Workshops and
Speaking Engagements by
Gary Cangemi
Pro-Life Cartoonist
Introduction: A Star is Unborn-How Umbert Was Conceived
Gary tells the story of his struggles as a political cartoonist and writer, and how God inspired him
to focus his creative abilities in a positive direction, giving “unbirth” to the world’s first syndicated
prenatal comic strip.
The Umbert Cartoons
Gary Cangemi is taking his cartoon creation,
Umbert the Unborn , on the road for presentation
to groups and organizations interested in pro-life
issues. Now in its tenth year of nationwide publication, Umbert is winning hearts and minds across
the country with his gentle humor and message of
hope for unborn children.
Gary is available to present his workshop by itself
or as part of your next conference, convention, or
seminar. The program is designed to run for 90
minutes, however, it can be adapted to run longer
or shorter as your needs require. Gary has also
adapted his presentation to both adult and youth
participants.
Looking for a dinner or prayer breakfast speaker?
Gary has been speaking around the country at
pro-life events, including many keynote addresses.
Gary speaks about “creative courage” in finding
new ways to express the pro-life message. Using
his Umbert cartoons as a backdrop, he demonstrates how humor can change the way people
think about serious issues in the struggle to rebuild
a culture of life in America. Definitely not your
typical pro-life speaker, Gary inspires and entertains with a message that comes straight from the
heart.
Gary presents a selection of Umbert’s best, most thought-provoking cartoons, many of which
deal with current pro-life issues and current events. These are shown in a colorful Power Point
presentation with commentary by the artist.
Creative Session: Let’s Write an Umbert cartoon!
Gary leads the participants in the creation of a new Umbert cartoon which will appear in a future
edition of Umbert’s weekly syndicated strip, with credit given to the participating group. Using a
drawing pad and easel, Gary will jot down ideas from the audience, then help them select a topic
for the cartoon. Next, he will dermonstrate how to turn the idea into a four-panel comic strip and
involve the audience in developing the rough layout.
Unleash Your Creative Power!
Having worked the group into a creative frame of mind, Gary will then offer inspiration and
suggestions on how each participant can use his or her own creative gifts to promote a “Culture
of Life” in their respective communities.
Unborn Babies in Jeopardy, the Game Show
Time permitting, Gary will include another audience participation activity, a game of “Unborn Babies
in Jeopardy,” Umbert’s favorite game show, taken right from the comic strip. Participants will test their
pro-life knowledge with questions designed to reinforce important facts and issues concerning fetal
development, the pro-life movement, and the abortion debate.
Sing Along With Umbert
Gary will end the session with the newest part of the program, an audience“sing-a-long” of Umbert’s
pro-life parody songs, putting pro-life words to some popular American tunes like When Unborn Eyes
are Smiling, 76 Pro-Lifers Led the March for Life, Yankee Doodle Baby and more!
Equipment Required: A digital projector (or two depending on audience size) with VGA hookup at the podium and sound
system, projection screen(s), easel, large blank tablet, and black marker. Gary will have his own portable laptop, but a backup
laptop PC on hand is recommended in case of equipment failure.
