By the time you read this report Labor Day has passed and summer is drawing to a close. Thinking back, I can’t help but wonder where the summer went. It appears to me this was the summer that never really was. Hardly any hours were put on the boat, the Jet skis or the paddleboards and the Hobie Cat never left the dock. Enough of that, the times we were able to spend on the lake was very enjoyable and I must say Kudos to our lake weed control staff of Linda Tucker and Lynn Leipold for what I believe was the best lake quality since we have been here and that goes back to 1998. The weeds were at all-time lows and the clarity was exceptional. Thank you again. We had our Board of Directors budget meeting in late August and things are looking very good for 2015. For our large expense items (lawn care, lake treatment, etc.), we are in year 2 of 3 of our contracts and look forward to next year and working on new 3 year deals with our vendors. Several projects were completed this year and we still have a few left to do on the Islands with some sinkhole repair as well as some cap board replacement which by this time should be completed. There is good news on the Kendall Park Project as we have a completion date scheduled for October 1, 2014, with a potential grand opening slated to coincide with this year’s Halloween party. The boat launch remodel project is still in the suggested design stages and in process of architectural renderings to be presented later in the year to the general membership. You will also find a proposal for a water ski course and the formation of a Lake Sherwood ski club that is being proposed by one of our own avid skiers. We have had quite an increase in both anonymous and direct complaints regarding potential deed restriction and Bylaw violations. These are mostly in the area concerning trailer storage, trash can storage, parking of commercial vehicles and other items being stored or located on residential property within LSA. Inside this newsletter you will find an article written by Kathy Sawicki that reiterates the deed restrictions and Bylaws governing these items. I encourage all of you to read it and familiarize yourself with the rules. Please keep in mind these rules are to keep the neighborhood looking good while maintaining property values through a tidy appearance. We should all be proud to drive through the sub and see wellmanicured and properly maintained homes as well as properly indoor stored items such as trailers, campers, motor homes, commercial vehicles, etc. At the budget meeting it was also brought up that early on we had 33 residents delinquent on their dues one year and more. LSA sent letters to all and we still have 15 residents that have not paid for one year and more. I would encourage everyone to please pay your dues on time. As you are aware, the dues pay the bills and without them we cannot operate. It is due to our many volunteers and their countless hours of work that help keep our dues at the low rate being charged. I look forward to seeing all of you at the general membership meeting in October and, as always, please don’t hesitate to call or email with any questions you may have. Certain areas are over budget, but there were some expenses that were necessary for safety and overall appearance reasons. ** 2015 Budget Notes: - Similar to previous years, the 2015 Budget column shows a Budgeted Loss. The Board tries to anticipate all ongoing and new project costs when preparing the budget, and the good news is that historically, we have come in below these budgeted expenses. However, IF EVERY LSA member paid their Dues we would basically break even. PLEASE pay your dues early in 2015! - Even with this budgeted loss, the Board feels we can support this shortfall with Savings if we do spend the full budgeted amount. With that said, we recommend keeping the Dues at the same amount as last year - $285 per lot. Dues have NOT increased - As can be seen by the 2014 forecast vs. 2014 budget (a POSITIVE variance of about $18,000), the Board will not spend LSA for the 13 previous years, and we feel we can still provide the same quality service as in the past, as well as some new items. money unless it is warranted. Thank you to the Board and Committee Heads for their conscientious efforts to control costs. NEW PROJECTS: Major improvements in Kendall Park are under way, and we are anticipating great results... within budget! - The Boat Ramp Project was budgeted for the 2014 year, but the committee hasn't yet finalized plans. We will reserve the funds budgeted for this project and carry them over for work completion between now and 2015. If you have any questions, they can be answered at the upcoming General Membership meeting, or you can call me. Fall 2014 - 17 www.lake-sherwood.org Fall 2014 - 19 www.lake-sherwood.org Social Events Gloria Hughes UPCOMING EVENTS: Fishing Tournament The Fishing Tournament results will appear in the December issue as this event takes place after the deadline. Children’s Halloween Party Parents and grandparents, please mark your calendar for 2 pm on Sunday, October 19 for the annual LSA Children’s Halloween Party in Kendall Park (Ledgewood at Stumpwood). This much anticipated event, from 2 to 4 pm, will feature games with prizes and conclude with a costume parade. Once again directing this event is Beth Powers of Leafwood Court. