From the Executive Director & Board President
As always, we begin with a word of thanks to all who supported our mission over the last year. The
generosity in the form of financial gifts, donations of food and clothing or gifts of time have all made
a tremendous difference in the work done at the Center to help families and individuals navigate
through trying circumstances. For 47 years, the Center has held close to its mission to “provide an
immediate response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self-sufficiency.” The community
has been extremely generous in its support of this organization and for that we are very grateful.
Over the last year, The Action Center continued to offer two tiers of service programming; the dropin Intervention Services Program and the appointment based Pathways to Self-Sufficiency Program
which features longer term case managed care. And of course, we could not accomplish our goals
without being partner-centric. We have more than a half-dozen close, long-standing partnerships to
provide housing, education, health and mental health services for our neighbors as they move across
the human services continuum.
Much of the year was spent completing the fundraising and construction processes for the new Program Services Building, located at 8745 W. 14th Avenue in Lakewood. Upon completion and dedication, the building officially opened for service in late April. As a result of the monies raised and the
construction efforts, we can fully serve both ends of our mission statement of “providing an immediate
response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self-sufficiency.”
This new facility allows clients to receive help with a variety of our services, all under one roof; from
intervention to shelter, Tenant Landlord hotline and of course the Self Sufficiency Pathways Program.
Wherever a person may fall on the self-sufficiency continuum, we have a program to optimally serve
our neighbors more effectively and in a dignified and respectful manner.

The Action Center provides an immediate
response to basic human needs and promotes
pathways to self-sufficiency.
It is through the following program areas that The Action Center gives help, provides hope
and builds dignity while breaking the cycle of poverty:
Providing Intervention & Prevention Services
Intervention services are designed to address the first half of our mission, which is basic human needs.
Prevention services help our clients regain or maintain stability with short-term or seasonal programs, such as
the School Supply Distribution, Thanksgiving Distribution and Santa Shop. Intervention and prevention services are intentionally limited so people don’t become dependent on our services. Our clients must be ready
and willing to make steps to improve the quality of their lives.
Creating Pathways to Self-Sufficiency
Every client must meet with a specially trained Volunteer Client Advocate or staff Case Manager prior to
receiving any services. We don’t want to just put a band-aid on issues - we want to get to the root of what
is causing their financial instability, with the ultimate goal being self-sufficiency. This intervention service is
the first stepping stone to address the long-term needs of our clients and their potential placement in our
Self-Sufficiency Pathways Program.
Building Community Partnerships
The Action Center connects clients to other resources, onsite, to address barrier issues (education, public benefit programs, mental health and health care) all related to loving toward self-sufficiency. We connect people
to in-house partnerships with local agencies including Red Rocks Community College, Jefferson County Human Services, Jefferson Center for Mental Health, Metro Community Network Provider, just to name a few.
Tomorrow is Today
Construction
For the past four years, The Action Center has been investing
in a better tomorrow. A Capital Campaign was launched in
the spring of 2011 to turn the existing Cottonwood I building
into the Program Services Building - a building that would
better serve the needs of our clients. The building was completed in the spring of 2015, after 12 months of construction
and five years of planning.

Stardust Mural
The Stardust mural that graces the front of the Program Services Building was designed and created by Martha
Pinkard Williams of Artamation. The design represents clients being given a “hand up” through the services
and programs provided at The Action Center, and eventually moving towards self-sufficiency. “In the design I
didn’t want to put anyone down — everyone gets in a place where they need some help — and I wanted it to
be uplifting for the community,” says Martha. The mural was gifted by 40 West Arts District and is included in
the “Colorfax” mural program.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Prior to opening the Program Services Building to the community, The Action Center hosted a Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony to give major donors and supporters of the Capital Campaign a sneak peek at the new building.
Among those who spoke about their involvement in the project were Representative Ed Perlmutter; Bill Marino,
Executive Director of 40 West Arts District; Leslie Hord, Board President; Jim Pinkard, Pinkard Construction;
Peter Ewers, Ewers Architecture; Peggy Jennings, Community First Foundation Board Chair; Casey Tighe, Jefferson County Commissioner; Adam Paul, Lakewood Mayor Pro Tem; and Mag Strittmatter, Executive Director
of The Action Center.
Open to the Community
The Program Services Building opened its doors to the community on April 21, 2015. The first floor of the newly
renovated building is designated for intervention services, including the self-select grocery, clothing area and
household item area. The second floor is dedicated to case management staff and volunteer client advocates
within areas provided to counsel clients for intervention programs. Expanded on-site partnerships are designed
to remove service access barriers.
Self-Select Grocery
The Program Services Building offers dedicated space for an industrystandard self-select grocery which allows clients to choose the food they
know their families will enjoy. The Action Center’s Food Rescue Program “rescues” fresh food from Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, and Whole Foods which is then
stocked in the grocery for clients to choose from. The utilization of USDA’s
Choose My Plate puts emphasis on higher nutritional offerings provided in
the grocery which includes fruit, vegetables, dairy, grains and protein sources,
complimented by canned and dry foods. Clients can select a five-day supply
of groceries up to six times a year.
Clothing & Household Items
Double racks and bright light fixtures were installed in the clothing
area for easy shopping. Shoe racks
provide better organization. Clients
can select up to 50 items of clothing, depending on their family size.
The household item area provides
greater space for storage, making it
easier for volunteers to fulfill client
orders.
Case Management
The second floor is dedicated to Intervention and Self-Sufficiency Pathways Program staff and services.
This provides additional space for
Self-Sufficiency Pathways Program
case managers, as well as expanded
space for Intervention Program volunteer client advocates. There are
also offices for representatives from
community partners, such as Red
Rocks Community College.

