Mark Your Calendars to Join Us for Our Upcoming Events
A Message From VFDA President Frankie Sheridan
Dear fellow VFDA colleagues and friends,
A
s I write this letter, the leaves are falling and
Lacy and I are getting ready to leave for Chicago
to attend the annual National Funeral Directors
Association Convention. We are especially looking
forward to hosting the VFDA Virginia Night on
Tuesday at the Chop House. I hope those of you who
attended that event had a great time!
We also recently attended the Southwest District
meeting down in Abington. In addition, I was pleased
to attend the Tidewater Seafood meeting along with
my own Central District meetings. I must say “Thank
You,” to everyone, because all the District Associations
have been exceptional hosts.
Our committees are in full swing to keep us growing
in the right direction! We have already had several
of our Continuing Education Caravans and special
thanks go to Ted Castle for helping us out in Bristol.
We are currently working on the Winter Leadership
Conference, planning the agenda. Bob Oman and
I have invited the leaders of the Independent
Association as well as the V.M.A. to meet with us to
try to go together as one group to make our
collective voice even stronger on the hill with the
legislators. Please everyone, come out to support the
2012 Winter Leadership Summit!
The Convention Committee has also met, with Jerry
Andrews and Mike Williams among the group,
and they have the agenda ready and the Rondells
scheduled to play on Tuesday night! They are still
working on a featured speaker. The Convention is
set for The Cavalier Hotel from June 24-26, 2012, so
mark your calendars now.
I’d better wrap this up because Puddin is giving me
Halloween decorating orders! We hope everyone has
a safe and joyous holiday season. We are also getting
ready for the international study trip to the Hard Rock
Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Feb. 4-11.
Please join us!
Thank you all for your continued support of the
Virginia Funeral Directors Association.

The VFDA Office: Ready for a Busy Season
W
hat a busy time of year for our association!
After a very successful convention in Virginia
Beach, we began a new year in July with renewed
energy, plans and convention ideas. Your new Board
of Directors held its annual strategic action planning
meeting and for the first time we also held a new
board member orientation. This gave our new board
members an opportunity to come together to review
bylaws, the structure of the board and to fellowship
together over a delicious dinner hosted by Frankie
Sheridan.
Our year so far has been packed with new and
exciting things for the association. We were able to
support the NFDA PAC Auction with a “Welcome
Home” basket that included items donated from
the Crowne
Plaza Fort
Magruder and
the Richmond
Marriott, along
with other
Virginia and
Williamsburg
items. We were
also happy we
could support
the Blue Ridge/
Shenandoah
district golf
outing by
donating a silent
auction item of
a Virginia Tech
lunch bag, VFDA polo shirts, an Omni Richmond
Hotel night stay with breakfast for two and a gift
certificate for a free registration to the 2012 Winter
Leadership Summit.
We have many upcoming events and you should
be receiving lots of emails and mailing from the
association office to tell you all about them!
Winter Leadership Summit
The VFDA education committee and staff are putting
the finishing touches on the Winter Leadership
Summit for 2012. Sessions during the summit will
include “Risk Management for the Funeral Director,”
“Legislative Pros and Cons,” “A Review of the
Legislative Session,” “VFDA’s Legislative Agenda,”
“How to Lobby Your Legislator,” “Leadership
4
Virginia Funeral Directors Association
Session,” and “A Townhall Meeting with Dr. Leah
Bush, Lisa Hahn and Janet Rainey.”
Traveling Caravans
Traveling Caravan Sessions are underway and will
include topics including “Distractive Driving,”
“OSHA,” “Embalming and Restorative Art,” “Preneed
Rules & Regulations Recap,” “Marketing and Selling
to Boomers,” “Group Dynamics and Grief” and
“Virginia State Law and Regulations.” Please check
the VFDA website for schedules and registration
information.
International Study Trip
The VFDA international study trip to Punta Cana
Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in the Dominican
Republic is scheduled for February 4, 2012. To
register for the trip contact R&R Vacations at 804307-1278.
2012 Convention
We hope you received your save the date postcard
for the 2012 convention. The schedule of events
is available on our website and we are currently
working on sponsorship opportunities. We have new
ideas for registration and for our exhibitors. We hope
you will join us at the beach!
Aside from what is listed above, the association
hosted Virginia Night at the Chicago Chop House
in October during the National Funeral Directors
Convention, where members enjoyed fellowship and
a great meal. Thank you to Woody’s Funeral Home
and Sheridan Funeral Home for hosting the bar.
Items to look for in the new year: a promotional
piece introducing new membership benefits offered
to VFDA members, a new and improved association
brochure, a recruitment and retention program, and
a new website.
The VFDA staff, committees and the Board of
Directors wish you all a very happy holiday season.
Take time for yourself and your families. As our
association is built around family, it is important to
remember those we love this holiday season!

