Everyone loves the parade
at the World Championships®
at Crandon Raceway!
Forest County Fair to be on
September 5,6,7, and 8
September 5th is Entry Day!
Highway 8 meanders through the Wisconsin
northwoods like a stream, a conduit for logging trucks and
summer vacationers alike in the sparsely-populated
region. But once a year the smooth two-laner gets rerouted around the small town of Crandon (Pop. 1,961) so
the stars of the Traxxas TORC, presented by AMSOIL offroad racing series can park their 900-horsepower, 4,000pound trucks along the Crandon's business district on
Lake Ave. to kick off the World Championship® of off-road
racing at nearby Crandon International Off-Road Raceway.
Crandon's year 'round population nearly triples in size on
the Friday opening Labor Day Weekend as upwards of
5,000 people flood the town to check out the tricked-out
off-road race trucks and buggies and, best of all, to talk to
the drivers about the upcoming race weekend.
"The drivers really make the parade what it is,"
said Crandon's Cliff Flannery. "It's really something special
for the kids, to walk down main street in Crandon and be
able to talk to guy like Robby Gordon, Scott Taylor and the
Menzies Team drivers. They all do such a great job making
themselves accessible for the fans."
The annual parade down Crandon's main strip
took shape some 44 years ago when they first started
hosting short course off-road racing events in town - and
has been running strong, with few exceptions, ever since. "I
remember back the first year we had it a number of the old
cars broke down - during the parade," Flannery said
laughing. "They had a heck of a time. Couple over heated ...
one guy even lost his front bumper. But we've kept with it
over the years and it has become a really, really big event
for the town of Crandon."
Friday's (Aug. 30) Off-Road Parade begins bright
& early (8:30 a.m.) with a police escort of the massive offroad vehicles to the downtown business district. At the
same time the parade floats meet at the Fire Dept. on Lake
Avenue and begin staging. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. the race
teams compete in a number of skill events, including the
tire changing and truck push competitions. Then, at high
noon in Crandon, the fire whistle blows signaling the start
of the annual Off-Road Parade!
"The whole deal only lasts about four hours, but
the local businesses make more during that time than they
do all weekend," said Flannery of the astounding economic
impact to the Crandon downtown business district, also
noting the local Lions Club, Crandon Chamber of
Commerce and Northwoods Veteran's Center.
What: World Championship® of Traxxas TORC Series,
presented by AMSOIL - short course off-road truck racing the world's premier Baja-style off-road racing in a natural
stadium setting!
Who: Off-road racers from Baja to the Wisconsin
northwoods, the TORC Series showcases champion
drivers like Ricky Johnson, Wisconsin's own Johnny
Greaves and son CJ Greaves, Rob MacCachren, Scott
Douglas, FMX star Brian Deegan, Mike & Mark Jenkins and
Bryce Menzies.
Where: Crandon International Off-Road Raceway
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30th to Sept. 1
Off-Road Parade on Lake Ave: Friday, Aug. 30. Trucks
arrive at 9 a.m., parade begins at noon
Race Times: Gates open at 8 a.m., practice and qualifying
It is that time of year again when many of you are
busy planning what to enter in the Forest County Fair and
others are busy planning booths or possibly activities that
your organization will take part in. We are all very excited
and have planned a great celebration of our county,
communities and fall harvest for both children and adults.
This year’s fair is being held September 5th, 6th,
7th and 8th with September 5th being entry day. We will
also be holding some youth judging events on
Wednesday, September 4th in the evening. Buildings will
open at 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon so you can begin
placing your exhibits. We are asking all Open Class
Exhibitors to send their entry forms to Brenda Flannery at
206 W. Madison Street, Crandon, WI 54520 by Friday,
August 28th so your tags can be printed and ready for you
when you arrive on Thursday evening. Late entries will be
accepted but if you wait past September 3rd, you may
have to hand write your entry tags on Thursday evening
when you bring your exhibits in. Feel free to put down what
you plan on exhibiting as it is easier to remove an entry
than to add it later. We will accept entries on the evening of
the fair but we will not have a computer on site so you will
be responsible for hand writing your own entry tags and
turning in a correct copy of the entry listing so it can be put
in the computer prior to judges sheets being ran. If there
are errors in the department, class or lot that you list, your
exhibit will be judged for a ribbon but you will not receive a
premium so it is imperative that you ask questions if you
are unsure of where to enter an item. We encourage you to
submit your entries early so exhibits are entered correctly.
If anyone has any questions while filling out their
forms they can contact Brenda Flannery at 478-8802 and
she will help you through the process. Also, if any towns or
organizations are interested in setting up a booth please
contact Brenda as soon as possible so we can make
arrangements for you do so. 4-H & Youth entries should be
sent in to the UWExtension Office at 200 E. Madison St.,
Crandon, WI 54520. For more information on deadlines or
other questions, please contact Steve Nelson at 715-4782212.
This year, we are going back to our roots with an
old fashioned country fair theme. We will have many
activities centered around this theme. We look forward to a
lot of fun with judging Friday morning, the carnival kicking
off Friday afternoon, our talent contest and entertainment
by Special Moments DJ Service Friday evening. Saturday
we have many fun family activities planned as well as
various activities brought to you by the Forest County
Health Department, and Commission on Aging. It is also
wristband day so come for a fun day filled with family fun
and entertainment. Finally, Sunday’s entertainment
includes the Li’l Buckaroos Rodeo. Please watch for
detailed schedules! As always, there will be a lot of food,
fun and entertainment! We look forward to seeing you at
the fair!

