OVER THE EDITOR'S DESK
Fall is here - the beginning of another school year for many households, and the
beginning of meetings for many organizations which have recessed for the summer. We
know genealogists have been active because we have received notices of your family
reunions, seminars and research opportunities. Three societies report seminars:
The Florida State Genealogical Society will hold its Thirteenth Annual Conference
on November 3-4 in Gainesville. Contact Mrs. Mary Murphy, 3206 NW 52nd Place,
Gainesville, FL 32605 for details. Her phone number is 904-378-8092.
Two Michigan groups, Huron Valley and Lyons Township Genealogical Societies, will
combine forces to host the Michigan Genealogical Council's seminar, one with the
intriguing theme of "Goin' Courtn" - 200 Years of the Judicial System." The dates
are September 28-30, and the place is the Novi Hilton, Novi, MI. Lois Spiter,

Three family organizations have written to us:
The GANN family gathered in June and formed a society. All Gann descendants may
become charter members by joining before 1990. Joy Gann Brown, Rt. #4, Box 1078,
Hillsborough, NC 27278 is the chairperson.
The GOWEN Research Foundation, a non-profit heritage society, was recently organized with Arlee Gowen, 5078 Gary Ave., Lubbock, TX 79413, as its president. She
invites correspondence and contributions of Gowen research. Any spelling of the
name - Gawan, Goin, Govan, Goyne, Gouwen etc. - is acceptable and welcome.
The LOUDIN-THOMAS family gathers every year on the last Sunday in July at Indian
Mountain State Park in Jellico, Tennessee. Information about these families may
be obtained from Shelby Alexander, 7673 Shields Rd., Lewisburg, OH 45338.
Phone: 513-962-4909.
Another society is planning a publication:
The Historical Society of Maries County, Missouri has chosen a two volume format
for its county's history. Volume 1 is a pictorial record, and Volume 2 is devoted
to county and family history. Write the Society at P.O. Box 289, Vienna, MO 65582.
Verna Baker Banes, P.O. Box 7435, Huntsville, TX 77342-7435 has written us that she
has three WILSON death certificates from Tullahoma, Coffee Co., Tennessee which do
not seem to fit into her Wilson line. Names of the deceased are: Marion Wilson
(b185l IN, d 1925), Mrs. Nancy Wilson (d 1912, age 52), and Nancy Wilson (d 1912 age
61). Mrs. Banes will send copies to anyone able to identify the family of these
persons.
The Clayton Library, Center for Genealogical Research opened to the public last fall
in Houston, Texas. It is known as one of the finest and largest of all genealogical
libraries, and judging from the plat of the facilities, it seems to have catered to
every need of the researcher. Current hours are:
Monday - Wednesday, 9am to 9pm; Thursday - Saturday, 9am to 5pm.