VFDA Member/Entrepreneur Storke Discovers a
New Way to Deliver Old-Fashioned Comfort
F
uneral Director David Storke was brainstorming
one day – trying to come up with another way to
supplement his income. Everyone has probably done
that at one time or another, but this time Storke came
up with an idea he thought might be a really good
one. In fact, he figured it was so good that somebody
else must already be doing it.
“So the next thing I did was search the Internet,”
explained VFDA member David Storke of Bowling
Green. He Googled ‘food for
funerals’ and ‘sympathy food
baskets’ and, “All the search found
was food platters and fruit or gift
baskets.” No one had come up with
home-delivered meals! This was in
2006 and marked the beginning of
Sympathyfood.com; which he soon
trademarked to protect his idea. It
wasn’t long until he offered meals
delivered to local homes through
his own website and then others.
The company has been nationwide
for two years now and is currently
relocating from Greensboro, NC,
to Kansas City, MO, in order to
be more centrally located. Its
new facility includes a USDA
commercial kitchen where the meals are prepared,
then immediately flash frozen for freshness, then
stored in freezers until orders are filled and the meals
are placed in coolers for shipping to the surviving
family members as very welcome comfort food. “Say
you have a friend in North Carolina and if you lived
closer you’d send a lasagna, with Sympathyfood, you
can!”
Storke said, “One significant way Sympathyfood.com
differs from most other companies is that we make
phone contact with the people we deliver to before we
even attempt to fill the order. As soon as a customer
places the order, we call the person who will receive
the meal and read the card to them.”
This is vital because many folks travel to stay with
other family members during funerals and are away
from home for a while. This ensures that the person
receiving the meal receives it when they need it most,
and not when their refrigerator
is already overflowing with food.
“Sometimes the person who will
receive the meal requests delivery
in two weeks, when the other
food is gone. Or they ask that it
be delivered to their mom’s house
instead.” said Storke, “We’re happy
to accommodate them.”
Sympathyfood.com offers meals by
price range, so customers decide
how much they want to spend
and then can select the meal they
want to send from about six in that
range.
There are currently hundreds of
affiliates across the country who
put Sympathyfood.com on their website. If you do
this, you receive 10% of every sale that originated
from your site. Simply click on Affiliates Sign-Up
on the left side of the homepage and follow the
directions.
Storke not only runs Sympathyfood.com, he also
owns and operates Storke Funeral Home and is
Mayor of Bowling Green, VA. In addition, he’s a
husband and a father to four sons.
International Study Trip to Punta Cana
Dominican Republic, February 4-11, 2012
The trip includes four-star accommodations at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino, round-trip airfare,
airport transfers and ALL meals! Pricing is available for five nights or seven nights through

VFDA Member Spotlight:
Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va.
T
he Virginia Funeral Directors Association has
a list of members that we select from quarterly
to decide which successful business(es) to profile in
each issue of the Bulletin. This season must have
been a fortunate time for the Currie Funeral Home,
because just as we were starting to work on their
article, we were told they were also appearing in
Funeral Business Advisor, a ‘magazine dedicated
completely to business ideas, strategies and
solutions that serves the entire Funeral Business
industry.’ That article can be read on their website,
www.funeralbusinessadvisor.com.
The Currie Funeral Home website was used as a
reference for both stories.
Currie Funeral Home is located
at 116 East Church Street in
Kilmarnock on Virginia’s beautiful Northern Neck. It was
established there in 1924 as
an undertaker’s business, and
though it changed names several times prior to 1985, it never
moved its location.

