Activity Resource Center (ARC) September Newsletter Happy September! I hope you got the year off to a great start! For those of you who are new to Orange County Public Schools, the Activity Resource Center or “ARC” is a wonderful place to come for professional learning or to create materials for your classroom. Each course includes a „Make and Take‟ portion so materials are classroom -ready the next day. The course offerings for September and October are included in this newsletter. The ARC will be open for general use at different times each month. Those dates and times will come out with the monthly schedule. The ARC will be open until 5:30 one or two Wednesdays a month. While there are many ideas on display, many teachers come with a plan for the day. ARC Activities are self-directed so you can create what best meets the instructional needs of your students. Wishing you well, Vicky Hepler, ARC Resource Teacher 407-317-3523 [email protected] Please see the attached a set of daily routine cards. Putting the daily routine in pictures helps children transition from one activity to another with less loss of instructional time! Keeping Them Engaged … Have on hand quick activities that pull students out of their chairs, increase their alertness and blood circulation, and add some fun to the day. These short brain breaks (five minutes or less) help them consolidate new learning so they can remember it later. Instant Replay: This game heightens visual and auditory acuity by requiring participants to pay attention to details. In pairs, learners take turns acting out an idea (for five seconds) and mimicking (from memory) their partner‟s gestures. Add subject matter content to make it academically valuable. Taken from “Brain Compatible Strategies” by Erin Jensen Did you know that the ARC has over 500 die-cuts: large, standard size and tiny? These can be used to create literacy centers, math centers or concept boards. General Use for September 9/14 1:30-5:30 (Late Hours) 9/28 1:30-5:30 (Late Hours) FYI: Points are no longer awarded for General Use at the ARC Beach Ball Bonanza Use the prompts on the following page to develop oral language and create a classroom community. Print the prompts on cardstock, cut and laminate. Then attach one Velcro dot to each section on the ball. Then place the other dot on the question cards. Choose the questions you want to put on the ball. To do the activity, have children toss the ball to a classmate who answers the question their right thumb lands on. You can reuse the same ball by programming cards with spelling words, vocabulary words, multiplication facts or comprehension questions. This activity is a great way to get everyone involved because you never know when the ball is heading your way. The OCPS Early Childhood Team is committed to supporting an intense focus on student achievement in all areas through developmentally appropriate practices and child-responsive instruction.
