This "Independence Day Weekend" event had been sponsored by the Washington State Army National Guard via Fort Lewis for many years, using Range KD22 for a 1000-yard day, an 80-shot Regional day, and a day for NMC Team and CMP EIC. Since it has moved to Paul Bunyan Rifle & Sportsman's Club, the first day is at 600 yards, followed by the 80-shot Regional, and finishing with the Team and EIC on the third day. The 2014 weekend had good weather with some cloudiness around the periods of warm sun. As local residents know, the 4th Weekend can be somewhat wet but this year we got lucky! The Dale Weiler Trophy: Marilyn Solis, Brianna Rachinski, and Bob Wendt. The Dale Weiler Trophy goes to the top prone shooter on the first day of competition (31 entries). Junior and USA U-25 shooter Brianna Rachinski was the match winner, out-pointing some very good prone shooters through the three 20-shot matches. Brianna had scores of 199-9x, 200-15x and 198-8x for a total of 597-32x. The first two matches are Iron Sight Only but the third match allows for Any Sight, although Brianna shot Irons in all stages. Both the Washington Regional Championship, hosted by Kitsap Rifle & Revolver Club, and the Governor’s-20 Championship, hosted by Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club, are held in June. The nice weather in June is ideal for pistol competition. After last year’s low attendance, this year had record attendance for both matches, with 35 competitors each. Out of state competitors arrived from Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. The winners are listed below. You can find the entire match results posted on the WSRPA website. One of the highlights of the June championships was that Washington’s first female earned her distinguished pistol shot award. Beverly Esler became the 18th State Distinguished Pistol Shot at the Governor’s-20 match. These scores were fired in Sectional matches held in Spokane, Vancouver, West Seattle, and Davenport. Scores from Sectionals fired across the country are added together and count toward the NRA National Indoor Championship results. The primary rifle disciplines shot in Washington are international (standing) air rifle, precision (3-position) air rifle, conventional (4-postion) smallbore rifle, and metric 3-position) smallbore rifle. Matches are divided into junior and open categories, and individual and team prizes are awarded. Rifle shooters from Washington compete avidly in the Sectional matches. Several months pass after the Sectional matches are fired before the National Indoor Championship match results are tabulated and posted. Washington shooters had a great year this year, highlighted by 3 individual and 3 team national championship titles. Corinne Blair won the national junior championship for the precision air rifle with a score of 593x600, followed by fellow West Seattle Thunderbirds – Totems teammates Sierra Avril and Alec Patajo for 2nd and 3rd place. Casey Iwamoto rounded out the West Seattle team which also won the junior team nation championship team. West Seattle’s strong performance in junior precision air rifle also carried over into the open precision air rifle match. Here, Alec Patajo won the individual national championship with a score of 592x600 and the same team (Patajo, Blair, Avril, and Iwamoto) won the open team championship. The West Seattle Totems – Thunderbirds (Alec Patajo, Owen Yeasting, Corinne Blair, and Casey Iwamoto) also won the national junior championship for conventional smallbore rifle with a very strong score of 1580-88 x. This is the 3rd year in a row that West Seattle has won this national championship. And finally, Alec Patajo won the open metric position smallbore rifle national championship with a score of 1156x1200. USA Shooting is the national governing body for Olympic shooting sports. The World Cup in shooting is held every 4 years, this year it will be held in Granada, Spain. This years’ USA Shooting National Championship served as a selection match for some spots on the World Cup, in addition to its normal function of selecting national champions. Several rifle shooters from Washington had excellent performances in the National Championships. Rifle disciplines include international (standing only) air rifle, and 50 meter (smallbore) prone and 3-position rifle, and 300 meter prone and 3-position rifle. Dan Lowe (Olympia) started off by placing 3rd in 50 meter 3position rifle. Dan shot an aggregate of 2326 x 2400 (over two Amanda Furrer days) to capture a place in the 8-person final. Dan then finished 2nd in the final, giving him an additional 7 points added to his aggregate score. Dan is now shooting with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Dan Lowe Next up was women’s prone rifle, an event which in not fired in the Olympics but is part of the World Championships. 