SOCIAL CLUB NEWS AND EVENTS:
Regular Meeting: The Social Club
meets regularly at 1pm on the 2nd
Monday of every month at the Clubhouse. You are invited to attend our
next meeting on August 10th, 2009.
We welcome men and women of all
ages. The new officers for 2009/10
are: Co-Chairs Judie Wiechmann and
Betty McKinney; Vice President Jenny
Taylor; Secretary Ann Carr and Treasurer Flori Chovanak.
“Tragical Mystery Tour” mystery dinner. It was cool, man! Our manager,
Ken Hoffer, was the only sleuth who
guessed “who done it!!” Congratulations, Ken. A huge THANK YOU
goes to all those involved from the fantastic, groovy cast, to those who converted the Clubhouse into Hede Leiss’
pad/murder scene, to the psychedelic
dinner chefs, and the clean-up crew.
Annual BBV Yard Sale
will be held on Saturday,

BEACH CLEANUP PARTY!! - The
Social Club will be hosting a Village wide
beach cleanup party on August 19th at 10
am to take advantage of a minus tide.
We will be meeting at the Sand Dollar
Beach picnic area. A special box lunch
exchange will be held following the
beach clean up. If you plan to participate, each person
should bring a decorated box lunch, Such as a nice
sandwich or wrap, fruit, chips, dessert, etc. Numbers
will be drawn to exchange lunch boxes. Drinks will be
provided. Please volunteer to help with this much
needed project. Consider these facts: a tin can that
entered the ocean in 1986 is still decomposing in 2036;
a plastic bottle that entered the ocean in 1986 is still
decomposing in 2436; a glass bottle that entered the
ocean in 1986 is still decomposing in year 1,001,986!!!
Come give us a hand. Garbage bags, water, and handwipes will be provided but be sure to bring gloves and
sturdy shoes. For questions or further information,
please contact Judie Wiechmann at 371-9906.
Bunco: The next Bunco night will be held Friday, August 28th, at 7:30 pm. Call Judie Wiechmann at 3719906 to make your reservation. Bring an appetizer or a
dessert to share. Coffee and tea will be served or
BYOB. The cost is $5.00 a person, and all the money
collected will be given out as prizes.
Welcome Committee: If you are new to the Village
and haven’t been greeted by the Committee, please call
Judy Lackey at 371-3387 or the Office. Donations of
baskets and new items to be used in the Welcome Bas-
kets, such as individually wrapped teas, coffees, potpourri, wrapped candy, candles, small notebooks,
pens/pencils, etc. are always needed and appreciated.
If you are a Village resident and have a free service or
gift certificate that you would like to donate to the
Welcome Baskets, please contact Judy. No business
cards please.
Helping Hands: We have a terrific pool of volunteers who are available to provide temporary assistance
to those in the village who are sick, recovering from
surgery, have lost a loved one or otherwise need help.
Services include providing meals, running errands,
picking up medicine, helping with children, making
emergency repairs, temporary yard work, driving people to a doctor appointment, etc. We have many
pieces of medical equipment available for short term,
temporary use, such as walkers, wheel chairs, an electric scooter, crutches, canes, adult portable potty chair
and more. We also have some baby items, such as
cribs, strollers, care seats, etc. If you know of someone
who needs a “helping hand” please call Sandi Schoenherr at 393-4601 or 305-2354.
BBV T-Shirts: There are still lots of the T-shirts
available that were sold for the Fun Run/Walk this
year. If you are interested in adult or children’s sizes,
please contact Sandra Bogen at 371-7350. T-shirts will
be on sale at the August 1st BBV Yard Sale.
Food Bank: There are still people in
our Birch Bay and Blaine communities
who need assistance. If you are interested in donating non-perishable items
to the Blaine Food Bank, you may leave
your donations in the special box in the

