Getting ready
for a new year
Matthew Rowlatt, Chairman
Welcome to the December edition – I hope you’re
looking forward to the Christmas break. It seems
the days of enjoying a pleasant run-up to Christmas
– catching up with clients and suppliers – are long
gone. Now, everything seems to ramp up in order
to ensure all is in place for the New Year. With the
Guild, it’s no different – we’ve been setting the
budget, and agreeing agendas for 2016 as we look
towards our 60th anniversary year. It was therefore
a fitting end to the year to spend a pleasant evening
hearing our president (el Prez), Kevin Clancy,
making his address; thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Many of you will have attended Branch dinners
and I hope you’ve enjoyed them. I’ve certainly
enjoyed the privilege of being invited by the Branch
chairs to provide updates on the Guild’s activities.
Much of what we’re doing is responding to industry
changes and ensuring we facilitate the sharing of
technical knowledge and the development of
networks. I’m also pleased to have secured plans
for offering the University Bursary, the Guild
annual seminar (helping to provide our young
professionals with a forum to interact with
established members), and a new Technical Awards
luncheon to be held on the same day as our AGM.
I also hope you take time to enjoy the young
professionals’ articles in this issue, and continue to
support their involvement. That just
leaves me to wish you, your friends,
colleagues and family a peaceful
and pleasant Christmas.
See you in 2016.
Best Wishes

MUS will look into using Project
Tango for 3D scanning to

and volumes more accurately,
rather than using estimates
based on length, width and
depth measurements.
MUS designers will be able to
utilise 3D scanning to improve
efficiency in planning and
design, as well as to improve
communication of design plans.
There is also a health and safety
benefit – scanning can remove
the need to enter risky areas.
Andy Carter, director of

The technology, known in the
UK as Cycle Safety Shield, has
been developed by Safety Shield
Systems using technology
created by Israeli firm Mobileye.
It incorporates multi-vision
sensors, which monitor blind
spots, and alerts drivers as the
risk of a collision increases.
When the roll-out is complete,
Amey will have around 200
vehicles equipped with this
advanced technology.
At a glance:
n Cycle Safety Shield uses multivision sensors, which monitor
blind spots around the vehicle.
n Drivers receive real-time visual
and audible alerts as the risk
of a collision increases.

‘We’re the heart of the Guild’
To introduce a section
packed with YP activity,
chair Rachel Taylor talks
about the network’s latest
events and innovations
The past few months have
been a buzz of activity. The
Northern Branch ran its inaugural
training day, and the Wales and
Western Branch’s training day
sold out in no time! Meanwhile,
the National Panel and I have
written some guidance for the
presentation competition, so
each Branch runs the competition
in the same way. This will make
it easier to judge competitors in
the National Final.
The Branch finals consist of a
250-word synopsis and 15-minute
presentation. At the national
final, the pressure is really on, as
entrants only have five minutes
and two slides to get their point
across in a soapbox-style event.
Following these guidelines, the
Eastern, Wales and Western, and
Scottish Branches held three very
successful competitions.
They were record-breaking,
too, with the Scottish Branch
achieving the highest-ever
number of entrants, and Wales
and Western breaking their
audience record with 42 people
attending. (See more on this
in the YPN reports below.)
Upcoming events
The YPN is going from strength to
strength and I can only encourage
YPs to get involved and for their
managers to support them. The
network sits at the heart of the
Guild with the aim of engaging
and inspiring the next generation
to take over this industry. We
have an up-and-coming training
day on project management in
the Eastern Branch on 29 January
at The Marriott Peterborough,
and Midlands and South East
presentation competitions
coming up in January and March
respectively. Please contact me at
[email protected] or
your local Branch Chair for more
details on how to get involved.
SCOTTISH BRANCH
Record turn out
The Scottish Branch enjoyed its biggest entry ever
for this year’s Carron Trophy
On 18 November, the Scottish
Branch hosted the final of the
Carron Trophy. There were a
record 20 applicants and
judges spent considerable time
deliberating on who should
make the shortlist of five final
competitors. They were: Gosia
Dolata, WRc plc; Louis Salisbur,
University of the West of
England; Jennifer Briddon,
Tracerco; Junkan Wang, DNV GL;
and Oonagh Keenan, Farrans
Construction Ltd.

