Cool nights. Majestic, splendid and stunning all paint the picture of Kentucky’s most impressive lakeside venue. I know words like majestic, splendid and stunning can read larger-than-life. But when it comes to describing one of Kentucky’s most impressive lakeside venues, those words can’t begin to paint an accurate portrait of Lake Cumberland. If you haven’t experienced the material or natural amenities of what’s been described as “a boating and fishing paradise,” here’s a glimpse of what’s in store. Lake Cumberland beckons outdoor lovers to its beautiful countryside and 1,255 miles of shoreline with 52 boat ramps and more than 5,400 slips at 9 marinas. This incredibly vast body of water spans 65,530 acres, stretches some 100 miles end-to-end, measures over a mile at its widest point and borders six counties. It mesmerizes with striking panoramas and attracts over four million visitors annually. There’s little room for doubt: The lake has emerged as a priceless tourism commodity that drives the economy of south-central Kentucky. hills paired with an endless span of blue waters that displayed just a small segment of the lake’s striking persona. What amazed me even more was its sheer quiet ambiance, which seemed to enhance the already enormous boundaries of the largest body of water east of the Mississippi. And while the “wow factor” of my initial boating adventure is vividly tucked in my memory archives, what I find special about cruising Lake Cumberland is that it welcomes you with a new experience every time you’re there. ABLAZE WITH VIBRANT COLORS I was sure my return would be even better for a couple of reasons: It had been several years since my last excursion, and I was getting the chance to see what an avid boater had told me during that summer trip: “You’ve gotta see this when the fall leaves set the lake ablaze with their vibrant colors.” My time to revisit Lake Cumberland was now. As a South Florida writer, I made my first visit to Lake Cumberland in the summer of 2008, enjoying a spectacular tour courtesy of State Dock President Bill Jasper aboard a newly designed $1 million houseboat. As we left the docks for a cruise, I was blown away by what I saw — an infinite stretch of rolling 4 1.888.STATE.DOCK www.statedock.com My second-time-around visit was highlighted by the fact that the lake’s water levels were back to full capacity for the first time since they were dropped back in 2007 to make repairs on the Wolf Creek Dam. This outing paired family and friends aboard a pontoon boat on a brisk autumn day — truly a time superbly crafted for cruising. As we powered across the lake, the natural beauty of the region came alive as the brilliant hues of autumn dressed the lush foliage along the high-bluffed banks in rich shades of golden yellow, burnt orange and deep burgundy. Add this plus factor into the mix: since the banks are protected by hills, windy conditions rarely pose a problem for Lake Cumberland boaters. We made a turn down Pumpkin Creek for a short ride and then headed back out. The lake’s smooth-as-glass surface afforded ideal cruising as we explored the many beautiful coves tucked along the shoreline and made our way over to Wolf Creek Dam, a mammoth concrete wall towering some 773 feet. We looked up and saw traffic making its way over the dam above us, deciding to include this direction in our drive back to Cave City. It was a great choice, as the trip across the dam afforded us with a bird’s eye perspective of Lake Cumberland. A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD The return-to-port course gave us a different view of fall’s colorful display, lending credence to the local sentiment of “a whole different world” as we passed along Guffey and Whippoorwill Creeks. Pulling into the slip, our eyes glanced back towards a sky streaked with pastel blues and pinks, indicating a chilly night ahead. Although the climb back up the steps to our car seemed to take much longer than our earlier walk down, it provided us with time to reflect on the day’s journey and share newly made memories. Don’t be fooled into thinking you’ve got to be a water-enthusiast to enjoy Lake Cumberland. It’s also home to a pair of wonderful state parks that provide an all-access pass to the lake’s landside beauty. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, nestled among 3,117 acres on the northern shore near Jamestown in Russell County, offers lodge accommodations at either Lure or Pumpkin Creek, camping facilities and dockage at State Dock Marina. An out-of-the-ordinary location — on an island in the middle of the Lake — gives General Burnside Island State Park a unique distinction as the state’s only island park. Named for Civil War Union General Ambrose E. Burnside and situated just south of Somerset in Pulaski County, its 430 acres affords camping, golf and lake access via a boat ramp on the island’s south end. Unfortunately, the afternoon sun had slipped into the horizon, leaving me little time to explore the parks and their natural treasures. I also had to pass on an educational experience, as my schedule didn’t