or the second year in a row, McAfee’s Most
Sensational Celebrity Survey has found Kollywood’s Dhanush topping the charts in
cyberspace.
As part of the program, McAfee researched Tamil
popular culture’s most famous people to reveal the
riskiest Kollywood celebrity across the web and
unveil the 2014 rendition of its ‘Most Sensational
Celebrity’ research. Dhanush trumps Trisha
Krishnan, who topped the list in 2013.
As cybercriminals exploit consumers’ need to
be updated on celebrity news, McAfee’s survey
highlights the pitfalls of the trend.
These criminals capitalize on the public’s
fascination to lure them to sites loaded with
malware, which in turn allows them to steal
passwords and personal information. This year,
searching for a ‘celebrity name’ coupled with search
terms like ‘wallpaper’, ‘videos’, ‘free download’, ‘hot
pictures’, ‘selfie’ and ‘internet memes’ have resulted
in instances of malware-laden sites.
Commenting on the findings of the study, Venkat
Krishnapur, Vice-President of EngineeringConsumer, Business Group, McAfee India
Centre, McAfee, Part of Intel Security said, “By
including the names of popular celebrities in a
website’s search tags, consumers are completely
unaware of the security risks that exist which can
severely infect their computers, devices and steal
personal data.
Cybercriminals are consistently looking for ways
to take advantage of consumer interest around new
movies, TV shows, as well as the latest celebritydriven trends. For e.g. the selfie craze, the ice bucket
challenge videos or internet memes created for
sheer fun.”

potentially risky targets online
Nayanthara (No. 3), Trisha Krishnan (No. 4)
&Shriya Saran (No. 6) are the only women to rank
in the top 10 Most Sensational Celebrity list.

by millions of people, making them a target for hackers looking to wreak havoc.
Through his research, Hall
discovered that two of Yahoo’s
servers had been breached by
hackers, and that more could
have already been accessed.

has 52 malware-ridden websites to his name.
6.Touted to be amongst the sexiest heroines in Kollywood,
Shriya Saran stands at 6th position along with Vijay, whose
movie teaser(‘Kaththi’) crossed 1 million views in less than
three days; they both have 51 infected sites to their names.
7. The heartthrob of Kollywood, Silambarasan aka
Simbu, who has been in the news for his CCTV viral video
allegedly showing him kissing a Kannada actress, ranks 7th
with 49 malicious search results.
8. With 47 malware affected sites, ranking 8th is Sivakarthikeyan, the VJ turned actor who is on a roll with back

9. South India’s versatile and veteran superstar Kamal
Hassan, whose photo for paying a visit to Vanamamalai
Mutt went viral on social media after speculations of him
being an atheist, ranks 9thwith 44 infected sites to his name.

Shellshock bug
shocks Yahoo
servers
Security researcher Jonathan Hall says he has found
evidence that Romanian
hackers used the Shellshock
bug to gain access to Yahoo
servers, according to a post
on his website Future South.
The Shellshock bug can be
used by hackers to control
servers using a vulnerability
in Linux and Unix. The problem has existed for over 20
years, but it was only discovered in September. If a hacker
gains access to a server using
the Shellshock bug, they could
see everything that is stored
there.
Hall, a technology consultant and Unix expert, outlined
in his post the process he used
to track down the hacked Yahoo servers. Hall used Google
search to find servers that
had been left vulnerable to
Shellshock. He discovered
that the WinZip.com domain
was being used by hackers
to track down other servers
that could be vulnerable to
the bug.
Hall went on to find that

Samsung Galaxy Alpha storms USA
It may not warrant the same kind of
hoopla afforded a certain new Apple device
released last week, but AT&T has quietly
started offering Samsung’s latest Galaxy
smartphone as a US exclusive on its website.
New directions
Available in black, white or gold, Galaxy
Alpha is notable for being a departure from
Samsung’s typical flagship handsets such
as the Galaxy S5, which have been widely
criticized for its use of a plastic casing.
The 4.7-inch display on the Galaxy Alpha
is instead housed in a metal band that bears
more than a passing resemblance to last
year’s iPhone 5S, thanks to the squared-off
edges which offer a more premium look.
Despite the fresh design, Samsung has
curiously taken a step backward when it
comes to the display, which packs a mere
1080 x 720 pixels into its Super AMOLED
panel, a step down from the full 1080p on
the Galaxy S5.
Internally, the Galaxy Alpha isn’t exactly a
slouch, powered by a quad-core Qualcomm
Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at
2.5GHz with 2GB RAM running the latest
Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.
A quick spot check of local in-store
availability shows plenty of inventory at
AT&T retail stores across the nation, and
we’re guessing the lines will be a whole lot
shorter than those to nab a new iPhone 6
or iPhone 6 Plus, too.
As good as last year’s Moto X was,
Motorola wasn’t able to convince everyone
that a 4.7-inch 720p display was adequate
for their needs, so it upgraded its 2014
model to a larger screen with higher
resolution. Samsung’s going the opposite
way with the Alpha, shrinking most of
the guts of the Galaxy S5 into the smaller
footprint of a 4.7-inch body. Not everything
from the S5 spec sheet makes this transition
successfully, as the microSD card slot and
infrared remote are lost, the camera is
downgraded to a 12-megapixel sensor, and
the battery is cut down to 1,860mAh. Still,
the new Galaxy phone has a quad-core
Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM,
and 32GB of storage, which is enough to
compete with other flagship phones. What
Samsung’s hoping will make the deciding
difference is that hot new design.
The Alpha’s packed full of wireless radios,
as is Samsung’s wont, including NFC, GPS,
Bluetooth, and multiple LTE bands.
The Galaxy Alpha is an unusual device
for Samsung that augurs well for the future.
It combines most of the good things about
the Galaxy S5 with the metallic allure of
recent competitors from HTC and Apple.
It’s beautiful. Now Samsung needs to make
sure that it’s practical too.

