UNIQUE!! LA BANQUE JACQUES CARTIER $10 1889 ISSUED NOTE
THE CANADIAN BANK
OF COMMERCE
1917 $20
UNIQUE! The only issued example
known. In fact, this type is so rare
that it is even lacking in the official
Bank of Canada collection. The specimen we’ll be offering here has been
graded PMG Very Fine 25. Its existence represents a true miracle of
survival.
As Auctionneers and Numismatic
enthusiasts we are always in the
search for a diamond in the rough,
well we just found one. A particularly
bright, full coloured and possibly
unique 1889 $10 La Banque Jacques
Cartier has found its way onto the
Canadian Market. According to The
National Currency Collection, Bank of Canada, the only example known to exist of this date and denomination belongs to the Bank of
Canada and is a Remainder issue which does not consist of serial numbers and/or countersignatures and thus to be considered as a none
issue type. This extraordinary issue has a serial #A53681 and bears two signatures and according to the Bank of Canada to be considered
the only issued note known to exist to date.
The issue comes with a particular historical background. The note was found several years ago in a wooden box located in the office
of an old time Notary Agent. Inside were documents related to an old contract that was issued at the time at a cost of $12. To cover the
cost, inside the box was a 1917 $1, 1923 $1 and this 1889 $10 issue. The contract and payment remained hidden in this box until discovered
and purchased by the consignor several years back. The note was then presented and put up for Auction in May of 1998 by Montreal Coin
& Stamps and was estimated at $10,000 and sold for $44,000 approx. It is only recently, in 2008 that the Bank of Canada officially recognized the rarity and possible uniqueness of this exceptional piece.
A piece of Canadian History that should definitely attract many viewers and bidders alike. This example shows a superb design, with
front of note portraying Indians on a bluff and Steam Passenger Train below, J. Cartier portrait at left and building facade at right. Shows
all of its bright yellow, blue and black colors.
La Banque Jacques Cartier opened its door in 1861, and grew in size, as many other Quebec Chartered banks did, up until the 1890s.
In the mid 1890s, the economy of Quebec contracted, as it did through much of Canada and the United States. This created a wave of
financial problems, resulting in bank failures. As many of these banks were interconnected through joint financing of various companies,
and projects, the failure of one caused problems with the cash flow of another. The first major failure was La Banque du Peuple, in 1895.
This failure undermined the confidence in the banking sector through all of Quebec. The failure of La Banque Jacques Cartier was soon
to follow. The bank failed in 1899, but was reorganized in 1900, and became La Banque Provinciale du Canada, one of our largest chartered
banks still in existence. This makes all banknotes of La Banque Jacques Cartier still redeemable. Only $4,108.50 worth of notes still remain
outstanding, but this is probably overstated, as many 19th century notes have been lost, or destroyed.
All notes of La Banque Jacques Cartier are rare. The only note which surfaces with any regularity is the one dollar note of 1852. Even
this note, of which there are possibly ten pieces known, sells for several thousands of dollars in VG or Fine condition. All other later issues
are known only as Proofs, and start at $4,000 in VG.
Only once in a lifetime that you have the opportunity to purchase a Canadian rarity. This note is a choice example, with bright colours,
and full detail. We are proud to offer this note, and know you will be proud to have it in your collection.
Our best guess here is that this “Jacques Cartier” note will bring a solid five figure price, but if two or more determined bidders decide
they have to own it, our estimate will likely be conservative in the extreme.

2.
All lots shall be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer. If any dispute arises during the sale, the auctioneer has the right to reopen the lot and put
it up for sale again. The auctioneer’s decision will be final. In the case of identical (tied) bids during our Live Auctions, the earliest received bid shall take priority. In
the case of a tie bid during our Sales, between a mail/fax bid and an Internet bid, the Internet bid will take precedence and obtain the lot. PLEASE CONTACT US
IF YOU REQUIRE FURTHER EXPLANATION. No BUY bids or unlimited bids will be accepted. Bids may be made by mail, fax, email, phone or place your bids
on our website, either before the sale or by bidding online during the sessions. If you have yet to do so, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our new Internet
bidding platform program, an improved online bidding experience which allows bidders to watch and participate in the auction in real time through a live feed.
