Mansfield University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education,
is committed to a policy of affirmative action, and assures an equal opportunity to all persons
regardless of race, color, religion, handicap, ancestry, national origin, age, veteran status, or sex.
Marie McKee
President, The Corning Museum of Glass
M
arie McKee has served as president of The Corning Museum of Glass since
1998. She is responsible for leading the Museum in its vision to be the
international leader in glass scholarship, education, and preservation.
Building on the outstanding scholarship of the institution, McKee has focused on
creating programming and facilities that provide a rich and vibrant museum experience
for visitors from around the world. In addition, she has helped build the Museum into a
strong cultural and educational center for the local community.
In 2001, under McKee’s leadership, the Museum completed a $65 million capital
reconstruction project that included the renovation of the Rakow Research Library, an
expansion of its studio to include a “Make Your Own Glass” experience for visitors,
creation of the Hot Glass Show, and a renovation of the main Museum building.
Under her direction, Museum staff have exceeded nearly all fiscal and operational goals, Museum attendance
has grown by 20 percent, average visit time has increased from 2 to 4.5 hours, and glassmaking demonstrations have
expanded internationally through the development of a mobile Hot Glass Roadshow and the “Glassmaking at Sea”
program sponsored by Celebrity Cruises.
From 1998 to 2008, McKee also served as Chairman of Steuben Glass, the world-renowned art glass maker
founded by Frederick Carder. In 2008, she successfully led the sale of Steuben Glass to the Schottenstein Stores
Corporation.
Previously, McKee held a series of human resources leadership positions at Corning Incorporated. She joined
Corning in 1979 as equal employment opportunity consultant and moved on to strategic positions in minority
programs, executive personnel planning, and corporate strategic staffing. From 1996 to 1998, she served as Corning’s
Corporate Diversity Officer and Senior Vice President, Human Resources. McKee played an instrumental role in
designing and implementing Corning’s human resource strategies, business processes, and organization change efforts to
increase both the human and business effectiveness of the company.
McKee holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University and an M.B.A. Certificate in
Management Development from Simmons College.
McKee serves on the boards of trustees for The Corning Museum of Glass, The Corning Foundation, The Rockwell
Museum of Western Art, and The National Women’s Hall of Fame. She is a director of Duke Energy Corporation.
Our History
M
ansfield University dates to 1857 when the Mansfield Classical Seminary opened with 105 students.
In 1862 the institution was designated a State Normal School for the training of teachers. Enrollment
had grown to 400 by 1905. In 1927, Mansfield became the first school in Pennsylvania to be designated a State
Teachers College, authorized by the State Board of Education to grant bachelor of science degrees in elementary
and secondary education, music, and home economics. In 1960, the school became Mansfield State College, a
multi-purpose institution offering a broad range of curricula. On July 1, 1983, Mansfield University came into
being as a unit of the State System of Higher Education. Mansfield University has thirty-four active baccalaureate
degree programs, six associate degree programs, and six master’s programs, with a fall 2013 enrollment of 2,717
undergraduates and 253 graduate students, for a total enrollment of 2,970 students.

Honors Program
T
he Honors Program at Mansfield University is a 24-credit, multi-disciplinary academic program featuring
innovative course work, challenging subjects, and opportunities for cultural enrichment in the liberal arts. This
program is designed for students with a strong record of academic achievement and a desire for new learning experiences.
It is open to undergraduates of all majors and designed to provide an intellectually stimulating experience for outstanding
students. The Honors Program enables students to explore subjects that interest them in greater depth than may be possible
in traditional courses, and it also allows students to apply their knowledge across academic fields. It is the goal of the Honors
Program to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to achieve their full potential during their
academic career at Mansfield University.

*The Processional and Recessional
The processional and recessional are traditional parts of the Commencement ceremony that symbolize the
relationship between faculty and students. In the processional, students process through the ranks of the faculty, giving
faculty the opportunity to show their respect and congratulations to their students.
Please take your seat by 12:45 p.m. and remain seated throughout the processional, ceremony, and recessional,
leaving all aisles clear. You are invited to meet your graduate near the entrance to the gymnasium once the recessional is
completed.

Academic Attire
The traditional attire worn at Commencement exercises indicate the academic achievement of the
individuals taking part in the ceremony. Its use, which originated at English and European universities during
the twelfth and thirteenth centuries came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of Kings College
(now Columbia University).
In 1895 the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, met at Columbia to
draft a code to regulate the design of gowns and hoods for various degrees and to fix the colors indicating
the various academic disciplines. This code has been adopted by most colleges and universities in the United
States. It was revised in 1932 and again in 1959.
Gowns: The color as well as cut of the gowns varies. Although most doctoral gowns are black, some are
the color of the university conferring the degree. The doctoral gown is trimmed in velvet with three twoinch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in
front. Although usually black, the velvet may be of a color indicating the nature of the degree. Masters’ and
Bachelors’ gowns have no such trim.
The level of degree held is indicated by the cut of the gown. Doctoral gowns have full sleeves which
are round and open. Gowns worn by Bachelors have long pointed sleeves and those worn by Masters have
long, closed fuller sleeves, which reach nearly to the wearer’s knees. The arm goes through a slit giving the
appearance of short sleeves.
Hoods: The hood seems to have had a more practical origin. During the Middle Ages monks wore
hoods to protect their tonsured heads in the winter and as a container to collect alms. It is the most significant
part of academic attire. Its shape and size indicate the degree of the wearer. The color of the velvet border
indicates the academic field. The lining represents the colors of the institution granting the degree. The
Bachelor’s hood is three feet long and has a two-inch velvet border; the Master’s hood is three and one-half
feet long and has a three inch border; and the Doctor’s hood is four feet with a five inch border. The Mansfield
University hood is lined with red and black stripes.
Traditional Colors: Representative colors that one often sees are:
Black........................................................................ Associates
Citron............................................Social Science, Social Work
White............................................................. Arts and Letters
Gold......................Science, Computer & Information Science
Pink................................................................................. Music
Light blue..................................................................Education
Apricot.........................................................................Nursing
Drab....................................................Business Administration
Mortarboards: The mortarboard cap evolved from the skull cap worn by monks of the twelfth
and thirteenth centuries. It is usually black. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders;
candidates wear the tassel over the right front quarter.
The Presidential Medallion: In the early 1980’s, a Mansfield State College Commencement
Committee enlisted the expertise of two faculty members to design a presidential medallion and neckpiece in
honor of the institution’s designation effective July 1, 1983 as Mansfield University. Mr. Thomas H. Loomis,
a faculty member in the Art Department, designed and fashioned the metal portion of the medallion using
the Pennsylvania State seal as a base. Mrs. Mary Lee Trowbridge, a faculty member in the Home Economics
Department, designed the neckpiece in red velvet with black stitching. The gold color base of the medallion,
together with the neckpiece highlighting the institutional colors of red and black, symbolize the proud
traditions of the university.

received for their futures.
Parents, family and members of the Class of 2013 who contributed to the Class Gift are listed below
with a message of thanks to those who helped and supported them while they were students. A special
thank you is extended to those classmates who spent hours volunteering their time and service to this
