FROM THE DIRECTOR
I first fell under the spell of Maury Yeston's musical masterwork when
I saw it on Broadway in 1997. This was before James Cameron's
blockbuster film. I had been fascinated with the story of the sinking of the
"unsinkable" ship Titanic since I was a kid. As I sat in the Lunt-Fontanne
Theatre, a lush and epic score unfolded and Peter Stone's book for the
musical managed to move expertly between three classes of passengers,
officers, and serving staff. The writing took me into the different worlds
and perspectives, the hope and dreams of the denizens of Titanic as
it sailed West toward the promise for many of starting a new life. Back
when people still had CD changers in their cars, my CD of Titanic lived
in my car for nearly a decade. I found it to be an amazing radio play full
of gorgeous melodies and engaging stories. The Broadway production
made the best use of the technology of the day, but as the show played
over in my car and my mind, I kept dreaming of a production that would
give us a stylized sense of what it looked like on the actual ship. Enter
the age of theatrical projections! I'm very pleased to be working with
Jon Infante, projection designer on this production. We will be blending
theatre magic with actual images of the Titanic. My intent is to enhance
the storytelling, but not to overshadow it. After all, this is the story of one
of the biggest disasters of all time. It's also the individual stories of the
immigrants and the über wealthy of the day. Thanks to Steve Glaudini for
green lighting this rarely seen Tony Award winning musical and to all of
you for attending tonight!

TITANIC MYTHS AND LEGENDS:
FROM FILM TO BROADWAY
Since the RMS Titanic tragically sank in the Atlantic Ocean on April 14, 1912, innumerable
myths about the ship’s final hours have been generated mostly by the numerous films,
books, and conspiracy theories that have been loosely based on the events of that fateful
evening. James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic is the most recent which has engrained on
the public conscience numerous myths while romanticizing the events of that night using two fictional
characters (Jack and Rose) as his main protagonists. What we do know as fact is that 1,500 men, women,
and children perished that night. More than 2,000 passengers and crew were onboard the ship:

One of the most jarring plot elements of Cameron’s Titanic is the depiction of third class passengers
maliciously being prevented from reaching lifeboats. Evidence at the British inquiry following the
sinking did suggest that initially some of the gates were locked as stewards waited for instructions.
When the gates were finally opened, most of the lifeboats had already launched. The inquiry
revealed no malicious intent existed. Another historical aspect to note is that some third class
passengers were reluctant to part with their luggage and belongings.
The seeds for a musical version of Titanic were planted in 1985 when composer and lyricist Maury
Yeston took note of the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic that year: "What drew me to the project
was the positive aspects of what the ship represented – 1) humankind's striving after great artistic
works and similar technological feats, despite the possibility of tragic failure, and 2) the dreams
of the passengers on board: 3rd Class, to immigrate to America for a better life; 2nd Class, to live a
leisured lifestyle in imitation of the upper classes; 1st Class, to maintain their privileged positions
forever. The collision with the iceberg dashed all of these dreams simultaneously, and the subsequent
transformation of character of the passengers and crew had, it seemed to me, the potential for great
emotional and musical expression onstage.”
For their musical, Yeston and author Peter Stone set about telling the real stories of those onboard
the Titanic. Their research methods were extensive with the transcripts of the American and British
inquiries being especially valuable. They employed a researcher who indexed facts day-by-day, by
hour, and minute-by-minute for the ship’s final night. Titanic opened on Broadway in 1997 (the same
year the movie blockbuster was released) playing for 804 performances and 27 previews. It captured
many Tony Awards that season, including Best Musical.
This production pays homage to the people onboard the Titanic: the passengers, the crew, and the
emigrants of 3rd class who were onboard on their way to America for a better life and never made it.

Dear Friends,
Thanks to donor commitment, we were able to
end fiscal year 2015 2% above revenue goal
and $72,000 below our original budget. Thank
you! The combination of continued generosity,
and our internal prudence and resourcefulness,
Toria Watson
Jane Mitchell
enabled us to support educational and
community arts outreach programs as well as provide Moonlight Stage
Productions much needed additional funds to support year-round programming
at Moonlight Amphitheatre.
Theatre arts rely on two sources of income: funds raised from ticket sales
and philanthropic contributions from private donors. With your additional
contribution we help our community thrive, and we do that by presenting the
highest quality live theatre, providing partnership opportunities, and preparing
our youth with artistically innovative education programs. These components are
important economic drivers to our community and region.
The Moonlight Cultural Foundation takes great pride in serving the City of Vista
and Moonlight Stage Productions and Moonlight Presents. We support the
Moonlight Amphitheatre as a community gathering place where people can
come together to celebrate, heal, escape through Broadway caliber productions
and cultural arts programming.
As always, it is your ultimate participation in the arts that makes Moonlight
Stage Productions one of Southern California’s most professional and mature
performing arts institutions and the jewel of San Diego North County.
Gratefully,

Thoroughly Modern Millie
OCTOBER 14-23, 2016 | MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATRE
The winner of six TONY Awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern
Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when
“moderns” including a flapper named Millie Dillmount were bobbing their
hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules
of love. Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie
tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in
search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were
entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever. Based
on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new
songs and bright dance numbers. From explosive tap numbers to a Fred and Ginger routine on
a window ledge, frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences
will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfect evening of madcap merriment.
