Thank you for accepting the following resume and portfolio, submitted for consideration for position openings for Education / Culture Practice Area Directors, Design Directors, Senior Project Designers, Planners or Managers, and Research Leaders. I am happy to provide additional information and look forward to beginning a conversation about the possibilities. Sincerely, Nina Murrell Thank you for your interest! Nina Murrell, AIA, LEED AP 512.569.9665 [email protected] What kind of dog are you? After one of the project coordination meetings for the Georgia Museum of Art, Nina’s team decided to figure out what kind of dog each of the teammates most emulated. The surly graphic designer was declared a Bull Dog, and the enthusiastic intern a Jack Russell Terrier. A Weimeraner and Poodle rounded out the pack. Nina’s team described her as a German Shepherd - steady, attentive, capable, smart - the kind of dog that you can line up behind and trust to lead you past potential catastophe to safety. This was a role she played as Project Manager, as she carefully shepherded a host of complicated client concerns and envelope design issues to completion while steadily cultivating strong relationships among the university architects, museum respresentatives, contractor and consultants. Biography Tripartite experience teaching architectural design, running her own small design firm and expanding fledgling education and culture practice areas for two firms taught her to value client relationships and proved a valuable foundation for her current Gensler roles as Design Director, Regional Education and Culture Practice Area Leader, and Culture Research Leader. She is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker and facilitator, fosters young talent towards authorship in design and research and rallies teams in productivity and profitability on long-term initiatives and projects. She actively builds trust among stakeholders through calm perseverance; past clients have praised her conscientious attention to detail, listening skills and advocacy for their design interests. With integrated experience as Project Designer, Manager and Architect, she has successfully juggled concurrent jobs with multidisciplinary teams of up to 10 people for projects as small as phased pediatric interior upfits and as large as a 210k sf new residence hall. She capably integrates and advances workflows of multiple disciplines including architecture; interior design, environmental graphic design, and print graphic design in addition to consultant disciplines. A balanced strategic thinker, she is both creative and analytical, and loves to create visuals that provide immediate enlightenment on complex concepts. Holding the big picture while parsing prolific details in fast-paced communication-intensive environments, she very much enjoys working in teams to achieve innovation and greatness. Nina L. Required analysis of existing building functions and standard HISD program to find efficiency opportunities, as the existing building conditions were not conducive to meeting standard requirements. 2007 Bond work was in construction during design; 2012 Bond work is now in construction. Calm and thoughtful leadership of the design process and project meetings cultivated a functional team relationship among stakeholders who were initially disillusioned and combative from a prior Bond project that was in litigation due to Contractor default. Widely divergent design desires among stakeholders were balanced to find a design solution compatible with the mid-century modern curtainwall language of the existing building and the Principal’s desire for classical arches and stacked masonry walls. after before Nina L. Design included new exterior facade and site improvements, plus extensive interior renovation of lobby, prefunction spaces and gallery entries. Site issues included vehicular access to site, drop-off and parking garage connections and landscape design that closely reflected the design for the new facade. Design was inspired by the phoenix rising from the ashes, an allegory close to the heart and history of the city of Atlanta. The flight of the phoenix begins at the lowest portion of the large site; the movement of the wings is captured in parametric ceiling panel shapes that gradually rise through the Grand Hall to fly over the new glass entry. rendering depicts renovated main entry and restaurant in foreground and existing building Nina L.
