CLC Foundation Annual Report
College Lake County 2014/2015 ANNUAL REPORT OUR MISSION The College of Lake County Foundation raises money to fund scholarships and grants that provide our students with an opportunity for a better future. Through these efforts, we strengthen the vitality and well-being of the diverse communities we serve. College of Lake County College 19351 West Washington Street Grayslake, Illinois 60030-1198 Lake County www.clcillinois.edu 847.543.2091 v 847.223.2908 f Letter from the Foundation Board Chair When I am asked how I became involved with the College of Lake County, I answer with several reasons: it offered one of my children a start to an advanced degree and successful career; its excellent training programs and resources have been a boon to the Lake County business community; it has given me the opportunity to work with visionary leaders who share a passion for being agents of change rather than passive observers; and it is an indispensable asset for Lake County students with the desire to achieve a higher education without the burden of debt. CLC’s affordable tuition and fees puts education within reach of thousands of intelligent, hard-working people who would otherwise be unable to attend college. However, with federal and state aid decreasing, the cost of a community college education is still too high for many students. They are faced with the choice of working multiple jobs, going into debt, or both. The CLC Foundation’s goal is to provide life-changing support for these students: to help them achieve their certification or degree, debt-free. Quite simply, CLC represents a movement—a driving energy and optimism that is fueling the future of Lake County. As a member of the Foundation Board, I am proud to be one of 35 residents who have been inspired to volunteer their time and talent to raise scholarship dollars and make the gift of education a reality for more students. In FY 2015, we were able to award $909,223 to 509 students, but there were many more unmet requests. It is our goal to narrow that gap. Won’t you join us in the opportunity to make a CLC student’s impossible dream become an achievable goal? If you already are a scholarship donor, we thank you for your continued support. If you are not yet a donor, your generous support will allow students who would otherwise be unable to afford college a clear pathway to a brighter, more promising future. Joanna Rolek Chair, College of Lake County Foundation Board Executive Director, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce 2 GAME CHANGING YEAR IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS BECOME ACHIEVABLE GOALS This year, the College of Lake County Foundation focused on raising funds for Scholarships and Grants supporting College of Lake County students. Some significant results were: • $909,223 was provided to College of Lake County for scholarships and grants to 509 students. • $1,219,652 was raised from individuals, corporations, charitable foundations and our annual Gala and Golf Classic. • New donors such as Smalley Manufacturing invested in CLC students providing equipment, scholarships, and internships to build a skilled workforce. • A new strategic partnership was formed with One Million Degrees (OMD) bringing to Lake County its highly effective student success program achieving record setting grades and completion rates. CLC Foundation raised funds for a 40-scholar cohort. • CLC Foundation embraced raising funds for a debt free CLC education. CLC identified that the most pressing unmet student need for scholarship funding is students caught in the middle. They earn too much for federal or state grants. This means that they work and go to school part time or incur student loan debt or both impacting grades, completion rates, and time to market for much needed skills. • The CLC Foundation continues to receive strong support from the College of Lake County in the form of donated services covering CLC Foundation staff and indirect costs. The ROI is 69% on funds provided and 127% on funds raised. • We upgraded to the industry standard for non-profit organizations and Community College foundations implementing fund raising software - Raiser’s Edge and we continued to build a new staff team to support achieving our fund raising goals. • The College of Lake County and the College of Lake County Foundation collaborated to share historical student data to engage and inspire CLC Alumni. • The investment market was volatile resulting in investment returns of 1.52% on average funds invested. We have investment earning reserves which allowed us to award 4% on average balance for restricted and endowed scholarships for FY2016. All of this was made possible by the continued generosity of our donors who are providing the funding so that College of Lake County students can make their impossible dreams become achievable goals. Thank you! With deepest gratitude, Karen L.