2012 Olympian Amanda Furrer (Spokane) finished in 3 rd place. The women’s prone rifle championship consists of two 60 shot matches, scored in the decimal system where a perfect shot is a 10.9. Amanda shot strings of 621.7 and 618.6 for an aggregate of 1240.3 x 1380.0. This score tied her with Reya Kempley for 2nd/3rd place, and Amanda was awarded 3rd place by a tie-breaking procedure (inner tens). Lauren Phillips (Seabeck) finished in 1st A Class with a score of 1231.6. On the men’s side, Dan Lowe and Eric Uptagrafft (Spokane-going way back) finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in men’s 50-meter prone rifle. The matches are scored the same with two 60 shot matches scored in the decimal system. The men’s prone match includes a knockout final with the top 8 shooters. Dan finished 4th in the final (5 points added to his score) for 2nd place overall, but Eric won the final, boosting lifting himself into 3rd place. In men’s air rifle, Dan Lowe finished in 3rd place. The men’s air rifle championship consists of two 60 shot matches, scored in the decimal system where a perfect shot is 10.9. Dan shot strings of 619.2 and 621.8, making it to the 8 person knockout final. Dan finished 2 nd in the final, securing the 3rd place medal. Amanda Furrer and Lauren Phillips continued their strong performances in women’s 50 meter 3-position rifle. Amanda fired strings of 579 (x600) and 582 to make the 8-person final, and then place 3rd in the final, winning the silver medal. Eric Uptagrafft Lauren, who was shooting for the junior women’s championship as well, shot strongly with two strings of 577. To determine the junior women’s 3-position national champion, these scores were combined with the results of the junior Olympics. Lauren was awarded with the junior women’s 3-positon smallbore rifle national championship based on the strength of her performances at both the junior Olympics and this national championship match. The following Washington shooters qualified for the World Cup rifle team traveling to Granada, Spain, September 6 - 20: Amanda Furrer: Women’s 50 meter 3-position rifle and 50 meter prone rifle. Lauren Phillips: Junior women’s 50 meter 3-position rifle and 50 meter prone rifle. Eric Uptagrafft: Men’s 300 meter prone rifle. Lauren Phillips 11 The Washington Long Range Championship at Rattlesnake by Gary Rasmussen Setting up on the 1000-yard firing line. The mid-June LR Championship has been an F Class State Championship (Open and TR) for a couple of years but this year was "opened" to the sling shooters. As an LR match, the allowable equipment was Any Rifle (not restricted to Palma or Match or Service Rifle), but were limited to specific types of sight, either Any Sight (usually for Scope) or Iron Sights only. The course of fire was five strings of 20 shots over two days, June 21 and 22, at the Rattlesnake Mountain Shooting Facility, near Benton City (north of Richland). Conditions at the tournament were rather benign for the greater Richland area. This time of year temperatures approaching 100 would not be unusual, but we got lucky and had days in the low 80s. The wind conditions were lighter than in the Palma Championship in May but that actually made the shooting conditions WORSE: the light winds shifted fast and often, and those shooting the "less capable ballistic" calibers were struggling. The F Class Open shooters tried to put a good distance between themselves and the F/TR guys but the "lighter" category held tough. In the sling category (prone shooters) the leaders gap increased or decreased as the relays progressed. The competition was excellent in both categories. There were a total of 34 shooters present: 22 in F Class (9 Open and 13 TR) and 12 in Prone (4 using Any Rifle and 8 with Palma). The F Class Open category allows a rifle up to 22 pounds in weight, including scope, and the use of a "joystick" tripod, and just about any caliber that doesn't require a muzzle brake for the shooter to survive the shot experience. The TR category restricts caliber to .308 or .223, there must be an attached bipod, and