allow a trip to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, constructed in 1975 to produce fish stocked in public waters within the state. It was ditto for the city of Somerset (on the lake’s northeastern edge) with the nearby Civil War battlefields of Mill Springs and Dutton’s Hill, where visitors step back in time with re-enactments of those historical battles. However, I can hear Kentucky calling me. And I’ve already started my list of places to see for my next trip to Lake Cumberland. Can’t wait! Some women might suggest a weekend at a spa or shopping on Rodeo Drive. For Lisa Merlo and her 12 friends, all from Algonac, Mich., a summer weekend turned into an adventure on the water, one they’ll be talking about for years to come. experience, and actually booked three houseboats for a large family gathering two years earlier. “We definitely over packed on that trip and had so much left over because we packed every- thing!” Eaves said. “The pictures are kind of funny with all that was packed that year.” Merlo has been to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky on a houseboat vacation three years running, and is an old pro at the process. In fact, she had earned a Captain’s Club membership with the State Dock Marina, giving her a 5 percent discount on the rental. This experience was shared with the Algonac group, and everyone worked hard to bring only what they truly needed. “Do not over pack the food,” Melanie Leuffgen, fellow traveler, shared. PLANNING It was agreed upon early that assignments for food and other supplies would be given to each participant, and allowances for personal items were accounted for. By the time everyone arrived at the dock, there were 13 carts full of supplies, plus coolers, to load onto the 78-foot behemoth, and with that kind of size, there was plenty of room for all. Marie Eaves, one of the vacationers, also had a previous houseboating 24 1.888.STATE.DOCK www.statedock.com With limited space in the refrigerator and cupboard storage for non-perish able goods, there will not be enough room for everyone to bring everything they could ever possibly need, but if planned well, no one need go hungry or without. Eaves added, “You need just enough to get through the amount of days on the boat without over packing.” Eaves suggested that since you’ll be in a bathing suit most of the time anyway, there’s no need to put together the perfect clothing ensemble for every day of the trip either. It’s all about kicking back and relaxing, with some great friends on an amazing houseboat while floating along in your own private world. In the end, the four-day weekend was all about having a great time and bonding. “Just being able to kick back and enjoy ourselves in our own private world was great,” Merlo said. Eaves commented that even with 13 people aboard, the boat felt wide open. “There is enough room on the boats that you don’t run into people and still have a great time,” she said. “We all loved how houseboating combines finding your own private corner of the globe with the feeling that you’re at a nice hotel.” One thing that is important to have is someone who can pilot the houseboat. This group had several women who could get the boat from place to place, which is good. But having prior houseboating experience is not required. With some instruction and experience, anyone can make a good houseboat captain. In fact, before you set out, an experienced captain at State Dock will give you a lesson on the operation of the boat. They drive everyone in and out of the marina, and while on the lake, all you need to do is ease into the bank and tie off. If you have any questions along the way, help is just a radio call away. COMFORT, SPACE AND LOADS OF LUXURIOUS AMENITIES In interviewing the women, one aspect of the vacation that came back time and time again was the amenities. Leuffgen gushed about all that was included on the boat. “Six bedrooms, two baths, two slides and a hot tub with a bar on the top deck!” she boasted. Add in the party top, and anyone could have a great time in those circumstances! The houseboat also included TV’s with DVD players in all the bedrooms, central air conditioning, GPS navigation unit, stove, microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer and a satellite tracking unit for access to satellite television anywhere. “I would absolutely recommend this type of trip for all ages,” Eaves said, “Why? Because it is a great way to be together, relax and just kick back doing what you want, when you want.” “I would absolutely recommend this type of trip for all ages. Why? Because it is a great way to be together, relax and just kick back doing what you ” want, when you want. MARIE EAVES Merlo also expressed her appreciation for this type of vacation. “It is by far the best vacation ever,” she said. “You can go with friends, family, or whoever. There is so much to do on the boat that you never get bored. Swimming, hot tub, slides, time to read or play cards, or do nothing at all, it is your choice.” “Your normal life just slowly escapes you,” Leuffgen added. For