Is the young and talented Alex Miles, lead
guitarist with the rock band ‘Evolution’
holding the guitar which is a ‘Dias’ copy of
a Gem, the original being designed by
guitarist ‘Stevie Ray Vaughan’. The guitar
has been autographed by the legendary
‘Status Quo’ drummer ‘John Coughlan’ and
it is the intention of Burnham Rock to
raffle the instrument to raise money for the
‘Evolution Project’. Additionally, it will also be signed by members of the ‘Geno
Washington Ram Jam Band’, members of
‘The Move’ and Jesse Wood’s band ‘Hogg’
who are playing at this years ‘Under A
Summer Moon’ music event on the 26th
July at the B.A.S.C ground, Burnham on
Sea, Somerset. Burnham Rock promoter
Gordon Clayton said “ Musicians playing at
the ‘Summer Moon’ will be signing the
guitar, and if Jesse Wood’s father Ronnie
turns up, he’ll be signing it as well”. Gordon
added “We intend to use the money to help
young bands play with professional sound
equipment during the summer holidays.

The guitar has been donated by The Editor
of the Scrumpy ‘n’ Western live music

Re the 2008 ‘Under a Summer Moon’
concert - Local promoters Jamie Roberts of
The Pier Tavern, Burnham on Sea, Malcolm Stratford of ‘Malcolm’s PA’s Hire,
Installations and Repairs ‘ plus Gordon and
Jeff of ‘Burnham Rock’, decided late in
2007 to come together to save the event
(which has been running for about 14
years) after last years event was rained
out. They have named their association
‘Alfresco Events’, and have decided to
make this year an all weather event with
cover for about 2000 people. The Credit

OLD FAITHFUL STOLEN
West country musician and songwriter,
Tim Bragg of The Cottage, Cothay Manor,
has had his drum kit stolen from out buildings close to his home. The kit, a black
Yamaha junior Manu Katche with Ludwig
snare drum and Paiste and Zildjian cymbals was used by Tim as the drummer with
the ‘Steve Tucker All Star Jazz Band’. The
kit has emotional ties for Tim and has seen
solid service in Somerset and through out
the west country. Tim used this kit on his
most recent album ‘Heaven on Earth’
(www.cdbaby.com/cd/timbragg5)
And can be heard on tracks at www.myspace.com/timbragg
Losing the drum kit means Tim has lost his
own very unique sound (built up over the
last thirty years). The drums are small and
the bass drum needs to be raised to be
played. There is a reward of £250.00 for it’s
safe return, so if you see or have info
please phone - 01823 674353

‘Two Choices’ made local headlines in the
summer of 2006 when they were asked to
support rock legends ‘The Who’ in their
home town of Brighton where Who front
man ‘Roger Daltrey’ said after the gig “One
of the best young bands I’ve seen, sure to
make the big time”. Since then ‘Two Choices’ have gone on to record and internationally release their excellent debut album
‘Longest Journey’ which is available on
iTunes, also from their gigs. Which was
recorded at The Animal Farm Atomic Studios, in London, produced by Ville and Matt
Leppanen, mastered by Donal Whelan @
Hafod Mastering, Cowbridge, Wales.

Back to the Sixties with
THE MOVE
Were one of the leading British rock bands
of the 1960’s from Birmingham, England
and were among the most popular British
bands to not find any success across the
Atlantic in the US. ‘The Move’ were led by
guitarist, singer and songwriter Roy Wood
(although Chris “Ace” Kefford was their
original leader), who composed all the
group’s UK singles and from 1968 also
sang lead vocals on many of them
(although Carl Wayne was their lead singer). They were extremely successful in
Britain in their early career, scoring nine
top 20 hit singles in five years, but they
were not well known in the United States,
mainly because they did not tour their until
the latter part of their career. Never the
less, they have been credited as an influence on many later groups on both sides of
the Atlantic. ‘The Move’ was formed from
several mid 60’s Birmingham based bands
from ‘Carl Wayne & the Vikings’,
‘Nightriders’, ‘The Mayfair Set’. The band
was influenced by the Beatles, Motown,
and the emerging American ‘West Coast’
sound, ‘The Move quickly established
themselves as one of the most exciting live
acts of that period. Beside Wood, the original members of the group were drummer
Bev Bevan, bass player Chris Kefford, vocalist Carl Wayne and guitarist Trevor Burton. The bands early gigs were marked by
outrageous stage antics masterminded by
the manager, Tony Secunda, such as Carl
Wayne pick axing television sets!! Plus -

