2015 Annual Report - Episcopal Charities of New York
Annual Report
2015
Our Mission
Transforming the lives of those in need.
Our Work
• We fight hunger through food pantries and community kitchens;
• We strengthen communities through skills-building programs that
offer a path to success for the unemployed, recent immigrants and
the formerly incarcerated re-entering society;
• We protect the most vulnerable through health and wellness
programs that improve quality of life for senior citizens, the
homebound, children with special needs and recovering substance
abusers;
• We create opportunities for the next generation through children’s
arts, academic enrichment and summer recreation programs.
In the true spirit of outreach, every program is free of
religious content, welcoming one and all.
A Letter from the Bishop and the President
Dear Friends,
Thank you for sharing in the mission of Episcopal Charities through your support and
generosity. We are very grateful to have you as a partner as we work to transform the lives
of those in need.
Within the pages of this Annual Report is information regarding the year’s activities and
accomplishments. We’re delighted to note that 2015 was the most successful fundraising
year in our history, highlighted by a record-setting Tribute Dinner. This success was but a
means to a far greater end … making help, hope and opportunity available through the 99
parish-sponsored programs that received support during the year.
In all, the lives of 880,000 New Yorkers were touched by programs funded and assisted
by Episcopal Charities. More than 6.7 million meals were provided to New Yorkers in need
of nutritional assistance. After-school, weekend and summer programs enabled more
than 3,200 children to develop academic strengths, refine artistic talents, enjoy the great
outdoors and just plain have fun. Other programs helped meet the specialized needs of
neighbors ranging from homebound senior citizens to children on the autism spectrum.
As you read through the details contained in this Annual Report, please know that we
extend our gratitude to each and every contributor and volunteer. We are very mindful
that our success depends upon collective effort and that your caring and compassion are
at the heart of it all.
With gratitude,
The Rt. Rev. Andrew M L Dietsche
Bishop of New York
John Talty

2015 Tribute Dinner
O
n Wednesday, December 2nd,
Episcopal Charities held its annual
Tribute Dinner at the Cathedral of
St. John the Divine and welcomed nearly
700 guests. The dinner raised $1.2 million
to fund the 99 programs supported by
Episcopal Charities in 2015.
Episcopal Charities was pleased to honor
Jeffrey M. Peek and Anthony J. Walton.
Both of our honored guests offered
inspirational remarks that lent the evening
a true spirit of fellowship and a call to
provide help, and hope, to those in need.
The Dinner Chairs were Martin J. Sullivan
and Peter W. Keller. Martin Sullivan also
served as Master of Ceremonies.
brings together children from Bronxville,
Mount Vernon and Eastchester and has
received funding from Episcopal Charities
since the program’s founding in 2005.
In addition, an inspirational story of
personal transformation was offered by
Edgar Palacios, a former participant in the
St. Ann’s, Bronx, after-school and Freedom
School programs.
Our thanks go to Jeff Peek, Tony Walton,
and to all those who supported the event.
A highlight of the evening was an
outstanding performance by Young
at Arts, which is a program of Christ
Church in Bronxville. Young at Arts

Episcopal Charities is proud of its participation in the Better Business
Bureau Charity Seal Program, an immediate and easily recognizable
symbol to donors that our organization has met the 20 Standards
for Charity Accountability. These standards evaluate charities for
financial accountability, governance and oversight, effectiveness
measures, fundraising and informational materials.
Transforming Lives
Transforming the lives of those in need. It’s more than our mission statement. It is a commitment
shared by Episcopal Charities’ Board of Directors, donors, staff, volunteers and parish-sponsored
programs as we reach out to New Yorkers in need.
Whether you offer financial support or get involved in a hands-on manner, we invite you to
take an active role in making life better for many thousands of those less fortunate. Your
participation is vitally needed, most welcomed and greatly appreciated!
Ways to Help
You can help others by partnering with Episcopal Charities in one of the following ways:
• Donate. Every gift matters and is truly appreciated.
• Volunteer. Lend an hour of your time to tutor a child or serve a meal. Or commit to a more
specialized volunteer opportunity. Your participation is welcomed.
• Attend an event. All special-event proceeds go directly toward supporting our programs.
• Give through your corporation. Many corporations help support Episcopal Charities
through matching-gift programs, event attendance and employee-recommended grants.
• Include Episcopal Charities in your will. You can help neighbors in need for many years to
come by including Episcopal Charities in your estate planning.