anyone interested in having a houseboat vacation at State Dock on Lake Cumberland, know you’ll be right at the heart of the world capital for houseboating, so you’re in good hands. KAY This love story started with a simple question between two old high school friends when Annie called Michelle and asked, “What would you think about being set up with Marty’s best friend’s dad?” Annie Konkus’s son, Marty, is best friends with Jackson Simon, who lived next door with his single dad, Mike. Annie had a feeling her next door neighbor might be the perfect fit for her friend Michelle, who was also a single parent raising two young boys. Annie put on her matchmaker hat and started showing each of them the other’s Facebook page, making sure to bring up hobbies and qualities both shared. With Annie on the job, it didn’t take long for both parties to agree to meet. In order to get things rolling, the two couples planned on doing a double date. “Annie gave Mike my number. He called and the rest is history,” says Michelle. “We didn’t even need to start with a double date because we had an instant connection.” SUNSET CRUISE Six months into their relationship, the couple traveled five hours south from their hometown of Columbus, Ohio, to Lake Cumberland, near Jamestown, Ky. Mike regularly traveled down to Lake Cumberland several times a year to visit friends and hang out at the lake. This time, he brought Michelle to introduce her to the houseboating lifestyle for the Lake Cumberland Thunder Run, an annual powerboat poker run. The couple stayed on a friend’s houseboat and during a sunset cruise, broached the subject of marriage for the first time. “The night was perfect with the sunset stretched out across the entire lake,” says Michelle. “That night on a houseboat we decided if we were ever going to get married this is how we would do it.” The following February, Mike got down on bended knee and asked Michelle if she was still willing to take a chance on the conversation they had eight months earlier. Of course, she readily agreed, and one year after meeting, the couple was officially engaged. PLANNING THE DAY The couple was completely serious about having a houseboat wedding. Looking forward to the upcoming boating season, 30 1.888.STATE.DOCK www.statedock.com they started brainstorming possible dates. The couples’ combined five kids had sport commitments, a family vacation to Maine scheduled for July, and the kids would need to be back to school by the end of August. They decided on a June wedding, which meant a short engagement filled with planning. You can imagine the bride’s dismay when she Googled, “catering near Jamestown” and the first entries were KFC and Taco Bell. Not excited by the thought of putting out buckets of greasy chicken for her guests on her big day, she reached out to Debbie Schumann and the team at State Dock. The couple previously arranged to rent two 90-foot houseboats from the Lake Cumberland marina and now needed some guidance on the resources available nearby. “Fortunately, Debbie led us in the right direction and we couldn’t have done half of what we did without her,” says Michelle. “She suggested a caterer who was able to do everything from the food to the cake, to the linens and flowers.” With Debbie’s help, all that remained was to hire a photographer. THE BIG DAY The plan was to marry at sunset on Lake Cumberland on the top deck of a houseboat and it went off without a hitch. The two boats departed at dusk to the middle of the lake where the boats were then tied together so everyone could witness the nuptials. Michelle had her hair done and got dressed on shore, but she didn’t want to miss the party while cruising out. So she threw on her shorts and tank top and mingled with friends and family on the cruise out to the lake. Right before the ceremony, she donned her wedding dress and joined her man in front of their 85 guests. They said their vows as the sun set over Lake Cumberland. Their kids, Michael, 17; Emily, 13; Jackson, 11; Trace, 9; and Tanner, 7, enjoyed front row seats for the event. The caterer set up cocktail tables for guests to stand around during the ceremony. The bride’s concerns that people would not be able to see were quickly laid to rest with everyone agreeing it was one of the best weddings they had ever attended. DESTINATION WEDDING A destination wedding on a houseboat was exactly what Mike and Michelle had in mind and, luckily, their respective families were able to partake in the fun. The group of 40 spent Thursday through Sunday hanging out on the boats as they prepared for the big event. “Our wedding was more than a ceremony; our extended families got a vacation out of it,” says Michelle. “Mike’s parents kept telling us that having their entire family—kids and grandkids— on a four- day vacation was the most special thing.” “All the boaters appreciated not having to leave the lake for the weekend,” laughs Michelle. “As you know, boaters don’t like to leave the lake for much of anything during boating season.” Original story printed in the July/August 2014 edition of Houseboat Magazine. Absolutely