Commodore’s Corner

Well, I’m six (6)
months into
my year as
Commodore.
It has gone so
fast!
I can’t thank the volunteers enough
for all they do. We couldn’t function
without them.
To the people that assisted me with my
Commodore’s Ball: Holly, April, Vickie
& Byron, Norie & Jerry, I can’t thank
you enough.
To the volunteers that made my
Opening Day so special, I thank you:
April & Hutch, Vickie & Byron, Lin
and Julie for the food, the First Mates,
Night Watch, Norie for my invocation,
Dyan Beven for putting the entire event
together and no one could forget Dave
Barrette for his singing of America the
Beautiful and God Bless America. To
Bob and Kari for their immense help,
the Board of Directors and the Long
Range Planning Committee, I could not
do it without you.
Those are just some of the many
volunteers that make the Club what it
is today. Please forgive me if I didn’t
name you personally.
The Christmas Boat Parade Committee
is now planning the 24th Annual KHYC
Boat Parade. New Members, please
step up and volunteer to assist with the
planning. Joan Smith could use some
new blood with different ideas on the
committee. Last year there were 68
paddle boarders in the parade. This
year we anticipate even more!
The Staff Commodores and the Fleets
had their meeting and came up with
their proposed slate of Officers and
Directors for next year:
Bob Duncan, Commodore
Kari Keidser, Vice Commodore
Gail Keswater, Rear Commodore.
The new Director Nominees are:

Whilden; and, at the General Meeting,

The racing
season is
definitely
underway.
In July there are two exciting
events. First up is the Tom Collier
Regatta on July 11th. It will have
an inverted start with boats from
14ft to70 ft. consisting of monohulls
and multihulls. After the race and
in conjunction with the awards
ceremony there will be an auction
with the proceeds going to the Tom
Collier Lab Cancer Research at
Cedars Sinai. This will be a fun
filled event.
Next up is the 43rd annual Santa
Barbara to King Harbor Race on
July 24th and 25th. The race starts in
Santa Barbara at noon and finishes
in King Harbor between 5:00 Friday
and into the afternoon on Saturday.
It all depends on the wind!
Friday night’s activities will include
the Brian Sisson Trio, starting at
9:00PM. Saturday will follow with
appetizers and music by Michael
Forbes starting at 3:00PM and
the awards are at 4:00PM. The
culmination of the event will be the
famous Shrimp Feed on Saturday
night. There will be two seatings,
the first at 6:00PM and the second at
7:30 PM.
More exciting racing includes:
The Dingy Racing Series that is very
active on Wednesday nights.
Twilight Racing is every Thursday
except the Thursday before the
Santa Barbara Race.
Cruising Handicap Racing Fleet
(CHRF) Races are on selected
Sundays throughout the summer.
As you can see we are organizing,
encouraging and sponsoring
yachting and yacht racing in and
about the waters of Southern
California.

At the June General Membership Meeting, member Ron Schmid made a floor nomination for
Kelly McMartin as Rear Commodore, and Kelly accepted this floor nomination, so Kelly is
now also a candidate for Rear Commodore in 2016.
Nominations for our 2016 Flag Officers and Directors remain open, and will be closed during
our August 2015 General Membership Meeting. Prior to the nominations being closed,
additional nominations from the floor can be made at that meeting. Please remember that
there will be no General Membership Meeting in the month of July.
Our By-Laws mandate that election of our Flag Officers and Board Members be conducted at
the September General Membership Meeting. With at least one nomination from the floor
already made, a written ballot vote will be conducted at our September General Membership
Meeting to determine which candidates are elected.

Night Watch Fleet

The NWF team was well represented
at the very successful Sea Fair in May.
Many thanks to all who volunteered
their time and efforts!
There may still be a few tickets left
to the Monty Python’s Spamalot
performance at the Hollywood Bowl
on August 2nd. The cost is $36/person,
which includes the show ticket and
bus transportation to/from Wilson
Park in Torrance. Wendy Doeh
and Lee White are in charge of this
adventure.
CJ Krimm has also planned another
August outing for the group. We
will be touring the Point Vicente
Lighthouse and the Interpretive
Center on Saturday, August 22nd
at 1000 hours. Bring your own
picnic lunch as we plan to take full
advantage of the available picnic areas
after the tour; the views from the bluff
are spectacular! Please contact CJ to
sign up if you haven’t already.
Our July 7th meeting will be a
barbecue dinner at 1900 hours, with
the cocktail hour starting at 1800.
Spouses and friends are welcome!
Please bring your entrée to grill and
a side dish to share. Skipper Linda
promises that no official business will
actually take place!

First Mates

The First Mates brought on summer
with a beach themed luncheon
created by Kathy Smith, CJ Krimm,
and Paralee Hanson. Our galley
staff served flavorful chicken
salad sandwiches, cole slaw, and
watermelon, with Dove bars for
dessert. Delicious!
The Sea Fair was a huge success
thanks to the many volunteers. First
Mates manned the reception desk and
helped out with the life vests. A good
time was had by all!
The Tom Collier Regatta will take
place on July 17th. There will be
a raffle and live auction. We voted
to donate $1,000 to Cedars Sinai in
memory of Tom Collier.
First Mates’ Game Day will be held
on Wednesday, August 5th. All
KHYC members and their guests are
welcome. We will be playing Mexican
Train, Island Dominoes, Bridge,
Bunco, Scrabble, Black Jack and
Poker. Cocktails are at 11:30 as usual.
Lunch is at 12:00. The games are from
1 to 3:30 PM with prizes and the raffle
to follow. Cost is $25 in advance or
$28 at the door. This includes lunch,
a beverage, dessert, games and prizes.
You can make a reservation with the
club office and pay at the door.

