Premier and Minister for the Arts
I’m delighted to welcome thousands of Queensland children to enjoy
performing arts in their local schools with the 2017 Youth Touring
Program delivered by Queensland Music Festival (QMF). Performances
and workshops will tour statewide to primary and secondary schools,
with all productions linked to the Australian Curriculum.
The mix of performances highlights Indigenous culture, the wonders of
the Great Barrier Reef, the role of technology, and re-workings of The
Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht and The Wind in the Willows.
Students can experience music, drama and dance from a range
of dynamic artists and arts companies including La Boite Theatre
Company, internationally renowned musician Tjupurru and awardwinning playwright Marcel Dorney.
This is an especially significant year for the long-running program
under the leadership of new presenter QMF who are working to ensure
the program has a secure future for new generations of children.
With its long history of engaging with communities, QMF aims to
connect the young people of Queensland through the Youth Touring
Program to arts and new creative experiences. Get ready for an
inspiring and educational performance heading your way in 2017.

Schools touring has been part of our State’s artistic landscape for
over 50 years. So many Queenslanders speak of their first experience
of professional performance taking place when they were children,
and the impact of this work on literally millions of people over time
cannot be under-estimated. The 2017 program is full of vibrant shows
which will entertain and educate young people all over the State. It is
also great that QMF’s highly successful Score IT! music competition for
schools is also now built into the program. I am delighted we have a
role in sustaining this well-loved tradition into the future.
Discover a world of creative learning
QMF is delighted to be delivering the Youth Touring Program,
which until recently was managed by Artslink Queensland
(Queensland Arts Council).
The program provides state-wide access to music, drama and dance,
with performances and workshops that educate and empower.
We offer a world of creative learning, encouraging students to
create, change and question.
Built on a strong 50-year tradition, more than 50,000 students
across 230 primary and secondary schools benefit annually through
activities specifically tailored to Queensland curriculum objectives.
For many young people, our shows are a formative introduction to live
performance that inspires a lifelong appreciation of the creative arts.
About the 2017 Program
It’s a big, beautiful world out there: one that is closer than ever thanks
to technology and travel, but one that is constantly changing.
The question for us as parents and educators is how to best prepare
our young people for that world.
Curiosity and an appetite for learning have been shown to outperform intellect as an indication of success. Empathy, resilience
and critical thinking are vital attributes for emotional wellbeing and
engaged citizenship.
Studies repeatedly show that experiencing live performance has an
incredible effect on helping young people develop these skills and
attitudes. Your students might be seasoned explorers of the Arts, or
they might be ready for their first adventure. Whatever their level, we
have an experience to delight and inspire, to challenge and stimulate.
So start your students on a journey of discovery: discovering the
classics, discovering facts or just discovering more about themselves
and the people around them.

About QMF
Using this program
Queensland Music Festival (QMF) is a state-wide
celebration of musical excellence with an international
reputation and an unparalleled geographic reach.
We’ve made selecting creative learning experiences for your students
quick and easy. On each performance and workshop page you will find
vital information to help you choose which experiences to book.
The best of local, national and international talent bring every
conceivable style of music to Queenslanders from all walks of life, in
Brisbane and in regional and remote centres from the Torres Strait to
the Gold Coast. Since 1999 the Festival has engaged audiences of more
than a million people through projects in 80 regions across the State.
QMF has redefined the traditional festival model to engage deeply with
communities over time, ignite artistic potential and leave a lasting
legacy. In collaboration with councils and communities, QMF inspires
participation in music-making and performances that reflect local
culture and tell local stories.
The Festival has received national recognition for recent projects
involving large-scale engagement and community participation.
These include the Under This Sky in Logan, Mount Isa Celebrates,
the World’s Biggest Orchestra in Brisbane, Boomtown in Gladstone,
Behind The Cane in Bowen, Ailan Kores on Thursday Island, the Cape
York Instrumental Program in Aurukun, Hopevale and Coen, and the
establishment of the Yarrabah Band Festival and revival of the
Yarrabah Brass Band in Far North Queensland.

This is more guideline than restriction. You might be studying
Children’s Theatre in Year 10, for example, so a Primary targeted
show might be perfect.

the visit and give ideas for extension activities.

