You have achieved an important milestone in your life and I am proud of each

I encourage you to step out into the world with the knowledge and skill you
have acquired at VIU and make it a better place. You represent the very best of
what we do at Vancouver Island University. Education is the foundation that
brings about personal development and growth within people and is the key to
healthy economies and community sustainability.
VIU is an organization that is focused on the success of students and
communities. It is this strong sense of purpose that will continue to guide our
decision making and shape the direction of VIU for many decades.
To the learners and the communities that continue to support the efforts of
Vancouver Island University, thank you. You are the truest measure of our
success. We exist to serve and support you, and look forward to continuing to do
so well into the future.
I would like to congratulate Dr. Ralph Nilson and Board Chair Mike Brown for
their vision and leadership. Together with the dynamic team of professionals
working at VIU, our university is undertaking remarkable work in research,
program development, economic and social development, Aboriginal
engagement and cultural enrichment. I believe that these are the critical
elements that will shape the coastal communities of Vancouver Island well into
the future.

allow you to succeed and move forward with confidence.

Born and trained in BC,
Chef Bernard’s cooking
career began with
encouragement from his
grandmother. She instilled
a strong work ethic in the
young chef, along with
the passion for respecting
food and the people who
produce it.
Chef Bernard completed
the Culinary Arts Program
at Malaspina College in
1976, and at graduation
was recognized as the most
outstanding student in the
program. He received his
Certified chef de Cuisine
certification in 1986, one of the inaugural chefs in Canada
to complete the exam. Among his culinary achievements,
Chef Bernard is a founding board member of Exclusively
BC, and charter member of Farm Folk, City Folk, further
demonstrating his commitment to eating locally grown
food and working the area farmers and producers to
present simple honest food.
He is a former board member of the Provincial BC
Restaurant and Food Association and now sits as Director
of BC Culinary Tourism Society that promotes true dining
experiences in the province.
Prior to joining Manteo Resort Waterfront Hotel and Villas
as Executive Chef, he worked as Executive Sous Chef at the
Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver, Opening Executive Chef
at the Chateau Whistler Resort, and with his wife Bonnie,
owned and operated his self-titled Chef Bernard’s Café in
Whistler, before arriving in the Okanagan as Executive Chef
of the Sonora Room Restaurant at Burrowing Owl Estate
Winery in 2007.
Although Chef Bernard has cooked for prime ministers and
movie stars, a prince and princess, celebrities and business
tycoons, he feels strongly about mentoring young talent
and inspiring young chefs to fulfill their dreams. He shares
his love of fresh, locally rooted cuisine and takes great pride
in seeing his protégées thrive under his leadership. He
continues his commitment to the growth and flourishment
of the next generation of great chefs as Judge for the BC
Apprenticeship Trade Certification exams.

– Dr. Mar s hall Sou le s
Dr. Marshall Soules joined
the Malaspina community
in 1987 as a member of the
English department, and
spent over two decades
sharing his gifts as an
educator with generations
of students. Soules is
known as a professor who
inspires his students to
stretch their imaginations
and their critical faculties.
Soules is often described
as a true renaissance man. In addition to over 20 academic
publications and countless public presentations, his art and
photography have appeared on display and in publications
across Canada and the U.S., and his music and writings
about music are respected by jazz theorists and musicians
across the country.

In 1994, Soules completed his Ph.D. at Rutgers on the theme
of improvisation in the arts. After completing his Ph.D.
work, Soules is best known for his role in founding VIU’s
thriving Media Studies department, which now offers both
a Minor degree in Media Studies and a BA major in Digital
Media Studies. It’s an innovative blended degree that offers
students a balance between media critique and media
production skills.

In addition to chairing the Media Studies Department
from 1998 to 2008, Marshall became director of the Media
Research Lab in 2003, where he and research assistants
supported faculty work in the digital humanities, produced
conferences on filmmaking, art exhibits, and workshops at
the University of Victoria.
Edwin Johnston In 2007, Marshall was awarded a Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council grant for the Canada-Cuba
Image Dialogue project, which he continues to develop
with colleagues in Cuba.
Dr. Aaron R. Jex Soules retired from VIU in 2009 after 22 years of service. He
is currently writing a book for Edinburgh University Press
called Media, Persuasion, and Propaganda, working on
photography projects, doing community development
work in Ladysmith, and enjoying time spent with his wife
Donna, daughter and granddaughter.

Regalia
Like most universities in North America, the regalia worn by
Vancouver Island University’s degree students is unique to
the university and representative of their area of study. While
the styles of the gowns worn by each degree credential are
similar, the Bachelor’s gown has closed sleeves and the Master’s
gown has open sleeves. The degree hood’s colour indicates
the graduate’s program or area of study. The Bachelor’s degree
hood is edged in white and the Master’s degree hood is lined
in grey. The Master of Business Administration degree hood is
similar to the one used by the University of Hertfordshire in the
United Kingdom, with whom VIU originally offered its first MBA
programs.
Vancouver Island University has selected the following colours
for their degree hoods:

Pad d le
The paddle that is on display during VIU’s convocation
ceremonies was given to the university by Chief Shawn A-inchut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor. This paddle,
made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/
Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies
teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved
onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place
where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much
in the same way that youth earn an education and then
return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their
communities. A paddle was presented to each of the four
regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special
occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the
Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us
in our important journeys. It has since become an important
symbol and tradition in our Convocation ceremonies.
M ac e
During the Middle Ages, the metal-clad wooden mace was an
effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms
were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was
transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial
mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as
the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and is carried
before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university ceremonies
such as this.
The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and
created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The
metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated
cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled
medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems. At
the convocation ceremonies, the mace is carried by a retiring
member of academic faculty or administration to honour his or
her contribution to Vancouver Island University.

