Location, Lighting, and Seniors
PROGRAM
In today’s fast paced senior market you have to come up with new
ideas constantly. Jon and Adam’s “Dynamic Seniors” program is designed to excite and inspire you. Jon will
demonstrate many of his techniques on lighting, posing, shooting on location, and in the studio. Adam will
then enhance those images
live so you can learn all of his Photoshop tricks. If
you want to learn new techniques and ideas you
can use right away, this is the program for you.
Jon Read, M.Photog, Cr., ASP, CPP, has owned Read
Photography in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over 30
years. During that time, Jon has won innumerable
awards for his photographic skill and vision.
Most recently he has won acclaim for his senior
portraiture. He has won Senior Photographers
International Photographer of the Year 3 times and
the prestigious Senior Portrait Artists Photographer
of the Year! Adam Hunter is the head of the digital
team at Read Photography and is best known for
his Illustrative photography and Photoshop skill.
Like Jon, Adam has also been honored with many

Sports for the Traditional Studio
PROGRAM
In his program, Pat speaks on how a traditional studio can increase profits by
breaking into the sports and underclass market for leagues and schools. He
will cover: How to get sports and underclass jobs, how to keep sports and
underclass jobs, controlling a sports or underclass shoot, delivery, control of
lighting both indoor and outdoor, on-line ordering, file management and
how to increase your sports and underclass sales.
The three points you need know:
• Sports and underclass is no longer a “specialty”. Any studio can benefit and profit from sports and underclass photography, even if your area
seems to be “locked in” with contracts. Learn how your studio can own
those contracts.
• You no longer need special equipment to make a profit. Your digital
camera and a handful of basic equipment is all you need to get started.
• There’s gold in them thar’ schools. With today’s hectic schedules,
parents count on photographers to capture their
children’s sports memories. Sports and underclass
pictures are an established practice that no parent
goes without. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to
not only profit, but market to, these students and
families.
Pat Cahill, Cr. Photog., is the owner and CEO of Cahill
Studios of Photography in Amery, Wisconsin. Cahill
Studios opened in 1978 and now manages a staff of 12.
Cahill Studios digitally photographs and processes more
than 25,000 underclass students as well as 15,000 sports
clients annually.
Pat is also the National Sales Manager for American Color
Imaging. Pat deals with teaching independent studios the
fundamentals of digital control and file management in an
underclass and sports setting. He instructs in the benefits of
these product lines as a way to even out cash flow and relieve
some of the financial stress of a “seasonal” photography
studio.

Power of Art and Imagery
PROGRAM
Successful design of images will please clients and judges alike! Learn the
timeless secrets of art to add impact and dazzle to your next assignment or
competition print.
Successful imagery depends upon evoking an emotional response from the
viewer. In this jam-packed two hours we will study many of the attributes
of classically successful art and discuss methods of applying these principles
to our photography. Sam will discuss and show artistic and compositional
elements of sculpture, paintings, and photography and how they relate in
a practical way to us as portraitists.
Sam’s keen interest for capturing quality
images is only exceeded by his passion for
sharing with others.
He has been teaching photography workshops
since 1980, while owning and operating a
studio in Northwest Washington since 1983.
His photographs have garnered numerous
awards nationally and in his home state of
Washington.
In eight years of entering PPA’s national print
competition, his images have been in the Loan
or Showcase collections nearly every year and
often used by PPA for promotional materials.
His enthusiasm and teaching skills are sure to
carry you forward in your pursuit of better image making.
Whether presenting or judging, his chief concern is providing high
quality constructive feedback and encouraging others to effectively
market, efficiently capture and profitably deliver truly professional
photographs to their clients.
Sam continues his own education by studying with the best
available, and personally challenges himself with studying art and
art history to improve his compositions.

Painter & Creativity
PROGRAM
“Once in a blue moon you meet a person that has the passion, talent and drive to
create outstanding artistic impressions of the world around them. Darrell is that
person. His understanding of all of the elements of color and design give him
the ability to create beautiful masterpieces on a consistent basis.” Scott
Dupras
“Darrell Chitty is not just a photographer. He’s an artist. Which is not
to say that other fine photographers are not artists as well, but Darrell
is…how shall we say it…truly a painter without a pint brush. Instead of
canvas and paint pots, Darrell creates impressionistic masterpieces by
painting with camera and computer, combining his modern technological
skills with an abiding appreciation and in-depth knowledge of art history
and the age-old techniques of the Old Masters. The consummate
professional, twice named Louisiana Photographer of the Year, he is a
college professor and conducts seminars and workshops through out the
United States. He has a following of admirers and patron around the world.