old cars, busts of Adolf Hitler and the Rhodesian premier Ian Smith, just some of the
items smash to music! Secunda who also
managed Birmingham’s other major band
of the day ‘The Moody Blues’, got the Move
a weekly residency at London’s Marquee
club which had recently been vacated by
‘The Who’. They appeared at the club
dressed in gangster regalia, however they
remained living in the midlands. The independent record producer Denny Cordell
(Joe Cocker, Procol Harum) gave them a
record contract but even this was turned
into a media event by Secunda, who famously arranged for the band to sign their
contracts on the back of a topless female
model. Roy Wood wrote their first single
“Night of Fear”, a no 2 hit in the UK singles
chart January 1967 which began ‘The
Moves' practice of musical quotation (in
this case, the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky). Their second single “I can Hear the
Grass Grow”, was another major hit, reaching no 5 . ‘Flowers in the Rain’ was the first
track played on Radio 1 when it began
broadcasting on 30th September 1967,
introduced by Tony Blackburn. The song
reached no 2, was less guitar oriented than
their previous two singles, and feature an
inventive woodwind arrangement by producer Tony Visconti . The band have an
important part in the history of British rock,
not only for their music but with lead on’s.

BILL SHEFFIELD RETURNS
“Bill Sheffield” takes the stage unpretentiously, cradling a vintage Gibson acoustic.
At first he appears almost shy, his eyes
scanning the room, making connections.
He slowly starts into his own rendition of an
old blues classic, Robert Johnson. Before
long Bill takes control of the stage, captivating the audience, combining a finger
picking style that rolls over you like a freight
train with electrifying and dazzling guitar
work. There is no denying it, Bill Sheffield
is a master of the blues and a true master
of the guitar. He exudes the personality of
the songs he sings playing every song from
the heart. The minute you hear him you
know......
Although the foundation for Bill Sheffield’s
music is the blues, the live concert contains
elements of many other genes, folk, country and gospel. Classifying it as blues may
be too limiting. Americana may be the batter description. Honest, gutsy and passionate, an evening orchestrated by Bill

ROCK ‘n’ ROLL with
Boppin Darrin
Hi all and welcome to July, I hope you are
all still Rockin and Rollin. Just recently I
have seen two great bands, at two great
clubs, the first being “The Thundertones” at
Tony & Cheryl’s Rock ‘n’ Roll club in Taunton. These are a great R ‘n’ R band that did
a good mixture of strollers, jivers and boppers covering hits of Elvis, Buddy, Eddie
etc... All very smart and entertaining even
if your not into dancing the group was good
enough to watch and listen to. They pulled
a large group into the club, so the place
was packed, in between sets Tony did a
good job of keeping the crowd happy and
the floor busy with the dancers. Everyone
had a really good night and after talking to
the band, they said that they are in the
process of doing a CD, which I can’t wait to
hear so you will have to look out for that
one. If you wish to book the band then
contact them at [email protected]
Moving on we went to the Jive Inn, Bridgwater which has now changed hands and
is run by Bill and boy he has certainly
changed it around, it is £7.50 for the band
nights, nice decor through out with confederate flags and nice big cardboard statues
of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis
etc.... Every table had table cloths on with
a tea light and nibbles, it looked really
lovely. Under 16’s are free and made welcome as long as they are well behaved!!
They have a live band every month, plenty

of parking, cheap bar and nice big dance
floor. The band this night was ‘The Rhythm
Aces’, very smartly dressed in early 50’s
gear, Edwardian style drapes and played
all the classic hits, singing a lot of British
Rock ‘n’ Roll and early American hits by
Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Elvis, the
sound quality was good from these 3, Howie on the slap bass, Noz on the drums and
Pete on the guitar and vocals, again the
place was packed with the dance floor
staying busy all night, in between sets it
was DJ Blue Jean Bop keeping everyone
happy. We were luck enough for the band
to sing a few extra songs for their encore, I
don’t think we wanted them to stop, a very
good night and well worth checking out.
They have got a CD for sale which I bought
and when I got home and listed to it I was
not disappointed, it certainly is a good one
to have in my collection. To book this band

