Satie not only was careful to keep his childhood near as an inspiration all his life, but all his music is, in a sense, children’s music. One 2 critic wrote that his sophistication was the deliberate retention of childlike elements and humor as a mask for the boldness of his innovation in the knowledge they would leave their imprint on modern music. FINE $200 Sir Peter Blake (1932-) is one of England’s most prominent pop artists, a graphic designer and postmodernist. A problem facing late 20 th century artists and writers is that so much had been done already. W e have examined postmodernism in past catalogs and some answers to this problem, particularly the exploration of themes suggested by modern science, such as string theory; or by altering the traditional narrative frame, for example by making the reader a protagonist. Another solution is the juxtaposition of selected elements from different periods and cultures. As Donald Barthelme remarks in his 1971 short story, The Genius : Q: What do you consider the most important tool of the genius of today? A: Rubber cement. 37. Blake, Peter. An Alphabet. Bokom Gagga Sicksack och Fredrik (Swedish, Book about Gaga, Zigzag, and Fredrik). Stockholm, 1949, 1 st, Almqvist & W iksell. Cloth spine, pict bds, 9x11, 32p, no dw. A Danish copy of this book appeared as item 51 in our Scandinavian Catalog. BrobyJohansen was a Danish activist writer and artist. His first book in 1922 was confiscated by the police. Later he became a champion of art education for all. A picture book of stories with brilliant use of color focused on playing in traffic. However, at that time Swedes 8 drove on the left and Danes on the right. This is handled with a terrific twopage spread which can be read from top or bottom. This copy came with a sheet of letters in the book’s cover typeface on a black field with a note that the cover can be personalized with a child’s name by sticking the letters on the cover in the black space at the top of the traffic light. Some of the letters remain. GOOD $75 57. Brontë, Charlotte (1816-1855). The Search after Hapiness. NY, 1969, 1stUS, S&S. Pict cloth, 6x8, 48p, DW . Attractive full color illustrations by Carolyn Dinan. As a result of the early death of their two older sisters from the rigors of a charity boarding school, the younger Brontë children were isolated at home for the most of their education. Charlotte was nine at the time. Left to themselves and the moors, they developed their enormously fertile imaginations, entertaining one another with made-up stories. They were accustomed to copy these out in very tiny writing. Branwell got 2500 words on a single 5"x7" page. This book, written in 1828 when Charlotte was 13, but here published for the first time, is altogether more satisfying than any other book-by-a-child we have read. A nobleman becomes downcast in his own country and undertakes a quest, leading to enlightenment. FINE $24 58. Brooks, Bruce. The Moves Make the Man (signed) Newbery Honor. NY, 1984, 4th, Harper & Row. Cloth spine, bds, 5¾x8¼, 280p, DW . Author’s first book is a great middle school sports metaphor centered on basketball. . FINE $24 59. Brow n, Jeff /Tom i Ungerer. Flat Stanley. NY, 1964, repr, Harper & Row. Cloth, 7¼x9¼, 48p, DW , XL, few marks. Stanley is squashed flat as a pancake when his bulletin board falls on him, causing him to find some creative solutions to his new problems. Good fun. A recent grammar school activity in the US is having children make a flat doll of themselves for mailing to family and friends all over the world during a year. After which the results are returned to the child and compared in class. VG $12 60. Brow n, Marcia. The Blue Jackal. NY, 1977, 1st, Scribner's. Cloth, 8½x10, c 32p, DW . From the same Indian folk tale source as Once a Mouse, and also with woodcuts by the author. FINE $30 M argaret W ise Brown (1910-1952) is the most important American author for young children of our time, a result of her native gifts as well as the intense effort she put into understanding how children respond to stories. Neither she nor Lucy Sprague M itchell at the Bank Street School were the first to realize the importance of child interaction with children’s literature, but Brown was the first to exploit this insight. Like e.e. cummings, who also exerted prodigious effort on each poem, Brown's genius can easily be overlooked or trivialized by amateurs. 