GENERAL MANAGER’S
MESSAGE Bryan Polak, General Manager
Hello WHCA Community,
Welcome back everyone! Hope everyone had a wonderful summer. We have been very busy getting ready for the
arena renovation. The arena doors will be locked so the only
entrances into the building will be the front of the building
past the amazing garden or past the tennis courts and into
the health club. We hope the closure will be only 4-5 months
and will keep everyone informed as the project moves on.
Taste of the Neighborhood is coming up fast so remember to get your tickets. It will be an amazing event!
Stop by and give us your feedback on the facility, programs we have or you would like to see here, events that
you would like to see here, or anything else we can do to
make our building even better!
As always, please check the WHCA website, Facebook,
Twitter, and watch your emails for new health club programs and for community updates.
Thank you.

WHCA GREEN
COMMITTEE
Chris Koper, [email protected]
The summer is going by so fast. I am proud to announce
the Calgary Foundation (have a look at their website for
all they do!) honored the green committee with a small
grant and the garden talks we have been putting on in
the gardens once a month will be FREE to anyone interested. Here are the dates and the topics:
Sept. 10- Extending the Growing Season and more
• Protection against frosts and prolonging the harvest including cold frames
• Harvesting techniques and storage of root crops
• The composting system
• Perennial edibles
Oct 15- More soil - amending the soil now rather than
in spring
• Garlic and other crop planting and seeding
• Planning for next year: crop rotation, expanding or enhancing the garden
• Preserving and fermentation techniques
• Leaving the garden looking beautiful and cared for Throughout the winter month
The talks are outside weather permitting and are casual
and fun! The times are 10 am to noon.
Are you having trouble with critters (squirrels and rabbits
etc.) in your garden? Try one of these options:
Garden centers have sprays for specific critters, or mince
garlic, Tabasco sauce, in water and let sit over night. Spray
your plants, but remember each time it rains you many
need to reapply. Coffee grounds and crushed eggshells in
the garden are a deterrent and also good for the garden
as they compost. Also sprinkling cayenne pepper around

prized plants will make the plants undesirable.
It is good practice to add some compost of some kind to
your gardens (flower beds too) every year spring or fall to
add nutrients for the plants that have leached out from
watering and the plants themselves.
If you are strolling thru the gardens at West Hillhurst
you will see the incredible work of individuals that have
rented a garden bed as well as the work of many children learning about gardening. If you have children you
would love to learn about gardening, please email us at
[email protected] and we will be sure to contact you in the spring with the opportunities for fun and
learning.
End of September or early October WHCA Green Committee is building a giant chess/checker board patio near the
gardens. Charter Landscapes is donating their time and
expertise to make this build possible. If you are interested
in helping out and being a part of the fun, or having your
name/ company’s name engraved on one of the squares,
please contact Chris at [email protected]
Did you know that gardening provides health benefits?
Gardening provides physical, mental, and even spiritual
benefits. People are realizing that a connection with the
land is important for health, happiness, fitness and overall well being. Gardening gets you outside, breathing
fresh air, constant movement, and calorie burn. Gardening may also help relieve depression. Sometimes gardening is rooted in the feeling of being disconnected from
nature. Getting out and getting your hands in the earth
and witnessing growth can be uplifting.
Walking barefoot on the open ground (not concrete) is
said to transfer free electrons from the grounds surface
into your body that spread throughout your tissues.
Grounding has been shown to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance your well being.
Many a gardener will attest to the sense of well being received from sticking your hands in the dirt as well, as the
pleasure of eating your own home grown food!
Consider turning a small area in your yard into a garden,
or getting a garden plot at a community garden! You
get outside, gain exercise getting to and from the garden, meet other community members giving a sense of
belonging. At the WHCA Community Garden we bring
people together and do fun events as well as help people
learn. Come see the gardens and have a chat with us if
we are there!
We hope to see you at the WHCA in the future!

health benefits of keeping active. Sports can be an excellent
source for kids to grow, learn and develop team spirit, but it
is important to ensure kids are taught boundaries, limitations

Cybersafe Early Years
It is impossible to ignore any longer, and vital to prepare kids at
an early age to be cyber safe. The Internet is a place, not a thing.
With the increasing use of tablets, mobile games, learning software and eBook readers, parents and schools are turning to the
Internet as a teaching tool, with many kids starting as young as
preschool. The early years is the best time to begin to lay the
foundation of what safe online behavior is, how to be a good
online citizen, and the differences between the real world and
the online world.

We are inviting everyone, big and small to participate

SAIT turns 100
on oct. 16
Plan on attending the party and help SAIT celebrate
Mark your calendar! Your neighbour on the hill — the
Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) — turns
100 years old on Oct. 16, 2016, and you’re invited to the
party.
There will be something for everyone at the all-day,
community event: a barbecue lunch for the first 2,500
people, a car, truck and helicopter show and live musical
entertainment. SAIT will open historical time capsules,
serve up the biggest birthday cake ever and end the day
with a fireworks display.
Attendance is free, but SAIT is asking community residents to register, which will help with attendance estimates. Registration and event information is available
on sait.ca/100. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
Sorry for the disruption: road closure information
To accommodate the fireworks display, the City of Calgary requires 8 Avenue NW, east of 12 Street NW, to be
closed on Oct. 16 from 4 pm to midnight. Signage and
detour information will be posted closer to the event
date.
History. In the Making
Canada’s first publicly-funded institute opened its doors
on Oct. 16, 1916 with 11 students enrolled in metal
working and motor mechanics. Today, SAIT is the thirdlargest post-secondary in Alberta, providing a variety of
baccalaureate and applied degrees, diploma and certificate programs. SAIT trains one-third of the province’s
apprentices and has been identified as the third best
research college in Canada.

