Welcome to the
South Coast of
Massachusetts
CITY OF NEW BEDFORD
JONATHAN F. MITCHELL, MAYOR
Welcome!
You’ve found the most beautiful corner of Massachusetts, and my favorite place
in the world: South Coast, Massachusetts.
The South Coast is renowned for its beaches, and on this corner of Buzzard’s
Bay, ocean breezes remind you that the best stuff in life is free. But look just
beyond the surface and you’ll find an area steeped in culture.
New Bedford played an integral role to the whaling industry and our storied past
is preserved in world-class museums and historic sites; one of my favorites is
Fort Tabor- one of the nation’s most unique attractions, blending history with a
scenic ocean landscape. The seafaring tradition continues with the city getting a
nod as one of Yachting’s 2012 Best Towns.
Today, the South Coast area is filled with unbelievably talented artists and musicians, and we’re beyond lucky to play home to one of the nation’s finest theaters,
the Zeiterion. The Atlantic even named New Bedford the seventh most artistic
city in America.
There’s never been a more exciting time to be a part of this ongoing renaissance.
And no matter when you visit, you’ll find stunning scenery and a variety of community festivals and events.
Finally, I couldn’t possibly talk about the South Coast without mentioning its
world-class restaurants and bars. You may find me taking my mom out to dinner
at one of the area’s celebrated seafood eateries, or on date at any of downtown
New Bedford’s live music venues.
The City of New Bedford is located in Southeastern Massachusetts on the shores of
beautiful Buzzards Bay. Here, visitors can experience the unique arts, history, and
culture that residents enjoy year-round.
New Bedford is the world’s most famous whaling-era seaport with a rich history and
cultural heritage. Our city is internationally known as the number one fishing port in
America. Fresh seafood harvested by local fishermen is enjoyed across the United
States and around the globe.
In addition to fresh seafood, local restaurants offer an international dining experience
including Portuguese, Cape Verdean and many other culinary delights that have
established this city as a destination.
New Bedford is also a destination for entertainment and recreation. The City is home
to a vibrant arts and culture scene, and boasts the presence of three colleges. In
addition to its many local shops, galleries and museums, New Bedford is home to a
National Park, a world class Whaling museum, one of the finest small zoos in the
country, picturesque beaches and parks, many exciting cultural feasts and festivals.
This city is a great place to call home and a beautiful place to experience as a visitor. I
invite you to bring your family and friends to explore all that New Bedford has to offer.
Sincerely,
After growing up in New Bedford and traveling to over 75 countries on six continents, I don’t think there’s a better place to visit or call home. On behalf of all of
us who call the South Coast home, we hope you discover why we love this place
so dearly.

Beaches
West Island Town Beach
36 Bluepoint Road
Fairhaven, MA 02719
(508) 979-4030
West Island Beach is a natural beauty. Located adjacent to a state
reservation, this small beach is very remote, peaceful, and relaxing.
Being a calm- water beach it isn’t ideal for playing in ocean swells, but
it is a great swimming spot. Since the lifeguards offer swim lessons for
children here, it is safe to say that this beach is a good spot for beginning swimmers of all ages. However, even for the more advanced
swimmers, there are patches of sandbars that are fun to swim towards.

Nonresidents - $100 Season Pass, $20 Day Pass (vehicle),

The South Coast is lined with miles of sandy destinations to lounge,
surf, and sun tan. Pitch an umbrella with family and friends against a
backdrop of photo-worthy dunes. With saltwater options ranging from
larger public beaches with snack bars and events, to cozier, quieter
sands, you’ll find a seashore that suits your style. In the offseason,
area beaches provide peaceful spots for coastal strolls.

One of the smaller parks in Massachusetts, Fort Phoenix State Reservation combines historic features, scenic views, and a variety of
recreational facilities. Minutes from downtown New Bedford, the park
contains a half-mile of Buzzards Bay beachfront. Adjacent to the park
(and managed by the Town of Fairhaven) is For Phoenix, a national
landmark that gives the parks its name. From the ramparts remnants,
you can gaze across the bay where the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought and spot the rolling meadows of the Elizabeth
Islands.
East Beach in New Bedford is located right across the harbor from
Fort Phoenix. It is right down the road from Fort Taber, a 47-acre park
that has a military history, as it was designed for harbor defense. East
Beach and West Beach are both municipal beaches in New Bedford
that are located on opposite sides of the peninsula.

