More than 200 attendees enjoyed a day of barks, brews, and
bands at the River Rat Brewery on October 11th.
Jet Lag Jones entertained our guests of all ages (two legged
& four legged) and the fun didn’t stop there! The silent
auction included items from doggie goodie baskets, golf
packages and an amazing painting by local artist Mark
McLaughlin. There was face painting for the kids, and even a
few adults! Thank you to SQ Rescue for attending with dogs
looking for forever families.
Our 2014 event raised over $6,000 thanks to our wonderful
sponsors and energetic attendees.

Employee Spotlight
Erin Smith is the newest addition to the Humane Society family. Erin has worked
in nonprofit for 10 years. As Director of Public Support, Erin will be educating the
community about the Humane Society through planning special events, fundraising,
and community outreach. Since starting in August, Erin has hit the ground running.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A:
I love getting the word out about the Humane Society’s services in an exciting way. With
events like See Spot Run and Woofstock, I am able to highlight the important work that we
do in a way that the entire family can enjoy.
Q: What do you wish people knew about the Humane Society?
A:
I wish everyone knew about how easy and inexpensive it is to have your pet spayed or neutered at the Humane
Society. The high cost of surgery can hinder people from having their animals altered. This fuels the fire of animal
overpopulation. Our clinic provides the most affordable prices around and there are specials every month!
Q:
What do you enjoy when you aren’t at work?
A:
I enjoy cooking and grilling out. I love music and going to concerts. On Saturday you can find our family enjoying
Gamecock football!
Q:
Do you have any pets of your own? If so, what are they?
A:
I do! Buster is an 11 year old pug mix; Willie is a 10 year old lemon beagle, and Sassy is an 11 month old tabby cat, and
her name fits! All of our family’s animals are rescued, and spoiled rotten.
PetSmart Charities® Grant Helps Spay
and Neuter More the 1,700 Animals
The Humane Society was awarded a grant from PetSmart Charities® of $66,000 to
use during 2013 and 2014 to provide free spay and neuter surgeries for residents
of Gaston and Swansea. Thanks to PetSmart Charities®, the Humane Society was
able to sterilize more than 1,700 animals in these two rural Lexington County
communities. With this generous grant, the Humane Society was able to have
a positive impact on the number of animals picked up, surrendered and
ultimately euthanized by Lexington County Animal Services.
The high cost of spay and neuter can prevent people from having their
pets altered. This grant provided funds to spay and neuter animals in two
communities where more than 15% of its population lives at or below the
national poverty level.
The Humane Society strives to ensure that cost doesn’t inhibit pet
owners from having their pets spayed or neutered. We have the
lowest priced surgeries in South Carolina, and have monthly specials
to save pet owners even more!

Declawing: The Ugly Truth
People often mistakenly believe that declawing their cats is a harmless way to prevent unwanted scratching.
Your cat may think that new leather sofa, comfy recliner or corner of the upstairs banister is just the thing to
scratch on. What most don’t realize is that declawing is an unnecessary and painful procedure that can cause
many more problems than it solves.
What is declawing?
Many people think that declawing is a simple surgical
removal of a cat’s nails. That misconception is far from the
truth. Declawing involves the amputation of the last bone of
each toe. If this was done on a human being’s hand, it would
be comparable to cutting off each finger at the last knuckle.
Many countries have banned declawing. The Humane
Society opposes declawing except for the rare cases when
it is necessary for medical purposes, such as the removal of
cancerous nail bed tumors.
What problems will declawing cause my cat?
Cats are digitigrade mammals, meaning they walk on their
toes. Declawing changes the way a cat walks and affects
a cat’s entire body. It is painful and can cause chronic
nerve pain, infection, changes in gait, and chronic back
pain. It also causes behavioral changes. A cat’s claws are
its primary defense against animals that would harm him.
Lacking claws, it may turn to biting to defend itself if feeling
threatened. Because they do not have the ability to defend
themselves, some cats turn to reclusive behavior and may
hide or shy away from activity. Declawing can make a cat
less likely to use the litter box because of nerve pain in its
paws. This behavior can be very damaging to the home.
But my cat is scratching everything!
There are many alternatives to this inhumane practice to prevent damage to your home and your
feline family member.
Nail Trimming - Cats are unlikely to do serious damage with blunt
nails. Trimming may sound a bit scary, but your cat will soon find out
it’s not to be feared. Simply lightly squeeze the cat’s toe to extend the
nail tip, and snip the tip. You can buy clippers at any pet supply store. Be
careful not to cut into the quick of the nail. If you’re hesitant about doing this yourself, ask your veterinarian or come by the Humane Society
and we can teach you. It’s a lot less expensive than declawing, and a lot
easier on the cat and your conscience.
S cratching Posts – Scratching is a natural cat behavior, so giving
your cat an alternative to your curtains and upholstery is very
important. Sisal-covered posts are highly favored by many cats.
Most cats can be easily trained to use the post instead of your
furniture. Many cats enjoy having several surfaces and elevations
(vertical, horizontal and plane.) Fortunately, one of the most popular
surfaces is cardboard, and inexpensive cardboard scratching posts
are easy to come by. If one post doesn’t work, don’t give up. Offer
kitty a variety of surfaces and elevations, and he will soon choose his
favorites. Rub on a little catnip, and your cat won’t be able to resist.
Your sofa will surely be relieved. Soft Paws® - Soft Paws® are vinyl nail caps which glue over a cat’s
claws. They come in clear or colors. Your cat might look great
sporting a pink pedicure or red and green for the holiday season.
The caps grow out with the natural growth of your cat’s nails, and
are advertized to last four to six weeks.
Declawing your cat is a harmful medically unnecessary
procedure that should be avoided. Unwanted scratching
behaviors can be dealt with without the damaging effects
of declawing. Providing alternative scratching surfaces,
nail trimming, and nail caps can be used to make your
feline family member happier and healthier.

For the Love of Paws!
An event to benefit the Humane Society
The Humane Society would like to say a special thank you to the wonderful students of the Festival
Planning and Management class at the University of South Carolina. These students organized
a music event called the “For the Love of Paws” on November 16th at the Tin Roof in Columbia.
Musical guests included Waccamaw; Barry Michaels; and The Cocktails with a special guest
appearance by Cocky! Thank you to Mrs. Annette Hoover, professor for the University of South
Carolina’s Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management department who led the students through
the steps of planning a fundraising event. “The students as a class select a charity of their choice,
secure a location, choose a theme, pick entertainment, and acquire sponsors. The students this
year worked extremely hard, and it showed!” said Hoover. The 50 students in the class helped raise
awareness on campus and throughout the community through “For the Love of Paws.”
