LOOP THE LITTLE
LAKE TRESTLE
PROJECT
Eileen
McCoy,
The Loop Lower Little Lake Butte
Des Morts initiative includes two
new trestle bridges to close the Lower Little Lake Butte
Des Morts loop. It is anticipated the trestle project will
cost just over $3 million and will be funded with a
combination of grants, fundraising, and partnership
from the municipalities. Future Neenah will serve as the
fundraising arm of Navigate Neenah-Menasha, a multiyear, multi-faceted initiative. At the end of 2015, we
were over half way to the $1 million fundraising goal. It
is anticipated
construction of the
trestles will take
place in 2017.

ARROWHEAD PARK
SHARE YOUR IDEAS!
The land on the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts
now known as Arrowhead Park was deeded to the City
of Neenah in 1951 and designated for public recreation
use in 1975. It has been left undeveloped for decades,
but was leased out for various industrial uses. The
demolition of the steam plant represents the end of
that era. The trail was constructed along the shoreline
in 2014, and plans are underway to
build two new trestle bridges,
completing a trail loop around the
Little Lake. The time to develop
Arrowhead Park has finally arrived!

do in Arrowhead Park by visiting

PARKS
City of Neenah Parks
Do you have a favorite park? Because of all the
time I spent with my children and now grandchild
at Memorial Park that would have to be my
favorite. Being a community park there are so
many different things you can do there and it is a
park that can be used all year; from sledding and
ice skating in the winter to soccer, softball and fun
runs during the summer and seeing so many
people using the trails at any time of the year.
MEET THE PARKS
AND RECREATION
COMMISSION
The Parks and Recreation
Commission is responsible for
the supervision and
management of all public
parks, recreation facilities and
activities. The Commission
meets on the third Thursday of
each month at 4:30 PM. Visit
neenahgov.org, for meeting
dates & agendas.
In your time on the Commission, what have
been the most memorable projects or
activities? The day the rocket slide was taken out
of service was a sad day, for thousands who had
used it over the years. I was on the committee that
did the fundraising for the new Plexus Rocket
Playground and also helped with the playground
build. Few people realize that the playground was
assembled by volunteers with special help coming
from the playground building veterans of the
Neenah Rotary.
Lee Hillstrom has served on the Parks and
Recreation Commission since 2001.
What motivates you to volunteer your time as a
P & R Commissioner? It is easy to be motivated
and want to keep volunteering when you see so
many families using our parks and recreational
programs. In large part, the quality of life we have
in Neenah is related to the parks and recreational
programs, which so many use and the physical
and mental health that using those facilities and
taking part in those programs creates.
What do you do for recreation? My wife, Joy,
and I enjoy taking long walks, whether it’s just four
miles or finding the time and energy to do thirteen
miles. We enjoy the fresh air and always notice
something new about our great city.

Did you know…

Laudan Park was set aside as a boulevard in the city plat in 1856.

The park was originally called Laudan Fields and consisted of 4 acres. The fields take their name from Mr. Laudan, whose property fronted
the fields.

The area was farmed and used to grow hay into the 1890s.

Fields were used for summer softball leagues and high school athletes.

During the summer of 1933, most of the property was used as a community garden.

In 1947 the city sold part of the fields to the school district for the construction of Wilson Elementary School.

The park shelter was originally built in 1965.
The 2 acre park has a playground, open-air shelter, paved trail, picnic tables, water bubbler, open space, and a baseball backstop.