Horseneck Beach State Reservation
Rte. 88, Westport Point
Westport, MA
(508) 636-8816
This park is one of the best-kept secrets among the Massachusetts
State Parks. Here, an 1,800-foot saltwater beach is backed by rambling hills of beach grass and shaded, grassy picnic sites. A broad,
scenic marsh lines the Slocum River on the park's eastern edge.
Spread across nearly 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh, Horseneck Beach is one of the most popular facilities in the Massachusetts
State Parks system. Located at the western end of Buzzards Bay, the
sandy, southwest-facing, 2-mile-long beach is breezy all year-round,
providing excellent windsurfing and a dependable respite from sweltering inland temperatures every summer. The combination of ocean
beach and estuary habitat makes Horseneck one of the premier birding
locations in New England. Behind the dunes near Gooseberry Neck
(a rocky headland at the eastern end of the reservation), is a 100-site
campground.
The beach is ideal for families with children. The Buzzards Bay surf is
calm and shallow, giving rise to warm water temperatures through most
of the summer. It is also a great spot to see egrets, herons, ospreys,
terns, and hawks.

BIKING & HIKING
Miles of roads wind through farmland, wooded areas, and coastal inlets,
providing riders with breathtaking views and endless route options. Area bike
shops offer both novice and expert cyclists everything from the latest gear to
bicycle rentals for visitors of all sizes. And with the New Bedford Bicycle Committee advocating cyclist awareness, the area is poised to become a renowned
destination for recreational riding. Also, don’t forget to check out the Mattapoisett Rail Trail, a biking trail that extends from Mattapoisett to Fairhaven.
With tons of conservation land, the South Coast area has converted several
forested spaces and former farms into can’t-miss nature trails. Several allow
horseback riding for a different way to explore the land. Other paths crisscross
historic sites, such as the Revolutionary War-era fort at Fort Phoenix State
Reservation. The Lloyd Center for the Environment, known for its environmental research and education, also has a network of wooded walks.

Downtown Information
One of the pleasures of visiting downtown is to walk its cobblestone streets
and look at its stately buildings, banks, and storehouses from New Bedford’s
whaling heyday. A visit to the many museums, galleries, restaurants, and retail
stores is a perfect complement to your national park experience. Many historical and cultural attractions in the downtown area are open to the public, with
some charging admission.
New Bedford History
The History of New Bedford
by New Bedford Whaling
National Historical Park
New Bedford
New Bedford is a vibrant city rich with history, culture, art, architecture and
a community proud of its’ seafaring heritage. The city was once the whaling
capital of the world and homeport to a fleet of hundreds of whaleships. Today,
it’s the nation’s top fishing port. The same streets, buildings, and harbor ares
visited by the likes of Herman Melville and Frederick Douglass, preserve the
stories of early settlers, whaling merchants, maritime workers, and the many
people for whom New Bedford was both a port of entry and of opportunity.
Hetty Green
By the time of her death in 1834, Henrietta (Hetty) Howland Robinson Green
was recognized as the richest woman in the world. “The Witch of Wall Street"
invested the whaling fortune she inherited into real estate, railroads, and
money lending.
NEW BEDFORD’S HISTORY
NEW BEDFORD’S HISTORY
Herman Melville
In 1841, Herman Melville sailed out of New Bedford harbor on the whaleship
Acushnet. That whaling experience inspired Melville to write what many consider the greatest American novel ever written—Moby-Dick.
Frederick Douglass
In the hopes of finding work as a caulker on New Bedford’s waterfront, Frederick Douglass arrived in this city in 1838 after escaping slavery in Maryland. He
and his wife Anna stayed with abolitionists Nathan and Mary (Polly) Johnson in
their Seventh Street home.
Underground Railroad
In the mid-1800s, New Bedford was the whaling capital of the world. The success and global, exploratory nature of the whaling industry helped to create
a bustling, cosmopolitan seaport community, and one of the richest and most
diverse cities in the world. Opportunities for individuals and families from all
backgrounds to make a living and prosper were readily available at sea and in
the shoreside businesses that supported the whaling industry.
New Bedford was also attractive to slaves seeking freedom because of the
opportunities for employment presented by the whaling industry, the active
abolitionist community, and the coastal trading system that provided escaping
slaves opportunities to hide on vessels heading to New Bedford from southern
ports.

