead on. Finally, I let down and he
walked on into the
timber and over
the ridgeline.
Chris and
I quickly did the
same, stalking
as silently as we
could toward an
adjacent ridge,
trying to parallel
the bull, hoping we
might be able to outflank him. The area reeked of elk. Stopping
in the shadowed edge of a small opening, we sipped from our
hydration tubes and looked down into the country to which
he’d led us. Gorgeous. If I were an elk, this is exactly where
I’d be today, I thought, high on this mountain, far from any
road, trying to escape the unseasonable heat and find a cooling
wind. Right now that wind was blowing up the mountain,
directly into our faces.
A bugle rang from the timber below. Then another.
And another. Chris and I listened in amazement. There were at
least six bulls in that little basin, all hollering at each other and
their cows. We agreed not to call at all unless one of us had a
bull down. If we were so fortunate, we’d signal with four long
consecutive cow calls. Hopefully that would lead us together
before a grizzly arrived. Our plan was to split up, circle the
basin and eventually meet up on the other side. We never even
came close.
Not two minutes after I left Chris, a bugle blasted
out of the basin from a few hundred yards off. I immediately
slid behind a big pine, nocked an arrow, donned my facemask
and slipped into the timber below. Skinned and shattered saplings stood before me, the earth was churned black and when I
glanced left I saw a wallow the size of a stock tank. The wind
shifted a bit and I doubled back a couple hundred yards to

change my approach lane.
The hillside below stairstepped through three short
benches then dropped steeply away again. I first spotted the
bull in a small meadow on the lower bench from 125 yards.
This bull dwarfed the six-point I’d been so close to. I glassed
him for only a second, before moving on to see how many
cows he had. Only one! This bull was obviously on a hot cow.
And out of sight just below him was another bull fully aware
of that fact. Perfect. I kept my eyes glued to the cow, only
moving when the bull bugled and she looked the other way.
Over the course of almost 20 bugles, I crept toward
them, finally reaching a deadfall that gave me good cover and
a possible shooting window. The cow was leading him right
below me. I crouched beside the downfall and ranged the trees
on the path she would likely follow—50 yards. I had practiced
religiously for months. If I could just get a clean angle I felt
very confident I could make the shot.
The cow kept coming and the bull stopped in a panel
of sunlight and fired another growl at the bull below him. He
turned and stretched his neck to the ground, twisting his head
to maneuver through the timber. That gave me a good look at
the top of his right beam. Definitely the bull I wanted. I ranged
the cow—48 yards. She stepped forward into a cluster of trees,
and here he came, nose in the air, bugling all the while. And
then, in good karmic fashion, he stopped with only his head
and neck obscured by the timber, no view of me at all, perfectly broadside. In one motion I stood and drew. My pin settled
on his vitals, I slowly exhaled, focused and watched my arrow
disappear about one inch above the spot I’d been concentrating
on.
The bull turned and walked back into the meadow
he’d just littered with bugles. He stopped for a moment in a
shaft of sunlight, pausing to look out across the meadow one
more time. I cow-called softly and he dipped out of sight onto
the bench below.
Seven steps from where he’d stood, my arrow lay in
the grass, fletchings soaked with bright red blood. Somewhere
in the timber beneath me, the largest bull I’d ever arrowed was
mortally wounded. Slowly I sank to the ground to wait.
Bugles sounded from around the basin, bulls and
cows shifting like schools of salmon, life going forward as it
had for every September since elk had called this wilderness
home. I’d hunted more than 20 days, covered more miles on
foot than I could track and glimpsed close to 30 different bulls.
Every one of those bulls lived on public land—some of it wilderness, some of it just country that is, for now, undiminished
by roads. I had hunted five different mountain ranges with five
different partners, and I found myself whispering their names:
Crow & Sara, Ari, Awe, Katie… the Tobacco Roots, Absarokas, Gallatins, Bridgers, Madisons.
Our only guides had been the mountains, the wind,
instinct and the elk themselves. We knew that at every moment
a grizzly, mountain lion or wolf could be stalking the same
bulls we were. It was the real wild. Sitting there waiting to take
up the blood trail, I couldn’t help thinking, I don’t get to do
this again until next September.
After 45 minutes, a blood trail my parent’s dachshund could follow led me 70 yards to the bull. Before I held
his thick beams and dark, deeply grooved dark tines, I sat and
gave thanks, my hand against his golden side. Unfortunately,
the climbing sun said the time for reflection had passed. Temperatures were forecast to reach 80 in the valley below, and the
race was on.
Within half an hour I had the backstraps and tenderloins in
game bags. Chris arrived after my third sequence of our agreed
upon cow calls, just as I was ready to start quartering.
He had been at full draw on a beautiful six point
himself, but never got the angle he needed. I reminded myself
how lucky I am to hunt with someone whose borderline crazy
passion for elk is tempered by a respect that insists on only
ethical shots. And, especially at that moment, who possessed a
strong back and legs, with the will to match.
We worked together to get the quarters free and then
hauled the meat in two heavy trips apiece 200 yards up the
hillside away from the carcass. The antlers, front shoulders,
our bows and remaining gear would be spending the night 12’
up in a tree, pine boughs shading and masking our cache. With
a hindquarter, backstrap and tenderloin loaded into each of
our respective packs, Chris and I began the brutal climb to the
ridgeline. Eight miles and six ridiculous hours later, we were
headed down the road toward a cooler in Bozeman.
As I lay in bed that night, I briefly imagined grizzlies heisting the bull’s shoulders from the tree. I wondered
how warm it would be that night. Then the long day caught up
with me, and I thought no more.
My alarm blared after what seemed like a scant hour
of sleep. My longtime hunting partner and roommate, Andrew
Crow was already packed and eating breakfast when I crawled
into our kitchen. He’d be skipping out of work today to lend a
hand. Chris arrived before I’d finished my first cup of coffee,
ready to do it all over again. Thank goodness for great friends.
By four that afternoon we were back at the truck,
completely haggard, but the meat was still good, the rack was
incredible, and all of it was out of the woods. Sleep came even
easier that night.

