Digestion is the body’s way of breaking down food, in the stomach and in the intestines; some of this food is used by the body and the rest is excreted, as waste. This is a sensitive physical process and, if anything gets out of synch, the entire body can feel the effect of it. Over time, sluggish digestion can become a chronic problem. It can cause anxiety and also physical discomfort with complaints like bloating, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence and nausea being commonly cited. Why not give The Sunsweet 14-Day Challenge a go, by drinking 120ml of prune juice, daily? We’re sure that you’ll reap the benefits and feel fabulous, as a result. What are the benefits of Sunsweet prune juice? • Sunsweet prune juice is a natural source of potassium that supports a healthy nervous system, contributes to normal muscle function and helps to maintain normal blood pressure. There could be a number of reasons why your digestive system is working less than optimally. And, of course, there are a number of potential solutions to the problem. But drinking Sunsweet prune juice more regularly is a deliciously simple place to start! • Sunsweet prune juice is naturally free from saturated fat. Reducing the consumption of saturated fat helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels. • Sunsweet prune juice contains only naturally-occurring sugars and is a source of fibre. Prune juice has a high sorbitol content that is believed to aid digestion and to offer relief from the symptoms of a sluggish system. And the additional vitamins and minerals that Sunsweet prune juice contains can also boost overall health. • And we believe that Sunsweet prune juice tastes great. Try it – by taking part in our challenge - and see if you agree! Dwayne is retired and lives in Dublin. He describes his health as “very bad” but considers his diet to be “quite good” and tries to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Like many older people, he suffers from constipation and took part in the Sunsweet challenge to see if it would improve his digestion. Dwayne already enjoyed Sunsweet prunes from time-to-time and so, “the taste of the Sunsweet juice was not a surprise to me, in fact I enjoyed it, especially cold from the fridge”. He drank it in the evenings, too, mixed with diet lemonade and described the taste as “refreshing”. He started to notice positive changes in his digestive function after just one week and said, “I felt better. Apart from drinking the 120ml of prune juice per day, I did not change my routine or diet. I wanted to see if the juice works as claimed. It definitely worked for me.” Feel Fabulous ~ Case Studies TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 14 NGE DAY CHALLE 4 Our Top 5 Tips For getting even more out of the Feel Fabulous challenge Healthy living. There are some great DVDs and videocasts out there. There are some people who can hop straight out of bed in the morning, who can whistle – cheerfully - as they go about their preparations for the day. OK, so there probably aren’t too many of those very lucky people around. For the rest of us, getting up – and getting going - in the morning can be that little bit tougher. It can feel as though we’re rudely awoken by our alarms before being launched – unceremoniously – into the day and a relentless round of must-dos; getting ourselves showered and dressed, getting our children up and dressed, preparing packed lunches, bracing ourselves for the commute, for the school run… Make sure that you make time for breakfast. There’s a good reason why it’s known as the most important meal of the day. A well-balanced breakfast – one that includes plenty of fibre, protein and fluid – will set you up for the day. Check out the recipes and serving suggestions in this guide, for inspiration. Get yourself organised and plan ahead. Make a list of all the things that you’d like to achieve on any given day. Be realistic but make sure that you include all the little things, too. If you’ve got everything written down, you won’t need to worry about forgetting anything. And, you’ll get a great feeling of satisfaction when you get all those tasks ticked off your list! Like any complex piece of kit, we human beings work better when we’ve had chance to warm up a bit. So it can be a good idea – though admittedly it may not feel like it, at first – to set your alarm just that little bit earlier, giving you the opportunity to factor in some positive morning routines to help you to get your day off to the right start. But it is an important contributory factor to our overall sense of wellness. And who knows? Being able to wear your favourite pair of jeans again - or simply being able to enjoy the sensation of feeling lighter - could be just the motivation that you need, to re-prioritise your digestive health. Here are four simple ways to boost it: Frequent physical activity can help to regulate digestion - and it works wonders for your metabolism, too. 4. Taking Time-Out Listening to music, catching up with a friend, reading a good book, meditating or simply breathing deeply are all excellent ways to soothe away stress. And relax… 1. Eating Fibre Fibre rich foods are an excellent digestion booster and can promote overall health and even prevent disease. 