FAMILY GATHERINGS
Prepared for publication by Mary Louise Graham Nazar
UNUSUAL WEDDING STORY OF PASCHALL-WILSON 1864 -
Contributed by Betsy Foster West,
825 S. Perkins, Memphis, TN 38117
Dr. Newton Julian PASCHALL was born 21 May 1840 Weakley Co TN and died 12 Oct 1900
in South Fulton, TN. He married Sarah Jane WILSON, who was born 7 Feb 1844 Ballard
Co KY (now Carlisle Co) and died 18 Jan 1921 S. Fulton, KY. She was the daughter of
James Rutledge Wilson and Elizabeth Johnson HOLMAN (who lived near Milburn, KY).
Newton and Sarah were married 17 Jul 1864 during the Civil War under very unusual
circumstances. There are two versions of these circumstances: one written by Sarah
and one appearing in the 1898 Fulton Daily Leader on three consecutive days penned
by Newton.
Sarah's story: "The author of this article was sixteen years old when the war of
the rebellion began. Although of immature age, I was very decided in my preference
of the political situation. So with South Carolina blood tingling in my veins, I
donned the secession badge, which was a rosette made of red, white, and blue ribbon
cut half in two. \Vhile the Union Party wore the unsevered rosette and at that time
were greatly in the majority in the community where I lived. But, nothing daunted,
I wore mine pinned on the left breast as the pride of my heart ... In the spring of
sixty-four the Southern troops were moved from Kentucky. But frequently parties
were sent back for recruits, such as men and horses, and in July Capt. N.J. Paschall
was detailed by Col. Ed. Crossland of Forrest's cavalry as recruiting officer into
Kentucky. As we had previously arranged to get married, we decided to take advantage of this perhaps last opportunity. So we managed to get a legal license and get
a preacher brave enough to say the ceremony, but this was not done without some difficulty. Then the next thing was to get out of there (that is to get out of the
Federal lines) for to our chagrin the news had reached Paducah that Paschall was in
the country and also that he had married a girl near Paducah. And they immediately
sent out a company of a hundred men to make search for the soldiers and also the
bride. How the soldiers were to get out was not much of a problem as their tactics
were to out run any crowd they could not whip. But alas for me, how was I to escape? But the alert Capt. was equal to the emergency. And while he had his men
vigilantly guard the movements of the enemy and cautioned to be sure to keep in the
rear, he managed to secure the services of a little old gray-headed man who had a
little old mule and an old delapidated buggy to convey me through this country to
where we would De under the protection of the southern army. The arrangement being
completed, the Capt. proceeded to get his men together with a number of new recruits.
They made their escape in the night and got back to Col. Crossland with a very satisfactory report."
"But my escape was to come yet. I did not know and did not much believe that they
had had orders to molest me, but such were their threats and an excuse they made for
searching houses as though they expected to find me under the beds or in closets,
pantries, and trunks and other such places. But all I did was to keep advised where
they were and keep out of their route. And this was not hard to do as they were not
fond of prowling around when they thought there were southern soldiers in the woods.
I waited a few days until the excitement lulled, and according to promise the little
old man with the little old mule put in his appearance. He found me waiting dressed
in very unassuming costume and wearing a sun bonnet. And about four o'clock in the
morning we started on our trip. By the time people were stirring much through the
country we were far enough away from home and acquaintance not to be recognized. As
we plodded along through the heat and dust we had to stop several times to get water

and let our mules rest a little. And a little to our surprise as well as displeasure, people eager for the news about what was going on would ask how far we had come
and if we had seen any soldiers. As we couldn't tell them anything, they would tell
us what they knew. We were told two or three times that 'Paschall is in here with a
company of soldiers and they say he got married the other day, married a girl who
lived down near Paducah.' The little old man never knew anything about it, and was
ready to drive on. A little after sundown we reached our appointed destination.
Next morning the old gentleman (for such he was) set out to return by a different
route. I felt secure of being sent to prison or being exiled. What do you think of
such a bridal trip?"
Newton's story: " ... That Western Kentucky and West Tennessee were disputed territory, first one and then the other occupying the grounds, and frequently both at the
same time; and every now and [then] a collision of the blue and the gray would occur,
and those who could not hold their ground would have to do the best running. At the
time this narrative crystallized there were 'Yanks' at every crossroad, and the
scouting 'Rebs' had to be ever wakeful and constantly on the lookout. There was a
certain young Rebel soldier who had a sweetheart back in Kentucky, and it became
noised about that they were married every time the young 'Reb' crossed the Yankee
lines. The report became so notorious that it was very unpleasant to the young lady
and annoying to the soldier. They, therefore, concluded they would get married, if
they could, and stop the unpleasant talking."
"To procure marriage license and assemble a Rebel wedding party within the Yankee
lines, with Yankee sympathizers filling every office at the county seats, required
no little nerve, and was attended with many dangers. The young Rebel Captain detailed twelve of his best men, all brave and well mounted, to accompany him through
the enemy's lines and procure the necessary credentials, as well as the girl. The
first county seat they attempted to enter to procure the necessary marriage license
was found heavily guarded by Yankee soldiers, and strongly fortified. Another was
sought, more distant from Yankee headquarters, and finally entered by circuitous
routes; and by taking and holding one prisoner, captured on the way, least he might
be induced to tell who he had seen, and where .•. In approaching the town or city
limits the squad was halted; two men assigned picket duty on each road that entered
the town; with instructions to advance at least one half mile and there remain until
a signal of a pistol shot by the captain would call them in. Another detail was to
take charge of all persons on the streets, hold them Status quo until authoritatively
released. A third detail was made to accompany the captain through his ordeal with
the officers of the law. When all except the last detail had gotten in position to
comply with orders, the young captain dismounted and marched into the court house
followed by his escort."
"Not having had the exquisite pleasure of meeting the Honorable County Court Clerk,
a federal appointee, over a county whose people sympathized with the South and its
soldiery, as much as South Carolina ever did, and had furnished as many Southern soldiers in proportion to population. It made it necessary to look out for the man who
suited the description of the distinguished gentleman sought ... Whereupon, after a
very brief, 'Howdy do!' the Captain stated his business. Says he: ;1 want a marriage
license from this office for one Mr.
to marry one Miss
,at your very earliest
convenience.' The somewhat indignant~oking clerk replied~What did you say?' The
Captain repeated what he had said before in a more emphatic manner. The dignified
clerk this time replied, 'I don't understand you.' The Captain considered precious
time unnecessarily consumes (sic) and drew from the scabbard of his belt one of his