The Trophy Karts are coming!
Crandon gets ready for
the world's fastest off-road go-karts
CRANDON, Wis., (Aug. 23, 2013) - The popular
west coast Trophy Kart (miniature single-seat race trucks)
movement is jumping the Mississippi and making its
inaugural full-gate race appearance at Crandon
International Off-Road Raceway's Labor Day Weekend offroad World Championship®.
Driven by kids ages ten to 15 years old, the 450cc (fourstroke) Japanese motorcycle company-powered vehicles
weighting 810-pound (w/ driver) are the latest way to
transition younger kids to the TORC PRO Buggy & PRO
Lite divisions - filling a void for especially the younger kids
to develop their racing skills.
"I'll tell you what, these little karts get after it," said
Crandon's Cliff Flannery. "They're a wonderful way to
introduce kids to short course off-road racing and are
pretty darn exciting to watch. Everyone at Crandon's
pumped they're making the trek out here from Nevada and
will definitely be a fun added feature for our fans next
weekend."
Healthy Harvest Day at the Forest
County Fair
Saturday, September 7th marks the first event of
a series of community wide strategies to improve the
health of Forest County. Forest County CAN! is hosting
the second annual Healthy Harvest Day at the Forest
County fairgrounds. Registration will start at 9:00 am. The
mile walk will start at 9:30 am and will be followed by
activities for all ages, including a Story Book Walk, Games,
and a Harvest Story. This is a free event and participants
will be eligible for prizes such as farmer’s market coupons
and fair ride tickets and more.
The goal of this event is to promote healthy eating
and physical activity. Two of our community’s current
health priorities are to increase adequate, appropriate,
and safe food and nutrition and physical activity county
wide. We wish to do this to decrease our county’s rates of
obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions, which are
higher within Forest County than they are in the state of
Wisconsin. Come make Forest County healthier and
participate in the Harvest Fun Walk/Run!
Sponsors of the event are Security Health Plan,
Molina Healthcare, United Healthcare, and Potawatomi
Carter Casino.

