WHY PEDAL MINNESOTA?
M
innesotans aren’t ones to brag, but when it comes to
our biking scene, we take great pride in having some
of the best biking trails in the country. Not only do we
have more than 4,000 miles of paved trails, but this extensive
network encompasses a variety of terrain, including scenic lake
loops, leisurely city rides, peaceful trails along country roads,
shaded routes on paved paths, journeys near rivers and through
the woods, and invigorating white-knuckle mountain biking.
We have a Nice Ride bike-sharing program in multiple cities, bike
tune-up stations on several trails, and places to mountain bike in
the middle of winter. We have charitable bike races, serious bike
races and races just for the fun of it. We even have more than a
dozen communities and counting designated as “Bicycle Friendly.”
Minnesota is a biker’s paradise, and the goal of Pedal Minnesota
is to serve as a go-to resource for all things biking in the state, and
to help inspire people to get outside and ride (regardless of whether
you last went biking last week, last year or two decades ago). Don’t
let spandex-wearing cyclists intimidate you! Biking is for everyone.
For mapping tools, lists of biking events and clubs, safety tips and
personal trip ideas from local bike ambassadors, visit pedalmn.com.

As you read this guide, please note that certain trail “extras” are highlighted with these icons:
WINTER FAT-TIRE BIKING
Wide rims and huge wheels with giant treads
can conquer almost any terrain—even snowand ice-covered Minnesota landscapes. More
bikers are experiencing the thrill of “fat-tire”
or “fat” biking in winter, available in certain locations,
designated with these icons. (While groomed snowmobile
and ski trails may look appealing to those interested in fat
biking, many of these trails aren’t open to other uses.) For
up-to-date information on where to ride fat bikes on state
trails and in state parks/recreation areas, visit
mndnr.gov/fatbike.
TUNE-UP
STATIONS
Pedal Minnesota has
brought permanent
bicycle tune-up
stations, 10 of which are sponsored
by HealthPartners, to some of
the most widely used trails in the
state. Each station offers free
tools and an air compressor tire
pump for easy (and convenient)
maintenance.
BICYCLE FRIENDLY
COMMUNITIES
These Minnesota communities
saw the value in becoming
more bike-friendly places to live
and received national recognition from the
League of American Bicyclists’ as being Bicycle
Friendly Communities. Trails with this icon
connect to one or more of these communities.
See page 24 for information about what it
takes for communities to earn this designation
and create a bicycling culture.

Pedal along hundreds of paved bike
trails throughout Minnesota. We have
everything from easy, gentle grades
to heart-pumping climbs; trails
meandering through the countryside,
into charming small towns and in
the heart of the big, bustling city. We
have scenic trails near lakes, following
river bluffs and in the heart of forests.
Many trails connect to others, offering
a unique way to explore the state.
Distance: 18 paved miles (connecting to the
42-mile Root River State Trail)
This area lives up to its “Bluff Country”
nickname with wooded, rolling countryside,
winding rivers and charming little towns.
Unlike trail sections that follow old railroad
routes, the path between Harmony and
Preston zips up and down steep hills. There’s
a mix of woods and fields and attractions—
like a toy museum, goat farm and shops carrying Amish handcrafts—along the way.
For more info: 507-285-7176;
mndnr.gov/trails. Map online.
Red Jacket Trail
the mostly flat trail features rest stops from
which to appreciate the scenic views. (The
grade is never very steep, the trail is mostly
shaded and there are very few crossings.)
Start your ride in Cannon Falls, Red Wing or
Welch and experience Minnesota smalltown hospitality at its best.
Trail fee: $4 daily wheel pass for 18 and over;
$25 for a season.

Casey Jones State Trail
Location: Currie and Pipestone
Distance: Three main unconnected sections;
13 miles between Pipestone and Woodstock
(5 paved miles), a 1.5-mile naturally surfaced
segment into the city of Lake Wilson and a
6-mile paved loop into the city of Currie
One of the first state trails authorized by
Minnesota in the ’60s, the Casey Jones State
Trail—named after a famed railroad engineer—goes past the countryside as it links
Lake Shetek State Park with Currie, home to
the End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum.

Douglas State Trail
Location: Between Rochester and Pine Island
Distance: 13 paved miles
Shaded by a canopy of trees, this trail travels past rolling farmland and rural scenery.
Several bridges cross the Zumbro River, the
northernmost crossing providing entry into
Pine Island park (complete with a playground and picnic shelter) and connecting to
Main Street, where many downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic
Places. The southern end of the trail links to
the extensive bikeways system in Rochester,
home of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.

Goodhue Pioneer
State Trail
Location: Between Red Wing and Zumbrota
Distance: 9 paved miles
It’s not unusual to see wild turkeys, partridges, fox and pheasants as you pass through
a scenic mix of tallgrass prairies, maple and
basswood forests, and oak savanna.

mndnr.gov/trails. Map online.
Great River Ridge
State Trail
Location: Between Plainview and near
Eyota, northeast of Rochester
Distance: 13 paved miles
Built on a former railroad grade, the Great
River Ridge State Trail is a fairly easy ride
(even recommended for kids), becoming
gradually more hilly at Elgin. See wild turkeys, prairie flowers, and cross a 100-yearold trestle.

