We begin with a word of thanks to all who supported our
undersized physical footprint. After much evaluation and
mission over the last year. The generosity in the form of

navigate through trying circumstances.
For 44 years, the Action Center has
held close to its mission to “provide an
immediate response to basic human
needs and promote pathways to self
sufficiency.” The community has been
extremely generous in its support of this
organization and for that we are very
grateful.
It has been four years since the “great
recession,” when the fortunes of our
nation, state and county experienced an
economic decline not seen since the late
1920’s and 1930’s. And since 2008, our
local community witnessed a cascading
economic effect, with job losses in the
private sector eventually impacting
proficiency of our case management

services. With added space, these
services will be more effective in
providing the quality of support
needed by our neighbors in the years
to come.
And, of course, we could not
accomplish all of this without being
partner-centric. We have more than
a half dozen close, long-standing
partnerships to provide housing,
education, health and mental health
services for our neighbors as they
move across the human services

continuum. We are also proud of
governments. This type of a one-two

Program Areas
Wherever clients are on the continuum of need, whether they have experienced a temporary
setback or have never been able to “make it” on their own, the Action Center can help.
A dedicated staff and volunteer counseling team offer clients a hand up by meeting, not only,
their immediate needs like food, shelter and clothing but also by connecting clients to the
resources and tools that will help them find their pathway to self-sufficiency. Through Intervention,
Prevention and Connection services, the Action Center gives help, provides hope and builds
dignity while breaking the cycle of poverty.
Intervention
A household in crisis requires the most basic of needs to be met first, before planning for
a sustainable future. Each day, an average of 160 households access the food pantry and
clothing bank, along with other services like bus passes, personal care items and the
22-bed homeless shelter to stop their household from falling deeper into poverty.
Intervention services stabilize families and individuals while they work with case managers
to create a longer-term self-sufficiency plan.
Prevention
Other client households can ward off a crisis before
it begins, or re-gain stability with short-term or seasonal
help from prevention services. For some, short-term
assistance might be a five-day supply of food,
help to pay a rent or utility bill, household items
or even tenant/landlord counseling. Many times,
prevention means covering extra costs that are
incurred at specific times of the year. The Action
Center’s seasonal programs like School Supply
Distribution, Thanksgiving Food Distribution
and Santa Shop all help to reduce the strain on
fragile finances.
Connection
After immediate needs are met, the Action Center
promotes pathways to self-sufficiency most
effectively by connecting clients to resources and
other programs in the community that offer the
tools to break the cycle of poverty. Connections and
referrals help clients improve their education, health
care opportunities, housing and employability.
Key partnerships include Estes Street Community
Clinic, Red Rocks Community College, Jefferson
County Human Services, Metro Community Provider
Network, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, and
Volunteers of America.

Client Services
In 2011-12, the needs of the community evolved. Many struggling families and individuals were still trying to dig out from
the economic crisis and yet others were slipping into poverty for the first time as their savings depleted and their homes
were foreclosed on. The Action Center saw more clients last year who never dreamed of asking for help. Some who asked
for help for the very first time were former donors and volunteers.
The Action Center served 28,000 unduplicated clients. On average, 160 households were served every single day.
As the needs of its clients evolved, so did the Action Center. New programs were formalized and piloted in an effort to
expand the second half of the mission - promoting pathways to self-sufficiency. A two-tiered case management program
was formalized and will be piloted in early 2013. This will provide clients with intensive, wrap-around case management. The
second was the Housing Mediation program that
helps families resolve issues and maintain stable
housing. Finally, the Shelter After-Care program
was implemented to connect shelter clients with
support, education, community partners, services