3.
A 15% buyer’s fee will be added to the invoice of each successful bidder, including mail/fax/email bidders and phone bidders. An 18% buyer’s fee is applicable to
all INTERNET bidders. All successful mail/fax/telephone bidders will receive an invoice by mail. All successful internet bidders will receive an invoice by e-mail.
4.
Prices realized will be published and posted on our website a few days after the sale. Prices realized may be mailed upon request.

6.
The auctioneer will open the bidding at the higher of approximately 10% above the second highest bid received or the consignor’s reserve. All bids received will be
reduced whenever possible. So, don’t be afraid to bid high. If there are no bids received or reserve, the auctioneer will open bidding at about 50% of the estimate or
at the starting bid indicated with the price in RED, bracketed right before the catalogue value. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot for any reason at
any time prior to its sale. In a case of a significant event which, in the judgement of the auctioneer reserves the right to cancel or postpone this sale.
7.
Prices are in Canadian funds. Bidding in this auction will be in Canadian funds. Mail bids received from USA customers will be converted at the exchange rates of
the sale’s date rate.
8.
The estimates listed are taken from the Canadian Coin News, Charlton catalogues, Canadian Dealers News letter and retail prices, e-bay sales, Cornwell re- port
and/or the actual market selling/ asking prices. Key dates and Highest grade material will generally command a premium and should sell close to and/ or above the
estimates. Our estimates are fair and very reasonable, please bid accordingly. No lot should sell less than 50% of the estimates. With a bid of 80% of the estimate,
you have a fair chance of succeeding, with a bid of 100% of the highest estimate, you will be likely to succeed.
9.
The cataloguer has taken every reasonable measure to ensure that all of the lots in this sale are as described and genuine. All raw coins and banknotes have been
graded by the cataloguer or the auction house which represent our best professional opinion. To grade coins and banknotes, we use Canadian grading standards,
34 years of experience and good conscience. Grading is a subjective description in the opinion of the cataloguer or the auction house. Among experts there are
often differences of opinion on the grading and the eye appeal of a coin. The strike and the state of preservation are often debated. TCNC acts as an agent between
consignors and buyers. TCNC does not guarantee that any coin or banknote catalogued will meet the standards, or the grade, of any third party grading companies.
No warranty, whether impressed or implied.
10.
Title to all lots remains with the auction house until paid for in full by the purchaser. But they are held at the risk of the purchaser once the time of the sale.
11.
All lots delivered outside Canada are exempt of tax. Sales tax, if applicable will be added to the total amount of each invoice including the buyer’s charge. To all lots
delivered in Canada, appropriate GST/HST will be charged. To all lots delivered in Quebec PST of 9.975% will be charged. To all lots delivered in USA or overseas,
NO TAX will be charged.
12.
Shipping and insurance will be charged to all successful bidders. Insurance will be charged at 0.0040% ($0.40 for $100 purchase). If declined, parcel will be sent at
buyer’s risk. All overseas shipments are sent at buyer’s risk.
13.
Mail bidders may return incorrectly described lots for full refund within 5 days of receipt, (except on bulk lots or any lot that contains more than 5 items). NO
RETURNS can be accepted for ANY REASON after April 23, 2014 as consignors must be paid. Sorry, no exceptions.
14.
TCNC acts ONLY as agent for the consignors and makes no independent warranty to title. TCNC hereby disclaims all liability for damages, incidental, consequential
or otherwise, arising out of or in connection with the sale of any property by TCNC to the purchaser. TCNC reminds all bidders that grading, attribution, and method
of manufacture are crucial to the determination of the value of any numismatic item.