brian wedemeier
Brian Wedemeier started in 1989 working in the darkroom and wedding assistant at
Tiedt’s. Now 19 years later, Brian is manager and mainstream photographer. His journey
from darkroom to digital has been a real learning experience, but with good solid basic
education of exposure, light, composition, style, and art, he is sought, after for all types
of photography.
After graduating from Hawkeye Institute of Technology, he ventured to Tacoma, WA to
work for one of the largest studios, photographing about 2-3,000 contract high school seniors, in 5-6
months. (They do senior portraits a little different out there). After returning to Iowa, he worked for few
studios in the Cedar Valley. He had held several different positions in the photographic and art fields.
Brian returned to Tiedt’s in 1994 as production manager and wedding photographer. In 1997, his family
purchased the studio, and maintained the integrity and artistic images desired through out the MidWest. The studio concentrates on Senior, Family, Wedding, & Children’s portrait lines.
During his career in photography he has worked hard to earn the Certified Professional Photographer
of America degree 1997, received his Masters Degree in 2000, and Photographic Craftsman in 2005
respectively. He also has accomplished numerous PPA Loan Prints, for his Wedding, Children, and Senior
images, which is a true honor in the PPA International Print Competition. Brian’s images have been also
recognized by Fuji Film USA, with their prestigious Fuji Masterpiece Awards.
Beautiful lighting, excellent exposure, dynamic posing, composed images are just a few topics that will
be covered in the program. If you’re a wedding shooter-you need this classes-I will help you become a
wedding-ographer! I will help you find your wedding market niche’ and make you more $$$$ for less
weddings per year! And you won’t mind Photographing Weddings!
eric niceswanger
Eric Niceswanger’s program features his studio’s approach to booking and
photographing families in a prompt, fun manner. Clothing, composition and making it
an enjoyable situation for all is a must. Eric Niceswanger has done professional photography for 28 years and has owned
and operated Niceswanger Photography, a full-time in-home portrait studio for over
23 years. He is assisted by his wife Janel. A 1980 graduate of Hawkeye Institute of
Technology in Waterloo, he first worked at Kent Studio in Iowa City before returning
to his hometown of Carroll. Eric has served the Professional Photographers of Iowa for
over 25 years in various capacities, including CPP Commissioner, a member of the Board of Directors,
and serving as President in 2001. He received his PPA Masters Degree in 1992 and his Craftsman in
2000. He has been awarded Iowa’s Top Photographer and Iowa’s Top Ten three additional times. Eric
and Janel have two daughters, Amy and Trisha, who often work with their parents in the studio.

Lori Nordstrom opened a portrait studio in Winterset, Iowa in 2000 specializing in
maternity and baby portraits. Her unique approach to children’s portraiture has led to state, national, and
international awards and media attention. Lori’s work has been featured in magazines including PPA Magazine, Rangefinder, Kodak

tom strumpel
In his 25th year as a professional photographer, Tom Strumpel brings his passion
and talent to every portrait session in his studio, Country Oaks Photography. His
ability to light and pose with excellence is reflected in the fact that all but two
of his Master’s prints earned merits with images created during routine studio

by sharing his ideas, imagination, intuition, insight and inspiration.

How to Pack a print case properly...
1. Read and follow rules before making your prints- these can be downloaded from the website. If you have questions
call beforehand. Believe me the last thing we want to do is throw out a print. I don’t want to have to make that
decision and you don’t want it to happen. Read them over entirely- some things may have changed since you last
entered.
2. Fill out your forms and place your form and check on top of the prints so that they are the first thing pulled out when
your case is opened. No paper clips which could scratch your prints in transit.
3. Include a cd of your images for the slide show at the banquet.
4. When packing your prints do not put them in plastic bags and whatever you do do not use tape of any kind to secure
a bag or wrapping around the print. This makes it hard for the print crew slowing us down but worse the chances of
actual damage to your prints is far greater. It would be easy for the tape to accidentally touch the surface of your print
when we are unwrapping them. The best plan is to put a sheet of foam the same size of your print between each
print and stack them with the fronts together. You can buy this at Office Max or similar stores- it is white and comes
in a roll that you cut to fit. Another good option if the facing of 16x20 mount board which will not stick to the prints. 5. While it is not mandatory that you have an actual print case it is highly recommended. If you do not have one try
and check with other photographers to see if they have one you can borrow. Sometimes if people have been doing
print competition for a while they will have an old one they no longer use. You will be required to have a print case at
HOA or national and you will reuse them year after year so it might be a good investment for you. If you simply can
not come up with a print case try to use a box close to the correct size so that your prints do not slide around a lot or
that is not too tight of a fit making them difficult to get out. We will accept prints however they come packaged to us
but we are not responsible for damage to your prints even though we will do our best to handle them just like we
would like our own prints handled. You have spent a lot of time, energy and money on your prints and protecting
them by packing them correctly could save you heartache caused by damage to your prints.

