high levels of light without glare.
Economical daylighting design should
provide adequate light levels so that
daylight is the main/only light source
during daytime. Balanced daylight
is desirable for visual comfort and
performance.
Ventilation freshens up the air inside
buildings to achieve and maintain good
air quality and thermal comfort. Opening
skylights used with open windows are
the easiest way to remove stale, moist
air and bring in fresh air. Good indoor

Daylighting solutions for any situation
Research by the Danish Building
Research Institute has shown that,
under similar conditions, skylights
provide at least twice as much
daylight as vertical windows of the
same size.
Key findings of a climate based
daylight analysis by the Institute of
Energy and Sustainable Development
at De Montfort University (UK) have
shown the following:

invariably improves daylight
performance. The addition of
skylights led to an increase in
daylight availability from 12%
to 45% of the year.

on the roof, would enter through the
roof space and down to the room. The
answer is simple – via a light shaft.
When a view to the outside is not
desired or the installation of a skylight
