What kind of dog are you?
After one of the project coordination meetings for the Georgia Museum of Art, Nina’s team decided to figure out
what kind of dog each of the teammates most emulated. The surly graphic designer was declared a Bull Dog,
and the enthusiastic intern a Jack Russell Terrier. A Weimeraner and Poodle rounded out the pack. Nina’s
team described her as a German Shepherd - steady, attentive, capable, smart - the kind of dog that you
can line up behind and trust to lead you past potential catastophe to safety. This was a role she played
as Project Manager, as she carefully shepherded a host of complicated client concerns and envelope design
issues to completion while steadily cultivating strong relationships among the university architects, museum
respresentatives, contractor and consultants.
Biography
Tripartite experience teaching architectural design, running her own
small design firm and expanding fledgling education and culture
practice areas for two firms taught her to value client relationships
and proved a valuable foundation for her current Gensler roles as
Design Director, Regional Education and Culture Practice Area
Leader, and Culture Research Leader.
She is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker and facilitator, fosters
young talent towards authorship in design and research and rallies
teams in productivity and profitability on long-term initiatives and
projects. She actively builds trust among stakeholders through calm
perseverance; past clients have praised her conscientious attention
to detail, listening skills and advocacy for their design interests.
With integrated experience as Project Designer, Manager and
Architect, she has successfully juggled concurrent jobs with multidisciplinary teams of up to 10 people for projects as small as phased
pediatric interior upfits and as large as a 210k sf new residence
hall. She capably integrates and advances workflows of multiple
disciplines including architecture; interior design, environmental
graphic design, and print graphic design in addition to consultant
disciplines.
A balanced strategic thinker, she is both creative and analytical,
and loves to create visuals that provide immediate enlightenment
on complex concepts. Holding the big picture while parsing prolific
details in fast-paced communication-intensive environments, she
very much enjoys working in teams to achieve innovation and
greatness.

Renovations and Expansion
Houston, Texas
Project Designer | Gensler
$21.6 million construction budget for 250,000sf includes creation of a
new main entry identity, expansion of Athletics, Performing Arts and
Science Labs, and unification of interiors through design of finishes
and wayfinding for this double phase project. Required analysis
of existing building functions and standard HISD program to find
efficiency opportunities, as the existing building conditions were not
conducive to meeting standard requirements. 2007 Bond work was
in construction during design; 2012 Bond work is now in construction.
Calm and thoughtful leadership of the design process and
project meetings cultivated a functional team relationship among
stakeholders who were initially disillusioned and combative from a
prior Bond project that was in litigation due to Contractor default.
Widely divergent design desires among stakeholders were balanced
to find a design solution compatible with the mid-century modern
curtainwall language of the existing building and the Principal’s desire
for classical arches and stacked masonry walls.

FY2015 Firmwide Research Grant
Lead Researcher | Gensler
Originated idea, identified leadership team, and wrote proposal
that won a $10,000 grant to explore how museums are innovatively
engaging audiences to create excitement, relevance and
sustainability and how these evolutions are changing the role of
museums in their cities and communities. Rallied regional research
leaders in 9 Gensler offices to host a series of roundtables to gather
qualitative data, which was published as an interim report and used
to create a survey to quantify trends. Final report completed in March
2015. Wrote two follow-on research projects submitted for FY2016
funding consideration:

$3.5 million construction budget. Identified lead, cultivated
relationship, successfully bid. Designed new 10,000sf art museum
facility located on university campus. Envisioned as a regional arts
attractor, building was designed to act as a portal to the existing
campus Arts District through the adjacent Bailey Performing Arts
Center. Formal composition of the building mediated significant
grade changes of the site while attracting and enhancing pedestrian
passage through a light-filled lobby and sculpture pavilion that also
provided access to the new black-box gallery and storage areas.
Program included lobby and prefunction spaces, galleries, collection
storage with loading dock and preparation areas, museum store,
classrooms, print collection storage and study room. Site planning
issues included addressing campus entry paths, pedestrian and
vehicular passages (and parking), routing of campus utilities and the
presence of below-grade rock, and retention of critical landscape
features. Project is LEED certified equivalent.

Highly collaborative design team submitted one phase of design
and was shortlisted and submitted a second phase of design
for presentation. Design included new exterior facade and site
improvements, plus extensive interior renovation of lobby, prefunction
spaces and gallery entries. Site issues included vehicular access to
site, drop-off and parking garage connections and landscape design
that closely reflected the design for the new facade.
Design was inspired by the phoenix rising from the ashes, an allegory
close to the heart and history of the city of Atlanta. The flight of the
phoenix begins at the lowest portion of the large site; the movement
of the wings is captured in parametric ceiling panel shapes that
gradually rise through the Grand Hall to fly over the new glass entry.