amazing houseboat vacations 33 A revamped two-day event with no official start time may be the ticket to more people enjoying this longstanding event. From the sound of things (I wasn’t there), the revamped two-day Lake Cumberland Poker Run—featuring no official start—went smoothly and made the longstanding event more enjoyable for many who joined the fun over the weekend. With nine marinas along Lake Cumberland handing out cards on Friday and Saturday this year, boaters needed to make it to at least five of the stops to participate in Saturday night’s poker run draw at State Dock, the event’s host location. So without a drivers’ meeting or a shotgun start on Saturday morning, the event morphed into a more casual affair with boaters using much of their time to raft-up, hang out and take in the sights and sounds from the beautiful 76 Falls to the legendary party cove at the Harmon Creek section of the lake. According to Joe Schaldenbrand, one of the owners of Sunsation Powerboats who has attended the event many times, the poker run was more relaxed this year. Louisiana’s Nate Michel did the poker run in his Outerlimits V-bottom Remote Access and had a great time. 34 1.888.STATE.DOCK www.statedock.com “I think I enjoyed the run this year more than I have any other year,” said Schaldenbrand, who rented a houseboat for the weekend right across from the entertainment stage at State Dock. “On Saturday, we told a dozen or so Sunsation customers that we’d meet at the falls so we all migrated down to 76 Falls, rafted off for a bit then we went to party cove and just hung out for the day. It was cool to see a pack of Sunsations together. In fact, every model we build was there—we had a 28, 32, 36, 43 and our 29 and 34 center consoles. That’s never happened before so that was pretty neat.” “I think a lot of friendships were made, too,” he continued. “Everybody really gets to know one another when you raft up with like-minded boaters. From a marketing standpoint, the overall exposure was better. Everything was just more relaxed—you never felt like you had to hurry up and get anywhere, which was nice.” Enjoying the company of friends was exactly what Kentucky performance boater Mike Thornton did throughout the long weekend. Thornton, who owns the 388 Skater Powerboats catamaran Frisky Business, was part of a group that had a dedicated houseboat just for party cove. “I was impressed with the caliber of boats this year,” said Thornton, who would love to see a top-speed shootout added to the event and encourages anyone who would participate to contact Bill Jasper and the organizers at State Dock. “There were boats like mine and Bill’s that like big speeds and guys in 22-foot Baja sportboats and everything in between. I wasn’t sure how the format change would work, and although we lost the big spectator gathering for the start, everyone had a great time. The dock parties were fantastic and of course Harmon Creek was Harmon Creek.” Story by Jason Johnson, originally published on OffShoreOnly.com 2015 POKER RUN DETAILS • Over 150 of the country’s meanest and fastest powerboats • Enjoy the fun and energy of a Mardi-Gras atmosphere • Ranked in the TOP 10 by Extreme Boats Magazine • 130 Mile Course through beautiful Lake Cumberland •Each boat entered must make four marina stops in addition to State Dock to make up their poker hand. A new houseboating company has been established, it’s time for celebration. But this company isn’t entirely new; it’s a merger of powerful forces in the houseboating community. Thoroughbred Houseboats and Stardust Cruisers have formed Trifecta Ventures, which is a joint venture consolidating the manufacture of the three premier houseboat brands. Stardust Cruisers, Sumerset Houseboats and Thoroughbred Houseboats will now be built in an expanded manufacturing facility located in Monticello, Ky. Each brand will keep its own identity, but will be able to pull their power in the industry together. Jerry Harden will head up the company as the president. 36 1.888.STATE.DOCK WHY NOW? The reason behind this merger is to lower overall cost of manufacturing by consolidating purchasing, manufacturing, service and delivery. Unlike previous economic downturns, these companies have seen the cost of raw materials and manufactured goods used in the construction of houseboats continue to rise instead of adjusting to our current economy. These rising costs make building boats more expensive which is frustrating not only to the buyer, but to the manufacturers as well. What does this merger mean for you as the consumer? This consolidation of manufacturing under the Trifecta Ventures umbrella has already reduced input costs and will continue to optimize the manufacturing process. This creates a better product at the best possible price for the houseboat customer, which is good news for all of us, no matter your income level. www.statedock.com USED HOUSEBOAT BUYERS REJOICE TRIFECTA VENTURES, LLC Even if you think this doesn’t apply to you because you only buy used, it does. Emily Cannell has been living in Japan for the last two years