Cotinus ‟Flame‟
Flame Smoke Bush
One of the best shrubs for “...its dazzling
autumn colour” writes G.S. Thomas in
his seminal book “Ornamental Shrubs,
Climbers and Bamboos”. C. „Flame‟ has
been given the Award of Garden Merit
by the Royal Horticultural Society. It
makes a deciduous shrub or small tree
growing 4metres tall by as much across.
The blue-green leaves turn orange and
red during late autumn. The flower
panicles are pinkish purple.

Velvet Cloak Smoke Bush
This is one of the best forms of purple
leaved Cotinus, its deep purple leaf
colour sparkles right through the
season. The huge purple-pink flower
heads are very handsome. It grows
about 4 metres tall by as much across
but can be cut hard back in the late
winter to keep its size in check. In our
borders we cut it down to a metre each
year. Like all of its tribe it is a tough sun
loving plant which needs very little extra
irrigation when established.

A new release and something quite
different as this dwarf Dutch selection is
grown as much for its precocious
flowering, with each shoot carrying a
frothy smokey pink flower head, as for
its brilliant autumn colour. It is reputed to
grow a mere 1.5 metres tall by as much
across but as we have only grown it for
a year it is too soon to be definite.

Salvia nemorosa garden image
Salvia nemorosa and its close allies
I grow about twenty different named clones of this most beautiful and useful group
of salvias. Except for a couple of my own seedlings and one plant generously given
to me by the Geelong botanic gardens all the cultivars I grow are from imported
stock and reproduced by cuttings. Besides growing them in the garden I also have
them in permanent stock beds. At Lambley, where temperatures range from -8C up
to 47C, they get by on very little extra irrigation and are soundly frost hardy. They
flower well during the most torrid summer days.
The Salvia nemorosa group is more important in our garden than any other group
of plants. They are very easy to manage. When the first flush of flowers is finished,
generally around Christmas but earlier with some clones, we get out the hedge
shears and cut the plants to the ground. They soon send up fresh young shoots
and start flowering again a month or so afterwards so that we get 20 weeks of
flowers a year. I cut them to the ground again in late autumn.