Harmony-Preston
Valley State Trail
Location: Between Harmony and Preston,
southeast of Rochester
Location: Between Mankato and Rapidan
Distance: 6 miles of paved trails; connecting
with other trails
Two small parks lie along the short, scenic
Red Jacket Trail: Weagel Park, one mile
south of Mankato; and Red Jacket Trail
Park, at the Le Sueur River, with parking at
both locations. The trail itself passes Mount
Kato ski area and mountain bike park before
traveling along a wooded, secluded hillside
over railroad trestles, past rural scenery and
into the village of Rapidan.

Root River State Trail
Location: From Fountain east through
Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford
and Houston
Distance: 42 paved miles, connecting to the
18-mile Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail
The Root River State Trail has a reputation as the “Cadillac of Trails,” with beautiful scenery (limestone cliffs, pastures, fields
of wildflowers, wooden bridges, a river,
wildlife) and plenty of small-town attractions. It doesn’t follow an old railroad track
and it’s not flat (adding to the adventure).
Lanesboro attracts thousands of bikers
every year.

Grand Rapids to Highway 135 just beyond Giants Ridge in Biwabik—about 85 miles. Other
pieces include spurs and portions around
Grand Rapids, Chisholm, Eveleth, Aurora,
Tower/Soudan and Ely. When completed, the
Mesabi Trail will stretch from the Mississippi
River to the BWCAW, from Grand Rapids to
What kind of bike do you have?
I have a robin’s egg blue Bianchi and
a beautiful vintage red Schwinn
beach cruiser.
What advice do you have for someone
who hasn’t biked in a long time but
wants to get back out there again?
I think a lot of people who haven’t biked
in years are intimidated by the sport.
Perhaps start with a few cycling classes
to get used to the posture and positioning. When you’re ready to bike outside,
try an easy trail. We are really fortunate
to live in such a bike-friendly community—one of the best in the country—so
your opportunities are endless once you
get more comfortable.
What’s your favorite place in
Minnesota to ride your bike? Why?
The Chain of Lakes in South Minneapolis—the trails are flat and really beautiful
in the summertime, and you’re not dealing with a whole lot of car traffic—or
along the Mississippi River, especially in
the fall when the colors are changing.
I’ve also been biking in Lanesboro, a
charming little town in southern Minnesota with some great bike trails. Nothing
like enjoying a cold beer at a small-town
restaurant after a day on the trails!
What’s been a favorite cycling moment?
My most memorable biking experience
was competing in the Iron Girl duathlon in 2012. It’s a womens-only race in
Bloomington—a 2-mile run, followed by
a 22-mile bike ride, then another 2-mile
run. All of the women were so supportive, cheering each other on. The energy
was amazing!

Rider Spotlight
Steven Kime, Austin
What kind of bike do you have?
Trek 400. It’s an older road bike that I modified with straight bars. I love to ride that
bike. I must confess that I have my eye on a
new Trek FX for the coming season. I stop in
the bike shop often to visit and make sure
that it is still there “waiting for me.”
Where’s your favorite place
to buy bike gear/products?
Rydjor Bike Shop in Austin. (They also have
a museum of bicycles on display.)
What’s the longest ride
you’ve taken on your bike?
Probably nothing to really brag about, but
I did ride 70 miles one day, an accomplishment for me.
What advice do you have for someone
who hasn’t biked in a long time but
wants to get back out there again?
Start out slow with some short distance
rides. Build endurance to complete longer
rides as you progress. Riding with a group
or partner is also motivating and fun.
Pedal across
northern
Minnesota.
What’s your favorite place in
Minnesota to ride your bike? Why?
I really enjoy riding on the state bicycle
trails: Shooting Star, Root River, Cannon Valley, Paul Bunyan, Heartland, Cuyuna Lakes,
Blazing Star and Gitchi-Gami. I also enjoy
riding our local city of Austin trail system.
I am proud to say that we have 14 miles of
trails in our city with future plans for more. I
most enjoy my daily rides around Austin on
our city trails and county roads (with wide
shoulders).
What’s been a favorite cycling moment?
Finally reaching the end of a long climb and
beginning the coast back downhill, feeling
the sunshine and wind on my face as I ride
on a warm summer day, the exhilaration
after a short sprint, the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction upon arriving
back home after a ride. These are some of
the moments that I remember through a
cold winter with the anticipation of spring
and getting back outside to ride.

Mississippi to the Boundary Waters

through 28 communities.