Explanations – Examples – Events
PROGRAM
Like most photographers, I usually travel around the world to find the most
interesting shots, but for this personal assignment in December 1997, I
decided to photograph subjects close to home. I captured the Hold Ghost
Catholic Church in downtown Denver on a Sunday after sunset. I just
love the color tone and the contrast between the old architecture of the
church and new architecture of the office building.
The most difficult part of this shot was getting the right light. I waited
until twilight so the sky was a deep blue and there was enough ambient
light to retain the building exposure. I’ve shot with Canon cameras for 20
years and for this image, my Canon EOS-1N 35mm system gave me the
quickest response - I was able to capture the precise moment I was aiming
for. I like the ease of use of my Canon equipment and Canon’s selection
of wide-angle optics aren’t available in other formats. The EF 20mm f/2.8
USM lens used in this shot is perfect for architectural, interior and exterior
shooting with very little distortion.
At the time, I could get a better scan of this scene from a film camera, but
today, I would have no problem getting this shot with the instant gratification of my Canon
EOS-1Ds Mark II.
Don Emmerich lives in Oklahoma City, where he runs Studio
Art Photography. He is president of the American Society of
Photographers, and is on the advisory board at The Colorado
Institute of Art.

News from NWIPPA
Our September meeting was a nice little “get-away”. September 7 we all met up
at the Holiday Inn in Cedar Falls. We enjoyed
each other’s company over a bite to eat at
Famous Dave’s. Jean, seen eating this amazing
brownie sundae had the rest of the gang help
her out. It was just too big for one person. On
Monday, September 8, we had the wonderful
opportunity to tour ACI. I was very impressed
and enjoyed learning how everything works
when I place my order. They are coming out
with some really neat, new products, so be
ready. I now have a greater appreciation for the men and women who
work so hard to deliver the very best. We then went to Bo Studio 121 in
Waverly, IA. I can sum it up in one word… WOW! It was amazing and
we appreciated them opening their studio us. Attending this event was
Shaun Winkel & her associate Jennifer Boysen from Everlasting Portrait
Studio in Mapleton, Rod Matz & his wife Jan from Rod Matz Photography in Hawarden, Jean Poland from Poland Photography in Clear Lake,
Bobbi Schmeling from Creative Photography
in Milford, Jim Olivari from Olivari

Good Works
A key to success in any business is finding a way to be “the
next big thing”. Formed in 2000, Special Kids Photography
of America (SKPA) has gradually built an awareness of their
program and definitely qualifies as the next big thing in studio
photography. Professional photographers across the country
are developing a “new wave” of photography involving
children with special needs.
McKenna Professional Imaging in Waterloo, Iowa is has taken
a lead role as one of the primary supporters of SKPA. The Lab
realizes how valuable the studio experience and photos are to
the families, and is thrilled to be involved with the program.
Many studios have expressed interest in the
program and McKenna Pro is there to help them
from the first step. Understanding the challenges
is fundamental to both the studio and the families.
Parents of children with special needs know that
even day-to-day activities require effort that most
people don’t realize and often hesitate at the
thought of a studio photography visit. The studio’s
responsibility is to advertise what they can offer
these parents. Partnering with McKenna Pro and
SKPA is the best way for a photographer to obtain
all of the education and skills necessary to make
a positive experience for everyone involved. A
photographer who truly wants to stand out among
the competition and at the same time provide a
service that is greatly appreciated by families has
a tremendous opportunity to achieve these goals
by promoting this type of photography. Many
photographers may not see themselves as the type to be the first at something in their area, but if one wants to
encourage others to try something outside of their comfort zone, there’s no better example than to show them
their own courage by being a leader. The advantage to leading in this particular type of project is the number of
resources available to start and succeed. SKPA has a terrific website (www.specialkidsphotography.com) that offers
absolutely everything a photographer could ask for in getting special needs photography added to their business;
FAQ’s, workshops, photo tips, and much more. Photographers can also count on McKenna Pro to assist them from
getting started to final products.
SKPA has a growing number of sponsors, members, and many inspiring success stories. Beyond photographs,
SKPA is helping to create a greater understanding of health and civic issues in a way that benefits everyone. The
program really does impact lives. Special needs photography offers a sense of accomplishment that not many
other professions can. Any photographer would be proud to be recognized as a progressive in their field, to make
a difference to families, and to make what they do more than just a job.