Book Club.

“ We are not
alone. And we
never have
been”
Is the subject matter of the book we
read for the June meeting: “Our
Occulted History” by Jim Marrs.
Occulted, simply means: Hidden.
A secret not divulged. From Middle
French: occulte And directly from
Latin: occultus. Hidden. Concealed
secret covered over. It has nothing
to do with Magic, the Supernatural
or Vampires, like some people were
saying after reading the name of the
book, in the last couple of Telltale
issues. The truth is out there; and,
with this kind of research, which
encourages this kind of thinking, we
might at last, bring it into the light.
What Jim Marrs points out in
his book, is that almost all of the
significant Archeological ruins and
artifacts around the world, show
signs, of having been built with
such advanced technology, that
even today, we would not be able
to match it. And, that they were
built at a time when we know that
Homo Erectus was still at a stage of
development below farming.
Homo Sapiens appeared on Earth
long after the Pyramids of Egypt,
Machupichu and Teotihuacan
were built. The massive slabs of
rectangular rocks of the Baalbeck
platform and the
“huge” flat
rectangular rock
where
the Greeks
built
the Parthenon
were already
there. Even they
could not explain
where the rocks came
from.
Such is the evidence
in plain
sight, of a human history that our
institutions of higher learning
have chosen to ignore and that
world governments, NASA and other

modern institutions are only too
happy to perpetuate. Why?! He asks.
Do they know something that we
don’t know? Authors such as Jim
Marrs, Arthur C. Clark, Rupert
Sheldrake, Zecharia Sitchin, Isaac
Asimov and many other awardwinning writers and journalists,
who have had the courage to
publish books with opinions out of
the main stream of the Scientific
Establishment, are getting closer to
exposing the truth.
They have rocked the proverbial boat
to get our thinking going in the right
direction. Kind of in the tradition of
Nicolaus Copernicus, who had the
temerity to put forth the theory that
the Sun is at rest in the center of the
Solar System, and that the Earth,
spinning on its axis, also revolves
annually around the Sun. Or in the
tradition of Galileo Galilei, who had
the guts to put forward a number of
scientific insights that contradicted
the Church’s Bible dominated
thinking of his time; and, that laid
the foundation for future science
to investigate the laws of motion
and to improve on the design of the
telescope, a daring and revolutionary
instrument, which later, led him
to question the current belief of his
time, that all the stars revolved
around the Earth.
Galileo wrote and published his
Dialogues in 1632, which prompted
Pope Urban VIII to issue an order
almost immediately, to prevent the
publisher from printing more copies.
But, it had already been printed in
Italian, not in Latin like Copernicus’
works, so all of Italy’s intellectuals
were able to read and think about it.
The original title had been: Dialogue
on the Ebb and Flow of the Sea, but it
was changed so it would not appear
that Galileo was pushing the fact
that the tides supported his opinion.
The Catholic Church, persecuted
scientists who formed theories that
the Church deemed heretical; and,
forbade people from reading any
books in those subjects! A type of
war between science and religion was
in play in those days, even as it still
is today, in The Flat Earth Society.

The Ocean Cleanup has developed the world’s first feasible method to clean up half of the so-called Great
Pacific Garbage Patch in 10 years’ time. But how many tons of garbage will be cleaned up? In order to determine
the amount of plastic in the patch, we are organizing the largest ocean plastic expedition in history. During
August this year, we will be crossing the Garbage Patch from Hawaii to California, with up to 50 boats in parallel.
And you can be part of this historic event.

Sanguinetti Regatta
Luke Pond, Emma Tallman,
Audrey Mahowald, and Taft
Buckley sailed in the Sanguinetti
Team Race Regatta at Cal Yacht
Club. The team had worked
really hard going into the regatta,
attending several clinics and
practicing with Coach Abby. It all
paid off, and the team tied with
Team SBYC for first place with 11
wins and 4 losses after two days
of racing. Team SBYC won the
tie breaker and claimed the win.

On the same night, the inaugural
Rolling Hills Prep Sailing Team
was honored at the RHP Sports
Banquet. Coach Abby attended
with the team. Congratulations to
Cade Morris, Cameron Nelligan,
Drea Keswater and Margot Okuno
on their successful first season.

The Beginner Optimist classes,
especially, are starting to really
fill up. Sessions 2 and 3 still
have room, but register your child
today to guarantee their spot. If
your beginner sailor wants to sail
Session 4, we suggest the Basic
CFJ class and the Adventure
Sailing class.

Saturdays from 11:00 AM-2:00
PM and Mondays from 5:30-8:30
PM. Purchase a lesson package
for this ongoing class, and sign
up for lessons as your schedule
permits. The wind has been great
this season, so now is the time to