Preventative Programs
School Supply Distribution
The Action Center was able to allocate necessary school supplies to more than 5,000 Jefferson County students
in need at the annual School Supply Distribution in 2014. Cardel Homes was the lead financial sponsor of the
distribution and supplied 4,000 backpacks to every student in attendance. This was significant because it was the
first time in history each child was able to receive a backpack from the distribution.
This vital school supply program prevents families from making difficult decisions that would put them further in
crisis. It is estimated that school supplies cost an average of $90 per child.
Thanksgiving Distribution
The Thanksgiving Food program eases the strain on fragile finances and prevents families from falling further into a crisis.
Unlike many other Thanksgiving distributions, The Action Center allows registered clients to stay warm in their cars while
400+ volunteers pack their vehicles with boxed holiday meals.
In 2014, 1,900 households received a box full of all the “fixin’s” needed to have a traditional holiday meal, including
potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy and pie. Additionally, clients received a voucher to get a turkey or ham at a local
King Soopers.
Santa Shop
Nearly 1,500 households were served at the 2014 Santa Shop, which took place at Faith Mountain. Parents and guardians
were allowed to pick out one large toy, one small toy, a stuffed animal, board game, stocking stuffers and books for each
child in their family.
The Santa Shop is special in the fact that parents and guardians personally shop for their children’s holiday toys - after all,
no one knows a child better than their parent! A staggering 24,000 toys were collected for this year’s distribution, which
ultimately provided 3,700 children with holiday gifts.
Foundation of the Year
For nearly 40 years, Community First Foundation has been bringing donors and nonprofit organizations together by offering financial support and educational opportunities to strengthen nonprofits. They also fund community programs, inspire philanthropy and assist individuals and businesses with charitable giving. ColoradoGives.
org, the year-round, online giving website, has raised more than $81 million for Colorado nonprofits since 2007.
Community First Foundation has been especially generous and supportive of The Action Center mission with
many financial gifts over the years. But none more impressive than the recent $500,000 matching grant to complete phase one of the capital campaign project. This amazing award matches all new gifts and pledges, dollar
for dollar! Because of the help from Community First Foundation, we will finish with construction and open to
the public in early 2015! We are so thankful and grateful for this outstanding community partner.
Business of the Year
Cardel Homes
Cardel Homes and their employees are dedicated to enriching lives in our community. After committing to
a lead $25,000 financial special-event sponsorship over the past two years, and volunteering at our seasonal
events, they still went above and beyond for our neighbors in need. In August 2014, they donated 4,000 backpacks to our school supply distribution event and as a result, made sure that every child receiving school supplies also received a backpack for their new school year. The Action Center is truly thankful for their support of
our mission, and as a Cardel Homes employee shared “We know what a great organization The Action Center
is to work with.”
Employee of the Year
Marilyn Katapodes
Marilyn Katapodes has been with The Action Center since June of 2011, first as Office Manager but moved to
Finance Manager in 2012. Marilyn took on the challenge of her new role by applying her impressive financial
skills and background. Over the past year she has made significant contributions to the agency’s financial processes and procedures especially as it related to budgeting, monthly financials and the annual audit. She worked
tirelessly to ensure that aspects of the accounting department were complete and correct, despite being short
staffed. Her dedication to the organization and mission was displayed through her late nights and weekends to
complete projects ahead of deadlines.
As a result of her hard work, the financial processes are stronger and more detailed. This is significant, in that,
the organization has been engaged in multiple financial campaigns simultaneously. Working mostly behind the
scenes, Marilyn’s contributions to The Action Center are not always on public display. But without her hard work
and tenacity, the agency would not be where it is today.
Volunteers
Volunteers played a critical role in The Action Center’s move to the Program Services Building. During the
month of April, volunteers donated 7,103 hours of time in order to move the old Client Services into the new
Program Services Building. 1,072 individual volunteers and 267 groups volunteered at The Action Center during
the 2015 fiscal year. Thank you to your outstanding dedication to The Action Center!