Julie Wainwright of Villisca, Iowa, has been an active member of PPI since 2005. She grew up all over the world as
an army brat. In 1996, during her senior year of high school in Ansbach, Germany, she was drawn and addicted to
her photography classes. While she has had very little formal training, this doesn’t stop her from reading over 125
books on photography and photography related subjects such as posing, lighting and Photoshop. It wasn’t until
2005 when she finished nursing school with her RN that she was able to finally concentrate on her photography
education and getting her business started. She loves traveling to seminars when she can and is very thankful to all
who have recently volunteered their time and studio to help her learn more! She is married to Adam, a critical care
paramedic, and they have two children, Andrew is nine and Addison is two.
She as an obstetrics nurse that has seen the devastation that losing an infant causes and has become a sponsor
and newly affiliated photographer for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. This is a non-profit organization that was
started in Colorado in 2005 after a woman, Cheryl Haggard, gave birth to beautiful Maddux, and quickly found
out that he was born with a disorder called Myotubular Myopathy which left him unable to move, breathe or
swallow on his own. Before Cheryl and her husband had to make the ultimate decision and remove Maddux from
the lifesupport they called Littleton, Colorado photographer Sandy “Sam” Puc’ to come create a few black and
white portraits of the Haggard’s holding their precious angel one last time.
The concept created a tender, priceless gift that no one could replicate again. Cheryl and Sam put their heads
together and knew they had a gift to give, by creating Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. There are over 5,000
volunteer affiliated photographers in the United States and 19 international countries. This is not enough. They
desperately need volunteer photographers as well as graphic/retouch artists. As well as monetary donations too!
At the families request, either before or after the infant has passed on the hospital can call a NILMDTS affiliated
photographer to come to the home, hospice center or hospital and conduct a private and sensitive session. The
portraits are then professionally retouched and returned to the family on a CD/DVD.
Julie understands that she is very lucky having the medical knowledge that she does going into these sessions
and wants to stress that they are not easy, very stressful, but she attributes that as a nurse she has seen what the
parents of a deceased infant go through and as a photographer feels this is the right thing to do. “It is a way of
giving back to those who are struggling. Life is so precious and sometimes we all take it for granted. This job isn’t
for everyone. You have to be strong and sensitive for them, but once you have done one of these precious sessions
your life will change forever. The way you look at your children, will change forever. I promise.”
Please visit www.nilmdts.org and bring your tissues. If anyone has any questions that Julie might be able to answer
please don’t hesitate!

Sometimes another photography
assignment becomes more than a job. On
September I had one of those jobs when I
took photographs of the 65th reunion of
the USS Iowa.
Joe works sales in our office. About a
year ago, he saw a notice about the
upcoming reunion in the newspaper and
approached the organizer with the idea of
photographing the group, and the contact
was not interested.
After a few more phone calls, the ice had
been broken, and we were set to go for an outdoor shoot.
We had some challenges. Our main contact, a WWII veteran, passed away a month before the event. On the day
of the outdoor photo shoot it was pouring rain. Knowing the location (where PPI has its annual meeting), I
knew the pool area would work. I was also having a bad day - or so I thought.
After we set up the portable 3-step risers, the men started to make their way down to the pool. Some slowly,
some needing assistance. The vets from WWII are in their 80s. The vets from Korea are in their 70s. What
age has robbed of them physically has not taken away from their spirit. They still told salty sailor jokes, and still
complained about the things like sea rations. I was lightheartedly corrected - I was to use the term “deck” instead
of “floor.”
I positioned the men, and then I walked to the front of the group and thanked them for their service to our
country. I am not a veteran, but I feel indebted to all those who have served their country in this way.
After the picture, the wives and the men thanked me over and over. The appreciated that I was grateful for their
service. They appreciated that we took a group picture. This had been their first one ever!
I ended up at a table with three veterans - one from WWII and two from Korea. I talked with them about their
service. The WWII veteran was a marine who had served on the ship, and he still looks fit and trim. One of the
people he had been assigned to guard was President Roosevelt as they sailed to Africa to meet with Churchill and
Stalin. Since he was from New York, he traded stories with the President about Hyde Park. Here’s a little WWII
trivia - the Iowa was supposed to be where the Japanese surrendered. Truman changed the location to the USS
Missouri because that was his home state! The veterans from Korea talked about the landing at Inchon. When
the USS Iowa fired a broadside, the whole ship moved. The firepower was - literally - awesome. One shell could
level a football stadium. History came alive at that small table. I was in the middle of it.
After the men left to join their fellow veterans in a remembrance for all those who had passed away, I packed up.
I had a great day.