Art Group
BBV Wine Tasting Club
Our wonderful art group meets every
Tuesday from 12:30 to 3:30. We have a
very diverse group of painters and craftsmen who share all of their talents with
each other. It is a perfect learning and
laughing group. We also have good snacks.
Our past year has been very successful with several
classes which drew new members.
Our out going chairmen are DeeDee Ross and Pat
Vavrick. Many thanks to them.
Our New chairmen are Phyllis Tiffen 371-5783, and
Linda Lockie 371-8256. Treasurer Deb Freeman.
We are planning an unusually interesting art exhibit for
Sat. Sept. 19th, details in the next bulletin.
Reporter K. Graves
Summer is a busy time and the 17th of
July was no exception. With the Yacht
Club on a cruise and the golfers getting
ready for the annual fund raiser the attendance for our Zinfandel was a bit
lower than our usual winter wine tastings. I expect our August 29th crab feed
will bring out a few more people.
That’s right! On August 29th at 4 pm we will have our
annual “Crabtacular” where people bring one bottle of
their best wine per person and a salad to share with the
group. The club will supply corn and bread. The cost
will be the usual $10 per person. In the past we have
held the Crabtacular at the Stones place on the beach,
but with all their construction we are having it this year
at the Clubhouse @ 4pm.
For all you crab fisherpersons, we will need lots of crab
so let me know how many you can supply. If you supply 6 or more crab you are exempt from the $10 fee. If
you let me know how many crabs you are bringing I will
keep track and be sure we have enough. (Can anyone
have enough crab?)
If you are interested in attending, please call Jim Macmillan at 371-2933 or email him at [email protected]
or [email protected] by August 24th.

LADIES GOLF
Summer Fun @ BBV: Thursday August 13th, 1-5:30pm. Join us at the
Clubhouse as we play outside lawn
games. If the weather is warm enough,
we'll have water battles on the baseball
field! There will be games and crafts as
well. So bring your favorite ball or
game, and your super-soaker, and come
have fun with us. We strongly encourage parents to
participate or send a treat for sharing.
Hope your month has been good, it certainly has been busy for everyone in golf!
We had the 2 Person Scramble on June
27th and it was well attended with 60 people in competition. There were several
ties but the winners were Steve Brand and
Roxanne Hubert, 2nd place tie to Bill
Quick and Joan Lockwood and Pat Ness
and June Marshall (other winners are at the Clubhouse
if you want to know).
Kids & Pets Parade and Ice Cream Social on Labor Day weekend. Saturday, September 5th. Meet at
the Marina at 12:30. Parade to Clubhouse 12:45. Ice
Cream is $1 a bowl. Its time to close out the season
with another fun annual event for BBV by decorating
your bike or golf cart or yourself and parade to the
clubhouse for delicious ice cream treats! Bring your
noisemakers and join us for the fun.
We have also had the Golf Fund Raiser which was
great fun (you can tell I did well!) and at the end of this
month we have the Ladies Member/Guest Invitational. To be a golfer is to be BUSY. That saying,
there are few of us so busy as our Joan Lockwood and
Pat Wood who are our Co-Chair Social Committee
heads. Oh my, what a great job they do so we can all
have a great time. Their tables are lovely and the food
is served well and deliciously; wonderful salads ladies.
Anyway, they make our celebrations come off seamlessly….a REALLY BIG THANK YOU from all of
us.
Help:
We can always use help with the Kids events, so please
give me a call or email me if you would like to help
out. [email protected] or 922-0492 Heather Rossfeld
BBV Music Night
Music Nights are held at the Clubhouse
on Mondays at 7 pm each month. We
decided to discontinue the first Monday
for the summer, but the second and
fifth are still on, and they are Jammin'
for Fun. The fourth Monday of August is a Budget
Meeting, and Pizza Etc. is held on the third Monday of
the month so there will be no music. See http://
gorts.com/songbook for more information. New
singers, players and listeners are invited to join.
The championships are in August, so we are
(supposedly) getting better at this whole stick and ball
thing and we hope all of you out there who haven’t
joined a team will consider it next year. The Ladies
Club is only $16 to $17 dollars plus your GHIN so not
a huge outlay for great friends and a great time.
Another huge LADIES HUG for all the volunteers
and Steve Brand who keep our
course in such beautiful shape and
keep improving it too. That’s all for
now….see you on the links!!