Health & Safety Issues
The City of Neenah is advising the public that playing in the fountains at
Shattuck and Riverside Parks may result in serious injury or illness. Warning
signs have been installed informing the public that playing in the fountains is
not allowed.
MEMORIALS FOR THE LIVING
Parks and Recreation play a vital role in building and maintaining the
health and well being of the individual, the economy, the environment
and the community as a whole. A donation to Parks and Recreation
is an investment in quality of life. Planting a tree or installing a
Western Cedar memorial bench is a thoughtful and distinctive way to
present a memorial to a deceased relative or friend, to honor a
person whom you love or respect, or to say thanks to a person or
group. That living, growing tree will be a constant reminder of the
reason you gave it. The memorial bench with an engraved plaque will
enhance the park, offering a resting area for leisure and relaxation.
Water in the fountains is not treated and sanitized to the same degree as a
swimming pool. The water may contain bacteria, viruses or parasites, such
as Cryptosporidium or Giardia, which can cause serious illness. Children are
at the greatest risk because they are most likely to play in the fountains, and
they most easily spread pathogens due to wearing of diapers, drinking the
water and/or hand to mouth behaviors.
Please enjoy the sound and beauty of the fountains. Don’t put your children
or yourself at risk by playing in the fountains or drinking fountain water.
Trees: Various species available. Donation - $150
Memorial Benches with engraved plaque. Donation $1,200
GIVE THESE GIFTS FOR: Memorials, Anniversary, Co-Worker,
Retirement, Mother’s Day, Grandchildren, Arbor Day, Special
Occasion, Father’s Day, Special Friend, Earth Day.
To ensure tree species diversity, the Parks Department has selected
given species for different parks throughout the system. Western
Cedar memorial benches can also be installed at various parks
throughout Neenah.
Citizens committed to leading the community in the
implementation of sustainable practices and initiatives.
Visit Sustainable Neenah at the Neenah Farm Market on Saturday

sustainability practices. The 2016 Farm Markets begin on Saturday,

Martial Arts class for beginners. At Karate America, we
are dedicated to three core values. BELIEVE: Your
child will learn that the first step to any success is to
believe in themselves. WORK HARD: We believe in
hard work at school, at home and in life. Hard work
builds discipline, character and strength. Watch as
your child grows physically fit, mentally strong and
socially prepared. BE NICE: The foundation of our program is built on
courtesy, respect and honor. Our environment fosters an attitude that will
supercharge your child and propel them to reaching their full potential. (The

Registration Is Easy – Here’s How
Registration begins April 6 for City of Neenah Residents and April 20 for Non-Residents
SUNSHINE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: The NPRD believes in providing services and programs to CITY OF
NEENAH RESIDENTS who wish to participate, regardless of ability to pay. If you would like more information on possible financial
assistance, an application can be picked up in our office or printed on our website. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-base basis.
FEES: Resident / Non Resident: All registrants will either be a resident of the City of Neenah or a non-resident. Your
residency is based on the city/town/village you pay taxes, not necessarily what your mailing address indicates. However, an increased
non-resident fee will only be assessed for programs at the Neenah Pool (lessons and season passes) or when renting a facility.
RECIPROCITY AGREEMENT: Residents of the City of Appleton, City of Menasha and City of Neenah will pay the resident fee
for all programs and facility rentals in each city. Please Note: This does not change the status of residency during registration dates. A
City of Menasha / Appleton Resident is still considered a non-resident during the City of Neenah Resident Registration.
REFUNDS: Full refunds are made if NPRD cancels a program. All other cancellations must be done by contacting NPRD at
886-6060 at least 48 hours before a program begins. A $5.00 service charge, per transaction, is applied to anyone who wishes for a
check or credit card reimbursement (we do not refund in cash) OR 100% of the class fee can be applied to your household to be used
towards any other activities at a later time.
ACCOMODATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: The NPRD is committed to meeting the needs of persons with
permanent disabilities. Appropriate auxiliary aids and services may be provided as necessary, to enable you to fully participate in
parks and recreation services, programs and activities. NPRD asks that you register and request accommodations as early as
possible to ensure necessary accommodations can be coordinated, preferably a one-week notice.
ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY FAMILY WAIVER POLICY: The NPRD admires the sacrifice of military personnel and their
dependents and wants to provide the support they need. Our department feels that these families should be able to enjoy the many
parks, programs and facilities in our community. Therefore, a program is available to deployed military personnel and their
dependents. For information visit www.neenahgov.org - departments – parks & recreation – permits, forms & applications.
ACTIVITY CANCELLATIONS: To find out a program has been cancelled due to weather, call our cancellation line 886-6068 or
visit our website www.neenahgov.org - departments – Parks & Recreation, or like us no Facebook – Neenah Parks & Recreation.