HAMSTERS ROCK THE WHARF!
After a gap of two years last night my wife
and I went to see our favourite live band,
‘The Hamsters’. Having not been to the
Wharf before we didn’t know what the gig
would be like, what kind of crowd etc... So
things got off to a very good start when a
guy we had spoken to in the car park gave
us one of his tickets as he had been stood
up!! Hey, there are some nice people out
there! I must say the venue seemed well
laid out and well staffed, volunteer stewards who weren't the great I am’s!
So two years down the line for us, ‘The
Hamsters’ came on and rocked like only
these guys can, with an evenings worth of
Hendrix and ZZ Top material! I have been
going to see these guys ever since 1990
when I saw them support ‘Dr Feelgood’ at
Cheltenham town hall, and having not
heard of them at the time thought Wow!, I’ll
have to have some of that thank you very
much! So over the following years I and
then we (I introduced my wife to them when
JULY ‘08
issue 4 vol 5

we got married) have seen them more
times than I can remember, Gloucester,
Cheltenham, Bristol, Milton Keynes, St.
Austell, Bodmin, the list goes on and on I’m
afraid! But I digress, back to The Wharf
show. This time the band played alternating Hendrix then ZZ Top songs, where as I
think I have seen them do one half of each.
All the songs they did are too many to both
remember and list but you see I like just
about everything they do! Stone Free, All
Along the Watchtower, Let me Stand Next
to your Fire, Star Spangled Banner, Wind
Cries Mary to name a few Hendrix numbers.
Then of course we had ZZ Top and TV
Dinners, Legs, I’m Bad I’m Nationwide, La
Grange, Tush, Pin Cushion and the last
one they did Sharp Dress Man where half
way through they swap over instruments,
without loosing a beat, and carry on! A
great night was had by all! Hey it was a
Hamster gig! Had a chat with Otis the
drummer ( a friend of ours) at the end,
great to catch up on - Continued page 15

Continued from 14 - a few things and then
it was time to let them break down all the
kit as they were off to Reading that night.
Thanks for a brill night guys!

Up-Date on Pete Sharp
Congratulations to Weston-Super-Mare
musician ‘Pete Sharp’ and his marriage to
Amanda in July, all the best to you both
from the Scrumpy ‘n’ Western. More news
is that Pete has started work recording a
CD album for which he has had lots of
Weston & Bristol musicians offering to play
on it, one to look foreward to hearing. The
concept is a move away from rock towards
an acoustic roots/blues crossover with a
jug band feel. Pete has been out recently
performing these songs live as a duo with
him playing guitar/vocals with Mark (the
Harp) Gowland on the mouth iron! Under
the name ‘Sharpy and Harpy’ which they
performed at the London Inn, W S M in the
middle of May, which was well received by
the audience, so this outing has encouraged Pete to do more with this project.
Sounds exciting, Pete is already a busy
guy with ‘Oblivion’ and the ‘One Eyed
Jacks’. You can see the ‘One Eyed Jacks’
live on July 4th @The Back Bar live, High
Street, Weston-Super-Mare. For gig info or
to book Pete Sharp e-mail [email protected]
SHAMMICK ACOUSTIC SESSION

HEAVENS BASEMENT
It’s always nice to see a venue that
screams out it’s identity the second you
walk in. There’s not many places that greet
you with the framed lurid yellow suit as
worn by one of Showaddywaddy, but then
again there’s not many places where the
walls are lined with art work and guitars.
For those not in the know, ‘Heaven’s Basement’ are the band formally known as
Roadstar, who were themselves the band
formally known as Hurricane Party. This
name change, however, is due to the fact
that ‘Heaven’s Basement’ is for intents and
purposes a completely new band, and anyone expecting tracks from Roadstar will
not be a happy bunny! It’s not a long set,
as all the songs are pretty much fresh out
of the brain box, but there’s not many who
can say it’s not a success. The stage is set,
the lighting setting the mood, the band are
simply awesome. Singer Richie Heavens
(he of Basement) has been praised many
times for his natural ability and it’s easy to
see why. Blessed with a perfect rock voice
he seems to channel bits of Jim Morrison
and Steven Tyler, only to twist them with a
slice of Welshness and a heap of attitude.
It helps of course, that the songs that the
band have written since their rebirth are
superb, the best is saved til the end, I could
watch this band every night for a week (and
some fans are doing that) and not tire of
them. Put the word out, because ‘Heaven’s
Basement’ are gonna be hotter than Hell.