Dedication of the new Wabeno
Band Shell Saturday Aug. 31
Goodbye old band shell. You served the community well!
The dedication of the new Wabeno Band Shell
will on be held on Saturday, August 31st. For those not
familiar with the Wabeno Band Shell project, the old
original band shell succumbed to a freak, high wind that
toppled the Wabeno landmark, leaving everybody upset.
Wabeno is a community that enjoys it history and
culture, and they weren't going to go without a band shell.
Soon, there was an effort to raise funds to replace the
original band shell with a new, stronger and attractive
structure, which will be the new Wabeno landmark.
The festivities will begin with a flea market at
10:00 a.m. Music and dedication will be at 2:30 p.m.
There will, of course, be food and refreshments at this
historic event, and a bouncy house for kids. Starting at
6:00 p.m. there will be music by Iggy Rae Vicious and
fireworks at dusk.
The new Wabeno landmark, future home of many good times
Rolling Stone Lake P&R
Labor Day Picnic on Sunday
Rolling Stone Lake Protection & Rehabilitation
District is holding their annual Labor Day Picnic at the
Rolling Stone Lake P&R Building at the corner of Lake
Shore Road and Pickerel Lake Road in Pearson on
Sunday, September 1st. The fun begins at noon, and you
can keep having fun until 9:00 p.m.!
Besides some pretty good food, there are raffles
and a paddle wheel throughout the day. There will be live
music by "Lovin' Country" from 3-8:00 p.m.
Rummage salers should check out the rummage
sale beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, August 30th and
Saturday, August 31st. Some great baked goods are also
available.
The Red Arrow ATV/UTV
Parade and Corn Roast
The Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club invites one
and all to join them for their 7th Annual Corn Roast &
ATV/UTV Parade on Saturday, August 31st at 11:00 a.m.
until it is over!
The fun will be at Barb's Valley Inn on Hwy 32,
north of Townsend, where there will be music, food, meat
raffles and lots of sweet corn with beverages to wash it
down. There will be 15 big prizes.
The parade starts at the Shell station at 10:00 a.m.
and will end at Barb's Valley Inn. Come and have some
fun.
K-9 Rummage Sale in Wabeno
The Wabeno Firefighter's Park (the fairgrounds)
will be the site of our Labor Day Rummage Sale. We would
like this to build into a community event, with all proceeds
to go to Officer Ashbeck and Officer Dutch. They both
work very hard to keep our communities safe, and they
have helped with several search and rescues.
We are looking for volunteers to help set up the
sale on August 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the park,
and to help take it down on September 1st, starting at
noon.

Footstock final results
Crandon, Wisconsin – For the
second year in a row, mother
nature wreaked havoc on
Footstock, the nation’s most
prestigious endurance
barefoot competition in
Crandon, Wisconsin.
Over 120 skiers from as far
south as Florida and as far
north as Canada, made the
annual pilgrimage to the
Northwoods of Wisconsin to
ski in this year’s 25th
anniversary event. But what
they encountered was not the
glass calm water that endurance barefooters typically prefer. Instead, they saw 15-25 mph
southwest winds pummel the famed “Chetek Corner,” the huge looping ½ mile turn on the
backside of Peshtigo Lake, making the chance of anyone completing a figure eight almost
impossible.
In the end though, neither runner-up Chad Mietz nor mother nature could derail
endurance barefoot phenomenon Peter Fleck of Orlando Florida, as he cruised unbeaten
all weekend to win both the National Seniors and Open Barefoot Titles. The conditions
being so rough, that only three figure eights were completed all weekend, two at the end of
Saturday and only one on Sunday-the last run of the day. That decided the Championship.
The rough water also had a major impact on some of the perennial favorites as
most struggled to even get to the backside of the tough mile and a half course. Past
champion Ron Blouw was knocked out before reaching the Top 20 and favorite Marc
Donahue of Indiana could do no better than 6th.