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Beth at (248) 302-1875 or email her at bethpowers@yahoo. com. There is a rain date scheduled for Sunday, October 26. Many thanks to ReMax Classic Realtor Susan McFarland for generously sponsoring this event. All residents are encouraged to attend the Grand Opening of the newly revamped Kendall Park at 1:30 pm on Sunday, October 19, prior to the start of the Halloween Party. Visit the new play structure and the picnic pavilion. LSA Adult Holiday Party-cancelled Outdoor Holiday Lighting Contest While we agree that his event is months away, we need to remember that last year’s tremendous snowstorms prevented many residents from finalizing their outdoor light display. This year judges will scout the neighborhood for first, second and thirdplace winners between the hours of 7 to 10 pm, on Thursday, December 18. Gift baskets and temporary lawn ornamentation will be awarded before 11 pm on that evening. - 22 - Fall 2014 UPDATE: Adult Island Party This year the Adult Island Party in August featured a disc jockey. The event was attended by approximately 320 and the lucky winner of the 50-50 ticket holder took home $220. A big thanks to Dave and Katie Katzman of Windwood Court for organizing this event. Music on the Lake (Fourth of July weekend). While enjoying the easy listening sounds of LSA resident Tom Zakarian and his band Memory Loss, the audience of listeners floated or moored their boat and turned the main lake into an aquatic playground filled with many spectacular inflatables. Kicking off the second session was LSA resident and middle schooler Melody Kondoff, whose patriotic song brought loud cheers throughout the lake. This event would not take place without the generous sponsorship from Milford House Grill/Perriez Take-Out. Should you dine in the restaurant, be sure to spread of word of “thanks”! Night of Lights Boat Parade (Fourth of July weekend) Unanimously Lake Sherwood viewers of the 2014 Night of Lights Boat Parade raved this year to be the most spectacular! With over 22 boats, many featured multicolored LED lights. The attention to detail was outstanding! Thanks to all who participated in making this such a beautiful event. Important to note: Many positive calls were received from viewers who were thrilled that the leader of the boat parade chose to tour the bays throughout Lake Sherwood. Fourth of July Firework Display Another successful firework display was enjoyed by residents on Friday, July 4th. Thanks to all boaters who followed the set back provisions. July 4th weekend’s LSA 2014 Music on the Lake featured live music from Tom Zakarian’s band Memory Loss with an added feature of a patriotic selection by Melody Kondoff. This event was sponsored by Milford Grill/Perriez takeout. Fall 2014 - 23 www.lake-sherwood.org Snow Season During excessive snow the LSA board reminds Lake Sherwood residents to contact the Oakland County Road Commission to request removal in the event of a snow emergency. Call the OCRC at (877) 858-4804 (between 7:30am-4:15pm) (248) 858-4895 (after hours). Food for thought: the squeaky wheel gets oiled. When the snow accumulates to 5 inches, the first 20 feet at each sign entrance will be plowed by a private contractor. Store enclosed and hidden from view A number of members are storing the brown, wheeled Republic Waste dumpsters and other trash containers outside in view of the street and/or their neighbors’ property. Lake Sherwood’s Deed Restrictions require outdoor trash cans and other garbage collection containers to be stored so that they are “enclosed and hidden from view.” (See Section 6 of the Deed Restrictions.) Please be considerate of your neighbors and respect the Association’s rules. Store your Republic trash containers (and any other trash containers, such as garden waste bags and cans) in your garage or behind a hedge, shrubs or other LSA permitted enclosure where they will be hidden from view between trash collection days. Also, remember that Commerce Township requires you to remove and store your trash containers promptly on trash collection day after they have been emptied. All members are expected to comply with the standards in LSA’s Bylaws and Deed Restrictions. Adherence to our Bylaws and Deed Restrictions is vital to maintaining property values for all Lake Sherwood members. Parking & Storing Trailers and Vehicles There has been a definite uptick in complaints about members improperly storing trailers, commercial vehicles, and cars compared to prior years. Our bylaws are clear that boat and snowmobile trailers are to be stored in compliance with current township