ever faithful army guns, pointed it in the direction that Mr. Clerk was sitting, and
said: 'I guess you had better understand me at once?' 'All right! certainly,' says
the affable clerk. 'What are the names please?' ... 'I would take you to be of lawful
age to get married, but how old is the young lady?' ... This stumped the Captain because he doubted she was as old as the required twenty-one so he turned to his escort
who said, 'I don't know, but she is older than me', whereupon the clerk said 'that's
alright, I guess she is about thirty ... ' The captain thought that for fear some
might think that he had impressed his license he had better pay for them in the standard money of the country and gave the clerk the fee in Greenbacks, which set a
quietus upon him for all time, so far as I know. That object having been accomplished, the next thing to do was to get out and get away from there ... a single shot fired
into the air from the Captain's pistol brought all the pickets in, in a long gallop
and as the whole party darted out of town, they left the citizens pinching themselves and saying who am 17"
"The boys with us were all former citizens of that country and knew the ropes. We
made a forced march that night, each man taking care of himself, either going to his
home or seeking the protection of some of his friends in the vicinity. We had [an]
understanding as to when and where we would come together again ... Matters having gone
thus far the young lady had made up her mind to get married and seek refuge further
South, and the whole Yankee army, in her judgement, could not prevent it. That's
woman. Thus continued the conditions and surroundings until the evening before the
marriage was to take place the next morning, which was Sunday. Late Saturday afternoon the Rebel squad re-assembled ... After lunch, and after all civilians should have
been at home and at rest, the captain and his ever faithful comrade Bob, mounted their
horses and setout to see if the way was clear and if the young lady was in readiness
for the next day's flight and its consequences. They arrived at her boarding house,
found the coast clear, whereupon the captain dismounted ... He found the young lady
somewhat excited from the rumors of the day ... After arranging with her all preliminaries for definite action the coming day, the captain stole his first kiss from his
intended bride and hurriedly sought the midnight darkness and the rendevous of his
command."
"The Captain's wardrobe consisted of a nice suit of military gray cloth, trimmed in
polished brass buttons and gold braid that had been smuggled through the Yankee lines
to him by the old friend whom he had held as a prisoner a few days before. His hat
was a broadtrimmed, low-crowned black felt; such as a Southern planter feels proud
of. It was decorated on one side with a silver star and plume of Ostrich feathers.
His boots were of the old cavalry style, worn outside of the pants, coming up to and
enclosing the knees; the heels being decorated by a large pair of spurs. His arms
consisted ot two army six-shooters, of large size, carried in a belt worn, usually,
outside of his coat, and when mounted, a carbine swung to his saddle. After the
Captain had donned a clean shirt (a white one at that) the boys fell into line and
proceeded to the house where they expected to find the young lady ready to elope. It
was no surprise to find a horse saddled, the girl dressed in a nice gown, which rustled like silk; and which proved sure enough silk. In a short time she was mounted
upon a horse, a good one, and as one of the boys had tendered the captain his horse
for that day, it being the best in the expedition, it is reasonable to suppose that
she and the captain led the way ... had we met on that flight a body of the enemy outnumbering us four to one, the courage and determination we possessed would have made
us charge through smoke, fire, missles of death and steel, although fatal wounds
might have torn through our mortal bodies, but thanks to a kind Providence we did not
encounter any until we had proceeded several miles and arrived at the place where we

were to meet the brave young minister who had been engaged to say the ceremony that
was to unite the young couple for life, although it might be brief. In this instance all dismounted, no one was detailed to hold horses, as was usual, but went
straight into the house - not a prepared room or bridal chamber, but stood up in the
floor just as they dismounted except each soldier reverently held his hat in hand
while a brief and appropriate ceremony was performed, pronouncing them man and wife
..• permit me to state that all the survivors of that expeditiop so far as I have
known, have been good citizens, loyal to the government they were then fighting and
have reared respectable families ... "