BACK TO THE SIXTIES
GENO WASHINGTON
There cannot be many people who lived
through the 1960’s that did not dance or
foot tap to ‘Geno Washington and The
Ram Jam Band’ who had very little singles
chart success ( ‘Water’ only reached 39 in
1966 followed by ‘Hi Hi Hazel’ no 45, ‘Que
Sera Sera’ no 43 and ‘Michael’ no 39 in
February 1967) But had two of the biggest
selling UK albums of the sixties. Amazingly
both of these were live albums, Hand Clappin, Foot Stompin, Funky Butt live was in
the album charts for 48 weeks of the year
1966 and was only out sold by ‘The Sound
of Music’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’.
US Soul acts rarely visited the UK and
having come over as a part of the US air
force and stayed, Geno was our soul man.
His level of touring and the high energy of
his gigs was, and still is (as immortalized
by ‘Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ in the 80’s hit
‘Geno’) the stuff of legends. During his
sets, the beat was continuous and the hits
were incessant. It was really ‘Geno’ who
pioneered this go, go style of performing
and the audiences simply could not get
enough, with the likes of ‘Jimi Hendrix’,
‘Cream’ and ‘Pink Floyd’ in support ‘Geno’
could never relax. Eventually, having made
Pye Records and numerous managers millions of pounds, ‘Geno’ decided a break
EXTRA
might be a good idea. Rock ‘n’ Roll had
taken it’s toll and being on the road with
every sixties act you care to mention, had
finally drained the mighty Washington batteries. ‘Geno’ did some recordings in the
States in the seventies, some never released stuff with ‘The Beach Boys’ for example, but largely retreated from the world
of show biz and studied hypnosis and meditation. These spiritual meanderings were
abruptly halted when in 1980 Blighty beckoned once more. A call came from old
friends in the UK that a tribute called ‘Geno’
(as mentioned) had gone to number one in
the charts. In interviews, the singer, Kevin
Rowland, was speaking of this legendary
soul man, whose name they used to chant
up and down the land and renewed public
interest in ‘Geno’ was growing for a new
generation, soon, ‘Geno’ was back in the
UK and back out on the road. The arrival of
the nineties saw ‘Geno’ go back to his roots
(he was a blues singer originally in his
home town of Evansville, Indiana) doing a
show called ‘Cut Loose and Singing the
Blues’. The new millennium kicked off for
‘Geno’ with the desire to “get some of the
stuff down on tape”, which resulted in a
new album. Always busy and still in high
demand for his live shows. For more info

A Real Jem! - “The LPSO”
Perfect for every event!
The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra or The LPSO (as they are simply know)
are a four piece, multi-instrumentalist vocal
band who using a numerous instruments,
props, costumes and audience participation, present a high energy show with the
emphasis on FUN. Basing their music on
the loose concept of ‘skiffle’, the orchestra
play in many styles, encompassing Country, Blues, Jazz, Cajun, Cossack, Irish,
Klezmer and other influences from numerous corners and cupboards of the world.
They are bright, audience friendly, colourful, enthusiastic and ‘in your face’. In fact
nobody sleeps while they are on! Skiffle
was a music style which came to fruition in
the 1950’s Great Britain when artists like
‘Lonnie Donegan’ showed kids that they
could make their own music simply using
wash boards, tea chests basses, with guitars. All you needed were a couple of cords
and your granny’s kitchen utensils and you
had a band! The LPSO have extended this
idea greatly, emphasising raw percussion
but blending it with musical dexterity on a
variety of instruments, which include fiddle,
mandolin, banjo, guitar, trumpet and harmonica. Much of their material is original,
but you will recognise much of what they
do, although it will be in their own unique
style! The bands members are very talented in many fields of the entertainment
world. Between them they have earned
their laurels in the folk scene, cabaret,
theatre, festivals, television, radio and the
high profile corporate market. Since forming in 2001, The LPSO have appeared at
many venues and in a variety of situations
from Leeds City Varieties Theatre, Tower
Arts Centre, Winchester, The Grand Order
of Water Rats Annual Ball, Skagen Festival
(Denmark), Crawley Folk Festival, Various
venues in London, Henley Arts Festival,
The Kihveli Soikoon Festival in Finland, to
mention a few. (The Finnish festival is a
place where skiffle has truly found a new
lease of life.) So look out for an LPSO gig,
join in the fun, let your hair down and enjoy