All performances are $8 + GST per student (minimum charge $800
+ GST). If you have fewer than 100 students and can’t afford the
minimum, our Youth Touring Team will be happy to help suggest
options for you. Workshop and residency prices vary, check the
page for details.

a performance can often be scheduled to take place after school?
This is a great option if you’re having trouble fitting a performance
or workshop into a busy school schedule, or if your P&C would like
to use it as a fundraiser by inviting friends and families.

How to book
Touring areas 2017
There is a booking form on the last page of this booklet, but we also
have an easy online form qmf.org.au/youth-touring

Choose whichever is easiest for you then follow these three
simple steps:

1. Select your experiences
Identify your school’s touring region and select your creative learning
experiences.
2. Complete the Booking Form
You can use the one attached and submit it via scan, fax or post.
Alternatively use our easy online booking form and we will receive it
via the magic of the internet. You will receive an email confirming your
booking request.
3. Confirmation
You will receive confirmation of your performance dates and times
via email, and a letter outlining the timeline of invoicing and future
communication with us. Term 1 and Term 2 performance dates are
released in late November and Term 3 and Term 4 dates are released in
April. You will have 5 working days from receipt of your confirmation
email to let us know if there is any reason why these dates or times will
not work. After this point cancellation fees will apply, see our Terms &
Conditions for details.
IMPORTANT STUFF TO KNOW
Payment
50% of your performance fee will be due two weeks before your
performance date. The balance will be invoiced after the show date,
once final attendance numbers are known.

attached to this booklet. They are also on our website. Please read

Benjamin & Me
One morning, Will wakes up with an idea: to build the
first ever boy-dog operated flying machine. And so,
this coming-of-age adventure takes to the skies...
Benjamin is Will’s best mate in the whole wide world. Benjamin is also
a dog. One morning, Will wakes up with an idea: he has decided to
build the first ever boy-dog operated flying machine, but can he keep
his idea safe from the villainous Splinter McGee?
Follow the extraordinary journey of this young boy, his dog, their wild
imagination, and a ukulele. The show features a smattering of songs,
crazy contraptions and illustrations by visual artist Jacinta Larcombe.
Benjamin and Me explores themes of friendship and loss. It’s the
newest work from award-winning writer and performer Mark Storen
(The Polite Gentleman), and is the debut production for his new
company Whiskey & Boots.
Benjamin & Me is a show that is also suitable for families and
adventurous adults.

This is a multi-disciplinary work with plenty for students to respond to:
one person voicing many characters, storytelling, live original songs, a

Dinosaur Time Machine
Buckle up and take a trip back in time to the
world of the dinosaurs.
Two adventurous performers use science, circus, puppetry and
imagination to give you a glimpse into history that you won’t forget.
Dinosaur Time Machine incorporates up-to-date science and
discoveries made about dinosaurs and the environment that they
lived in, and presents it in a fun and highly visual way. Incorporating
circus, puppetry, simple narrative and imaginative play, this is a unique
educational theatre production.
The science doesn’t stop at paleontology as concepts such as
geography and biology are also incorporated. And did we mention the
life-sized baby T-Rex?
Dinosaur Time Machine was awarded Best Children’s Show 2015 by
the Adelaide Advertiser and we are delighted to be hosting its
Queensland premiere.

QMF AND FAIR PLAY PRESENT
Fair Play
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn.” — Benjamin Franklin
Fair Play presents a variety of short scenes in which children are being
bullied. Students are encouraged to discuss what is happening in the
scene and why, and suggest what might have been done differently to
produce a positive outcome.
Playing scenes out again, students can jump into the show to practice
what they would do instead, exploring possible courses of action and
analysing the consequences of each choice. Discussions are guided by
a facilitator, with the students themselves ultimately determining the
best path in each situation.
Students learn that there is not ‘one correct answer’; instead there are
a variety of actions that best suit their own situation and capabilities.
Scenarios are practised in a safe space giving students knowledge and
tools that they can use when similar situations arise.
Co-devised by renowned Queensland Educationalist and Theatre
Practitioner, Dr Natasha Budd, Fair Play complements existing school
anti-bullying strategies and aims to broaden children’s repertoire of
behaviour. The aim is to equip them with the understanding and skills
necessary to negotiate situations of bullying, which often occur out of
sight of adults.