The Atlantic Cities:
The Most Artistic Cities in America 2011
Listed among well-known artistic communities from New York to San Francisco, New Bedford places number 7 on this top 10 list. The publication pointed
out the city’s coastal location and long-standing artist population as factors
contributing to artists’ national and international reputations. Cities were named
to the list based on having “the largest concentration of artists relative to their
population.”

yachting, New Bedford got the nod thanks to its rich
history in the commercial fishing industry and its
commitment to fostering the love of sea in residents
young and old. Yachting magazine also noted the
Community Boating Center with its roots in sailing,
as well as the city’s award-winning Working Waterfront Festival.
National Trust for Historic Preservation:
Dozen Distinctive Destinations 2011
New Bedford was given the honor of distinctive destination thanks to its maritime history and contemporary fishing industry. With only 12 picks, the annual
list is highly selective. And while the organization recognized the preservation
of downtown’s cobblestone streets and 19th- and 20th-century buildings, it also
acknowledged the city’s role in the Civil War’s Underground Railroad, as well
as its influence in the textile industry.

celebrate the country’s oldest industry. And what
better way to toast history than at one of the
nation’s largest commercial fishing ports? Part

Town Profiles
Acushnet
TOWN PROFILES
Acushnet is a quiet friendly community with a population of 10,607 people, with many
miles of winding, country roads. Residents take great pride in the town’s schools, openness, and feeling of family. Each Fall, during the well-known Apple/Peach Festival,
Acushnet’s growers, artisans, and the Historical Society welcome visitors from far and
wide.
Dartmouth
When Dartmouth was first settled in 1652, its history was that of an agricultural community, but, during the late 19th century, its coastline quickly became an attractive resort
area.Situated between New Bedford and Fall River, Dartmouth also boasts spectacular
river ways, harbors, and brooks, in addition to a beautiful and picturesque coastline.
There’s plenty to see and do in Dartmouth, especially if you’re into recreational adventures, including kayaking, canoeing, biking, or trail walking. Numerous rivers flow north
to south in Dartmouth, such as the Copicut, Shingle Island, Paskamansett and the Slocum River, while Destruction Brook and Little River are divided in to sections.
There are even more activities if you prefer to travel by car. Take a ride out to the harbor,
villages, or the beach, where you’ll find neat little shops, cafés, and farm stands. Also,
if shopping is your thing, Dartmouth has a commercial district with easy access to Interstate 195.

A scenic coastal town on the shores of Buzzards Bay, Fairhaven shares its harbor with
the famed seaport New Bedford. Historically, the town is linked with the sea, as early
ship building began here in the 1700s. Even the first naval battle of the Revolutionary
War was fought off the shores and Revolutionary War-era Fort Phoenix still guards the
harbor entrance. The present waterfront was developed during the height of the whaling
days.During that time it was the home of Manjiro Nakahama, the first Japanese person
to live in America. Besides its nautical heritage, Fairhaven also boasts some of the most
beautiful public buildings in New England—gifts from Standard Oil millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers, who grew up in town. The Italian Renaissance-style library, French Gothic
town hall, English Perpendicular Gothic Unitarian Memorial Church, and the Elizabethaninfluence high school are iconic structures, designed by noted New England architect
Charles Brigham.
Fairhaven’s restaurants, featuring fresh seafood, New England specialties and ethnic
cuisine are too numerous to list. There are two hotels in town and several bed and breakfasts, among other accommodations. For those arriving by sea, a number of marinas are
located along the coast. All over town you’ll find unique shops selling antiques, gifts, fine
arts and crafts, locally manufactured handbags and chocolates, decorative home furnishings, and more. From outdoor concerts, fairs, and
festivals (including an authentic Portuguese festa), to
walking tours, fishing, bicycling, and swimming at Fort
Phoenix State Beach, there’s a plethora of activities for
you to enjoy while visiting Fairhaven.
TOWN PROFILES
Originally an agricultural community embracing the headwaters of the Acushnet
River, the residential town of Acushnet has
retained its rural atmosphere, while also
providing a home for various industries.
Through the 1800s, the town was the site
of water-powered factories and boat yards;
in the 1990s, the town hosted construction,
manufacturing, and agri/aquaculture industries. It is the original home of the Titleist
golf ball.
Fairhaven
Marion
A delightfully residential town, Marion is described
by its residents as having a rare natural beauty and
charm. The small-town character—blended with the flavor and benefits of a seacoast community with modern
conveniences—makes Marion an ideal town for yearround living. Recreation opportunities are plentiful, and
Sippican Harbor hosts a variety of waterfront activities,
including fishing, pleasure boating, and swimming at
the town beaches. There are golf courses, indoor and
outdoor tennis courts, and Tabor Academy periodically opens up its hockey rink to the
public.
Marion’s roots go back to 1679, when the area was first settled as a village known as
Sippican in the town of Rochester. Rochester, Mattapoisett, and Sippican—widely separate villages under the domain of Rochester—gradually developed different interests and
economies. These factors led to independence for Sippican, which was renamed Marion
in 1852 in honor of the Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion. Today it has a stable
year-round population that moderately increases in the summertime. Over the years, the
heterogeneous population has worked hard to preserve Marion’s rich historic traditions.

