Congregation Beth Shalom Education Offerings
"Where Jewish education is neglected, the whole content of Judaism is reduced to
merely an awareness of anti-Semitism. Judaism ceases then to be a civilization, and
becomes a complex."
- Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan
Learning in Leawood
Bereshit I: The first 20 Generations
Wednesday Evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm,
at a home in Leawood beginning
November 5th.
Rabbi Glickman will be teaching
this 10 session class in collaboration with Melton@HBHA. The
curriculum is an in-depth text study written by scholars
from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The stories take us
from the universal tales of the creation of the world to the
beginnings of the Jewish people. The themes of family and
faith, honor and dishonor, passion and power provide a
rich exploration of our people and ourselves. No Hebrew
knowledge necessary. Space is limited, and there are limited scholarships available. To register, please contact Rabbi
Doug Alpert at [email protected]. Cost: $190.

engaging and interactive Talmud class (no
Hebrew required) once a month at a location near downtown Kansas City. Class
begins on Wednesday, November 12, and
the first class will be held at the offices of

ongoing, monthly program
that takes place on every third

where the difference of opinions is respected and questions
are encouraged. No prior experience is required, and everybody is welcome to join. The next session will take place
on November 15, to discuss Parashat Chayei Sara from the

From the Rabbi’s Study
The Difference between 1933 and Now
I try not to focus my
Jewish identity or vision
on reacting to anti-Semitism. Rather, I usually
think that the greatest
weapon against antiSemitism is not anti-anti-Semitism,
but Pro-Semitism (Jewishly positive
education and engagement).
However, it is impossible to
ignore the rise of anti-Semitism both
in Europe and in America. A couple of
the most obvious examples are the violence in Paris this summer, the vocally
anti-Semitic protests in Germany, and
the anti-Semitic graffiti on campuses
over the past High Holidays. Additionally, if you scratch beneath the
surface of the Boycott, Divestment
and Sanctions Movement, you will see
a cacophony of anti-Semitic tropes.
It is easy to see the rise of European anti-Semitism, in particular,
as déjà vu. However, there are two
fundamentally different realities that
exist today that did not in 1933. I
spoke about both of them on the High
Holidays. The first is the fundamental
importance of the State of Israel, and
the second is the unprecedented positive relationships that exist in America
between the Jewish community and
our neighbors.
Over four hundred Jews from
Paris made Aliyah to Israel this summer. It is impossible to minimize the
importance of the role the State of Israel plays as being a safe haven to any
Jew from any nation. Also, we have
seen officials in every community both
in America and abroad loudly condemn and counter any anti-Semitic
acts that occur.
These two differences represent a
marked difference between the world
now and the world seventy years ago.
However, we must remain vigilant
against anti-Semitism, because we
are the world’s guard for this unique
hatred.

Our Strategic Plan Creates a Kehillah
Like many organizations, CBS has a strategic
plan. Unlike many organizations, however, our
strategic plan is actually
governing our actions and
programs and drives our budget.
Members of our congregation want
meaningful experiences of prayer and
spirituality, congregational learning,
and a sense of community - fulfilling
these three goals is our strategic plan.
I’ve become energized by how
many opportunities we have created
for ourselves to connect with our shul,
how many “doorways” we have into
our sacred community, our kehillah,
Congregation Beth Shalom.
Some congregants engage in
prayer and spirituality at Kabbalat
Shabbat services on Friday nights,
while many come to the main sanctu-
ary service on Shabbat morning, and
others choose the Library Minyan.
Tot Shabbat comes together once a
month, as does a new community
of families of Tot Shabbat “graduates” called Shabbat Kids Club. Every
morning and evening we have a
minyan at Village Shalom during the
week. The White Theater was filled
with worshippers on Rosh HaShanah,
and so was the Social Hall – two different approaches to our most sacred
experiences.
We offer multiple opportunities for congregational learning, many
of which are targeted to specific age
groups. Dozens of families participate
in Beth Shalom’s Rose Family Early
Childhood Education program, as
well as the Polsky Religious School,
and USY. Downtown Talmud Jam is
a regular community, as is the Rabbi’s
Sisterhood Peltzman class for adult
education, and Shabbat Minchah “Locavort” meets each week to learn with
Rabbi Glickman.
Sisterhood is our oldest community, while Boy Scout Troop 61
is our second oldest. Men’s Club is
active and fun again. Steppin’ Out is
for congregants of a certain age, and
Kiddush Corps includes all ages. And
more - these are how we create a sense
of community for ourselves.
As we transition into 5775, let’s
reflect on what we value. Where do
we experience meaningful prayer and
spirituality? Where do we benefit from
Jewish learning? In which community
of our kehillah, do we participate?
Which doorway brings us into our
sacred community, the kehillah we are
proud to call Beth Shalom?

Curriculum Update
Shalom! Now that
the holidays are a distant
memory, we are hard at
work at PRS. The Etgar
Curriculum is being used in third and
fourth grades and in fifth and sixth
grades to look carefully at the Hebrew
calendar and at our sacred texts. In the
seventh grades, students are pursuing
their studies of the life cycle and the
Holocaust and values within both.
In all grades, third through seventh,
students continue to work on their
Hebrew reading skills and have begun
to work on their davening (prayerleading) skills.
I want to dedicate a few lines
to a crisis in our community and ask
your help to remedy this crisis. The
Food Pantry at the JCC is short tens
of thousands of pounds of food for
this time of year. They desperately
need canned goods; soups, tuna, fruits
and vegetables. There is also a need
for boxed macaroni, peanut butter,
boxes of rice and cereal. Please consider sending food with your child to
Hebrew School and at the end of each
week, we will bring what we have collected to the JCC. Thank you so much
for your generosity.

Beth Shalom Calendar 2014-2015/ 5775 Correction
The Beth Shalom building at 95th
and Wornall was demolished a number of
weeks ago. I am still hearing laments and
comments about how much better the past
was. Recently, I was skimming the Beth
Shalom Diamond Book celebrating our
75th anniversary, and I learned that life at Beth Shalom
has not always been smooth or wonderful. In the past we
have had major problems and overcome them through
the efforts of both our congregants and clergy. Our
congregation is wherever we come together to worship,
to learn, to socialize, to meet. The past is the past. The
future is ours to embrace and make whatever we want it
to be.
We sincerely apologize to the following people for errors in their listing in the Beth Shalom Calendar:
Men's Club Calendar
November 1: Couples Dinner
December 14: Chiefs Watch
Party
January 6: Dinner and Poker
January 24: Missouri Mavericks
Game
March 3: Sweet 16 Watch Party

Potato Kugel by Karen Berger
Line a bowl with cheesecloth. Peel, chop and process 4
Idaho potatoes (or grate) the potatoes and place in cheesecloth. Squeeze the water out of the potatoes. Discard water.
Add:
3 Eggs
¼ C Matzah meal or Panko Bread
Crumbs
½ t Baking powder
1T Chicken soup mix
¼ C Oil
Pepper
Salt (at end because it turns the potatoes brown)
Bake in an 8 inch or brownie size glass dish at 350 degrees
for 1 hour or until brown around edges. Enjoy!
Yale Winston of Troop 61, recently completed his Eagle Project at Kehilath Israel Synagogue by sprucing
up their playground. Pictured are some of those that helped Yale. Anyone interested in Troop 61, sponsored by
Congregation Beth Shalom, may contact us at [email protected].
