Spotlight on: Lodge Trustees (Grand Lodge Statute 12.070; 15.010)
Every Elk’s Lodge has Trustees. Lodge #57 has five (5) Trustees and as provided by statute, each Trustee is elected to a five-year term. Trustees responsibilities include control of the lodge funds, investments, and property; creating a
lodge budget; meet monthly; establish an accident prevention program to protect
the lodge from claims for accidents and injuries; exercise general supervision
over the property of the lodge; and ensure all facilities are in good repair.
They are expected to attend regular monthly Trustees meetings and as many
lodge meetings as practical. Any member in good standing may be nominated
and elected to the office of Lodge Trustee. Nominations are made at the first regular lodge
meeting in February and the annual elections are held at the second regular lodge meeting in
February.
Elected officers are installed no sooner than March 15 and no later than April 15.
You will note that elsewhere in this newsletter is an Official Notice from Lodge Trustee Tom
Walker regarding the 2nd phase of the Lift project. This is an example of the type of project
for which Lodge Trustees are responsible.
GL Newsletter, August 2014 Drug Awareness: Powdered alcohol: What are they thinking?
By FRANK SCARPINO, Special Contributor
A new product going by the brand name Palcohol, which got a rush of media attention recently, is a freezedried alcohol in powder form, and is packaged in small packets that promise an easy way to take a stiff drink
on the go. Packets resemble a juice pouch with enough room to add liquid and contain powder with the
equivalent of a shot of liquor. Plans are to sell vodka and rum versions as well as six cocktail flavors. The
ounce of powder combined with 5 ounces of a non-alcoholic liquid would have the alcohol content of a regular mixed drink. It is not for sale yet; federal regulators initially pulled approval for Palcohol but only due to a
label discrepancy on how much was in the bag. The company says it will resubmit the labels for approval.
Powdered alcohol sold in pouches are easy to carry, conceal and abuse, with potentially dangerous consequences. The risk of abuse is high, experts say. The convenience of the packets could encourage overconsumption of alcohol, as well as accidents caused by intoxication, such as drunken driving. There is concern that the new powdery substance will be inhaled like illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin, resulting in
an immediate high.
It is said that Palcohol is aimed at outdoors enthusiasts and travelers who want to carry liquor with less
weight than bottles. If obtaining alcohol was too troublesome before, Palcohol has certainly swooped in to
save the day. Gone are the days of lugging around heavy bottles and cumbersome packs of alcohol. Now, all
one needs for a boozy drink is a bit of water and some alcohol powder. But who are they kidding, Palcohol is
directly targeting sporting events and concert audiences, assuring potential users that there is nothing worse
than watching football or a live music event sober, and it won’t cost you those high stadium prices. The bottom line is that this product will be attractive and dangerous to young people. It has happened before with the
alcohol-laced energy drinks, packaged to attract the young and easy to buy in a convenient store setting.

2nd OFFICIAL NOTICE
Proposal for 2nd Lift as Part of Elks Building Application
VOTING on this proposal will take place at the August 19, 2014 Lodge Meeting at 7:30 PM
In accordance with Grand Lodge Statues, Section 16.050, I am proposing the installation and funding of the 2 nd
lift at Elks Lodge # 57 so that members and other persons with disabilities may have access to the Lodge floor
otherwise known as the Ballroom. This lift will make our Lodge compliant with the ADA. In addition, since November 2013 the Club has lost out on 15 weddings solely because we do not have this lift.
The total cost of the 2nd lift is $57,200. Currently the Lodge has $29,009.31 in a saving account for the lift. That
means we are $28,190.69 short of fully funding. I am further proposing that we get a loan for the amount we are
short. A capital fund appeal is planned to pay off the loan amount.
The lift equipment will be purchased from Arrow Lift, the manufacturer of the 1 st lift, and will operate in the same
manner. Capelle Bros & Diedrich, Inc will be the general contractor and will do the actual installation. The
building permit from the City of Fond du Lac has already been secured and the initial construction plans have
been “Conditionally Approved” by the city Building Inspector. The condition of the approval is based upon the
pending approval from the State Elevator Inspector of the actual lift equipment.
Finally, I am proposing that Tom Walker (Trustee) be the Lodge Representative for the permit from Grand Lodge.
As the Lodge Representative, Tom will be the person of contact for Grand Lodge, Arrow Lift, and Capelle Bros &
Diedrich. The application process to the Grand Lodge is underway and the Board of Grand Trustees Building Application Member for our jurisdiction has been contacted and stated that we are on the right track for full approval.

Per Member Donations as of 7/13/2014
$1.48 Per Member
As you can see by the amount listed in the upper right hand part of the page, we have not sent in the donations from our members
who donated to the ENF along with their dues. Hopefully the report will have been sent in by the time you receive this newsletter.
Thanks to all who donated along with their dues. When I receive the updated report from the ENF, I’ll update the ENF donor boards
in the Lodge foyer. Look through your monthly Elks magazine to see what other Lodges across the country are doing with the
Grants they have received from the ENF. We’ve been very fortunate over the past years to have received CIP (Community Investment Program) funds to support numerous community programs here in Fond du Lac.
If you have not donated to the ENF during this Lodge year, please do so in the near future. We need all our Lodge members to
help support this vital Elks program. Remember, Elks Care/Elks Share!
Let’s Keep Working Together!