for her husband’s job. Last summer she came over to the states with her two kids to visit family. While she was with her sister Dannette Cook and all the kids, they decided last-minute to be adventurous and rent a houseboat without the husbands. Dannette and her family live in Somerset, Ky., and have rented houseboats every summer for the past seven years. When Dannette told Emily about houseboating, Emily thought it was this crazy thing only people in Kentucky do. 40 1.888.STATE.DOCK “I didn’t find out until I wrote a blog just how popular it really is, “Emily laughs. Last summer was Emily’s first experience on a houseboat. They rented the boat from State Dock on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and they chose the boat based on size and amenities. “We needed enough beds for everyone and of course a slide and a hot tub. We also like a large upper deck for sitting around in the evening when the sun goes down,” says Emily. So the two sisters with four kids to entertain decided to hoist the sails and throw them all on an 72-foot houseboat with a hot tub, slide, diving board and four bedrooms. Dannette and Emily didn’t give much thought to the consequences of the houseboating idea, as this was all decided over a glass of wine. The hooligans were causing way too much noise and commotion in the background, so it made it hard for the moms to think straight. www.statedock.com The idea of a floating playground for kids and mothers, all of whom were now completely wild after two months off from school, seemed flawless. Sign Here The rental process at Lake Cumberland didn’t seem to involve too many qualifications, so Dannette and Emily reasoned that the houseboats must be a solid design. Emily decided that Dannette was the obvious choice for captain. So with a hearty “aye-aye Cap`n,” Emily proceeded to the fly bridge to fire up the hot tub and prepare for the wild excursion. “Operating the hot tub would have been so much easier if Dannette was driving in a straight line,” says Emily. “She immediately drove the boat in a circle, causing half the water to slosh out of the hot tub and another turn emptied it.” Clearly she needed help as Emily demonstrated her captain’s skills by driving in two perfect circles at full throttle before handing the wheel back to her sister. OPEN WATERS After 30 minutes of trying to get out of the marina, Dannette finally got the boat pointed toward the main body of Lake Cumberland, and they were on their way. Driving in a straight line was a technique neither of the moms mastered. The hooligans mistakenly thought they had input rights and started harassing their moms. One hassled Dannette to drive, one lectured Emily to re-fill the hot tub, one begged to pull over now, and the fourth lectured them on how to properly drive the boat. Emily considered earplugs while watching Dannette snake her way down the lake. They moved in a semiforward motion like a sidewinder rattlesnake. When they thought they were finally settled, Dannette dove into the lake with a rope with the objective to tie the huge boat to a tree. After 10 -15 failed attempts, Dannette moved to the second rope on the opposite side of the boat. A successful tie-down occurred at the expense of the first rope, which promptly came untied. After Dannette swam in circles around the boat for two hours they realized the cove was too wide to tie up the boat. Emily took over and backed the boat out of the cove and into the main body and found a better spot. As soon as the boat was tied up and secure, the sisters opened up the slide so their young-ins could get playing. Once the slide wore the butts out of the kids’ bathing suits, they were ready for a new form of entertainment. “Dannette announced that she found a geode during her tying excursions on the bank and challenged the kids to go find some,” recalls Emily. The kids hopped off the boat and were focused on finding the best rock.” After that wore off, Dannette and Emily employed a few of their ‘mother techniques for submission.’ Understanding “Monkey See, Monkey Do,” Dannette and Emily entered the hot tub. Not long after, the hooligans came running over, jumping in and filling the hot tub with water guns, toys, floats and anything else you can think of. QUIET TIME After dinner, the aunts couldn’t wait to tuck the kids into the bunk beds and have some alone time. The kids luckily were too exhausted to be scared or beg for another glass of water, so the sisters were set free—at least for the night. Their few final moments of that day were spent enjoying the sunset and contemplating new ways of wearing down the children. After two entertaining but exhausting days, they made their way back to the marina, allowing each kid to drive the boat for a stretch. They circled and zigzagged their way back, where everyone gave them lots of room to dock. Emily and Dannette are currently planning to head back to Lake Cumberland next summer with their other sister Claire and her two kids. Emily fell in love with houseboating and plans to make it a traditional summer activity. 2014 State Dock Guest Photos.