rules and regulations, and RV’s, campers, travel trailers and all other trailers are to be stored / housed within a garage (see Bylaw Section 10.05, b.). Commercial vehicles owned by members must also be stored/housed within a garage, pursuant to Deed Restriction Section 2.d. Lake Sherwood Association does not permit any commercial vehicle, RV, travel trailer or other type of trailer to be stored outside of a garage—boat and snowmobile trailers are the only exceptions to this rule! Of course, most residents do not have the current township rules at their fingertips. Zoning Ordinance Section 3.000, governing storage of boats, trailers, automobiles, etc., can be found at www.commercetwp.com at the bottom of the “Quick Links” located on the left side of the home page. In a nutshell, under the township rules, a boat is allowed to be stored on a trailer in your driveway from May 1, to October 31. If your boat is not on the trailer, the trailer should be stored in your side yard or back yard. If you are a lake or waterfront property, they are to be stored on the side yard. Snowmobile trailers should be stored the same as boat trailers without boats. Automobiles stored in your driveway must be currently registered, operating and in regular use. That’s it, fairly simple. Go to www.lake-sherwood.org and click on the Bylaws and Deed Restrictions tabs on the Home page to review Section 10.05, b of the bylaws and Section 2.d of the deed restrictions. Please, be a good neighbor and a good citizen. Follow the rules when you store your trailers and vehicles. I have since found out that the Association pays for clean-up and reported the mess. Even after I told Mike, he is still doing a weekly check/clean up. I am very impressed with Mike! Thanks Mike! The idea is finding some members to monitor the 3 main lake islands with docks, making sure the docks and sea walls are in good shape. If repairs require professional work, those recommendations and plans should be sent back to current BOD for budget approval. Light island repairs would include, island dock boards, clamps, vertical poles and joining knuckles. The Association will supply or pay for parts and members will provide the work. Also some sea wall repairs like cap boards and bumper boards. We also need to replace some of the park style BBQs. Again LSA will buy the materials and members will supply the work. Harry Tucker This is my last report as President for the View; and in retrospect of the past two years as President I review some of LSA accomplishments during that time. It was exciting as well as rewarding to be a part of all the improvements, both administrative processes such as revising the way we do our contracts, to projects being started by new ad hoc committees, especially our new Kendall Park Project. And no dues increase. Our wealth of volunteers from the board of directors, area representatives and committees people, all-make things happen at no cost or little cost to LSA, giving our association the best reputation that even our township supervisor recognizes and uses us as a gold standard for other associations. Speaking of volunteers, I would like to congratulate both Brian Hollis and Tracy Golles for joining the board as Area Reps. This will allow them to actually see the behind-the-scene activity that run the association and find their ‘niche’ in helping it happen. It won’t take long before one can see something they can do and also fit into their busy schedule and help the many processes that make up our management team. The bonus? You meet new neighbors you lived with for years and never met. Yes, the BOD and committee head group is one of the biggest social groups on the lake, some are very active, some only have time for one event a year; it is a very diversified group. Michigan winters may encourage people staying snug in the warmth of their homes, but the real adventure is outside, especially when the lake and canals freeze over and offer a ray of winter sports. We are all so lucky to have access to winter activities right out our backdoors. Enjoy but be safe. As a last note, again I would like to thank everyone that stepped up, advised and directed all that we call Lake Sherwood Association. The one-time equipment cost is included in the 2015 budget proposal. Attend the October GMM to learn more about this added LSA amenity. Background: Lake Sherwood has a strong community of water sports enthusiasts who regularly use the lake for their personal enjoyment and bonding with their friends and neighbors. A watersports club can help strengthen that community and introduce new participants to the sports. As a lake community, we should promote the active usage of our beautiful natural resource. Club Activities: Initially the existing water skiers would investigate the repair, refurbishment and/or replacement of the existing water ski course on the lake. Participants would be trained in the operation and maintenance of the course before having access for use. Set hours of