13th Annual BBV Golf Fund
Raiser: Thank you all who
helped to organize and pull off
another successful Fund Raiser,
especially Jim Macmillan, Event
Coordinator, and to all who secured contributions and/or contributed individual auction/raffle items and services.
But, the biggest thank you goes to everyone who generously reached deep into their pocketbooks and
played in the tournament, sponsored holes, bid on auction items, bought raffle tickets, played in the posttournament games or attended the dinner. We hope to
see more of you at next year’s event. Proceeds from
this year’s event will help support the Junior Golf Program (spearheaded by Chuck Pagani), replace the deteriorating wooden tee-box hole signs, and other opportunities to enhance the BBV Golf Course. (Please
see insert for winners, hole-sponsors and contributors.)
August 23rd golf course tour: Drop by the Golf Shop
and get a free golf cart ride around the golf course,
with a knowledgeable Golf Club member as your
guide, on August 23rd (Sunday) between 3:00 pm to
5:00 pm. Get to know this great BBV asset from a new
vantage point and return another day to play!
Club Championship nears: August 13 – 16. The
Club Championship will determine the Men’s, Ladies’
and Junior club champion titles (Low Gross) and Low
Net Men’s and Ladies’ winners. Entrants play 36 holes,
one 18-hole round on each of two of the four tournament days. GHIN/Course handicaps apply; entrants
without an established handicap will be assigned a “0”

Cart path paving project - At the
current pace and available budget
through cart trail fees, it will take
several more years to complete concreting the cart paths. The Committee is evaluating which sections of
the paths not yet paved are of higher
priority and identifying sections where concrete may
not be the best option. A schedule will be developed to
address high priority sections and, if possible, seek
“fast track” budgeting to complete the cart path paving
project sooner than later.
Establishing a “BBV Golf Club” - The Committee
is exploring the possibility that a new, allencompassing BBV Golf Club (along the lines of the
Yacht Club) might be formed to take on the more
“social and recreational” activities of the BBV golfing
community, like the open houses, Duffers Scrambles,
Fund Raiser, Club Championship and other tournaments, leaving Board-related activities to the Committee. Committee members would be free to participate
at both levels. Discussions within the BBV golfing
community will be initiated to explore the concept.
Next Golf Committee Meeting – August 6th, 2:00
pm, Golf Shop (changed from August 13 to accommodate Board budget planning).

Yacht Club News
On the 4th of July, we watched the
fireworks from our raft-up in Birch
Bay, and were truly astounded at the
sheer amount of fiery materials that
were launched into the sky. There is
no way that the fireworks at Semiahmoo could have held a candle to the display that went
on, and on, and on, from all around Birch Bay. There
is certainly no need to go anywhere else for fourth of
July entertainment.
Having just returned, this afternoon, from the Commodore's Cruise, I can tell you that the 36 people on
15 boats that came on the cruise had a fabulous time.
supervise parking and act as general security for the
event. Then, on the 22nd, we will hold our annual
Fish Fry. Vice Commodore Jeff Morris-Reade is coordinating security for that event, and further details on
the yard sale, and a signup sheet for security people
will be sent out by email.
More details and assistance requests for the Fish Fry
will be forthcoming by email as well.
Safe boating,
Wayne McFee, Commodore
The weather could not have been much better, and I
only say "much better" because of the fog and marine
layer that we had in the mornings at Friday Harbor.
Sucia Island was as enjoyable as ever, and because of
some boats going over on Wednesday and Thursday,
we had sufficient space at the dock in Fossil Bay.
Roche Harbor was particularly delightful, with their 40
foot square party barge, church bells playing music
each morning, and the wonderful retreat ceremony
their color guard performed each evening.

Our Hawaiian theme dinner there was a huge success,
and the games at both Sucia and Roche Harbor were
as hilarious and entertaining as ever. Lots of pictures
will soon be posted on Snapfish.
Wine tasting at San Juan Vineyards was every bit as
enjoyable as it was a few years back, and some of the
group took advantage of airplane rides piloted by Vice
Commodore Jeff Morris-Reade.
At Friday Harbor, the highlight was busing over to
Lime Kiln State Park and arriving at the whale watching area just in time to see Orcas appearing out of the
misty fog, and having two large bulls put on a feeding
display right in front of us and very close to shore.
Very exciting indeed!