FOOTSTOCK CONTINUTED FROM LEFT.....
But the weather did reveal the strength of some up and coming skiers that could soon
challenge Fleck for the Open title. Besides the “iron man” Mietz who took second in both
the Seniors and Open division for the second year in a row, hometown skier, Jacob Weber
made his presence known in the Open Division by steamrolling the field to take third, his
best finish ever. Former hometown skier, Greg Fatla took an impressive 5th and the surprise
of the championship might have been the showing of Minnesota barefooter Kyle Kazle.
After not even cracking the Top 40. Kazle dominated in the rough water and consistently
pulled off some of the longest runs of the tournament before taking home 4th place in the
Open.
But in the end, even with Barefoot Central’s $1,000 bounty on his head, (offered to
any skiers who could beat him), Fleck was unstoppable and was the only man to not suffer
a fall all weekend.
“It was brutal out there Sunday,” noted Tournament Director, Jacob Weber. “As
soon as you made the first turn it was just constant waves. On Sunday, the tournament
definitely changed from endurance to survival out there. ”
The weekend also was a coming out party of sorts for eventual Women’s Champ,
Haley Gibbon who not only roared through her division, but knocked off some men in the
Open as well. As did 2nd place women’s barefooter Victoria Wiesner, who also showed her
toughness in some long runs on the rough water course.
In the Master’s Division, Canadian barefooter, Wayne King of Manitoba defended
his title by beating Michigan’s Dave Hopkins twice in a row in the finals.
In the Junior Division, Isaac Aukee and Brody Meskers showed why the future is
bright for them as well, as they battled it out for first and second, respectively. Meskers also
had his best finish in the Open, placing an impressive 7th.
The Best of the Worst crown went to Joel Kehl.
In all, over 265 runs were pulled in two days and $7,500 in prize money was
awarded.

Resource Guide
The time immediately following the death of a loved one can be overwhelming, with
grief and bereavement complicated by a seemingly endless number of tasks. The immediate
days following the death will be focused on the funeral or memorial service arrangements.
Soon after, however, various financial and legal issues must be addressed. Many people find
it very difficult to be sure they have taken care of everything. The following is a list of tasks
that are likely to need attention:
If your loved one was a veteran, you may be able to get assistance with the funeral,
burial plot, or other benefits. Contact your local office for a phone number and assistance.
Obtain 10-15 copies of the Death Certificate from your funeral director.
Notify your local Social Security office of the death, since these benefits will stop.
Overpayments will result in a difficult process or repayment. If you are a surviving spouse,
ask about your eligibility for increased benefits.
Contact the health insurance company for all life insurance policies. You will need
to provide the policy number and a certified of the death certificate and fill out a claim form. If
the deceased is listed as the beneficiary on any policy, arrange to have the name removed.
If the deceased was working, contact the employer for information on pensions
plans, credit unions and union death benefits. You will need a certified copy of the death
certificate for each claim.
Return credit cards of the deceased with a certified copy of the death certificate or
notify the credit card company if you , as the survivor, want to retain use of the card.
Seek the advice of an accountant or tax advisor about filing the deceased’s tax
return for the year of the death. Keep monthly bank statements on all individual and joint
accounts that show the account balance on the day of the death, since you will need this
information for the estate tax return.
Arrange to change any joint bank accounts into your name. If the deceased’s estate
is in trust , check with the Trust Department or Customer Service at the bank.
Arrange to change stocks and bonds into your name. Your bank or stockbroker will
have the forms.
Make sure that important bills, such as mortgage payments, continue to be paid.
Documents you may need to complete the tasks: •Death Certificates (10-15 certified
copies)•Social Security Card•Marriage Certificate•Birth Certificate•Insurance Policies
•Deed and Titles to Property•Stock Certificates•Bank Books •Veteran papers ( if
applicable)•Recent Income Tax Forms and W-2 Forms•Automobile Title and Registration
Papers•Loan and Installment Payment Books and /or Contracts.

