Exploring mountains with winter traction is a nice way to break off on your own, or
have the whole family join you. We lead a series of natural history walks that utilize
snowshoes and explore the many snowshoe trails at WG.
Snowshoes
We are located at an abandoned alpine ski area and run by a group of backcountry
telemark skiers. Hundreds of hours, mostly from volunteers, are spent each year
nipping the NATO Breakfast Bowl, Cathedral Glades, and the Jack Frost woods. Always
improving, never done, new glades every year.
Telemark Glades
We have developed a system of snow fences combined with grooming that catches
windblown snow along a 5 km series of trails and slopes. It’s 245 foot vertical provides
plenty of challenge.
Snowfarming
30 km of trail are regularly groomed for both classic and freestyle skiing. We also groom
slopes for Nordic downhill. A fleet of modern 4 stroke snowmobiles and a Pisten Bulley
snowcat do much of the work. Most of our groomers are from Yellowstone Tracking
Systems, the world’s best.

Canaan’s high altitude and moist climate create a unique
ecosystem with plants, animals and weather usually found much
further north. We welcome our neighbors, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and wish them success in their efforts to protect
this valuable resource. Please obey their rules and skiing off trail
is prohibited on their property. Call: 304-866-3858.

SKATING • XC DOWNHILL • KICK N GLIDE
HOW TO STOP...
Don’t pick up too much speed for starters, balance on both feet,
relax somewhat bending your ankles and knees. Have heavy feet,
push them thru to China. Spread skis out to form a snowplow wedge,
keep your back fairly straight and place your weight evenly over
your whole foot and avoid over edging. Ease into it and remain well
flexed while keeping your arms down and in close...Use your poles
as brakes, try step turns, or simply place your rear end easily into the
snow between your skis as a brake. Replace your sitzmark and sign
up for a lesson and practice!
White Grass is situated on over 2,500 acres of private, state, and federal
lands within the Cabin Mtn. range of West Virginia’s high Alleghenies. We
pick up much of our snow off the Great Lakes whenever strong northwesterly winds drop out of Canada. Originally built as the Weiss Knob Ski
Area in 1959, Bob and Anita Barton operated 4 rope tows and had snow
making here. The Randall Reed family owns much of the property we ski
upon and we thank them for allowing us to do so. Enjoy your skiing in Canaan
Valley. CHIP, LAURIE AND ALL THE STAFF.