Action Beyond Today
In the past year, the Action Center experienced a number of exciting changes. New additions to
programming and services allowed the staff, donors and volunteers to take their actions beyond today –
setting the stage for a more effective approach to providing every client with an immediate response to basic
human needs and the pathways to self-sufficiency they need to break the cycle of poverty.
Action beyond today is the development and enhancement of programs (page 4) that meet the growing
complexity of issues that clients face.
Action beyond today is the expanded and streamlined opportunities offered to volunteers that allowed them
to explore new ways to donate their time, talents and passion (page 10).
Action beyond today is the Action Center’s commitment to manage resources efficiently so that more than 90
percent of everything received went directly back into programs (pages 11-12).
2012 Where Action Matters Breakfast
On May 9th, more than 500 members of the community
attended the Where Action Matters Breakfast to learn about
the Action Center’s mission and goals to help the working
poor and homeless of Jefferson County.
The event raised more than
$325,000 in gifts and pledges.
Former clients shared their inspiring stories of going from
despair to self-sufficiency and staff and board members
shared the Action Center’s vision.
FirstBank, Thrivent Financial, Physician Health Partners and
Ortho Colorado Hospital sponsored the event.

Seasonal Prevention Programs
The 2011 School Supply Distribution was held August 8th through the 13th. The week
started off with a demand that proved to be steady and greater than we’d ever seen before.
Nearly 900 students were served each day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Throughout the week, the numbers stayed strong and by Saturday 5,120 children had been
served with much-needed school supplies. This was the greatest need ever seen in the
event's history – 33 percent growth over 2010 numbers.
“We would not have been able to serve families in need with school
supplies and Thanksgiving food without the support from Jeffco
Public Schools, a generous donor community, amazing volunteers
and dedicated staff.”
Mag Strittmatter
As School Supply Distribution wrapped up with unprecedented
numbers, the staff began to prepare for similarly high need for
Thanksgiving food and toys at Santa Shop.
Pre-registered households drove through to pick up their boxes of
Thanksgiving Food. They stayed warm inside their cars and received
a bounty of holiday spirit from volunteers. In total, 6,513 meals were
enjoyed thanks to this vital program.

Client Story
Ray, Suzan and their
two children found the
Action Center just two
days before ending up
on the street.
After loosing jobs on
the West Coast, they
came back to Colorado
to be closer to family.
Ray, Suzan and their
son Cy moved in with
Suzan’s brother. At
the time, Suzan was
expecting their second
child and Ray had some part-time work. The
work he had was not enough for them to move
out on their own, so Ray was working very hard
to find additional work.
Over the next few months, the relationship
with Suzan’s brother became strained and he
said that once the new baby came, they would
have to move out. At first they thought he was
just upset and that they could work things out.
Toys came into the donation dock in small, large and extra-large
quantities throughout November and December. Each toy made its
way to the arms of a child in need. Santa Shop was once again hosted
at Faith Mountain and 4,415 children received toys!
Seasonal prevention programs like these help struggling individuals
and families who are on razor thin budgets. This prevents them from
choosing between seasonal expenses like school supplies and toys
or keeping up with rent and utilities; eliminating a choice that could
lead to possible eviction. When clients experience this added strain
on their already fragile financial situation, they can fall into a crisis or
even end up homeless. The Action Center’s prevention programs are
designed to help reduce this strain, offer help and assist clients in
continuing to work toward their pathway to self-sufficiency.
It is only through the unwavering and generous support of our donors
and volunteers that we were once again able to respond to this year’s
unprecedented need in the community and provide essential and
meaningful programs to our most vulnerable neighbors.
8
Then, Suzan had to have an emergency
delivery and only a few days after coming
home from the hospital, her brother said they
had to get out before the end of the week.
Suzan recalled, “I had no idea what we would
do.” “How could we be on the street with a
week-old baby and a four year old?”
On a Wednesday, Ray came to the Action
Center for the first time and luckily there was
a family room open at the shelter. They were
able to move into the shelter the next day.
Thankfully, they avoided having to sleep in
their car.
After just a short time in the shelter, Ray found
a job and began to save up money. Suzan
was healing, baby Daniel was doing very well
and Cy was happy to be a big brother. They
kept their spirits high and were thankful to
be together with a safe and warm place to
stay. After only three weeks, they had saved
enough money to move out into their very
own apartment and Ray was continually
picking up more hours at work. To date, they
are still doing very well.
2011 Annual Meeting Highlights
Foundation of the Year
Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation
Community Partner of the Year
The Farm Service Agency’s People’s Garden
The Johnson Foundation has
been there for our clients
through many seasons.
The Denver Federal Center reclaimed
a 20 x 30 plot from their campus and
turned it into a beautiful vegetable
garden in the summer of 2010.
Foundation President, Jack
Alexander who accepted the
award has been a wonderful
advocate for the less
fortunate here in Jefferson
County and all over the
state. The Foundation has
contributed almost $400,000 in support of our neighbors in
need. Our deepest thanks for your support and your
leadership!
They chose the Action Center as the
recipient of their fresh crops. Over the
year, they delivered more than 300 pounds of fresh food
to the Action Center pantry! The fruits and vegetables are
fresh-picked, dropped off within an hour, and land on the
tables of clients the same day!
The Business of the Year - Windish RV Center
It takes courage and strength of conviction for a business owner to give
away money in an economic downturn! Carolyn Windish Irwin is that
kind of leader, and her team at Windish RV Center is wonderfully
generous as well. Through the toughest times this year, their support
never wavered, they put their values into action to make sure we could
meet increased demand for services.
Windish RV sees the needs in their community, and they don’t just talk
about it – they take action to help their neighbors. Their support has
made an enormous difference this year in the lives of so many clients.
Volunteers of the Year
Judy and Don Dunlavy, Penny Graham, Bob Keating, Dennis
Lovaas, Roger Mattson, Susan Paddock, MaryAnn Rothenburger,
Bonnie Walker, Bill West, Shermita West and Tom Young
Employee of the Year Pedro F. Diaz
Client Services Coordinator is only
one of many hats that Pedro wears.
He goes above and beyond on a daily
basis as a strong advocate for his
clients, but also as a consistent team
leader, never seeking recognition for himself, but always
highlighting the accomplishments of his team.
“Everyday Pedro serves the mission delivering immediate
help with every interaction and always looking forward
to self-sufficiency for his clients, “ said a fellow counselor.
“His gifted sense of humor lightens the load on the busiest
days.”
Congratulations and thank you to these outstanding
volunteers for their many contributions and dedication to
the Action Center!

