BOX ELDER BUGS
Another problem that came up this week was in
what do about Box Elder (maple) bugs. Right
now the bright red nymphs are evident in and
around the garden and, if you step on or squish
them, ‘bleed’ bright red.
that James and I were building bunkers so we
could take pot-shots at each other changed to

were putting in raised planting beds built not
with wall block but with 70%-sand-filled
polypropylene geotextile bags. No concrete, no
rebar, no forming, and often no levelling pad are

Once the walls were built and the beds

took form; a ‘living’ wall. It’s possible to plant
into the bags and this is being done in large
highway projects with pre-seeded bags or hydroseeding, but more aesthetically pleasing ‘living
walls’ can also be grown with this system. We’ve
planted our wall with a combination of
sempervivums
(hens
and
chicks), sedums
(stonecrops), ornamental grasses and microclover. Consensus of opinion is that it looks
fabulous already but I know it will just get better
and better as the plants get established and
cover the fabric to create a tapestry of colours
and textures!

While these bugs do favour box elder
(Manitoba maple – Acer negundo) trees, you’ll
find them where other varieties of maples grow

because it’s American, few of the controls that
are mentioned are available to us except
permethrin which is the active ingredient in
many of the organic pesticides we stock such

APPLE LANE GIFTS: Herb knives
No doubt you’ve planted your herbs but, if
not, we still have lots of great varieties on hand.
The best advice I can give you on growing herbs is
to give them as much sunshine as possible and to
harvest them regularly. Don’t let them go to
seed, if possible, to keep leaf production
ongoing. Some of my favourite herbs like thyme
and basil need to be stripped from the stems
before use and this can be a tedious step. The
herb knives and snips we have in stock are either
notched or have well-placed holes through which
the stems can be pulled. For herbs like chives
where what’s needed is multiple cuts with each
stroke, we have herb scissors with multiple
blades for true efficiency!
