A BIT ABOUT ME (and how I came to LOVE Metal)
• I was picked on when I was young
• I was tomboy
• I played classical piano
• Raised in a secular family
• I was obsessed with counterculture and anything that
rebelled against societal norms
• 13th birthday I pierced my own ear, bought Marilyn Manson
– Antichrist Superstar and picked up an electric guitar
• Metal gave me strength and celebrated everything
mainstream society had told me was bad and wrong
A BIT ABOUT ME (and how I came to LOVE Metal)
• In highschool I found people that listened to Metal shared
similar interests
• Straight out of highschool I worked at a&b Sound in the
music department for over four years
• I became heavily involved in the Vancouver Metal scene
and went to a lot of Metal shows
• I worked at the Commodore Ballroom on Granville for two
years where I saw a lot of Metal shows
• Although I know a fair amount about metal, I wanted to
know more about it and share it with YOU!
METAL INFLUENCES
CLASSICAL MUSIC:
• Operatic, projected vocal style from back before
there was amplification
• Artists like Wagner whose orchestra was heavily
loaded with bass
• Artists like Bach who used improvisation
http://web.media.mit.edu/~mike/music/hawle
y-farbood-6-2000/i/wagner.jpg
BLUES:
• Blues guitar riffs and scales (the tritone)
• Black Sabbath was originally a jazz/blues band
POVERTY:
• Bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep
Purple and Slipknot grew up in rough, run down
neighbourhoods

BLACK SABBATH (1968Present)
Black Sabbath created an evil
demonic sound that came to
define Metal
Used the tritone – Diminished
5th – on the blue’s scale..
In the middle ages the tritone
was used to summon the devil
and was prohibited

MASCULINITY AND METAL
• Metal music has always been
dominated by men
• A place where men can celebrate
being men
• Glam Rock cross-dressers were seen
as daring and the most “manly” as
they were comfortable enough with
their sexuality to dress like women

WOMEN IN METAL
• Girl school was the first popular
female Metal band, formed in
1978 and still active today
• Women are still a minority in
Metal but more women are
beginning to master the
“gutteral” style of vocals

Metal Culture

should
shouldn’t do
• how

– freaks and weirdos, EVERYONE
Release of agression
WELCOME
Self-expression
• Gives people a sense of belonging,
Self-confidence – a strong kind of music
community and brotherhood (the boys
club)
“you feel weird, but you’re not”
• Most “Metalheads” dress in a similar
Way of dress – BLACK, leather, band shirts, studs, fashion
tattoos – black, leather, silver, studs,
patches, army pants, combat boots and
Community/brotherhood
tattoos are all characteristic
Male dominated
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6Ye7u-TvPI
• Metal truly is a global phenomenon – most
countries have a metal scene. The
majority of metal bands hail from North
and South America and Europe
METAL CULTURE
• MOSHPITS allow you to dance and
move and thrash and scream and sing
and headbang and FEEL and
EXPERIENCE the music – without
feeling judged for it
• A place where “boys can be boys” and
the girls can be boys as well – also
without judgement!

SYMBOLS IN METAL
• Religious symbols are often used for
shock value, such as crosses (rightsideup or upside-down), and pentagrams
• Skulls are often used, again for shock
value, but also to represent death

SYMBOLS IN METAL
DEVIL HORNS
• Ronnie James Dio of Black
Sabbath came from a traditional
Italian family
• His grandmother was
superstitious and used to give
people the “malloic” which was
protection against the evil eye
• Could use the malloic to give the
evil eye as well
• Used during his time with Black
Sabbath and caught on
http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/ronnie-james-dio.jpg
METAL IN POLITICS / AS A FORM OF RESISTANCE
SOME EXAMPLES:
• Rage Against the Machine has made music
advocating for the indigenous Zapatista
group in Mexico
• Leftover Crack (a punk/metal group) writes
music against capitalism, with songs such
as “F*ck World Trade”
http://smashingmag.com/tour/trphoto/yusuke/080209rage
/DSC_7660.jpg
• Many bands such as Slayer openly oppose
Christian ideals in their lyrics