Don’t forget to visit the Crandon Farmers’ Market
every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. near the

for a raised garden bed kit. There will be information
activities each week for kids and adults. Support your
local growers and your health by buying fresh foods at the
market.
And you might want to consider making some
extra cash by growing fruits and vegetables and setting up
at the Farmer's Market. Many communities have large
farmer's markets, that promote fresh food grown locally. If
you have too much in your garden this year for your own
consumption, you might want to bring a chair and a card
table and be a "farmer."

Tickets: Per Day $25, kids 12 + under/adults 75 and older

With racers and trucks/buggies, crews and offroad fans converging from all points on the U.S. map, the
small logging town of Crandon, Wisc., (population: 1,961)
is awash in activity. And since 1970 the off-road
phenomenon has played out in Crandon, making it the
nation's longest-running short course off-road
competition.
The Nicolet College Learning in Retirement program is launching its 2013 Fall session with more than 30 different
just-for-the-fun-of-it learning opportunities.
The Fall Kick-off, which is open to the public, will take place Thursday, September 5th, in the Learning Resources
Center on the Nicolet Campus one mile south of Rhinelander just off of Hwy. G.
The event will start with a social hour at 4:30 p.m., the spirit-bolstering Believe in Yourself presentation at 5 p.m.,
and dinner at 6 p.m.
Cost is $11 for members and $13 for guests. To register, call Nicolet at (715) 365-4491, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4491:
TDD (715) 365-4448. Registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 30.
Classes begin Monday, September 9. Upcoming topics include Cuba: A Trip Back in Time, Bicycling the Czech
Republic, the popular Ced’s Nature Series, TED Talks, Brain Health – the Last Frontier, Roots of Religion, LIR Chorus, and
numerous others.
“Any of these offerings is a great way for active retirees to learn new things and meet new people,” said Nancy
Brissee, Nicolet LIR community representative. “The whole point is to have fun and stay active and every class offers the
opportunity to do exactly that.”
Classes will be held throughout the Northwoods in Rhinelander, Tomahawk, Crandon, Three Lakes, Eagle River,
and Minocqua. Some classes will meet just once while others are held once a week over the course of months.
About 300 Northwoods retirees belong to the organization.
The LIR annual membership is $35. Members can take as many or as few classes as they desire. There are no tests
or grades in any class - only learning just for the fun of it. For more information about the LIR or a complete class list, contact
the Nicolet College Learning in Retirement Office at (715) 365-4491 or 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4491: TDD (715) 365-4448.
The full list of Winter/Spring classes can also be found on the web at nicoletcollege.edu.

The family of Mary Lou Smith would like to thank all
who showed love and support during our mothers
passing. Whether it was a card, words of
condolences, money, plants, flowers, food or gifts, it
was all very much appreciated.
The tremendous show of support was
overwhelming to us and we know our mother was loved
by a lot of people. We are fortunate to live in a
community of caring people and we definitely saw this
during this difficult time.
There are so many to thank who made Mom's three
year battle with cancer bearable. The visits, prayers,
cards, words of encouragement were so much
appreciated by Mom and her family.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the
Crandon Nursing Home who became part of Mom's
extended family. The compassion, the care and the
love shown was overwhelming to us and will never be
forgotten.
We would also like to thank Dr. Koeppl who went
above and beyond to meet her needs and keep her
comfortable.
We know our Mom is in Heaven now and we can only
hope and pray we will see her there when our time
comes.

School districts across the state are finding it
increasingly difficult to hire and retain sufficient numbers of
qualified substitute teachers. In an attempt to deal with this
issue, Wisconsin enacted a rule allowing school districts to
hire non-certified teacher substitutes. To be issued a
permit, however, these individuals must hold a (four year)
bachelor's degree, receive appropriate training, and be
sponsored by a school district.
CESA 8 is offering Substitute Teacher Training
Seminar presented by Sherry Petersen and Sandy
Mayernick, Department of Public Instruction (DPI)
endorsed instructors and active substitute teachers. This
one day, comprehensive program will be held on Tuesday,
September 24, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the
CESA 8 Office, 223 West Park Street, Gillett, WI 54124. This
hands-on training presents a positive, honest, and
accurate account of what it really means to be a substitute
teacher! Pertinent topics include, discipline/management
techniques, important health and safety information,
expectations from the classroom teacher, special
education concerns, and sample emergency lesson plans,
with time allowed for networking and questions from
participants. The application process is also explained.
For further information or to register, please logon
to www.myQuickReg.com. Registration deadline is
September 17, 2013 or when the class is full. This program
will fulfill DPI’s requirement of training for a person with a
Bachelor’s Degree (but not a teaching degree) and will