The Box
Discover the power of human relationships
through clowning and physical comedy.
Two clowns have a job: to move a box across a room. It sounds
simple but nothing is ever simple when clowns are involved! Chaos,
comic creativity and fantastic situations play out as these two
clowns show us how extraordinary the ordinary can become, while
exploring the importance of cooperation and demonstrating just
how funny we all are at heart.
The Box brings together red nose clown, slapstick and physical
comedy into one hilarious show about human relationships,
overcoming difference and working together.
A pair of clowns and a seemingly mundane box combine to make
a heart-warming production that inspires play, creativity and
contagious laughter in students and teachers alike.
A hit with audiences when it last toured as part of our program,
teachers also praised The Box for its problem-solving references
and messages of resilience and co-operation.

The Wind in the Willows
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing —
absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as
simply messing about in boats.”
Kenneth Grahame’s rollicking tale is one of the true enduring classics
of children’s literature, and legendary Queensland theatre-makers,
La Boite Theatre Company have given it a fresh coat of paint.
Join Ratty, Mole, Badger and the incorrigible Mr. Toad on their journeys,
trials and misadventures around the river, the Wild Woods and beyond.
Featuring a magical set with plenty of surprises throughout, and
playful costuming and props, the performance will take creatures
(small and large) on a heartfelt and humorous adventure that explores
humanity, time and the value of friendship.
This touring version is a one-man show, so there will be plenty for
students to appreciate and respond to in the performance and
the design.

The Clown from Snowy River
An energetic, hilarious exploration of the
Australian national identity.
Inspired by his beloved Banjo Paterson, The Swagman sets out to stage
his version of Australian history. His clown assistant Dazza, however,
intends to shed new light on the past.
Together these two clowns (one Indigenous, one non-Indigenous)
attempt to present the defining moments of Australian history, from
Gallipoli to the Sydney Olympics, and showcase iconic Aussies from
Ned Kelly to Kylie Minogue. Created with and for young people,
The Clown from Snowy River is an entertaining, engaging and timely
examination of reconciliation and the meaning of ‘sorry.’
With excellent cross-curricular links to History and Social Studies,
as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives, the
performance also has rich textual and visual imagery for students to
respond to.

QMF AND DIDJERIBONE PRESENT
The Didjeribone Show
A unique combination of cultures, technologies
and sounds.
Playing a unique slide didgeridoo named 'The Didjeribone' (a cross
between a didgeridoo and a trombone), and with the addition of
sampling and electronic effects, Tjupurru performs as a one-man
band; creating live samples and looping them to create songs and
soundscapes that criss-cross musical genre.
Students contribute as he interacts with them to create ingenious
and innovative songs and sound-scapes that blend elements of the
traditional with the contemporary.
Teachers and students have the opportunity to hear instant results
of their shared music-making abilities as well as developing a wider
appreciation of Indigenous culture.
Primary students will be delighted by Tjupurru’s story-telling
and musical knowledge; strengthening their understanding of
Indigenous culture and history, as well as rhythm and music-making.
Performances are easily adapted for groups of students with special
educational needs.
Secondary students can further explore an in-depth cultural
musical history, infusing ancient music with modern technology.
Creative musical ideas and technical aspects are demonstrated
throughout the show, and an interactive live looping element teaches
excellent arranging skills to music and technology students.

QMF AND LIZ LEA PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
Reef UP!
Reef UP! combines scientific research and
the magic of theatre to share the story of our
threatened coral reefs and what we can do to help.
Meet a sea-full of loveable characters (and villains): Manta and
Ray, Slinky the shark, clown fish, Minkie whales, and a devious
Crown of Thorns starfish called Priscilla!
Using dance, theatre, and some amazing costumes, audiences
learn how all life on the reef is interrelated. If a single organism or
species is affected or declines in number it can have a huge ripple
effect both down and up the Great Barrier Reef’s food chain.
To a soundtrack of popular songs and original music, Reef UP!
highlights the beauty and precarious nature of the reef ecosystems
across the globe, and helps students explore the simple things that
they can do to help preserve these breathtaking environments.
Australia is taking the lead in collaborative scientific and arts
research, and this will be acclaimed choreographer Liz Lea’s
third joint venture after the success of Flying Facts (a theatrical
exploration of the history and science of flight) and Star Struck
(a dance-based response to astronomy and the science of the
Big Bang).
Developed with support from QL2 Dance Canberra and an
impressive array of leading scientific collaborators, including three
people recently featured on David Attenborough’s documentary
about the Great Barrier Reef.