ON-ROAD TOURING
O N ROA D TOUR I NG
The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) experience begins in Minnesota at Itasca State Park—
the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi—and brings riders on a memorable adventure
along America’s iconic waterway, winding downriver over 600 miles to the state border.
Portions of the route follow low-traffic city streets or paved mixed-use paths, including an
alternate route between Cass Lake and Crow Wing State Park near Brainerd, where it travels
nearly 100 miles on the Paul Bunyan and Heartland state trails. From Bemidji to Winona,
the MRT passes through five nationally designated Bicycle Friendly Communities and other
welcoming towns with unique attractions worth checking out. Whether biking the MRT
for an hour on a Nice Ride Minnesota bike-share rental, participating in an organized event
like the Saint Paul Classic or Tour de Pepin, or biking the entire length, it’s a great way to
explore the history (and mystery) of the river, the towns and the people along the route.
For more info: Riders have plenty of lodging options: camping at nine state
parks or other campgrounds, or staying at motels or bed-and-breakfast inns.
Print a detailed map, or download the map onto your smartphone or GPS
device on the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s website at
mndot.gov/bike/mrt. Another easy way to help you navigate the MRT?
Look for signs that have been installed along sections of the route.
Northern Section
Twin Cities Area
Southern Section
The route begins in Minnesota’s oldest state
park, Itasca State Park, where the Mississippi
River begins as a shallow stream surrounded
by towering ancient pine trees. You will travel
through the woods, cross the river many
times and pass numerous lakes on the way to
Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Brainerd, Little Falls
and St. Cloud, or choose the optional route
on state trails. After the Brainerd Lakes area,
the river widens and the land opens into the
serene countryside.
The river in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is
within the 72-mile-long Mississippi National
River Recreation Area, where you’ll find “Bicycle Friendly” Minneapolis and St. Paul, as
well as an abundance of natural and cultural
highlights. Bike paths offer picturesque river
views (don’t forget your camera). Stop in at a
riverfront restaurant, museum, park or festival. Consider exploring the region beyond the
river; all city buses and trains are equipped
with bike racks.
The scenic river towns of Red Wing, Lake
City, Wabasha and Winona are beautiful on
their own (think river bluffs), and make fun
stops for restaurants, shops and museums.
From Red Wing to Iowa, the route closely
follows the river and includes the steepest
section along the Apple Blossom Scenic Byway, with a climb to panoramic views of the
river valley. Linking to the MRT are several
challenging but scenic loop routes adjacent
to Lake Pepin and Winona.

Where’s your favorite place
to go to for bike gear/products?
Ski Hut in Duluth (they give me candy every
time I come in).

What advice do you have for someone
who hasn’t biked in a long time but
wants to get back out there again?
Wear a helmet because biking is so fun
and you get to go really fast, but only if
you’re safe.
Where’s your favorite place
in Minnesota to ride your bike? Why?
My favorite place to ride is on the mountain
bike trails at Lester Park in Duluth. It’s like a
roller coaster!
What’s been one of your
favorite cycling moments?
My favorite moment riding was when I was
on a trail and I went flying over a berm and
ended up riding through the woods until
I came to a sudden stop in a huge pile of
leaves! Poof! My mom was really scared but
I was like, “THAT WAS SO FUN!!!”
What’s the longest ride
you’ve taken on your bike?
At Nordic North Stars (a Duluth kids MTB
and cross-country ski group), we ride
around for hours!
What do you love most about this sport?
It’s like flying.

Being a Bicycle Friendly Community
means more than creating uninterrupted rail
corridors connecting to other trails, making
sure city buses and trains have bicycle-carrying
capabilities, and requiring office buildings to
provide bicycle storage.
Earning this coveted distinction involves
education, engineering, encouragement,
enforcement and evaluation—in other words,
the “five E’s” established by the League of
American Bicyclists (LAB) used to assess
the bike environment and culture of a
community. LAB ranks communities in those
categories, and then recognizes those that
meet their criteria with a gold, silver or bronze
designation.
This awards and recognition system worked
so well that it was adopted by the Bicycle
Alliance of Minnesota (BikeMN), and so far
it’s been great for the state. According to
Dorian Grilley, executive director of BikeMN,
15 Minnesota communities were ranked as

Bicycle Friendly as of 2014: 14 at the bronze
level and Minneapolis at the gold.
This ranking, he says, is more a quality of
life ranking. Biking is good for your health,
the environment and economic development
(people want to live in bikeable/walkable
communities, making property more valuable).
He stresses that this program is not about
being anti-car; it’s about making bicycling a
safe and convenient choice for transportation
and recreation. It can best be summed up in the
BikeMN brochure, he explains, in a paragraph
simply titled “Dream”:
“Imagine a system of bike routes connecting
communities that have their own internal
systems of on-road routes, off-road trails and
protected bikeways. What if school children
could safely walk or bike to school and were
taught bike safety, riding skills and the rules
of the road as part of their school curriculum?
Wouldn’t it be cool if cycling was a middle and
high school sport?
Think of a culture where bicycle commuting
is welcomed by businesses. Our dream is for
every Minnesotan to see these great things
happening in their own community.”