Vet's Corner
(Army News Service, July 8, 2013) -- Beginning Aug. 1, 2013, every Soldier who elects to transfer their Post-9/11
GI Bill benefits to a family member will incur an additional four years in the Army, without regard to their time in service.
The policy already applies to nearly every Soldier in the Army -- and has since the beginning of transferability in
2009. Until now, Soldiers who were nearing retirement were eligible for certain exemptions from the policy. That will no
longer be the case. This policy change affects them.
"This policy was drafted in 2009 and takes effect Aug. 1, 2013. It is important that we inform Soldiers of this
existing policy regarding the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits," said Lt. Col. Mark Viney, chief of the Enlisted Professional
Development Branch, Army G-1.
That news comes in a message to military personnel, dated April 15, 2013.
The rule largely affects senior officers and enlisted Soldiers who are retirement-eligible. As of now, these Soldiers
may be able to transfer benefits to their loved ones with anywhere from zero to three years of additional service.
Soldiers who are not retirement eligible, electing to transfer their GI Bill benefits to a family member means
committing for an additional four years.
Beginning Aug. 1 that rule will apply to all Soldiers, whether they are retirement-eligible or not.
"The Post-9/11 GI Bill. Soldiers are entitled to the benefit for their own use, but to transfer to dependents: that is
used as a recruiting and retention tool," said Lt. Col. Mark Viney, chief of the Enlisted Professional Development Branch,
Army G-1.
Viney also serves as the policy proponent for the Army's Post-9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Education Benefits Program.
"We want Soldiers to be informed of the impact of this policy," Viney said. "This is going to impact their decisions
and their families, and whether or not they are going to have this money available to fund their dependent's education."
Veterans Affairs, or VA, also has eligibility requirements for transferability. A Soldier must have six years of active
duty in order to transfer his GI Bill benefits.
In some cases, if a Soldier has incurred additional time in service in order to transfer GI Bill benefits to a family
member, and is afterward unable to serve that additional time in service, he or she may be required to pay back those
benefits.
Viney said that as the Army draws down, some Soldiers will be involuntarily separated under force-shaping
initiatives. Soldiers who are separated early under such circumstances and who had previously transferred their Post-9/11
GI Bill education benefits to their dependents may retain the transferred benefits, without needing to repay them to the VA.
Soldiers who were retirement eligible after August 1, 2009 and before August 1, 2012 and who are considering
transferring their benefits to their dependents should review their service obligation before doing so. All Soldiers will incur
a four-year service obligation after August 1, 2013 if they transfer their benefits to their dependents.
Soldiers with questions about transferring their Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits to their dependents should
contact their approving official.