Microsoft Corp announced its ‘Windows 10’
operating system on Tuesday to replace the largely
unpopular Windows 8, skipping a number to mark
a leap toward unifying the way people work on
tablets, phones and traditional computers.
The next version of Microsoft’s flagship product, which still runs the vast majority of personal
computers and is used by 1.5 billion customers
worldwide, is aimed at recapturing the lucrative
business market, which generally ignored the newlook Windows 8.
Windows 10 will be “our greatest enterprise
platform ever,” said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s
head of operating systems, at an event in San Francisco. Only 20 percent of organizations migrated
to Windows 8, which was released two years ago,
according to tech research firm Forrester. Many PC
users disliked the touch-optimized interface and
bemoaned the loss of the traditional start-button
pop-up menu. He said Windows 10, long known by
the project name ‘Threshold’ internally, represented
a new type of system for the company, as it seeks to
unify computing as mobile devices proliferate. The
name represented that leap, he said.
“Windows 10 adapts to the devices customers are
using, from Xbox to PCs and phones to tablets and
tiny gadgets,” said Myerson.
Microsoft faces an uphill struggle in reigniting
excitement about Windows. With the rise of Apple
Inc’s iPhone and iPad, and Google Inc’s Android
devices, Windows no longer plays a central role in
many people’s on-screen lives.
From a virtual monopoly on personal computing 10
years ago, Windows now runs only about 14 percent
of devices, according to research firm Gartner.
Reaction to the news was cautious. Microsoft shares
fell 8 cents to $46.36 on Nasdaq. “It’s a bold statement
for Microsoft to make,” said Daniel Ives, an analyst at
FBR Capital Markets. “So far there’s not as much meat
on the bone as we would have wanted, although it’s
still very early days.”
An early version of the software, demonstrated on
stage by Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore, showed two
modes, one optimized for touch-controlled tablets,
and one for PCs using a mouse and keyboard. Users
can switch between the two depending on the device.
Myerson did not say exactly how or when the new
Windows would be rolled out, but other executives
said Microsoft was aiming for a full release in spring
2015. A technical preview can be downloaded from
Microsoft’s website, starting on Wednesday, for users
to try out and give the company feedback.
“They were trying to start the messaging for a product that won’t actually ship until sometime around
the middle of next year,” said Gartner analyst Steve
Kleynhans at the event. “This was to tell the PC installed base that there is a future and it doesn’t have
to be covered over in brightly colored tiles, or force
them to abandon everything they’ve learned over
the past 15 years.”
Myerson said his team toyed with calling the new
product Windows One to emphasize the unity of all
the companies’ products, but noted that name had
already been used.

love to cook. It’s not always easy, and

Even so, I’ve never used a slow cooker,
and have always been a little jealous of
my friends who have one. Put ingredients in and deliciousness comes out. It
seems so easy!
Since I hadn’t yet run out to my
nearest Target to add a slow cooker
to my kitchen collection, I jumped at
the chance to try the Belkin Crock-Pot
Smart Slow Cooker with WeMo. The
name is a bit of a mouthful, but the
idea of a slow cooker I could monitor
remotely seemed like a definite plus -using it to check on the things I cook
and making adjustments as needed.
And in this case, I could do it from my
phone, even while riding on the train or
walking to my apartment. Convenient!
The ability to check to see if your
food is still cooking might appeal to
obsessive-compulsive types, but for
most, the added WiFi won’t be worth
the $130 price tag.

Your car loses fuel every time you accelerate or brake. It guzzles up even more
when you accelerate rapidly or brake suddenly. This is because the more you push
the throttle, the higher the engine RPM or
in simple terms, the more stress the motor
takes.
To get the most out of every litre of fuel
accelerate gently, get to the highest gear
as quickly as possible and then maintain
a steady speed. Avoid jackrabbit or rapid
starts while waiting at a red light and, of
course, turn off the ignition if you’re stopping for over 20 seconds. Some studies say
that keeping a light foot on the throttle can
lower fuel consumption by as much as 30
percent!
Similarly, there’s no need to race to a red
light and slam brakes at the last moment.
Unless, you get kicks from watching the
fuel gauge needle drop rapidly to empty,
which we doubt anyone does. But how does
braking hard burn more fuel? Let’s say you
accelerated to drive 500 metres but applied
the brakes suddenly at 200 metres. In this
case, while you burnt enough fuel to travel
500 metres, you stopped the car at just 200
metres.
Frequent changing of gears and pressing
of the clutch is another fuel sapper. Avoid
keeping your foot on the clutch while waiting at red lights. Also, as aforesaid, get to the
top gear as quickly as possible and shift to a
lower gear only when required. Fortunately,
most modern cars come with a gearshift
indicator on the display, which tells drivers
when to change gears, thus maximising fuel
efficiency.

The Fujifilm HQ-Pro from Fujifilm is a standard 2.5-inch SSD, built with a controller and
19nm 2-bit MLC Flash memory from Toshiba.
A brand associated by just about everyone
with cameras rather than storage. Not that this
is a particularly surprising move - other companies such as Panasonic have recently jumped
into the market too, yet they’re not a company
with a rich history of storage products either.
Actually, Fujifilm already sells a wide range
of SD cards, which perfectly complements its
camera business.

shooting RAW means you have to
process those files in the Sigma Slow
Photo Pro software as the files from

with any other software. This means,
no using lightroom for your Sigma
DP2 files.

128GB, 256GB and 512GB. We were sent a
128GB and 256GB version, but thankfully, not
the 60GB variant, since this capacity is so small
it’s now barely worth using when larger drives
are more affordable than they were.