use would be established and maintained, so as to not interfere with the lake use for others during high traffic times. Course would include a “beginner course” to help all get familiar with skiing a course. Goals would include “learn to ski/wakeboard” days intended to introduce other lake residents and children to the various watersports being enjoyed out on Lake Sherwood. Investigation of possible “clinics” providing professional skiers or wakeboarders could be investigated. Any cost of these would be paid by the participants. Cost: Budget proposal is asking the association to fund an initial investment of up to $4,500 for the repair, refurbishment, and/or replacement of the existing ski course equipment. No ongoing funding is being asked for. Ongoing maintenance will be provided by the LSA Watersports Club members through minimal membership fees and/or sponsorship and fundraising efforts. System: The course being used is a submersible system that allows the course buoys to be set under water when not in use and eliminates any navigational problems. Set-up/maintenance: All work to be done by volunteers from the Lake Sherwood Watersports Club. Course operation: A remote pump will be used to raise/lower the course. The pump will be located on or near property on Driftwood Dr. Several people have offered use of the shore or lakefront in front of their house on Driftwood for this purpose. Most ski clubs have gone to a 12V pump that would be plugged into the skier’s boat to gain power. A lockbox could be used, with a combination made available to club members after they’ve received training on usage of the course. Please contact Ken Younker at [email protected] to express interest and/or concerns with this proposal. We’d like to get an indication of the level of interest prior to the fall Association meeting. - 42 - Fall 2014 Special thanks to Milford House Grill for again generously sponsoring this year’s Music on the Lake entertainment event! Re-Vamp the Ramp – Tracy Golles The committee to update the landscaping at the boat ramp is still working to narrow down the desired design elements. At this time our target budget is $10,000 or less but approval from the general membership is required for the project to go forward. Design element alternatives under consideration include brick paver walkways, building a gazebo, incorporating the stones like the ones used in the entrance signs, a new shade tree, and whether or not to update the sign to name a few. We value everyone’s input and would like to hear your ideas. Please look for email notices of upcoming meetings and plan to attend. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 pm , Kendall Park ( rain date: Sunday, October 26) Join us from 2 to 4-ish in Kendall Park (Ledgewood at Stumpwood) for a Halloween celebration filled with games, prizes, snacks & costume parade. Generously sponsored by LSA neighbor & ReMax Classic Realtor Susan McFarland Concluding the event is the Costume Parade. Prizes will be awarded for various categories for 1st, 2nd & 3rd - place winners. Organizing this year’s event is Beth Powers of Leafwood Court. Volunteers are needed! Contact Beth: (248)302-1875 or email at [email protected] Fall 2014 - 47 www.lake-sherwood.org Cattails Residents can cut back cattails where they are invasive. It is most effective to cut them back in the fall. The stems of the cattails are hollow, if the cattail is cut back in the fall, as low as possible, the stems will fill with water and freeze, which can kill the cattail (but there is no guarantee - they are a very resilient plant). It should be noted that residents SHOULD NOT try to treat the cattails chemically themselves. If individual residents are found treating without being licensed and without a permit there are huge fines and can potentially jeopardize the rest of the lake from being treated. FALL CHECK LIST (1) Check watercraft still in water for weeds near engine compartment where muskrats tend to feed and damage wiring harnesses. Remove weeds and place wire mesh over area to prevent damage. (2) When blowing out sprinkler systems, use RV antifreeze where lines may have low spots. (3) Pull in lifts, docks, rafts from water to ensure no damage from spring ice shifts, especially on main lake where ice shifts do more damage. (4) Change oil for 4-cycle engines; add fuel stabilizer to gas tanks; fog engine to keep cylinder bores from rusting. (5) Put all outside furniture in boat; hang de-con/anti-mildew bag from steering wheel before shrink wrapping to prevent mold build up; hang mothball bags to deter animals. (6) Use a “battery minder” (a charger with a smart chip) to keep batteries charged (pontoon, ski boat, PWC, and lawn tractor). (7) Septic system; feed entire system a biological drain cleaner. (8) Check to see if any trees need to be trimmed for winter season. (9) Attend NO-HAZ drop off site to disposal of household batteries, pesticides, oil filters, bleach, cleaners, etc. Fall 2014 - 49 www.lake-sherwood.org