Judges, finalists and guests met
at the Radisson Blu Hotel right in
the heart of Edinburgh, a stone’s
throw away from the esplanades
of the famous castle. Finalists
delivered their presentations
and responded well to questions
from the panel and audience,
after which everyone enjoyed
hog ’n’ hops.
This year’s winner was
announced as Oonagh Keenan
for her talk on Barrow Outfall.
Oonagh was presented with the
coveted trophy and £500 prize
money by honorary lifetime
member, Bob Boyd. She will now
present at the national final,
which will be held in June 2016.
The Scottish Branch would
like to thank: all participants
for taking the time to submit
their synopses; the finalists
for their attendance and
presentation delivery; the
judges; the Radisson Blu; and
event sponsors Techfolio, DNV

Water industry paper wins Wales & Western YP presentation competition
It was another successful
year for the Wales & Western
YP presentation competition.
With 13 entrants from nine
companies, all of a fantastic
standard, it was hard to narrow
it down to the final five: Jamie
Kwiatkowski, Balfour Beatty;
Sophie McPhillips, Atkins;
Richard Standerwick, Wessex
Water; James Williams, WRC;
and Kate Silby, Wessex Water.
Winning ways
Results were announced on
4 December. Sophie won with her
presentation Driving Innovation
in the Water Industry; James
came runner-up with
PipeDiver Assessing the
Highland Flows. Sophie will
take part at the national
competition in June 2016.
All entrants were praised
for their high standard and
enthusiasm. The competition
will run again in autumn 2016.

Wales & Western YP members discovered the secrets of work communication
On 4 December, 24 YPs
attended the Wales & Western
YP committee training day at
the Grand Hotel in Bristol. Titled
‘The Antecedents to Negotiation’,
the event was led by Yvonne
Bennett, group head of culture
and development at J Murphy.
Attendees spent the morning
examining communication –

both sub-conscious and
conscious – before spending
the afternoon reviewing their
character traits at work and
under pressure. The day
culminated in a look at how
best to understand others
when negotiating. This focused
on people’s visual, audio and
kinaesthetic tendencies, with
Yvonne discovering her
first ‘gustatory’ person
(someone who expresses
themselves via taste!).
The day was a massive
success, with many YPs
commenting on how much
they took from the session
and remarking how it could
be applied to their roles.
Opening presentations from
Gary Clish, Calm Solutions, and
Peter Atkins, National Grid,
included personal experiences
and top tips, giving a flavour of
what to expect from the session.
During the afternoon, the YPs
tackled various situations from
redundancy, performance,
banter and social media policies.
The group then attended the
Northern Branch dinner in the
evening, which was held at The
Midland Hotel. This gave them
the chance to use their newly
acquired networking skills with
fellow P.I.G. colleagues!

2015: a year in review
The Northern Branch Dinner celebrated a successful 12 months of rewarding
events and activities ,and welcomed a very special guest…
One hundred and sixty guests
enjoyed a fantastic Northern
Branch Dinner on 6 December. The
evening included a superb meal,
networking, and a celebration of a
year of Branch events that included
the Innovation Day, karting,
technical evenings and the first
YP Manager for a Day event.
England rugby international Neil
Back MBE gave an entertaining and
inspirational after-dinner speech
talking through his career and
sharing some amusing anecdotes
from his World Cup victory. The
evening also raised £1900 for
the chosen charity, the Royal
Manchester Children’s Hospital.
This money will go towards the
building of a new helicopter pad at
their facility, a very worthy cause.
The organisers would like to thank
everyone who attended and helped
to make the evening a success.