and a half decades. Their
website says, “Honoring
Families is Our Vision, Serving the Community is Our
Privilege and a Rich Heritage
is Our Reward.”
That’s not just their slogan,
mission statement and the
way they run their business,
it’s their way of life. They adopted that attitude 87 years
ago, when Albin Chinn Elmore founded the business.
It has genuinely been the way
they’ve treated their customers since Day One. The
business is now owned and operated by Executive
Funeral Directors Gerald Sellers and Thomas Gale.
Like many successful VFDA
member businesses, Currie has
served the families of its community for more than eight
They offer Pre-Planning, both on-line and in-person,
as well as immediate arrangements made either
way. Their website also has grief resources for the
bereaved, listing various organizations and support
groups where their families may find solace after a
loved one’s passing.
Currie Funeral Home also offers cremation services
and a Living Memorial Program through Batesville,
which plants a tree seedling in selected woodlands
at no cost to the customer. Their warm, welcoming
location offers visitation rooms as well as a chapel for
larger gatherings.

NFDA Convention in Chicago Features VFDA Virginia Night
T
he 2011 NFDA International Convention & Expo
was held last October in Chicago, IL. On October
25, the VFDA hosted Virginia Night at the Chicago
Chop House – an event to encourage all the Virginians attending to gather together at the Convention.
Thanks to Bud Hazelgrove of Woody’s Funeral Home
and Frankie Sheridan of Sheridan Funeral Home for
sponsoring the bar during Virginia Night.
Executive Director Lacy Whittaker toured the exhibit floor with VFDA President (and Cavaliers fan)
Frankie Sheridan. Here are some of the photos she
snapped along the way.

Frankie was wooed by salespeople up and down

VFDA Member Showcase
Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.
t
he Green family of Appalachia, Va., are truly
dedicated to funeral service. The VFDA has many
members who have had generations in the business,
and the Greens certainly epitomize that dedication,
with six licensed funeral directors currently in the
family plus one more set to graduate next fall. It is a
fifth generation family funeral business!
The first family member to decide to take up funeral
service for his career was Roy A. Green, who began as
an undertaker in 1931 working out of the town’s General Store, which was owned by his father and a partner. “They came to work one morning, and someone
had left a body outside the Store,” explained Samuel
Lee Green, Roy’s son, and the current oldest generation running the business. “So the other owner of the Roy A. Green pictured in front of his Funeral Home when it was

Don Yaeger: What Makes the Great Ones Great
Y
ou may remember that in the summer Bulletin we listed Keynote Speaker Don Yaeger’s first four Characteristics of Greatness, in case you missed his speech at the convention. We promised to list the remainder
in the fall issue, so here are all 16:
16 Consistent Characteristics of Greatness!
How They Think.
1. It’s personal. They hate to lose more than they love to win.
2. Rubbing elbows. They understand the value of association.
3. Believe. They have faith in a higher power.
4. Contagious enthusiasm. They are positive thinkers...They are enthusiastic...and enthusiasm rubs
off.
How They Prepare.
5. Hope for the best, but...They prepare for all possibilities before they step on the field.
6. What off-season? They are always working toward the next game. The goal is what’s ahead and there’s
always something ahead.
7. Visualize victory. They see victory before the game begins.
8. Inner fire. They use adversity as fuel.
How They Work.
9. Ice in their veins. They are risk-takers and don’t fear making a mistake.
10. When all else fails...They know how – and when – to adjust their game plan.
11. Ultimate Teammate. They will assume whatever role is necessary for the team to win.
12. Not just about the Benjamins. They don’t play just for the money.
How They Live.
13. Do unto others. They know character is defined by how they treat those who cannot help them.
14. When no one is watching...They are comfortable in the mirror. They live their lives with integrity.
15. When everyone is watching – They embrace the idea of being a role model.
16. Records are made to be broken. They know their legacy isn’t what they did on the field. They are
well-rounded.
Visit www.DonYaeger.com for more information.
(continued from page 18)
Things did change from one generation to the next,
but according to Green, what hasn’t changed is that
“We always try to treat people with love and respect
and try to do our best in all that we do,” he said, “We
look to God for guidance in everything.”
Roy A. Green Funeral Home offers traditional services, direct cremations, immediate burial, pre-need
planning, receiving of remains from another funeral
home and forwarding of remains.