Mattapoisett
Westport
The Town of Mattapoisett has a long and colorful history dating back to 1640. The name,
meaning “place of rest,” comes from the Wampanoag language. For two hundred years
the Village of Mattapoisett lay within the Township of Rochester, but in 1857 Mattapoisett
petitioned and became an independent town. The long wharves at the water’s edge, built
from a local quarry’s granite, serve as a silent memorial to the once thriving ship building
industry on the shores of Buzzards Bay. Shipyard Park, adjacent to the wharves, is the
site of Jonathan Holmes’ dry dock where in 1878 the last whale ship to be built in Mattapoisett, the Wanderer, was launched.
Westport is a small town nestled between Dartmouth and Fall River. It was so named
because it was the westernmost port in the Massachusetts Bay Colony when it was first
settled in 1670 as a part of the town of Dartmouth. In 1787, the town, along with the town
of New Bedford, seceded from Dartmouth. The town is now mostly residential, with a
large farming community. A 15-minute drive from New Bedford, Westport serves up a mix
of small-town feel and a family-friendly beach atmosphere. Westport is home to Horseneck Beach, the largest public beach in the South Coast chain. Many travelers find their
way to this popular coastline attraction by heading down Route 88 off of I-195. If you take
this route, be sure to stop in the Westport town square and visit Partners Village store.
Grab yourself a lunch at their cafe or a refreshing beverage to add to the cooler. Close
by are other fine clothing stores and gift shops.
Wareham
Wareham, situated at the head of Buzzards Bay, offers an
exceptional location within easy traveling distance to the Boston
and Providence metropolitan areas. Boston is about one hour
away and Providence is about 45 minutes away. All of the tourist
amenities of the Cape Cod area are available in Wareham.
The town has over 54 miles of coastline enhanced by beaches,
estuaries, rivers, and ponds that create a subtle contrast to a vibrant, growing community. The town’s quality of life offers an excellent home for industry, but particularly a spectacular home for
residents. From its early beginnings of farming and ship building
in the 1700s, Wareham has evolved a diversified industrial and
commercial economy with ample human and natural resources
to support continued growth. Wareham offers a distinctive social
and economic mix from stately tech industry to traditional boat
building.
50
Travelers also have a more scenic option of heading through Dartmouth by way of
Horseneck Road. Here you can explore some of the backcountry restaurants, as well as
Gooseberry Island another another well-known landmark (during World War II, a coastal
defense installation was raise on the island). Just across the Westport Harbor, be sure to
visit the Back Eddy for a four-star meal and music on the water. Lunch or late dinner will
surely not disappoint! If you love lobster, you may even get the chance to buy some fresh
ones from local lobster boats. Feeling more adventurous? Westport has you covered.
Explore the Westport River by kayak or paddleboard or venture to the local vineyards
and brewery for some relaxation.
TOWN PROFILES
TOWN PROFILES
For many years the flagpole in the park was the mizzen mast salvaged from the Wanderer after it was wrecked off Cuttyhunk in 1924. Across Water Street is the famous Meigs’
Tavern (now the Inn at Shipyard Park), built in 1800 by a shipyard owner Joseph Meigs.
At the entrance to the harbor stands Ned’s Point Light, constructed in 1837 by another
shipyard owner Leonard Hammond. To this day the light guides the way of returning
vessels into Mattapoisett’s busy harbor. Mattapoisett remains a thriving community with
schools, churches, stores, restaurants, banks, a library, museum, and a variety of businesses. In the summer the Mattapoisett Harbor is filled with hundreds of pleasure crafts.