“No Chance”
The scouting process for an upcoming season begins at the end
of the previous season. Literally, the closing of one season marks
the beginning of the next. With trail cams set, aggressive scouting,
filming, and primarily shed hunting, I’m able to find out which
animals have survived a season and will be on the map for the
next year’s clients. Due to the open terrain of Kansas, much of the
filming and sighting of deer is from a vehicle. But shed antlers
and trail cam pictures are the true testament of the caliber, age, and
health of an animal.
With early spring comes food plot planting. Whitetails are
browsers. They have an extremely wide ranging diet, and will
never settle on only one source of food. Food plots are as crucial
to the habit of a Whitetail as they are to the habitat of a Whitetail.
The maintenance of several hundred acres of food plots (in over
40 locations), and 4 different counties, makes scouting a yearlong
process.
Constantly learning about Whitetails continues to prove how little
we truly know about them. Even the most predictable buck can,
and most likely will, at some point leave you looking like a fool.
You have to know where to put a hunter, when they need to be
there, how they need to hunt, and why that particular place is the
place to be at that time.
As an Outfitter, the knowledge I have gained about an area or
animal, prior to the start of a hunt, is what lessens the degree of
“chance”. Furthermore, the importance of year-round scouting is
only realized with the tagging of a Whitetail that you have studied,
fed, watched, and protected up until that point.

WHy layer?
The concept of layering originated in the
mountain athlete worlds of climbing,
backpacking and skiing. Its purpose
is to enable rapid adjustments in your
micro-climate based on activity level
and varying weather conditions. It is
the ideal concept for hunters who are
exposed from chilly pre-dawn hours
through well after sundown. There will
be times of high exertion during hiking
and climbing. There will be moments
of absolute stillness during glassing, on
stand or in the final stages of the stalk.
Rain or snow is a possibility. Wind is a
probability. Temperature fluctuations
of up to 50 degrees can occur as fronts
pass during a single day of hunting.

