etween Florence and Lincoln City lies
the spectacular central Oregon coast,
blessed with long, sandy beaches, massive headlands, and picturesque lighthouses.
This part of the coast boasts numerous lodgings with dramatic ocean views. Its towns,
located 10 to 20 miles apart, provide a marvelous selection of places to stay and eat, ranging
from economical to elegant.
Many visitors came to Florence, Newport,
Depoe Bay, and Lincoln City as children
and now return with their own children.
They come to Florence to play in the dunes,
Newport to see the world-class Oregon Coast
Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science
Visitor Center, Depoe Bay for whale watching, and Lincoln City to fly kites at the D
River Wayside. Of course, these are only a few
of the many activities and sights available.

Florence
Westlake & Dunes City
Dunes City, located approximately 7 miles
south of Florence, includes Westlake on the
shores of Siltcoos Lake and communities near
Woahink Lake. Both lakes are popular for
fishing and water sports. Services include fishing lodges, public boat ramps, campsites, and
hiking and canoe trails.
Florence has two commercial districts:
Hwy 101 and historic Old Town. Both cater to
visitors, but Old Town, which sits right on the
Siuslaw River, does it with waterfront charm.
Unusual shops and galleries, historic buildings,
restaurants, and a harbor with fishing boats
greet visitors. Just east of town on Hwy 126 is
the Three Rivers Casino, with a new hotel,
casino, restaurants, and an entertainment venue.
The Oregon Dunes dominate Florence’s
landscape. A favorite for off-road vehicle users, hikers, birders, and sandboarders, the
towering dunes are a playground for the entire
family. Commercial operators offer guided
excursions and dune buggy rentals south of
town, and a sand park offers sand-boarding at
the north end of town.

Cape Perpetua
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area encompasses
2,700 acres within the Siuslaw National
Forest. In addition to a Sitka spruce rain
forest with many miles of hiking trails, tide
pools for exploring, and the informative Cape
Perpetua Visitor Center, the scenic area includes dramatic ocean views. The best views
are from the top of the cape, which is the
highest place on the Oregon coast that you
can drive to. While at Cape Perpetua, don’t
miss the CCC-built stone Overlook, Cooks
Chasm, and the spouting horns. The shore-

Park, with a large campground open yearround, is 3 miles south of Florence on Hwy
101. Two lakes are accessible within the
park—Cleawox, a great swimming spot, and
Woahink, popular with anglers and water
sports enthusiasts. The campground has
yurts, as well as a hiker/biker camp.
Golf in the dunes can be enjoyed at
Ocean Dunes Golf Links, an 18-hole, par 71
public course, and at Sandpines Golf Links,
an 18-hole, par 72 public course.
Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, located in
historic Old Town, preserves and displays artifacts and photographs from the region’s past.
Sea Lion Caves, 11 miles north of
Florence on Hwy 101, is the largest sea cave
in the world, home to a colony of Steller sea
lions. An elevator takes visitors 208 feet down
into the cave.
Heceta Head Lighthouse is 12 miles
north of Florence. The lighthouse, the most
photographed on the Oregon Coast, is easy
to see from turnouts off the highway. Both
the lighthouse and assistant lightkeeper’s
house are open for tours in the summer. The
Victorian-style house has been fully restored
and is now a bed-and-breakfast.

in its exhibits and interactive programs, many
geared for young people.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, located at the
south end of Newport, was built in 1871 and
decommissioned three years later. It was officially restored as a privately maintained working lighthouse in 1996. It is the only Oregon
lighthouse with attached living quarters and
the only wooden lighthouse still standing in
Oregon.
The Bayfront offers visitors an entertaining walking tour of a working waterfront.
Turn-of-the-century storefronts, chowder
houses, shops and galleries, and a busy commercial fishing fleet await the curious. A
variety of charter operators offer fishing and
whale-watching excursions. Among the attractions are the Undersea Gardens, Ripley’s
Believe It or Not, and the Wax Works.
Nye Beach was a major attraction on
the coast in the early 1900s, offering hot
sea baths, taffy stores, and agate shops. Nye
Beach is now a popular destination because
of its restaurants, galleries, shops, and unique
lodgings. Newport’s Performing Arts Center
and Visual Arts Center are located here.
Located approximately 7 miles east of
Newport along the Yaquina River, this historic community has become an artist mecca.
Along Toledo’s Main Street, shoppers enjoy
antique shops and art galleries. Six metal
sculpture benches line the street through
town. Don’t miss the Centennial Celebration
Mural, the largest outdoor mosaic tile mural
in the Northwest, located on Main Street.
At the Toledo History Center, visitors
enjoy a display of photographs and artifacts
showcasing the history of the town.
Yaquina Pacific Railroad Historical
Society, a group of rail fans, spearheaded installation of historic rail equipment for public
viewing, including a 1922 Baldwin steam locomotive named One Spot, a restored rail post
office car, and a 1907 caboose.
The 10,000-square-foot Toledo
Skatepark has been getting rave reviews from
skateboarders.
The brand new Port of Toledo Paddle
Park is a great place to launch a non-motorized boat, enjoy a picnic, or birdwatch.
Otter Rock
This small village sits at the base of Cape
Foulweather, approximately 8 miles north of
Newport. Devils Punch Bowl State Natural
Area, site of a collapsed sea cave, is nearby.
Tide pools are abundant and surfers and surf
watchers are drawn to the area.
The Flying Dutchman Winery, perched
on cliffs above the Pacific, offers handcrafted
wines in a boutique setting.
Depoe Bay
This charming community boasts the
smallest navigable harbor in the world. A seawall runs the length of downtown. Residents
proudly assert that Depoe Bay is the whalewatching capital of the Oregon Coast. About

Lincoln City
Five communities—Oceanlake, Delake,
Cutler City, Taft, and Nelscott—merged in
the mid-1960s to form this lively city. With 7
miles of sandy beaches and summer afternoon
winds, it is a favorite spot for flying kites; kite
festivals are held in spring, summer, and fall.
The community thrives with art galleries,
more than 100 antique dealers, theater, music
festivals, and family entertainment.
At the Jennifer L. Sears Glass Art Studio
visitors can observe free glassblowing demonstrations or learn the craft themselves by making glass floats or paperweights.
The Connie Hansen Garden was once
a private garden. Now the public can wander
along paths and over bridges to enjoy the collection of hybrid and exotic plants. Connie
Hansen Garden Conservancy maintains the
park, guides visitors, and conducts classes.
The Culinary Center in Lincoln City
shows attendees how to prepare the finest
Northwest cuisine.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort boasts
more than 1,200 slot machines, oceanfront
lodging, a renowned chef, and an 18-hole golf
course. Kids can explore the Play Palace and
Games Galore Arcade while adults try their

keno, and bingo. Top-notch comedy and music acts are scheduled throughout the year.
Tanger Outlets caters to shoppers with
more than 65 stores packed with designer
names and national brands.
Devils Lake accommodates every kind of
water sport and is stocked several times a year
with rainbow trout, making it popular with
anglers. Bass, perch, and bluegill are hooked
during regular derbies and tournaments.
Birders enjoy gliding by canoe or kayak. •
