Orchestra Director
Dr. Scott McCormick
Langley High School
Dr. McCormick (aka ”Doc” to his
students) is in his 13th year of teaching with the
Fairfax County Public school system as director of the orchestral program at
Langley. Originally from Canada, he completed his B.M. at the University of
Western Ontario and his M.M. and D.M. in Performance and Literature from
Indiana University. He was recently invited to join the music faculty at Patrick
Henry College, where he serves as an adjunct professor of music theory and
instructional music. He also performs as a violist with the Washington Bach
Consort and has played with a number of period instrument ensembles in the
D.C. area.
Dr. McCormick is a contributor to new research in the historical
performance practice of music of Baroque era. He specializes in the performance
of the viola d’amore, an unusual baroque instrument with sympathetic strings. An
excerpt of his doctoral thesis ‘Pur al fin Gentil Viola’ was published in the
Newsletter of the Viola d’Amore Society of America. One of his performances,
from the National Gallery in Ottawa with members of the Canadian group
Tafelmusik, was broadcast nationally by CBC radio. He has also performed as a
viola d’amore soloist with the Richmond Symphony, with the Penn State
University Baroque Orchestra, and for the annual National Cathedral performance
of Bach’s St. John Passion.
Dr. McCormick, and his wife Rebekah are founders of the Second Fiddle
Farm, a 12-acre facility in Loudoun County, which is home to two horses, three
sheep, and seven chickens. Their spunky six-year-old daughter, Norah, and
younger brother, Hugh, keep Doc and Rebekah filled with joy when he is not
teaching his Langley Orchestra students.
Orchestra Director
Ms. Bo-Min Son
Cooper Middle School
Langley High School Freshman
Ms. Bo-Min Son, a proud alumna of Cooper
MS and Langley HS, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University
with a Bachelor of Music and is currently working towards her Masters in
Music Education at George Mason University. Ms. Son started her music
training early on the piano, but decided that the cello was her choice of
instrument at the age of 11. Since then, she has held principal roles in
American Youth Philharmonic, Boston University Chamber Orchestra and
was a fellow member of National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship
Program, where she received a full scholarship to pursue her musical training.
She also performed and featured as a soloist at multiple venues such as
Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall and The Kennedy Center. She obtained
numerous awards from a number of competitions including a Grand Prize
from the Third International New Praise for Piano and Strings. She has
participated in master classes with Alban Gerhardt, Paul Katz, Norman Fisher
and Joshua Gordon. Her principal teachers include Dorothy Amarandos,
Glenn Garlick of National Symphony Orchestra and Marc Johnson, formerly
with Vermeer Quartet.
Busy maintaining her career as a cellist, conductor and educator, Ms. Son
currently directs and oversees over 200 secondary strings students daily at
Cooper Middle School and Langley High School in McLean, VA. In addition
to teaching, Ms. Son enjoys being a music coach in the community and has a
thriving private cello studio that includes a wide range of students. She
continues to sustain her love for playing the cello by performing in the
McLean Orchestra. When she’s not playing or teaching, she loves to travel.
District XII Orchestra Assessment
Each year, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association organizes
assessments for all the music programs in Virginia public schools. In each
area, a panel of three professional adjudicators is assembled to critique the
participating ensembles and judge them against state standards for
excellence in performance, sight-reading, musicianship and orchestral skills.
Langley High School and Cooper Middle School are members of District
XII, which includes schools from the northern region of Fairfax County and
neighboring Arlington County. This year’s VBODA Assessment will
include more than 50 orchestras and over 3,000 students, making it among
the largest and most competitive music festivals in the USA. It has grown so
large that the event has been split into two divisions. The High School
portion will be held at South Lakes High School on March 21st and 22nd.
The Middle School entries will be hosted by James Madison High School on
March 14th and 15th.
This year, the Cooper Concert Orchestra will be presenting at the Grade III
level and the Chamber Orchestra will perform at the Grade IV level.
Langley will be preparing the Sophomore Orchestra to compete at the
Grade V level and the Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the highest
level of competition, Grade VI. They will attempt to qualify for the
prestigious Blue Ribbon Award for Music. This honor is achieved by only a
handful of Virginia schools, and our department was honored to receive this
award each of the past four years.
We hope that every orchestra family will do their part to ensure that our
musicians arrive on time and prepared to represent our pyramid in
competition, so please come out to cheer on our Saxons and to hear some of
the other excellent orchestras in our community.

The Cherokee School
The Cherokee School is a special education elementary school in Orlando. Langley
Orchestra students presented information about music and demonstrated their
instruments in classroom sessions designed by Langley Orchestra parent, Susan
McQuade. They also performed two concerts followed by piano solos from
sophomores, Theron Masters and Lyric Yu. The Cherokee students were captivated
by the music and presentations; and the Administrators expressed appreciation for the
time and impact that the Orchestras had on their elementary students. Many of our
Langley Orchestra students also acknowledged the value of the connection that they
had with many of the Cherokee students. It was a special way to end a trip to the
wonderful World of Disney and the magical World of Harry Potter.