Q&A with the Best of the West
“The buck was doing the same thing for 4 straight days with the wind at his back
and I was convinced it was going to be the easiest big buck I would ever hunt.”
When did mule deer become an obsession?
Definitely, when I was ten years old on my first hunt with my dad. I was with
him when he shot a mid 170’s buck that I had missed earlier. Later on in the week
I shot my first buck. He was little forked horn, but I thought it was the biggest
buck in the world. I can still remember how excited my Dad and I were. I was
hooked on Mule deer hunting from that day on. Even to this day, a trophy mule
deer buck is the most challenging animal I have ever hunted.
What is the largest buck you ever seen that you didn’t get?
Both the biggest buck for archery and rifle that I saw, and didn’t get, were
last year. The archery buck was in Nevada. I had found and filmed him while
scouting and could hardly wait for the season to start. The buck was doing the
same thing for 4 straight days with the wind at his back and I was convinced it
was going to be the easiest big buck I would ever hunt. When the client (and
good friend of mine) showed up the evening before the hunt, he had the wrong
tag. It was for a different unit. We had to pick up camp and move to another unit
the next morning and never even got to hunt the buck. I won’t even tell you how
big he was, but, you win some and lose some.
The best rifle buck that got away was last year on my own personal AZ Strip tag.
I found the buck 18 days before the opener. He was everything I had dreamed of
shooting after a lifetime of applying for the unit. I couldn’t re-find him for almost
a week, but was finally able to get some video of him. I found him one last time
after six more days of looking one week before the hunt. That was the last time
I saw him. Five friends and I spent the next thirteen days looking and never saw
him again. I sure wish I knew what happened to that buck!
When and where was your most memorable hunt?
My personal hunt on The AZ Strip last year was definitely the most memorable.
I wiped my slate clean of all hunts three weeks before the opening day so I
could spend considerable time there scouting. My wife and my twin 5-year-old
daughters were able to come up and camp with me for a lot of the scouting.
My hunting partner Pat and I, had his brother and two of my closest friends to
help us for the entire hunt. It was a great time with great guys and we shot some
exceptional bucks. I’ll never forget that experience.- Greg Krogh, Mogollan Rim

PACKS
Whether it’s only a short hike to your
treestand, or 7 days in the backcountry,
we have a pack made for you. Our
pack-designing process begins with
a realistic conversation about what
size loads you are going to tackle with
the cubic volume that you are aiming
for. With that in mind, the suspension
system is engineered for such. A key
driver in each suspension system is
minimizing touch points with your back.
This keeps your back drier and you
more comfortable. After the suspension
is done, we begin a process that blends
form with function. Very aesthetic
lines paired with functional features
culminate in the Sitka line of packs.
Each pack is clean in design, moving
away from the trend of putting ten
times the pockets you need. Consistent

FABRIC
Fabric selection for every piece of gear we make, is arguably the most critical decision in the
process. We have partnered with some of the most respected and recognized textile firms in the
world to create fabrics that are exclusive to Sitka. We are also working with the highest quality
brands to develop textiles that are unique to Sitka . Every fabric is designed for a specific use, and
tested in the field for that use. As the ultimate performance of each piece is fine-tuned, textiles
are narrowed down and selected. The right fabric also ensures that the fitting stays consistent and
then each piece is designed to fit over and underneath each other in a layering fashion. We use
fabrics from partners like Gore, Polartec and Primaloft. All of them leaders.
DESIGN
Sitka products are designed to fit and move with the body, not against it. With this extended range-of-motion
you can move freely, shoot comfortably and accurately. A more form-fitting direction on our pieces, coupled with
articulated arms, legs, and seats ensures more efficiencies. Every product has it’s place in the layering system,
creating a unique system that now offers the flexibility to hunt around the world with one set of gear—adjusting
your layers as needed. Ultimately, this same layering system eliminates bulk and decreases overall weight, as each
piece is designed with the goal that it will be used as part of the Sitka layering system.
TECHNOLOGY
Every Sitka product utilizes technologies that have been developed by leading innovators in the textile and garment industries.
Some of these technologies enhance performance, others durability, or fit. Every one of these technologies is aimed at
enhancing your experience or increasing your success. Some of these key partners include: GORE® and it’s waterproof/
windproof/breathable technologies with GORE-TEX® and WINDSTOPPER®. OPTIFADE®, GORE’S new science based
concealment technology. Primaloft® and their superior insulative properties, and Ardica® Fuel Cell Technology—which
creates both heat and a portable power source. Leading factories ensure the tightest tape allowances, skiving of soft shell
fabrics, and technical builds reserved for the most stringent of customers. If there is a better technology that exists or needs to
be developed, we are always looking to incorporate it to make a better Sitka product.
sitka set out to reset people’s expectations. A straightforward mission statement with measurable
goals. in the process of building gear that was meant to create a paradigm shift, something
unexpected happened, people became the brand. a growing movement that is fully committed
to their passion at every level; committed to training, research, testing, gear. this is sitka. A
movement that embodies and embraces the best technologies and partners, the professional