With rising household costs, a growing number of families
are struggling to afford shelter and other basic needs such
as food, medication, and childcare. Household incomes in
Calgary have not kept up to housing prices. Over the past
decade, prices have increased 156% while incomes have
increased 34%.
Over 4000 households are currently on the qualified waiting list for Calgary Housing Company, but the actual need is
far greater. In Calgary, over 38,000 renter households need
affordable housing. These Calgarians require some extra assistance to ensure they have access to safe and affordable
places to call home. Those in need include students, seniors,
young couples, people with disabilities, people who are unemployed, low-income workers and their families, and new
Canadians.
What do we mean by affordable housing? For housing to be
affordable, The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
states a household should not spend more than 30 percent
of its gross income on rent. That target is especially difficult
for lower income Calgarians to meet and they must often
spend larger percentages of their incomes on basic shelter.
Although increasing the affordable housing supply is one
of City Council’s priorities, the City of Calgary has not added
a single affordable housing unit in the past three years. This
is one of the reasons that Council unanimously passed the
new Affordable Housing Strategy in July.
The strategy calls for the City to secure funding from the
provincial and federal governments, to work with partner
agencies and the development industry, and to prioritize
private projects that include some affordable and accessible
units. The strategy also calls for the City to build new rental
units through Calgary Housing Company and affordable
homes for ownership through Attainable Homes Calgary.
Learning from the past, the City no longer concentrates
affordable housing in one area, but instead encourages
smaller projects that better integrate into all neighbourhoods. Most Ward 7 communities already host at least one
affordable housing development.
Proposed affordable housing projects will include public
engagement to ensure that they integrate well with the
surrounding neighbourhood. Should your neighbourhood
be selected to host affordable housing, please ask how it
can best be accommodated and welcomed into the community. Your new neighbours will certainly appreciate it.

North
of the River
Matt Grant
By mid-July, it had become clear that my humble gardening efforts had failed. If I hoped to enjoy Albertagrown produce, farmers' markets were my best remaining option.
Three of my favourites are in communities stretched
along the northern banks of the Bow River, in Bridgeland Riverside, Hillhurst-Sunnyside and Parkdale.
Bridgeland Riverside's Farmers' Market (917 Centre Avenue N.E.) runs every Thursday from 3:30 pm to 7:00
pm until October 6th. Now in its second year, a growing range of vendors display their wares beneath tents
spread out across a lawn boasting one of the best views
of downtown Calgary. And while you're in Bridgeland
Riverside, may I suggest a walk along the increasingly
interesting 1st Avenue N.E.? Whether you're into sushi,
ramen, burgers, breakfast, pizza, cocktails, coffee or vinyl, Bridgeland Riverside has it all. I'm biased – I used
to live there – but this community is great and getting
greater.
The Hillhurst-Sunnyside Farmers' Market (1320 – 5 Avenue N.W.) is every Wednesday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm
and every Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. One of the
coolest things about this market (and there are many) is
that folks in need can stop by on Mondays for fresh produce. They believe "community members should have
access to good food". I couldn't agree more.
The Parkdale Farmers' Market (3512 – 5 Avenue N.W.)
runs every Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm, all year
round. After you're loaded up with fresh food, why not
bike west to Edworthy Park for a picnic. En route, check
out Brian Tolle's public artwork Outflow, along the banks
of the Bow at 34A Street N.W.
This harvest season, these three markets promise to
be vibrant destinations for Calgarians looking to meet
neighbours and support local vendors and producers.
Matt Grant lives north of the River – now in West Hillhurst
after many years in Bridgeland Riverside.

News from the Friends of Nose Hill

The City needs help in identifying weeds in open space.
The management plan involves methods to combat
weed threats. These tools are biological, mechanical,
chemical, and cultural controls. There are some concerns
about spraying pesticides and herbicides, although the
City posts signs and does have some pesticide-free
parks in Calgary.
One of the controls is an organic vegetation management practice called targeted grazing, a land management strategy which is safe, chemical free, and environmentally friendly.
Beginning in June (and for three weeks this summer) a
herd of 100 goats was monitored 24 hours a day by the
shepherd, with herding dogs, volunteers, and horses in
Confluence Park (West Nose Creek).
This is important wildlife habitat. Unlike Nose Hill, the
site permits livestock grazing with an approved development permit application, although the practice is
generally prohibited within City limits. As the animals
fertilize the soil, their hooves help to till, aerate, and condition the ground. Their digestion is acidic, so that the
seeds cannot grow as new weeds. The purpose was to
control invasive species such as Canada thistle, yellow
clematis, nodding thistle, and other delicious broad leaf
weeds they prefer. See: online at calgary.ca/goats.
The Urban Conservation Lead for City Parks said the public
has been very supportive. We now know we can use goats
in an active park, without disrupting enjoyment by park
visitors, whether on foot, bicycle, or with dogs on leash.
The goats did an excellent job targeting invasive weeds,
such as Canada thistle, hound’s tongue, and hawkwood.

The project budget was $25,000. The City will assess and
evaluate the data to decide about the project’s effectiveness. The next step will be to evaluate its potential
use in parks and open spaces. If successful, the initiative
may expand to other natural areas in the city.
On the monthly BiodiverCity Committee agenda there
were announcements, presentations on wildlife strategy, biodiversity implementation plan; updates from
subcommittees, work plan, business unit survey, and list
of potential 3rd party partners. Meetings are in downtown Calgary and open to the public. For details, contact [email protected].