INDEX TO PROBATE RECORDS IN MEMPHIS/SHELBY COUNTY, TENNESSEE ARCHIVES
In the 169 years of its existence, the Shelby County Court system has produced
literally tons of papers which document the lives of its citizens. Those papers were
boxed and stored in any available space, frequently shoved to the back as newer boxes
of papers arrived. Fortunately, many of those boxes have survived the damage of time,
soot and humidity and are now housed in the Memphis/Shelby County Archives, under the
supervision of Dr. James R. Johnson, Head of the History Department, Memphis/Shelby
County Public Library and Information Center.
Of special interest to genealogists are the loose papers from the Probate Court
concerning the estates of deceased persons. For the past eight years volunteers from
the Tennessee Genealogical Society have been separating probate records from county
business and other court records. Papers were unfolded, cleaned, repaired, sealed in
mylar if fragile, and organized for placement in acid-free folders. The folders are
filed by year, estate number and name of the deceased. Some estates contain one
piece of paper; some contain hundreds of pieces. The name of the deceased person may
appear in several years; if there were minors involved, there was action on the estate for a number of years. Some original wills were found, even though wills are
usually housed separately in the Shelby County Courthouse.
The TGS team, led by Mary Louise Graham Nazor, consisted of Elizabeth Riggins
Nichols, Stewart Caya Phillips, Louise Tittsworth Tyus, Martha Everett Weatherford,
Jessie Taylor Webb and Betsy Foster West. Mrs. Nazor entered the data for the years
1820-1860 into the computer, using a program designed by Dr. Barbara Flanary, Archivist and Preservationist. Information from the computer print out comprises this index. Copies of individual files may be obtained by the following procedure:
1. Send the Archives a request for information on the number of papers in the
estate file of your interest, including the name of the deceased, the year
and the estate number, and a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope [SASE] for your
reply. You will receive an answer giving the number of pages in the file
along with the cost of copying.
2. Send a check Dr money order in the designated amount to Memphis/Shelby
County, TN Archives, 30 South Front Street, Memphis, TN 38103.
Charges for Mail Order Photocopy Service:
$
.20 per copy
$ 4.00 minimum handling charge 1-5 copies
$ 15.00 per hour additional charge for more than 5 copies
The index to Probate Records in Memphis/Shelby County, Tennessee Archives includes names of Deceased, Administrators, Executors, Guardians, relatives, persons of
the same surname, witnesses to wills and persons or places of special interest. Some
estates contain many more names, such as lists of persons who purchased at a sale.
These are not included in the index. The ID (Identification) column indicates the
relationship of that person to the deceased. Besides the normal abbreviations, two
additional ones were used: frmly = formerly and decd = alternate spelling of deceased
surname.

8Jxll. 231 pp, indexed. Order from the compiler, 200 Sherry Lane, Farmersville, TX 75031.
$18.00 (TX residents add $1.26 sales tax)
Carter County Oklahoma was established in 1907 (the year Oklahoma became a state), from the
Chickasaw Lands, with Ardmore as the County seat. The Rose Hill Cemetery is the largest and
oldest cemetery in Ardmore. It is especially important to the researcher as some of the very
earliest settlers were buried here in the late l880s. Another attraction of this cemetery is
that a large number of veterans from all the wars, from the Spanish American to the Vietnam war,
are buried here. The Confederate Home for Veterans is in Ardmore, and the Veterans Administration chose this cemetery for burial of the soldiers who died there. Though many of the soldiers are from Oklahoma, some are from other states - Ark, Tenn, Miss, Kans, Mo, & Ohio. The
records have been copied with the researcher in mind. All pertinent information was copied;
besides dates, some have where born, some have marriage dates and names of their children. Also included in this volume is a map of the cemetery with the sections numbered and the various
sections are copied and numbered accordingly, which is very beneficial.
GILES COUNTY, TN. 1840 FEDERAL CENSUS compiled by M. Janell McCann.
40 pp, indexed.
No date. Soft back, 8Jxll.
Order from author, 313 N. Chandler, Fort Worth, TX 76111. $15.00
Although the 1840 census did not assign a family number, Ms. McCann has kept the original order
of the census, enabling researchers to know who is living a few houses up and down the road
from their ancestor(s). Blue paper gives the index a distinct advantage. Pensioners of the
Revolutionary War or other military service are included in the household count, yet separated
by name and age. Also included in this annotated manuscript are the number within the household who are blind, insane, idiots, slave, or free colored persons. In the introduction the
author reminds us of the changes within the county that time has wrought; changes of county
lines, and changes of names of landmarks.