Approximately 70 people attended the July
event where we enjoyed a hamburger and
hotdog BBQ. After dinner, we were entertained by a local music group called The
End of the Road Band. They played
mainly Bluegrass music. Many people
were tapping toes and singing along. Thanks to Rich
and Cathy Gort for organizing this entertainment for us.
Our next Pizza, Etc. dinner will be on Monday, August
17th at 5:30pm at the Clubhouse. Please bring a pizza,
salad or dessert to share that evening. Coffee and juice

POOL NEWS
Gorgeous summer weather
has brought lots of BBV
residents and their guests
to the pool to swim.
Even when it rains, we
have 8 “die-hards” who
participate in water aerobics, but up to 23 on sunny days.
Swim team is going well with 15 kids, ages 6-18. The
swim team kids look forward to the games and activities
on “Fun Fridays” as a reward for their work outs during
the week.
So far we’ve had 20 children ages 3-18 take swim lessons
with our last session from July 27th-August 6th.
Remember there is an hour each day for adult swim before the pool opens for public swim in the afternoons.
Family pool passes are still available at the office for $25
for the season, or $5 for a weekly (7 consecutive days)
pass.
The pool is scheduled to close on September 8 (Labor
Day).

From the BBV Manager
A lot of this will
be redundant for
those of you on
the e-mail distribution list, but
not everyone has
e-mail access.
The Paving Project for 2009 is complete without too many problems.
Granite Construction (formerly Wilder Construction)
won the bid rights this year and worked very well with
our Roads Crew. A very special thanks to Chuck
Wolfe and his Crew for overseeing this project and
making sure the Village was represented in all aspects
of this project. Well done Chuck and crew. A big
thanks to all our members who may have been put out
by any of the paving and ingress/egress to your properties during this time. Usually, there wasn’t much of a
wait until asphalt dried enough to drive upon it
(generally 15 minutes to ½ hour). Striping will be completed in a week or so to complete the project.
Two new items will be available to members shortly.
The first is member access to the pedestrian gate at the
Lower Gate. The Board has approved a trial (through
the end of 2009) for bike/jogger/walker access to this
gate. Staff has to replace the existing lock, get duplicate
keys made, and install an automatic closure device and
it will then become available. Users must get a key just
like the Marina users do ($50 refundable deposit per
key). I have a little concern for when school starts this
fall and the traffic problems, so would like to ask that
the pedestrian gate is not accessible during morning
pick-up and afternoon drop-off times. With the bus,
kids, bikes, and parents coming and going, there is already enough activity in the area without creating more
and more safety concerns. Thank you.
The second new item is that the
Office is trying to set up a credit/
debit card system to take member
payments. I do not know how
much use we will get, but there are
those that ask each year why we do
not have the ability. Through our
accounting program, QuickBooks
and the parent company Intuit, we are able to try a sys-
tem out. For those interested in using credit card payments instead of cash or check, it should be available
sometime in August. We will assess the usage and
costs as time goes on to determine if this service will
be retained.
The Bulletin always has a reminder that members can
sign up to be committee members when openings occur. This is especially important now. There are currently two openings on the Lakes Committee. This
committee currently meets the first
Wednesday of the month. The Lakes
Committee oversees the lakes management of both Thunderbird and
Kwann Lakes and the three Golf
Course Ponds. You do not need be a
member who lives on the lakes to
participate, and Village member can
apply. The lakes are an amenity of the Village as a
whole, and input is especially needed from those who
do not live on them. You may have noticed some of
the issues the committee deals with in the bulletin, on
the committee agendas, or at meetings. Permitting for
inclusion of Grass Carp, chemical treatments, blue dye
applications, manual treatments (like the newly built
weed-dozer by Rick Whitaker), water sampling by
Western Washington University’s Institute of Watershed Studies, and others. If you have any interest,
please contact the office.
The ACC Committee has one opening available. The ACC Committee
reviews all Village projects to make
sure that each project is in compliance with your governing documents and makes suggestions to the
Board on how to make the Rules
and Regulations better or more
readable/reasonable. Anyone interested in the vacant
ACC position, please let the office know. Committee
work requires some dedication and time, but is probably the best way to get familiar with the how your Village operates and gives one a sense of accomplishment.
Can’t believe its August already. I hope everybody’s
summer is progressing nicely. Enjoy your community
and your neighbors.