The heraldic tradition stretches back some eight centuries, to a
time when nobles decorated the shields they used in jousting
matches. Heraldry developed over the next several hundred
years, and control over the granting and
using of arms was assumed by monarchs,
who appointed professionals – known
as heralds – to administer this authority.
Coats of Arms thus developed as grants
of honour received from a sovereign,
allowing the identification of individuals,
communities and organizations. The
heraldic devices, in which each separate
element has meaning, provide powerful
symbols of history, geography, character
and aspirations.
Canada’s First Nations peoples have employed crests and
emblems for thousands of years. European heraldry began
to play a role in Canada in the earliest days of the French and
English explorers – the first arms, in fact, were granted to Nova
Scotia in 1625 by the Lord Lyon of Scotland. In this century,
immigrants from around the world have brought with them
their own heraldic traditions. These varying traditions are all
now expressed in Canadian heraldry, which has been under
the control of the Governor General of Canada since June, 1988
when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth transferred the exercise of
her heraldic prerogative to her representative in Canada.
The VIU Coat of Arms was granted to the University in 1995 by
the Chief Herald of Canada and consists of five elements: the
shield, crest, supporters, compartment and motto. The Coat
of Arms does not replace the existing University logo; its use is
restricted to official documents such as degree parchments.
M otto
The motto Discoveries in Education was adopted in 1969 when
the institution was inaugurated. These words, together with a
shield depicting a Spanish barque under sail, represented VIU’s
first logo when the institution was known as Malaspina College.
The use of the original motto and the Spanish vessel in the
Coat of Arms provides a permanent link in the official grant to
a symbol and logotype which served Malaspina well during a
key period of its early development. The motto also provides
a link with one of Captain Alejandro Malaspina’s ships – the
Descubierta – which means Discovery.

Sh i e ld
The shield is divided in the upper third by a jagged line with
the part below coloured gold and the part above coloured
blue.
In the lower portion is a representation of a late
18th century Spanish sailing vessel of the
type used by Captain Alejandro Malaspina
who sailed the waters off Vancouver Island
in 1791. The ship is under full sail and rests
on three wavy bars; these, and the ship are
blue in the symbolic fashion of heraldry so that
the element stands out most clearly against
the gold. The vessel recalls the University’s
namesake and honors the tradition of
exploration.
The upper jagged line symbolizes the mountains across
the Strait of Georgia as seen from the main campus. On this
blue field are four open books bound in gold. These represent
the central mission of the University, using the ancient heraldic
symbol for learning. The gold binding symbolizes the wealth
of knowledge and understanding. The four books also
represent the main campus and the three regional campuses of
Vancouver Island University.

Above the shield is the wreath, the traditional foundation for a
crest, in the blue and gold colours. This crest honours the First
Nations peoples, and especially the Salish people who live in
each of the regions now served by the University.
The principal element is a First Nations canoe, in red, evoking
the sea-based culture of the Salish. Out of it rises a gold demisun, emblem of enlightenment, life and the aspiration for
learning.

The supporters are gold eagles with white heads, their wings
are blue and raised up, signifying inspiration and striving. The
eagles are resident in the Central Vancouver Island and Powell
River regions. The eagles are a very important symbol for many
of the First Nations peoples, representing power and wisdom.
C om pa r tm e n t
The compartment on which the shield rests and the supporters
stand consists of three elements. The evergreens and
mountains represent the unique landscape of Vancouver
Island and the adjacent mainland. Beneath the evergreens
are alternating white and blue wavy bars which symbolize the
seaside and riverside locations of the four communities where
the University is sited.

Through our four campuses, over 2,000 employees and
thousands of graduates, Vancouver Island University is a major
economic engine operating in the communities of Vancouver
Island and BC’s Sunshine Coast.
The graduates of VIU’s more than 200 degree, diploma and
certificate programs are shaping our world in extraordinary
ways. Our graduates are also providing the region with a talent
pool of highly trained individuals who are ready to take on the
demands of a new economy.
In addition to providing an annual injection of over 120
million dollars into the local economy through operational
spending, VIU is adding value to communities in the areas of
cultural enrichment, economic development, environmental
sustainability, research opportunities and social development.
C u ltu ral E n r i ch m e nt : VIU is adding a rich and diverse layer
of cultural access to the citizens of our communities through
the many cultural events hosted on each of VIU’s four campuses.
From poetry readings to film festivals, Aboriginal feasts, concerts
and other cultural initiatives, VIU is supporting the development
of arts and culture on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.
In addition to hosting students from more than 60 countries,
VIU is proud to have one of the highest Aboriginal postsecondary participation rates in BC. We value our relationships
with our Aboriginal communities and will continue to engage in
initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal advancement.

exploring new ways of teaching and operating that ensures
the protection of our environment and our communities. VIU
has hired a Manager of Environment and Sustainability to
coordinate its environmental sustainability plan and ensure VIU
meets its greenhouse gas reduction targets.
R e s ear ch O pp ortu n iti e s : VIU averages four postgraduate
scholarships for fourth year students per year. Worth
approximately $19,000 each, these scholarships serve as a
financial boost to help students pursuing Master’s degrees. As
well, VIU’s increased focus on undergraduate research is being
recognized by national funding agencies such as the Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