2. Drinking More Dehydration can cause constipation, headaches and fatigue; an excellent reason to include plenty of fluids – especially caffeine-free options like fruit juices, water and herbal teas – in your diet. Feel Fabulous ~ Challenge Tips An infusion of fresh ginger and honey – taken 15 minutes before eating – can assist digestion Eat prunes daily; a simple way to boost your intake of fibre Prune juice is a source of fibre and sorbitol; both known for their digestion-boosting properties TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 9 14 NGE DAY CHALLE Recipe Mango Madness Smoothie Ingredients • 1 orange • 1 mango stoned, peeled and chopped • 120 – 125ml Sunsweet® Prune Juice • 100g low fat natural yoghurt • 100ml semi-skimmed milk Link to recipe Instructions 1. Yorkshire student, Tina, describes her general health as “excellent” but her diet as “just ok”. Her digestive system “could be better” as she experienced constipation on a fairly regular basis. While taking the juice, Tina noticed that she had to go to the loo more frequently but that the process was easier with much less straining than before. She also found the juice delicious and said she “felt lighter”. For those thinking of giving the Sunsweet challenge a go, Tina says, “Try it and you’ll love it!” Feel Fabulous ~ Case Studies TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 14 NGE DAY CHALLE 10 Tip 3 Master the art of healthy snacking Although nutritionists give it the thumbsup, when it comes to snacking, all foods are far from equal. fruit is an excellent option that keeps well and satisfies the sweetest of teeth. Just a little of what you fancy can do you the world of good. So, if you’re desperately craving chocolate, treat yourself to a couple of squares of the really good stuff. Indulge yourself. Savour it. But remind yourself that this is just a little treat to tide you over until mealtime and don’t eat the whole bar! If you snack wisely, it can be a convenient way to include additional servings of healthy foods in your everyday diet. A few wholegrain crackers, for example, topped with cottage cheese and fruit – whether its fresh or dried – is a well-balanced snack that provides a range of important nutrients. Make sure that any drinks that you choose pack a punch, nutritionally. Some fruit juices, for example, are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Become an avid reader of labels and choose your beverages wisely. Keeping healthy, grab-and-go options close to hand – whether they’re in your desk drawer, your handbag or your glove-box - can help you to resist the unhealthy temptations of the vending machine or the convenience store. Dried Dawn is a part-time PA, living in Somerset. She’d never tried Sunsweet prune juice before. She has a “quite good” lifestyle with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and exercise. Although her general health is very good, she regularly suffers from acid reflux, one of the symptoms of a sluggish digestion. She took part in the Sunsweet challenge to see if the juice would help her digestive system function better and “improve regularity”. She describes the taste of the juice as “wholesome” and drank it chilled, before breakfast, every day for 14 days. After a few days she noticed her bowel movements were more frequent, leaving her feeling “more relaxed” with a “little more energy” than usual. Dawn said, “Sometimes you need a push to try something different. You could feel so much better inside and out. Try it, you may be surprised!” Feel Fabulous ~ Case Studies TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 11 14 NGE DAY CHALLE Recipe Nutty Mango Smoothie Ingredients • 1 mango • 500g yoghurt • 250ml Sunsweet® Prune Juice • 2 tablespoons honey • 2 tablespoons pistachio kernels • 2 tablespoons chopped almonds Link to recipe Instructions 1. His diet is excellent with 3-4 portions of fruit each day. But, despite his good efforts, Julian suffers from constipation and bloating and said that his digestion was “average”. He described the taste of Sunsweet prune juice as “delicious” and drank it from the fridge - every morning and night - for 14 days. Julian described feeling “less bloated” and “brilliant” during the challenge and said, “Try it, you will like it and it really does make a