the entire rifle with scope and bipod cannot weigh more than 18 pounds. An NRA Any Rifle is similar to the F Class Open, although it is shot from the slinged prone position, and there can be restrictions on sights. For instance: the 2014 State Championship designated Match #1 and Match #4 as Any Sight but Match #2, #3 and #5 was limited to Iron Sights. The Palma Rifle, of course, is either .308 or .223 and is always Iron Sights. A Match Rifle is similar to an Any Rifle but it must have a magazine capacity of at least 5 rounds, which does restrict available calibers a bit (.22 to .338 is allowed). And Service Rifle, of course, is the usual M1 Garand, M14/M1A and M16/AR15, but no one entered the tournament with that category of rifle. 12 Rattlesnake sunshine and "black" targets. Match #1 began Saturday morning with some hints at what everyone could expect from sunlight and wind through the weekend. Without a cloud cover of some kind to soften the rays, the hard summer sun caused the targets to appear to be in shadow, making the target a difficult image for iron sights. The wind was constantly changing, too, even that in the morning, so the iron sight shooters were under a double-whammy situation! Steve Zock was the only High Master F Class shooter entered so he was going for overall winds in every match. There were 9 Unclassified shooters gathered into a nominal "Master" class. The Experts and Sharpshooters were combined into a single class. And the Marksman class had 7 total shooters entered. Tod Hendricks (Open) won the match with 188-6x while Ted Anstensen (Open) was 1st Master with 187-2x and Ron Sanders (Open) was 2nd MA with 176-2x. Keith Glasscock (Open) was the Expert winner with 1863x and Heather McGuire (TR) was the top Marksman shooter with 173-1x. Steve Zock (Open) won Match #2 with 191-1x while Tod Hendricks was 1st MA at 187-3x and Ted Anstensen was 2nd MA at 180-4x. Keith Glasscock repeated as the Expert class winner with 178-4x and Bill Brown (Open) won Marksman with 180-1x. Ted Anstensen won Match #3 with 191-7x while Tod Hendricks was 1st MA with 187-3x and Monte Milanuk (TR) was 2nd MA with 176-1x. Steve Zock rebounded with another match win in #4 with 195-6x and Tod Hendricks was 1st MA with 193-4x. Either the winds were starting to cooperate or the shooters were getting really good at reading the changes! The Expert shooters were realigned into the Master class on Sunday as a couple shooters dropped out, so Keith Glasscock took the 2nd MA award with 192-5x. Michael McIntyre (Open) was 1st Sharpshooter at 191-3x and Roger McRoberts (TR) was 2nd SS with 185-2x. The top Marksman shooter was Bill Brown at 183-2x. The finalstring Match #4 was won by Keith Glasscock with 188-1x. Tod Hendricks continued his winning ways by taking 1st MA with 187-2x and Praveen Kumar (TR) was 2nd MA with 182-3x. Jeff Hogan (TR) was 1st SS with 18706x and Roger McRoberts was 2nd SS with 181-2x. Bill Brown was again the top Marksman shooter with 181-2x. Steve Zock repeated (I think this may be his third title?) as the State F Class LR Champion with an aggregate of 946-16x, but Tod Hendricks was very close and 1st MA with 942-18x. Ted Anstensen was 2nd MA with 916-18x and Monte Milanuk was the High TR shooter with 889-11x. Keith Glasscock was the top Expert Class shooter with a top-tierchallenging 935-17x, and Michael McIntyre was the High Senior with 881-11x. Bill Brown won the Marksman class with 898-11x. 13 The F Class Champion F Class Target Rifle Champion 14 In the Prone category competition, Gary Rasmussen (Any Rifle) won Matches 1 and 2 with scores of 197-9x and 197-6x. Michael Maurer (Any Rifle) was 1st High Master in the two matches with 193-8x and 190-4x. John Julian (Any Rifle) was the Master class winner with 186-4x in Match 1 while Luke Rettmer (Palma) was 1st MA in Match 2 with 175-3x. Mike Maurer won Match 3 with 193-6x while Gary Rasmussen was 1st HM with 193-4x and John Julian was 1st MA with 187-8x. On Sunday, Gary Rasmussen repeated as Match Winner in the Any Sight match (#3) with 197-12x and Mike Maurer took 1st HM with 195-13x. John Julian repeated as 1st MA with 193-5x. The final Match #4 was won by Anette Wachter (Palma) with 191-7x while Gary Rasmussen was 1st HM with 191-4x. Pam Coombs (Any Rifle) was the 1st MA winner 189-6x. Gary Rasmussen was the Prone State LR Champion with a total of 975-35x. Mike Maurer was High Senior with 951-35x and James Obermeyer (Palma) was 1st HM with 924-25x.