a bit of musical escapism where very little,
if anything, is taken seriously! Except, of
course, for a truly eccentric percussionist,
Captain Cabbage, who really has to be
seen to be believed!
The LPSO comprises of the following personnel - Mike Martin : Vocals, guitar, banjo,
harmonica, ukulele, duck!! As the son of
casual comedian George Martin, Mike has
been steeped in the tradition of variety
since birth. Also a writer..... 2 widely diverse books published; ‘Noddies,The Film
Extra’s Guide’ (Arlon) and ‘From Crockett
to Custer’ (Trafford)... He is in addition
reknowed for hid Jack the Ripper walking
tours. Martyn Oram : Vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, frog!! A founder member of
the successful 1980’s group “Waterfall”.
Martyn’s powerful fiddle playing sets the
stage a light. Captain Cabbage : Vocals,
percussion, trumpet, mini-harmonica, watering can, chicken, dog!!! The Captain is
arguably human, but sometimes it’s hard to
be sure. He is certainly unique, has also
appeared in “Blakes 7” as a monster and a
corpse on “Alas Smith & Jones”. The Right
Horrible Ronald Regan : vocals, double
bass, trumpet, sousaphone, pig etc.. Ronald was a founder member of the reknowned madcap band ‘Nuts n Bolts’ and
has been known to utter a showbiz anecdote or two! In the past they have toured
abroad, this year Germany and Scandinavia, thereby doing their bit to either enhance or destroy the reputation of Brits
abroad!! So do not be fazed by the name@
The LPSO are much more than a skiffle
band! To The LPSO, skiffle means
“anything goes” as long as it’s musical,
entertaining and fun following in the tradition of ‘Spike Jones & the City Slickers’, or
‘The Nitwits’, and all other bands who ying
on their yangs!! A Cd is due anytime with
special guests ‘Gordon Giltrap’ and ‘Joe
Pasquale’ (unfortunately Gordon tells the
jokes and Joe plays guitar) For more info

UP DATE ON LISA MILLS
Lisa Mills from Mobile, Alabama is an
exceptional singer and songwriter singing
in Janis Joplin’s first band ‘Big Brother and
the Holding Company’ after Janis’ demise
performing all the Janis Joplin parts, while
given the freedom to give her own interpretation of the music. She toured with BBHC
for three years through out the United
States, Canada and Europe. She has been
compared to Etta James, Billie Holiday and
Brenda Lee but her main comparison is an
extraordinary vocal similarity to Bonnie
Raitt . Led Zeppelins Robert Plant found
her and had no hesitation in asking her to
open his American Stadium shows - they
have performed on the same bills across
the US and Europe. Lisa has also appeared with Dr John on his UK tour last
October and, although she played in front
of more than 40,000 people Lisa admits to
liking it best when she can connect with her
audience. Accompanied by Ian Jennings of
Big Town Playboys / Jeff Beck / Van Morrison / Eric Clapton fame on the upright
Bass we are all in for a treat! Take Robert
Plants advice ‘You should all check her out
- she has a wonderful voice’.

EKO RANGER 12 is back!
EXTRA
good and playable guitar, excellent value
for the money. So what of these new ones?
Are they the same as before, playable but
with a solid build feel - heavy! And of
course there is the sound! So I was lucky
to find a shop with them hanging on their
racks. Well according to my research or
rather the marketing brochure giving the
full story of the remarkable Rangers and
detailing why the new versions are faithful
to the originals: from the familiar, slim, bolt
on necks, right down to the zero fret, adjustable bridge and even a 1960’s vintage
metallic truss rod cover. They have even
got the original designer of these guitars
back - ‘Remo Serrangeli’, who is in charge
of production and actively involved in R &
D - and they say there is still a lot of development going on? Right so they look like
the original guitars, the makers have added
a two-way truss rod and they are not as
heavy as they used to be, according to the
makers everyone says is an advantage?
The sound is excellent, the ones I played
well set up, nice action priced at £159.00
and the 12 string at £199.00, oh yes they
are made in China. (The originals made in
Italy). If you are looking to buy a new 6 or
12 on a budget and retro appeals to you
then go for it, nice all round value. If you
just want a good 6 string under a £150.00
then take a look at the brand ‘Aston’ these
are excellent for the price, plus there’s
Crafter, Tanglewood all makes worth a
look (Play) of. If you have never played
before but thinking of starting to learn, now
is the time to buy, for the price of musical
instruments in general for the past 10 years
has been so cheap!! This I am sure is
about to change due in part to the cost of
materials and the increase in Oil. If you are
starting, another tip is take a mate who
plays, to advise and check what you are
buying is suitable for you and you feel
comfortable, holding it . But back to the
Eko’s nice to see an old name back, but
sadly to me not quite the same!!
Back in December ‘07 it was announced in
the music trade magazines that one of the
most successful selling guitars, the Eko
Ranger 6 and 12 was being re launched.
During the 60’s and early 70’s this was one
of the top selling brands until we discovered the Japanese could make superb
guitars even cheaper! Bye bye the Italian
made Eko’s. Now I have in the past owned