Order from the author, 721 NW 73 Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33317. $38.00

Lancaster Co PA, who came from Germany around 1710. He sent his sons to the Shenandoah Valley
of Virginia to manage his vast land holdings. Some of them later moved to southwest Virginia.
The book focuses on Christopher Francisco and Halana Bowen who moved to Claiborne Co TN, around
1859. Their children and grandchildren are covered in detail. Christopher Francisco's account
book is of special interest; it names many of his neighbors in southwest Virginia from 1838 to
1858. "Time and Tide" has 105 photographs, is fully indexed and includes complete documentation. A limited number is being printed.

The chapter title clearly states the contents of this manuscript, a pioneer into genetic diseases written by a layperson for the layman. Titles are (1) "The Genetics Revolution and You";
(2) "What are Genetic Diseases?"; (3) "Is Your Family at Risk?"; (4) "Your Mental and Behavioral Roots"; (5) "Adoption and Your Genetic Roots"; (6) "Tips for Researching Your Medical
Pedigree"; (7) "Using Personal Computers for Your Genetic Data"; (8) "Your Family Health Tree:
A Legacy for Your Descendants"; (9) "Genetic Counseling: Should You Consider It?'.'; (10) "Genetic Research in Progress." This book explains how standard genealogical practices may be used
in compiling a family health history; however, it is not intended to replace the services of a
family physician.

About that time, James Monroe Neighbors changed the spelling of his name to Nabers or Nabors.
This book traces the family of James Monroe Nabers who had two marriages, fourteen children and
four Grissom step-children. His descendants eventually moved into various counties of Mississippi, and on into other states. The author's sources are census, church, cemetery, court
house and family Bible records, also personal knowledge of family members.
THE FIRST PUTNAM COUNTY TENNESSEE U.S. CENSUS, 1860 compiled and published by Joyce Bradley McComb. 1989. Soft back, 8fxll.
Lexington, SC 29072. $12.00

Order from the compiler, 1730 Jessamine Road,
Putnam County Tennessee was created in 1854 from White, Jackson, Overton and DeKalb Counties.
The first census consists of 1353 families, most of whom were farmers. In addition to the
usual census information, this transcription uses a code to include a person's position in the
family (head of house, spouse, children in order of age), school attendance, literacy, multiple birth, handicaps, married or widowed within the year, occupations etc. The alphabetical
surname index is by family number on the census, not by the page number. The book is computer
produced and printed on acid-free paper.

More than 7,000 of the nearly 150,000 Scots who emigrated to America before the Revolutionary
War are listed in this book. A native of Scotland, the author has provided an alphabetical
listing of names and as much information on each person as could be found from British sources
including his own previously published works. A letter code is used to identify 71 primary &
15 secondary sources; at least one code follows each name. One might find date and place of
birth, parents, education, residence, port and date of embarkation & arrival, place of settlement, names of spouse(s) and children, and date and place of death, plus other statistics. A
Ships Index and a Spouses Index are included. The fact that the entries have been fully documented makes this work as near to being complete as British sources will allow.

mentioned throughout. A separate section has been devoted to John and Charity (Barton) Owsley,
bringing the grandchildren up to the present century.

TENNESSEE STATEHOOD
1796
1996
One event which is important to every facet of Tennessee history is
the celebration of the Bicentenary of Tennessee Statehood. The actual
date is 1996, but plans are already made for three public meetings
sponsored by the Tennessee Historical Society. The purpose of these
meetings is to find out what are the needs in each field of our history
and how they can be met during the bicentennial era. Meeting dates are:
West Tennessee -
7 Oct 1989
Middle Tennessee - 14 Oct 1989
East Tennessee - 28 Oct 1989
Carnegie Center for Art and History
305 East College St., Jackson, Tennessee
First American Center Auditorium
326 Union St., Nashville, Tennessee
Candy Factory, World's Fair Park
1010 Laurel Ave., Knoxville, Tennessee
All meetings will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by mid-afternoon.
The Tennessee Historical Society's executive director, Jim Summerville,
emphasized that the meetings will be free and open to everyone. "We
want all Tennesseans who love the history of their area and state to
come and propose historical projects that they'd like to see carried out
from now through 1996 and beyond."