Donors Make Enormous Impact
Again this year, donors made an enormous impact on the Action
Center over the holidays through Colorado Gives Day. This
Community First Foundation initiative began in 2010 and allows
Coloradans the opportunity to maximize their holiday giving
through a matching gift from corporate partner, First Bank.
On December 4, 2011, the Action Center received a total of
$174,000 in online donations through CO Gives Day.
Once again, New West Physicians led the way with a
generous donation of $50,000 and we saw a significant
increase in the amount of individual online donors!
Click here to learn about CO Gives Day!
Volunteer Programs
This past year, more than 5,700 members of our community
volunteered with the Action Center. These extraordinary
individuals donated 87,700 hours of time, which equates to a
value of just over $1.9 million dollars and can be broken out
to $21.79 per hour in value to the Action Center.
Approximately 1,300 additional volunteers came on board
last year. The growth in volunteer programs comes
predominantly from an increase of businesses, organizations,
and churches bringing large groups of volunteers. The
Action Center offers a myriad of opportunities for any size
group. Additionally, Volunteer Programs increased
opportunities for individuals to utilize their professional
skill-set to serve the Action Center and an Ambassador program for volunteers to go out and introduce new members of
the community to the mission. Finally, the development of volunteer team leaders also expanded the breadth and depth of
volunteer opportunities.
For the staff, this dedicated time and these dedicated people are absolutely invaluable.
Without the heart, passion and determination of the more than 80 volunteers who walk in our doors each day, we would
not be able to serve the community with the resources and tools that many so desperately need.
From small children to scout troops and local students who volunteer to make our events run smoothly. To those who scurry
around in the food pantry to put together the five-day supplies of food and the phone desk volunteers who offer that first
word of hope. To those who greet donors on the dock and to the individuals who help behind the scenes – we say thank
you. To those who work directly with clients and to the dozens of groups – we say thank you. No amount of time, great or
minute is unrecognized or unappreciated. With these dedicated volunteers, no need goes unaddressed and no task is too
big or too small.