Scott Taylor calls
it a career
Taylor's been competing at Crandon since 1973 and
will suit up one more time to contest the AMSOIL Cup race
in his trademark Exxon Tiger truck
CRANDON, Wis., (Aug. 22, 2013) - One of the more
familiar faces in the history of short course off-road racing at
Crandon International Off-Road Raceway will be calling it a
career next weekend when Illinois' Scott Taylor (Miller
Electric/AMSOIL/BFG) suits up to race his final contest on
Sunday (Sept. 1), the fourth annual AMSOIL Cup Heavy
Metal Challenge.
The multi-time PRO 2WD champion (SODA, CORR,
WSORR & TORC) will turn the reigns of his TORC Series
PRO 2 truck to Dan McMillan, who will drive Taylor's truck
with his (McMillan's) body in both Saturday and Sunday's
PRO 2 feature events. But for Friday's parade Taylor has one
more treat in store for the fans ... he's breaking out the black
tiger truck from the Exxon Super Flow days and will race 'er
one last time in Sunday's finale AMSOIL Cup race.
Said Taylor, 57, with a bit of a quiver in his voice:
"That's gonna be the end of my deal right there."
Taylor's storied race career began more than 40
years ago near his hometown of Belvidere, Ill., when he
scored a podium 3rd place finish in his first-ever off-road
contest. Saying "Hey, I've got something going on here,"
Taylor would continue to race throughout the summer and,
as he put it, "won races left and right." During this time he
would hear about the racing that just began ('71) up here at
Crandon and decided to make the trek up to the Wisconsin
northwoods event in the fall of 1973.
"The first time I made it to Crandon I remember
hauling my race car up there on an open trailer behind my
everyday car," said Taylor. "I got there and went straight to
tech (inspection) in downtown Crandon and the race
officials looked in the back of my trailer and said 'Yep, there it
is - here you go.' And there I went - off to race." Noteworthy:
Taylor would make the podium with a "2nd or 3rd," he said at
his inaugural race at Crandon.
Things were certainly a bit different back then
compared to what today's Crandon Raceway looks like, as
Taylor recalls: "In all honesty I really don't remember much
about that first race at Crandon. It was 40 years ago and, of
course, we were running the Brush Run 101, over logs and
boulders and through mud, the woods. I remember it just
being a grueling deal. And then every year after that it was
the same thing, until they moved the track in 1984."
"I can remember going through the big water holes
and the motorcycle gangs where there, drinking beer and
fighting and carrying on. But I'll be darned if you managed to
get stuck while you were going through there (and) they'd
stop what they were doing and help push you out of the mud.
I mean it was pretty primitive back then, but it was a lot of fun.
And those days will never be recreated these days because
things were just done a lot differently back then."
Taylor broke up his car pretty good in the process
of racing that first season, so he built another car the
following year, a single seater that, according to Taylor:
"Nobody could touch." He traveled all over North America
that summer, racing from California to Canada with, of
course, a stop at Crandon in between.
"It just turned into being quite a deal," he said.
With a heavy accelerator foot and a keen sense of
racing tactics that allowed him to keep it on that fine line
between being on the edge and out-of-control, Taylor would
continue to win - and win big - as he raced throughout the
country in the coming decades. But it was the 2002 year that
stands out the most at Crandon Raceway as Taylor's fondest
memory at the famous Crandon Raceway.
"That year I won the Governor's Cup in the spring, I
won the BorgWarner Cup in the fall and won the
championship. So obviously that'd be pretty hard to top,"
said Taylor. "It was just an awesome time. The folks at
Crandon have been personal close friends of mine for many,
many years and we've just enjoyed going up there so much.
It's really just indescribable."
Taylor said this coming weekend, understandably,
is going to be an emotional one for him. One of the all-time
favorite drivers of the legions of Crandon faithful, Taylor
explains that he's moving forward at a pace with his
engineering business that's equal to that of his hardcharging racing career.
"I'm so busy right now with making parts for the
airline and snowmobile industries that I'm going to
concentrate to that, and more than likely just stick to my
retirement program here - maybe come to a few races now
and then," he said. "But other than that I don't see myself
coming back to it like how I've been involved the last 40
years.
"There just comes a time."

Northwoods Model A Club visits Crandon
It was a remarkable sight when this group of Ford Model A aficionados pulled
into the Hotel Crandon for lunch recently. There were more of the old Fords that were
built between 1928 and 1931 scattered around besides this lineup of cars. There hasn't
been that many Ford Model A autos on Crandon streets at one time since the 1930's.
