Originally from Canada, he completed his B.M. at the University of Western Ontario and his M.M. and D.M. in Performance and Literature from Indiana University. He was recently invited to join the music faculty at Patrick Henry College, where he serves as an adjunct professor of music theory and instructional music. He also performs as a violist with the Washington Bach Consort and has played with a number of period instrument ensembles in the D.C. area. Dr. McCormick is a contributor to new research in the historical performance practice of music of Baroque era. He specializes in the performance of the viola d’amore, an unusual baroque instrument with sympathetic strings. An excerpt of his doctoral thesis ‘Pur al fin Gentil Viola’ was published in the Newsletter of the Viola d’Amore Society of America. One of his performances, from the National Gallery in Ottawa with members of the Canadian group Tafelmusik, was broadcast nationally by CBC radio. He has also performed as a viola d’amore soloist with the Richmond Symphony, with the Penn State University Baroque Orchestra, and for the annual National Cathedral performance of Bach’s St. John Passion. Dr. McCormick, and his wife Rebekah are founders of the Second Fiddle Farm, a 12-acre facility in Loudoun County, which is home to two horses, three sheep, and seven chickens. Their spunky seven-year-old daughter, Norah, and younger brother, Hugh, keep Doc and Rebekah filled with joy when he is not teaching his Langley Orchestra students. Orchestra Director Ms. Elizabeth Leung Langley High School Freshman Ms. Elizabeth Leung began playing Cooper Middle School the violin at the age of 5. She grew up in Potomac, Maryland and participated in all the youth orchestras that she could including Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra (MCYO), All-State, Philharmonic Orchestra. She also was the manager and one of the violinists for the MCYO string quartet which performed everywhere from weddings, golf tournaments, master classes, and at the White House. She held an internship at Cabin John Middle School in Maryland where she coached sectionals and chamber music. She also earned a spot with the National Symphony Orchestra Young Associates Program, where she observed National Symphony rehearsals. Ms. Leung graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University with her Bachelors of Music Education. While at Indiana University, she was a member of the student chapters of the National Association for Music Education, and the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Ms. Leung presented with her colleagues at the National Convention. Currently, Ms. Leung teaches orchestra both at Langley High School and Cooper Middle School, while managing the Young Artists Orchestra for MCYO. HARDING The 2014 White House Christmas ornament honors the administration of Warren G. Harding, who served as the twenty-ninth president of the United States from 1921 to 1923. As a young boy, Harding dreamed of being a locomotive engineer—a wish that was to come true for 51 minutes when as president, he took over the controls on the Alaskan railroad during the “Voyage of Understanding,” his famous transcontinental speaking and sightseeing tour. The Presidential Special, the train that carried President Harding west at the outset of his ambitious voyage and that would tragically carry his casket back east following his sudden death, just two months later, is the inspiration for our 2014 ornament. Decorated with gold tones and enamel finishes, the 33rd annual White House Christmas Ornament is our first ornament to be comprised of two pieces, which can be hung as two separate ornaments or linked together. The locomotive is a detailed miniature replica of one of several steam-powered locomotives that pulled the Presidential Special; it is attached to the coal car that held its fuel. The other miniature car is the Superb, the president’s private heavyweight Pullman car. The last car on the Special, the Superb was outfitted with a public address system. $22.00 Please make checks payable to: Langley Orchestra Society Contact : Michelle Mort Ranta [email protected] Thank you very much for supporting our program!
