Paschal Sherman Indian School Omak, Washington Project Value: $16.5 Million Date Awarded: April 2001 Date Completed: December 2004 Architect: ALSC Architects Client Reference: Colville Confederated Tribes Virgil Marchand 509.634.2200 Combining the cultural heritage of 12 Native American Tribes, the Paschal Sherman Indian School in Omak, Washington, provides an educational facility and dormitory for the Colville Confederated Tribes. Garco along with ALSC Architects designed and constructed the 100,000 SF complex which houses students from kindergarten thru the 9th grade. Nestled in the hills near Lake Omak in central Washington, the architectural design draws upon the forms of indigenous structures and the natural environment. The two-story Cultural Center is the heart of the facility, featuring a terrazzo entrance and salmon solar clock surrounded by a glass wall and skylight. The salmon clock is formed by metal salmon spiraling to the sky and reflects shadows on the adjacent wall. Throughout the day the shadow will have characteristics of a coyote; the salmon and coyote are of primary importance culturally to the Tribes. The facility provides administrative areas, classrooms, a wood shop, science lab, gymnasium and a stage. The facility also includes a 21,000 SF dormitory designed to accommodate up to 100 students year around. The exterior of the building integrates natural materials and a muted color palette through the use of stone, wood and native vegetation throughout the landscape. The 40 acre site was developed to include soccer, baseball, softball and football playfields and an athletic track.
