1. Introduction
There is no need to compromise on quality for smaller screens.
The SRX-R515P brings the benefits of true 4K digital cinema projection to small and medium screens
and is ideal for independent cinemas. It will be the first commercially available DCI compliant digital
cinema projector to utilise cost efficient high pressure mercury lamps to achieve DCI specification
colour performance as an alternative to xenon lamps.
The SRX-R515P joins the existing SRX-R320 projection system in the Sony range of 4K digital cinema
projectors.
The SRX-R515P has the same 4K resolution (4096 x 2160 pixels) quality of the larger SRX-R320P
projection system and benefits from a new optical engine to deliver an unparalleled contrast ratio
performance of average 8,000:1 for accurate display of details in low light areas of the picture.
The new projection system utilises a 4K integrated media block along with an external RAID storage
unit giving 4TB capacity. A greater number of movies and other content can be held to enable many
different programmes to be scheduled from the same projector each day.
The SRX-R515P also utilises dual lens technology for 3D exhibition. However, please note that the 2D
and 3D lenses used by the SRX-R320/R220 are not compatible with the SRX-R515P. A new lens
range is being introduced for the SRX-R515P.
Details of 3D lenses for the SRX-R515P will be covered in a later document.
The SRX-R515P is currently targeted for delivery from late January 2013 onwards. Please check with
your Sony representative for updates to this schedule.
NOTE: At the time of launch, the SRX-R515P will not operate with Sony TMS until Version1.6
for the TMS expected launch April 2013.

Lens Changer Table LKRA-008
Displaying the unique “easy-on-the-eye” 3D images delivered by Sony projection systems requires the
3D dual lens to be fitted. 3D movies are created at 2K resolution and Sony 4K projectors display Left
and Right eye images in native 2K resolution when the 3D dual lens is fitted.
It is recommended that the standard 2D lens is fitted to the projector when displaying 2D content – to
correctly display 4K movies as well as 2K movies up-converted to best match the quality of the 4K
SXRD display device.
Sony has developed the Lens Changer Table concept to make the mechanical change-over between
2D and 3D lenses on the SRX-R515P projector simple and quick.
The LKRA-008 Lens Changer Table attaches to the two front legs of the projector chassis.and is
supported by two legs extending to the floor. The two legs are adjustable in length to match the height
position of the projector in each installation.
The procedure for changing lenses is as follows:
• The 2D and 3D lens each sit on a carriage that can
slide across the Lens Changer Table in front of the
projector
• The lens that s not required is parked off to one
side
• The desired lens is slid into the central position on
the table in line with the lens mount and then slid
back to mount the lens in the projector chassis
• The bayonet mount lever is pulled into the locked
position
The operation of the LKRA-008
Lens Changer table can be viewed
in the ‘Demystifying 4K’ webcast

media block provides unrivalled true 4K images.
•
Easy-on-the-eye Sony 3D performance with no flashing
Sony’s unique dual lens system displays 3D movies at their native 2K resolution. The dual
lens combined with 3D technology projects the Left and Right eye images simultaneously to
achieve crisp 3D images, giving none of the flashing issues associated with systems that use
“triple flash” 3D image technology.
•
High contrast for life like images
The SRX-R515 optical engine can deliver high contrast images, average 8,000:1, by reducing
leaked light giving a more life-like image with very dark blacks.
•
Cost effective lamp technology ensures easy and safe lamp replacement
The SRX-R515 is powered by an array of six high pressure mercury lamps for high quality
brightness and improved durability. The system keeps running if one of the lamps fails and
individual lamps are easy and safe to replace – no safety suit is needed.