61. Brow n, Margaret Wise. The Fish with the Deep Sea Smile. NY, (Dutton) 1938, 1988 Linnet reprint. Illus by Roberta Brown Rausch, the author's sister. Cloth, 6x9, 128p, DW . Bader says, "Come upon unawares, it seemed to me the most breathtaking picturebook I'd ever seen." From the original dust jacket flap: "Fire! Fire! Fire! This is no false alarm. A dashing story about the little fireman who saves fifteen little fat ladies, splashes out a blaze, and returns triumphant to his pink ice cream and bed. Hosefulls of color by a brilliant new Russian artist.” Cattermole was instrumental in bringing this title back into print, and we are pleased with the result. FINE $32 64. FINE $20 65. Brow ne, Anthony. The Shape Game. NY, 2003, 1 st US, FSG. Glossy boards, 11x11, c. 32p, DW . We love this book, which is a sort of memoir, of when Brow ne’s family took their mom to an art museum one time. It changed his life. It is a pretty funny book, about observing, which is, of course, what artists do. There is even an amusing self-portrait of Peter Blake, who looks a bit like the author’s dad. On the way home, mom teaches the family what she calls the shape game, where one person starts a sketch and then passes it to the next to add something, making it different. The author remarks he’s been playing the shape game ever since. AS NEW $20 66. Burningham, John. Come Away From the Water, Shirley. NY, 1977, 1 st US, Crowell. Pictorial boards, 11x9, c. 32p, no dw. Paperback reprint of the 1950 revised edition. Calico is not very pretty, but she’s the sm artest horse in Cactus County. She received the IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1978, and a Newbery Medal for The Slave Dancer. James Joyce said that all authors have only one story, which they tell again and again. As the brilliant critic, Joan Acocella, remarked in The New Yorker last year, this is perhaps more true for Fox than most other writers. She had the most appalling childhood. Her Cuban mother, married to a drunken playwright had 4 abortions before she left it too late in Paula’s case. The girl was given for adoption a few days after birth, but was rescued by her Cuban grandmother. She grew up with a succession of foster parents. She recalled that while living with her parents for a week at the age of five, if her mother could have gotten away with it, she would of murdered her. Some years later she moved in with her father in New York City and he promptly went on a drunk and left her alone for two weeks. She overcame this background to finally attend Columbia, where she met and married the critic Martin Greenberg with whom she had two children. 158. Fox, Paula. Amzat and His Brothers. FINE $45 The Tiffany Aching quartet is a story arc, set in Discworld, but far different in content and intent from others in that group. It is a great children’s series, superior to the Harry Potter books and presents one of the most striking examples of a Bildungsroman, ( in which the protagonist is seen to mature in response to the events of the novel) in modern literature. For we witness Tiffany become a witch, although it’s scarcely what we expect. Remarkably, the four books which chronicle events beginning in her ninth, eleventh, thirteenth and fifteenth years can be read in any order. Each stands alone, as a complete, satisfying narrative. W e started with the third, Wintersmith, and thought it one of best children’s books we’d ever read. The first, which anchors the series, The Wee Free Men, appears in several costumes (see below). It is a brilliant, experimental book. There is a quality called transference in literature by which magic a writer engages his reader’s sympathy with a character and thereby develops an interest in the working out of the story. Yet, Pratchett, intentionally suspends this magic in the penultimate section to signal the dream state in which Tiffany finds herself during her escape from 43 fairyland. W e did not find it comfortable, but are amazed that the author is bold enough to take this sort of risk. Tiffany is one of the most engaging characters to be encountered in literature. Suitable for reading to an alert 8-year-old. 349. Pratchett, Terry. The W ee Free Men (Signed on tp). London, 2003, 1 st, Doubleday. Bds, 6x8, 320p, DW (£12.99). Illustrated by Paul Kidby. FINE $120 Slotties Probably W alter Paepcke’s (1896-1960) interest in cardboard toys was stimulated by the great lack of any other sort of toys during W W II. He was a wealthy American from Chicago who owned the Container Corporation of America (Concora) which manufactured cardboard packaging materials and under Paepske became a patron of graphic arts and design. He also founded the Aspen Institute and brought Herbert Bayer to America in 1939 from the Bauhaus to design posters and other materials. Paepcke and his wife had a keen interest in modern art and a large private collection. They supported László Moholy-Nagy, a colleague of Bayer’s, by financing the rebirth of the American New Bauhaus in 1939. Suzanne Suba (1913-) was born in Hungary, but came to the US as a child. She studied at the Friends School in Brooklyn NY, and Pratt Institute. She was a New Yorker cover artist and book designer. Her first book, Here Comes the Circus, 1942, won an AIGA. She was living in Chicago, working and teaching at the Chicago 49 Institute of Art, with her husband Russell McCracken, when they met Paepcke. They designed the slotties in 1944; a book with a punch-out cardboard toy at the back for making characters to act out the stories. She would eventually provide art for nine of the nineteen slotties. Two of these were paperback slotties for advertising purposes, published by Kellogg and the New York Central Railroad. An exact contemporary, also an emigrant (from Germany) was Jan Balet (1913-2009). He came to the US in 1938 to escape the Nazis and became very influential in New York in graphic design and advertising after the war.
