At the time of his graduation the interest rate had just fallen and the market for home sales was strong and the market for refinancing existing mortgages even stronger. The quickest and most profitable job out of college was working for an appraisal firm turning out multiple residential appraisals a week. After a year to year and a half, the economy turned a bit south and the interest rates started to rise. Appraisal requests were not as abundant. Pete saw the community he grew up in, Cudahy, was going to have a revaluation. He made an inquiry to the firm performing the revaluation to see if he could assist. He got his feet wet by working nights in Bayside with interior and maintenance inspections. Then he left the appraisal firm to work full time assisting with the revaluation in Cudahy. That was just the beginning. He went on to assist with revaluations in Bayside and Stevens Point. In 1996 he went to work for the City of Kenosha Assessor’s Office. Pete has been the Deputy Assessor since 1999. A member of WAAO since 1995, Pete is currently a director. He is also a member of the Ad Hoc Commercial Sales Committee. He was Chairman of the League Conference in September 2011. In the past he was both a member and chair of the Personal Property Committee and the Education Committee. He received Presidential Citations in 2002 and 2005. Pete likes that his job requires him to be a jack of all trades. One day you may have to crunch numbers on a complex income approach. Other days you have to turn on the charm and use your public relations skills. Some days an assessor has to act as an educator, other days you are an attorney defending your position. Every day and every situation presents unique and interesting challenges. The downside of the job is trying to fulfill expectations of extremely accurate and well researched assessments while funding, amount of personnel, and quality of resources decrease every year. Unique commercial appeals are a challenge as well. If he could make changes to assessing in Wisconsin, Pete would like for the public, DOR, and government officials to truly understand the assessment process. Also, for the same parties to understand the importance of accurate, uniform, and equitable assessments as the taxes generated from the assessments are one of the largest bills most people get during the year. If government officials and the public would realize this importance, adequate funding would be provided to assessors in order to produce and defend the values. Pete has been married to his wife, Gina, for 15 years. They have an 8 year old daughter, Nora, and a 4 year old son, Eli. Most of Pete’s free time is dedicated to his family and family activities. Many people have told him to enjoy every minute with his children, and to create memories that will last their lifetimes. He has followed that advice and most of the time away from work involves one or both of his children. Although he has not picked up a golf club, softball bat, or played a pick-up game of basketball in over four years, Pete is a big sports fan. Residing in Kenosha has intensified 16 www.waao.org AVOW - Winter 2011 FEATURED ASSESSOR (continued) his Packer and Brewer allegiances as it seems he is often surrounded by Bear, Cub, and/or White Sox fans. Something you might not know about Pete is during college he worked summers for Wisconsin Electric under downtown Milwaukee. Downtown Milwaukee has numerous steam pipes/tunnels located underground. They are used to heat most buildings in the winter. He assisted crews in maintaining and checking these systems. “I tend not to become involved in anything until I am comfortable with the surroundings/situation. Tend not to like jumping in feet first.” – Pete Krystowiak IN MEMORY OF: Sue Ellen Kaiser, 53, of Fond du Lac, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at St. Agnes Hospital. On Sept. 22, 1979, she married James Kaiser at St. Patrick's Church in Fond du Lac. Sue was formerly employed at the Fond du Lac County Health Care Center, St. Agnes Hospital Medical Records, and currently in the Fond Du Lac Assessor's office.