4. Features
4.1 Outstanding 4K image quality with average 8,000:1 contrast ratio
There is no need to compromise on image quality for smaller screens.
The SRX-R515 projector provides images conforming
to the DCI specification’s 4K image format of (4096 x
2160) pixels together with an improved optical system
delivering high contrast ratio performance, average
8,000:1, by reducing leaked light.
This exceptionally high contrast performance provides
deep blacks and enables detail in dark areas of the
picture to be reproduced accurately.
The imaging device used in the SRX-R515 is the SXRD (Silicon Crystal Reflective Display) panel
which uses Sony’s own precision developments in LCoS technology.
Sony’s SXRD panel technology is one of only two display technologies meeting the strict standards to
be approved for use in digital cinema. Images from three SXRD panels, used for the Red, Green and
Blue image channels, are combined into one picture by the projector’s optical system and projected by
the main lens. 4K images have four times the resolution of 2K images and all optical parts used in the
Sony 4K projectors and 2D lenses are designed to reproduce the finest details in true 4K images.
4.2 Easy-on-the-Eye 3D
The SRX-R515 projector employs the same dual lens technology for displaying 3D as the SRX-R320
and earlier SRX-R220.
3D movies comprise Left eye and Right eye channel images at 2K resolution. The SRX-R515 projector
can map both Left and Right eye images simultaneously onto its 4K resolution SXRD display panel
and display them using a unique dual lens system.
This display method is more natural for the human visual system than alternative methods such as
“triple flash”, resulting in Easy-on-the-Eye 3D enjoyment.
A new range of dual lenses for 3D, matching the new optical engine and lens mounting system, will be
available for the SRX-R515P for use with filters from 3D technology providers.

4.3 High pressure mercury lamps - low running costs, high resilience
The SRX-R515 is to be the first commercially available DCI compliant digital cinema projector to utilise
high pressure mercury lamps to achieve DCI specification colour performance as an alternative to
xenon lamps.
Xenon lamp brightness level decreases rapidly over time and the projector lamp power needs to be
increased frequently to compensate for this. High pressure mercury lamp brightness does not drop off
so rapidly.
The lamps are supplied by Sony.
•
Choice of lamps to match brightness
A set of 6 x lamps together with a light combining system form the projector’s light source. A
choice of lamp sizes is available to best match individual screen conditions;
• 6 x 450W lamps provide an overall, maximum brightness of 15,000 lm (100% power)
• 6 x 330W lamps provides an overall, maximum brightness of 11,000 lm (100% power)
•
Simplified lamp replacement
Each lamp is supplied complete with its own, individual lamp housing and because high
pressure mercury lamps have a lower internal pressure, there is no need to wear a protective
suit and mask to carry out a lamp change.
•
Resilient multi-lamp system
The use of multiple lamps provides a high degree of resilience. In the event of a lamp failure,
the show can continue at a slightly reduced light level. The faulty lamp can be quickly
replaced after the show.
Each of the 6 lamps has its own power supply providing added resilience against the unlikely
event of a lamp power supply failure.

configuration with light combiner
system (left).

•
Lower cost compared with equivalent xenon light source
High pressure mercury is a lower cost lamp technology than Xenon lamps in terms of lamp life
overall costs (cost per hour).
•
•

4.4 Fast ingest and large storage capacity
Content ingest and storage is extremely flexible. Ingest – the up-loading of content onto the projection
system’s RAID storage – operates at high speed and from a selection of sources. The SRX-R515P
system can ingest content via three input methods;
Ingest options for XCT-10S
•
CRU dataport - CRU hard disk drives shipped by
distributors can plug directly into the XCT-S10
storage unit chassis for ingest onto the unit’s RAID
storage
•
USB 3.0 - the XCT-S10 storage unit has two USB
3.0 ports allowing for rapid ingest of content from
USB hard drives and memory sticks
•
Ethernet - the XCT-S10 unit ingests content from a
TMS server over ethernet
The targeted ingest speed for USB and network ingest is 30 minutes for 160GB movie
The XCT-S10 has a storage capacity of 4TB as standard with the option to upgrade to 8TB (expected
April 2013). The RAID is configured as 7 x 1TB HDDs. One HDD is a hot spare with 6 x HDD
configured for approx. 4TB useable storage as well as parity data.
The large storage capacity makes the system particularly useful for cinemas that need to store a large
number of movies, trailers and adverts to cater for different show play lists throughout the same day.
4.5 Connection to windows shared folder, FTP and Sony cinema servers
The SRX-R515P has the facility to set up and access external folders for the following options:
•
Network shared folder – a windows-shared folder allows the ingest and export of DCPs,
ingest KDMs, import and export SPLs and Schedules, import and export setting data and
export a log file
•
FTP - can be used to ingest and export DCPs
•
Server – connection can be establish to other Sony digital cinema servers (LMT-200/LMT300/XCT-S10) to ingest and export DCPs