Beyond the area’s mall, the South Coast is packed with one-of-a-kind
boutiques, noted art galleries, and antique shops that are a destination
in themselves. Some area clothing stores fill racks with merchandise
from unique designers, while others stock rare vintage finds. Jewelry
shops line cases with one-off pieces from both local and international
artists, while numerous art galleries and gift shops reflect the area’s
past with paintings and goods featuring beach themes and boat
scenes.

The Future of
New Bedford
In 2012, a state of the art splash pad was installed to provide an extensive
aquatic play area. Additional renovation to the park has included the restoration
of four tennis courts and new exhibits to expand the skateboard park. A key
component of the project included a revised parking plan to centralize parking
and create additional green space for passive recreation. The installation of a
new drainage system by the Department of Public Infrastructure has alleviated
many of the previous flooding issues on the site. A total of $550,000 in CDBG
funding has assisted with the Brooklawn Park redevelopment. The City’s
CDBG funding has also spurred private investment by the baseball and softball
leagues that have resulted in the installation of two new ball fields as well as a
new building to house a scoring booth, concession stand and restrooms.

THE FUTURE OF NEW BEDFORD
Acushnet Avenue International Marketplace – update:
The Acushnet Avenue International Marketplace project
is an initiative to redesign a section of Acushnet Avenue
from Coggeshall Street to Sawyer Street in Phase 1, in
a way that enhances the vibrancy of this key business
district. As a result of community support, planning and
public input, the Acushnet Avenue International Marketplace is moving forward.
The International Marketplace project includes traffic signal improvements, utility
upgrades and streetscape improvements, including: new lighting, attractive seating and planting areas, wider sidewalks, bump outs and bicycle accommodations
along Acushnet Avenue from Route 18 just south of Coggeshall Street to Beetle
Street.
Route 18 – update: (Now called JFK Boulevard); JFK Boulevard Phase 1 will be
completed this spring, linking historic downtown New Bedford, the New Bedford
Whaling National Historical Park, and the working waterfront.
Custom House Square – In 2012, the City received a $300,000 Gateway Urban
Parks Grant to build a park at Custom House Square. Scheduled to be complete
in the summer of 2013, the project will provide the desired green space, designed
by Stoss Landscape Urbanism, that has been missing from the downtown core
and become a public space for family recreation, farmers markets and other
public events.
84
Brooklawn Park - covers over 85 acres, from Acushnet Avenue to Ashley Boulevard and is used for sports and recreational activities for New Bedford residents to
enjoy.
Cliftex North – A $18 million historic preservation project, Acorn Management
also began construction to convert the Cliftex North Mill into 126 units of market rate housing with breathtaking riverfront views – their third project in New
Bedford.
South Terminal Project - In the 19th Century, New Bedford whalers sailed out
from our bustling harbor—the wealthiest and most productive in the nation—
upon the strong winds of the Atlantic coast. Today these winds are an abundant and inexhaustible resource driving the justification for the creation of the
offshore wind sector in America. New Bedford will be the epicenter of this new
sector, and in the decades to come, offshore wind can supply enough power to
supply electricity to more than 1 million homes.
In 2010 Governor Patrick announced that New Bedford would be the location
of the Marine Commerce Terminal—the first such terminal in the nation—a
State investment of up to $100 million, managed by the Massachusetts Clean
Energy Center, that will be able to deploy Cape Wind and a generation of offshore wind projects in Federal waters south of Martha’s Vineyard.
On May 6, 2013, the groundbreaking ceremony took place of the historic New
Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, a first-in-the-nation facility to support the
construction, assembly and deployment of offshore wind projects.
THE FUTURE OF NEW BEDFORD
Upper Harbor District – Rivers End Park will be completed this season and open for public access. Located
at the head of the Acushnet River, on River Street near
Tarkiln Hill Road, the park amenities include a walking a
path, picnic tables, and a playground.
Cliftex South – A $25 million dollar project under construction, the NBEDC
was instrumental in the purchase of the Cliftex Mill South for redevelopment.
The historic mill, located in the Upper Harbor Development District, will be converted into an affordable assisted living facility for low and moderate-income
residents.