QMF AND SQUID STAMP PRESENT
The Technology Show
Join the attendees of a Technology Anonymous
meeting on a buzzing ride as they delve into their
daily tech addictions.
Acclaimed theatre-in-education company, Squid Stamp, return
to Queensland with their dynamic, high-energy, comedic sketch
show that explores how the i-Things and Whatsagrams of the 21st
Century are used, and sometimes abused, in everyday life.
The Technology Show helps students get social media savvy whilst
giggling about their gadgets and questioning their tech habits,
contributing to their social and emotional learning by delivering
important information about cyber safety, digital citizenship and
modern technologies. Plus, it’s in 3D!
Through presentation and open discussion, the show gives students
the opportunity to consider the use and impact of technology on
equity, and personal and social values, and helps them to make
informed and ethical decisions about the role, impact and use
of technologies.

An Experiment with
Caucasian Chalk Circle
Brecht’s story about love, war, destruction
and justice — as seen through the eyes of two
young people.
A chalk circle is drawn on the ground. But to whom does the
ground belong?
Two actors walk on stage after watching a professional production of
Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The pair begin to discuss
the story they have just seen and soon become embroiled in their own
retelling of Grusha Vashnadze’s journey, sharing with the audience her
fight to save and raise an abandoned child.
Award-winning playwright Marcel Dorney’s adaptation deconstructs
Brecht’s famous play, while simultaneously discussing Brechtian
techniques and philosophies with the audience. Filled with
contemporary references, this is a clever and funny reworking which
serves as an accessible introduction to Brecht and Epic theatre, as well
as a more in-depth exploration of The Caucasian Chalk Circle itself.

Storytelling & Song
Small Friends Storytelling
A magical day-long residency featuring an exciting
meeting of science, nature, art and storytelling.
Three artist-led workshops to help your students
respond to the performance of Benjamin & Me.
The Small Friends Storytelling program features new illustrated
science-adventure stories highlighting the role of partnerships and
co-operation in nature (not just competition). The books are made in
collaboration with writers, artists, scientists, educators and designers.
Both workshops include: storytelling, a facilitated discussion on
symbiosis and other scientific relationships within the stories, an
artist-led drawing/painting activity and an author-led writing activity
based on an imaginary aquatic landscape.
Workshop 1: Tell Your Own Story
Participants will, in their own words, tell their own version of Benjamin
& Me using the characters and key thematic points as a starting point.
Students can retell their story through spoken word, writing it or drawing
a series of images, culminating in a shared show-and-tell.
Workshop 2: Song-writing
The Squid, the Vibrio & the Moon is about the symbiotic relationship of
the bobtail squid and the bacteria that help it glow in the moonlight.
Meet Ali, an intrepid Vibrio fischeri bacterium determined to reach
safety, and Sepio, a baby bobtail squid who is still unable to glow. Can
Ali and Sepio help each other? What kind of dangers do they face?
What can we learn from their adventure? Ideal for Years 1-6.
Participants will be guided through a song-writing workshop using the
characters from the show as a starting point. Groups of 4 or 5 will work
on a part of the song. The parts are combined by the group, and then
put to music by the performers from Benjamin & Me. The group performs
and records the song which remains as a reminder of the experience.
Zobi and the Zoox is the story of the microscopic friends living in a
tiny coral polyp on the Great Barrier Reef. With her home under threat
from a warming ocean, Zobi, a brave rhizobia bacterium, teams
up with a family of slow but steady Zoox (zooxanthellae). The coral
becomes gravely ill and bacteria around them begin to starve. Can
Zobi and the Zoox work together to save the day? Ideal for Years 3-8.
Workshop 3: Build Your Own Flying Machine
Using found materials, participants will design and build their own flying
machine based on the machine in the show. Each group will design a
different component, culminating in the final construction of the flying
machine, left for display in the classroom.