difference.” Feel Fabulous ~ Case Studies TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 14 NGE DAY CHALLE 12 Tip 4 Manage your stress levels These days, a certain element of stress seems to be part and parcel of everyday life, just one of those things. Stress may be unavoidable but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be manageable. From a physical point of view, the arguments in favour of regular exercise are compelling. But there are stressbusting benefits, too. Choosing an activity that you really enjoy – whether it’s gardening, dancing or jogging – helps to brighten your outlook and reduce stress. A win-win situation, then, however you look at it. A wide network of friends, family and colleagues is essential for your mental well-being. Supportive relationships can offer an emotional safety net for the bad times and a personal fan-club for the good times. Being empathetic and emotionally available to others can help us to put our own problems into perspective, too. There’s nothing quite like the feeling that comes from being kind to somebody else! Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, when you spot the opportunity for a mini-break, take it. • If you’re at work, push yourself back from your desk every hour or so and give yourself a hand massage. Using a hand lotion that’s rich in aromatherapy oils will heighten the experience. • Sit down with a cuppa and take a few minutes to really enjoy the experience rather than drinking it, onthe-go. • Brush up on your breathing technique; just a couple of minutes of deep breathing – whenever it’s needed - can help to soothe the most frazzled of heads. • And enjoy the countless positive moments in the day – from simple things like someone holding open the door for you - while, wherever possible, letting go of the negative ones. TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 13 14 NGE DAY CHALLE Recipe Apple Nutmeg Smoothie Ingredients • 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped • 3 ounces (90ml) apple juice • ½ Cup (120ml) Sunsweet® Prune Juice • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg Instructions Link to recipe Serves 2 1. Tip: Adding cinnamon or cardamom is nice change in place of the nutmeg. Pavlina lives in Suffolk, works part-time and has a good diet and healthy lifestyle. “I eat pretty healthily and drink silly amounts of water and green tea. I exercise most days of the week, yet I still suffer from constipation and a bloated tummy.” She wanted to try Sunsweet prune juice to see if it would improve any of her symptoms of a sluggish digestion; heartburn, nausea and acid reflux. She described the taste of the juice as refreshing, sweet and wholesome. And, after just a few days of taking the juice, noticed an improvement in her pre-existing digestive conditions and said she was more “regular”, felt “less bloated” and “lighter”. Feel Fabulous ~ Case Studies TRY OUR FEEL BRILLIANT 14 NGE DAY CHALLE 14 Tip 5 Stay well rested A good night’s sleep is crucial for both physical good health and emotional wellbeing. In fact, sleep deprivation has been linked to conditions as diverse as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Screen-time – whether it’s the TV, laptop or smart-phone – can be too stimulating, close to bedtime. A calming, undemanding book can be a better bet; relaxing you, tiring your eyes and putting some distance between you and the day. Although regular exercise helps to promote healthy sleep patterns, aerobic activity too close to bedtime can have the opposite effect. So save the strenuous stuff for earlier on in the day. Babies aren’t the only ones who benefit from a bedtime routine. Choose a regular bedtime – one that fits with your schedule – and try to stick to it, even at the weekends. A relaxing routine – whether it’s sipping a warm drink in your pyjamas or listening to soothing music – can help you to get your body and mind into the right gear for rest, too. A light and well-balanced dinner - at least two to three hours before bedtime – will ensure that you’re pleasantly full, without feeling bloated, so you won’t wake up with an attack of the nighttime nibbles. Ditch the caffeine and the alcohol, too. Herbal teas or warm, milky drinks are much more conducive to help you get a good night’s sleep. And finally, make your bedroom into a peaceful and uncluttered haven. A dark, quiet, comfortable and cool room is the best environment for sleep. The perfect remedy for a good night! High fibre snack foods - with just a little protein and fat – help regulate blood sugar levels Feel Fabulous ~ Challenge Tips Find ways to de-stress – by reading or listening to music, perhaps – to help avoid digestive problems Regular exercise can improve your mood and boost energy levels – a double bonus!
