Santa Claus Is Coming to Town!
You’d better not shout. You’d better not cry.
You’d better not pout—I’m telling you why ...
Santa Claus is coming to The Stratford! That’s
right, old Saint Nick will here on Saturday,
December 12, at 1:30 p.m. He’ll be on hand to
take all your Christmas requests and to pose for
pictures. He’ll only be here for an hour, in the
Court West Lobby, so make sure to get here on
time. Santa will be available for kids of ALL
ages. And everyone who sits on Santa’s lap will
get a special Christmas treat! The Stratford will
provide one complimentary 4x6 photo for each
person, and order forms will be available for
anyone who wants additional copies and sizes.
All photos ordered will be available for pickup
at the CW Front Desk on Monday,
December 21, at 9:00 a.m.
All family and staff are invited to have
pictures taken with Saint Nick.

As every year, we will have a Door Decorating

your apartment door. The winner will receive a special
prize at our Holiday Party. And ... this is one party you
don’t want to miss. Both residents and staff are invited
to the annual Christmas party to be held December 18
at 1:30 p.m. in the Court West Lobby. Great food,
fabulous company and high spirits are to be enjoyed by
all who attend. Throughout the month, there will be
many festive activities planned. We will kick off the
season with our Annual “Winter Wonderland” Formal
on Thursday, December 3, at 4:30 p.m. Friday,
December 4, is our Annual Tree-Trimming Social.
Come to the Court East Lobby and help trim one of our
Christmas trees at 1:30 p.m. Cider and cookies will be
served to all of our helpers! Wednesday, December 9, at
9:30 a.m. in the Court West Lobby, our friends from
the Maryvale High School Guitar Ensemble and Jazz
Choir will be here to delight you with their Christmas
performance. Sunday, December 13, enjoy a Piano
Recital with Jackie Frye and her students at 3:00 p.m. in

Light Tours will be Wednesday, the 16th, at 5:30 p.m.
and 7:00 p.m. The Dickens Carolers will be here for
their annual performance on Thursday, December 17,

Hanukkah: The Festival
of Lights
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival
of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish
holiday commemorating the
rededication of the Holy Temple in
Jerusalem at the time of the
Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century
BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight
nights, starting on the 25th day of
Kislev according to the Hebrew
calendar, and may occur from late
November to late December on the
Gregorian calendar. From the Hebrew
word for “dedication” or
“consecration,” Hanukkah marks the
rededication of the Temple in
Jerusalem after its desecration by the
forces of Antiochus IV and
commemorates the “miracle of the
container of oil.” According to the
Talmud, at the re-dedication following
the victory of the Maccabees over the
Seleucid Empire, there was only
enough consecrated olive oil to fuel
the eternal flame in the Temple for
one day. Miraculously, the oil burned
for eight days, which was the length
of time it took to press, prepare and
consecrate fresh olive oil.
The festival is observed by the
kindling of the lights of a special
candelabrum, the nine-branched
Menorah or Hanukiah, one light on
each night of the holiday,
progressing to eight on the final
night. An extra light called a
shamash (Hebrew: “guard” or
“servant”) is also lit each night for
the purpose of lighting the others,
and is given a distinct location,
usually above or below the rest.
This year, Hanukkah begins at dusk
on Sunday, December 6. All
residents are invited for the Lighting
of the Menorah in the CW Lobby
each night at 4:00 p.m. Also on
December 8 at 10:30 a.m., join us in
the Activity Center for a Hanukkah
Party hosted by our friends at Smile
on Seniors. We will enjoy special
Hanukkah treats, including potato
latkes and jelly donuts. All residents
are welcome!