Cross Curriculum Collaboration
Chores & Circus
Enrich your performance experience with an
inspiring cross curriculum workshop tailored to
your school’s needs.
An edge of your seat performance followed by brainbuilding circus workshops — it’s one amazing day!
Inspired by slapstick legends Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin,
Chores is an exuberant combination of skilled circus stunts and
uproarious interactive gags. Two excitable brothers are definitely,
about to, almost, at some stage, maybe, do the chores their mother
has asked them to do.
Cross Curriculum Collaboration provides professional development for
classroom and non-arts specialist teachers. You will collaborate with a
Flying Arts Artist to combine visual arts practice with a non-arts area of
the curriculum, culminating in an artist-led workshop for your students.
Responding to requests from schools all over the state for workshops,
Chores is back in 2017 with one amazing day of fun and action!
The day starts with a performance of Chores for all the participants.
After a short break it is time for students to try some circus out for
themselves. Workshops are fast paced and full of action – never a
moment to spare! Students explore a full range of circus skills including
juggling and diabolo sticks as well as the Chores boys’ own invention,
Tyre Trampolining.
For students, this unique format offers a hands-on approach that
appeals to a variety of learning styles and reinforces student retention
of curriculum-based material in a fun and creative way. For teachers,
the collaboration will reveal rich insights into creative learning while
also providing templates, support and resources for the development of
cross-curricular lessons that stimulate and engage students.
What could a cross-curricular extension workshop look like for you?
Example: The Clown from Snowy River
This lesson plan has been used by the Chores artists to teach groups of
children with great success in schools and for companies like Flipside,
the Flying Fruit Flies and Circus Oz.
Build students’ skills and knowledge in making and responding by
creating a mixed media artwork that incorporates layers of Australian or
local history (HASS), using visual art technical skills.
The rich constructive stimulation of these circus workshops increase
skills in balance and focus: not only an exciting and different Health
and Physical Education lesson for your students but exercise for their
vestibular systems too!
Example: Dinosaur Time Machine
Students will create their own sculptural dinosaur in the style of the
Tjanpi and Erub weavers using plant fibres and recycled materials,
linking to the Biological Sciences (Living Things) and ATSI History
and Culture.

1. Looping Technology with Tjupurru
Connection to Culture
When Tjupurru tours around schools, the question he
gets asked most by young people is “Can I’ve a go?”...
Choose from one day residencies or shorter workshops
to connect your students to Indigenous culture.
Let Tjupurru introduce you to looping technology, a relatively easy
and inexpensive piece of musical technology that can turn kids into
composers of their own songs in minutes. During the session he will share
his experiences of the varied practical application of the power of the
beat in the classroom: boosting engagement with writing and poetry,
not to mention mastering multiplication tables through rap.
One day residency
Start the day off with a dance performance in traditional dress for your
whole school. Three lucky class groups will then get to rotate through
your choice of workshops in Aboriginal Art, dance, boomerang, or
place-making and tools.
1 hour workshop: Prep – Year 3
INFORMATION
A highly interactive introduction to Gubbi Gubbi culture. Students learn
Gubbi Gubbi words and put them to use in games and songs, watch
how animal behaviour is observed in traditional dances, and shake
their tail / feathers as they do animal dances of their own.

Aboriginal culture does not have a written language. Storytelling
is crucial to the passing down of knowledge and history. Explore
storytelling through the medium of Indigenous art, and dance and oral
history in this interactive demonstration.
2. Vocal Health
Over 1/3 of teachers report experiencing vocal problems during their
career and 1/5 report missing work due to voice troubles. For actors the
voice is also a vital tool but one which they are trained to take care of.
Let our on-tour performers take staff at your school through a session at
the start or end of the school day. Practice a simple vocal warm-up that
will help prepare your voice for the rigours of the day ahead. Learn about
breath control and diaphragmatic support to help you project your voice
with ease, and lessen the strain on your vocal chords. Put these tools into
practice and see the difference it makes to your vocal health.

Score IT!
A film-scoring competition open to all Queensland
secondary school students.
Now annual, Score IT! is a state-wide film-scoring competition open
to all secondary school students in Queensland. The competition
challenges young composers to create an original composition for a
short film from Griffith Film School.
Students compete in the Score IT! Junior or Senior category by
composing and recording a soundtrack using instruments of
their choice. The more challenging Score IT! Plus is open to all
secondary students, requiring composition for specific instruments
and submission of a written score.

Entrants are judged by an expert panel including award-winning
screen composer and orchestrator, Cameron Patrick, orchestrator of
films such as Inside Out, Jurassic World and Star Trek Into Darkness.
The competition will culminate with an awards ceremony, where the
winning Score IT! Plus composition will be performed by students from
the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
In preparation for the competition, the QMF team will be travelling
across Queensland to run some intensive workshops on composing
for film.
