Tournament Corner Frank was an avid Lake Michigan Fisherman and charter captain pictured with our own, Don Dubin below. We held our first Club Tournament of the year, because the first scheduled tournament was cancelled due to weather, on May 21st and the weather was perfect. 1-2 foot waves and no bugs, can't beat it. The target fish for this event was Coho Salmon and the members sure caught a lot of them, 170 to be exact, with 199 fish coming to the scales from the 21 boats that entered. Good going ladies and gentleman. 1st Place - Time Off, Captain Doug McCallister, 53.8 LBS with a Grand Slam I wanted to take the chance to give our members a 243.8 Pts $105 chance to take a look at a website that Frank's family put together to list the fishing gear that they 2nd Place - Doctor's Orders, Captain Jim Maechtle, 56.4 LBS, 206.4 Pts $52.50 have left from when their father passed on 2 yrs ago. Take a look at the link below: www.FranksFishing.net Because Frank's daughters live in Colorado, that is currently where the gear is located. But I spoke with one of Frank's daughters the other night and was told that larger items like downriggers might be able to be driven back into the area if purchased, since they still have family in the Chicago area. If there is something you see in the broader pictures that you might like to have a better shot at, shoot them an email (address on the site, under "contact us" tab) and put a request in. 2nd Place - Grey Lion, Captain Jim Nelligan, 71.4 LBS, 206.4 Pts $52.50 That's right folks, we had a tie for 2nd. Maechtle Decorating, Advanced Automotive and Duck Bill Charters. Lake Michigan, A Changing Fishery By Hall of Famer Don Dubin The coho and chinook salmon were stocked in Lake Michigan, to control the alewife population, and it created a world class sport fishery. The zebra and quagga mussels were introduced into the Great Lakes by the shipping industry’s dumping of ballast water. This has had a negative effect on the Lake Michigan fishery. The Lake is no longer able to maintain the salmon population that it had in the past. The mussels are consuming the plankton which all young fish need to exist. The lack of food especially hurts the alewife population which lives in the open waters of the lake, and are the main forage for the salmon population. In the past, the fish hatcheries were able to supply the right amount of salmon to maintain a healthy predator, prey relationship. Today, all of the juvenile chinook that are stocked in Lake Michigan are marked with a coded-wire tag and the adipose fin is clipped. This study has shown that over 50% of the chinook salmon are reproducing naturally in the streams of Michigan and Lake Huron. In order to make sure the alewife population does not collapse, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission has adopted a strategy to cut the stocking of chinook by 50% and to bring the number of predators in line with the available forage. This reduction has impacted the salmon fishery because the wild salmon leave the southern part of the lake as adults, and go back to the rivers that they came from, and this, results in a poor harvest of salmon. The lake trout population is doing very well and many of the boat fisherman are targeting the lake trout which fills in for the shortage of salmon. The harvest of yellow perch hit a record low in 2015, however, the samplings by the DNR shows that the young of the year perch hit a record high. This is encouraging, however, will there be enough food for these young fish to survive and grow to a size that brings back the perch fishery that we enjoyed in the past? On the positive side, the round goby is another invasive species that was also introduced into the Great Lakes. The gobies are able to consume the mussels, and the population has skyrocketed, and are now providing a food source for a diverse variety of predators. Because the gobies inhabit the bottom and nearshore areas of the lake, the lake trout, steelhead, and brown trout are coming in close to shore to feed, and are providing great fishing in the harbors and along the concrete break-walls. The shore fisherman are catching gobies, and using them for bait. The gobies are very aggressive, and can be easily caught by fishing on the bottom using a small piece of a worm. Another species that is now being caught by the shore fisherman are whitefish, and the bait that they are using are goby heads fished on the bottom. The mussels have made the Lake much clearer, which promotes more weed growth. The population of warm water species such as smallmouth bass, northern pike, and even muskies could expand and we might have both a warm-water and cold-water fishery in the future. Our Lake Michigan fishery is definitely changing. 6- Hour On-Water Fishing Seminar Join Captain Mike Fuys on Manipulator, a 31 Tiara charter and tournament boat, for a hands-on learning experience.