4.6 Remote operation of the projection system via PC
The projection system can be controlled from a PC from a remote point away from the projector
location e.g. wireless operation when adjusting zoom, focus and colour space conversion during
installation.
Connect a wireless router to the CTRL ethernet connector on the XCT-S10 external server. Using
Firefox version 14 or above on a PC connected to the wireless router, enter
https://xxx.xxx.x.xx/EvansGUI/run.html into the address bar of Firefox (where xxx.xxx.x.xx is the
network IP address of the projection system.
The standard SRX-R515P operator GUI (as seen on the touch panel) will then be available to operate
from the PC.
4.7 New lens range with bayonet mount
The SRX-R515P system utilises a new 2D lens range* based on the same true 4K optical quality used
by the SRX-R320 but matched to the projector’s new optical engine. The new lenses also utilise a
bayonet mount with quick lock/release mechanism. Due to the new optical back focus and lens
mounting systems, the SRX-R320 lenses are NOT compatible with the SRX-R515 projector.
The large f2.5 aperture lenses are made from
Extra Low Dispersion (ELD) glass to display the
super fine detail in 4K images.
The new design of lens mount on the projector
chassis has manual horizontal and vertical shift
adjustment knobs which should only be used
during installation.
*A new range of 3D lenses for the SRX-R515P will be covered in a separate document.

10
4.8 15” touch screen with new GUI*
The SRX-R515P features a new 15” XGA colour touch screen controller running a new graphic user
interface.
As cinemas move over to full digitisation, Theatre
Management Systems (TMS) are being installed to
provide more efficient, centralised, content management
and workflow across a large number of screens. The
Screen Management System Control (SMS-C) software
for the SRX-R515P has been designed to provide
greater commonality with Sony’s TMS user interface
layout for managing content and creating a complete
show schedule. This commonality makes it easier for
operators to swap between TMS and local projector
operation.
Unlike the SRX-R320 and SRX-R220, the new SRX-R515P will not use a separate SRX-Controller
application for installation and maintenance set up. This functionality has been included in the
projection system’s touch panel controller with password protection to limit access to trained
engineering staff.
4.9 Re-usable filters
As an additional reduction in cost of ownership, the SRX-R515P will feature re-usable filters that can
be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner. In the event of contamination from other materials it will be
possible to wash the filters using a diluted liquid detergent.
Air filters should be cleaned every 2,000 hours. However, individual installation conditions may require
more frequent cleaning of the filters.
Air filters are located:
1. Above the 3 lamps on each side of
the projector
2. On the side of the chassis next to the
optical block
3. Behind the front panel of the XCTS10 external server unit

5. Standard Features
The following describes many standard features available on all Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection
systems including the SRX-515P.
5.1
Displays 4K and 2K movies and HD video
Sony 4K media blocks replay both 4K and 2K resolution DCPs (movie files). 2K movie files in 2D at
(2048 x 1080) pixels are automatically up-converted to 4K equivalent images by the projector. Sony
4K projectors display 2K movies in 2D to their best advantage due to the up-conversion process. Upconverted content benefits from the smaller pixel size of the 4K projector compared with 2K projectors
and the tiny gaps between pixels on the Sony SXRD display device resulting in a more natural image.
Sony 4K projectors have the facility to input “Alternative Content” allowing High Definition video to be
input directly into the projector head. 2D High Definition video at (1920 x 1080) pixels from a number
of Alternative Content sources such as Blu-ray players, games consoles and satellite receivers will
also be automatically up-converted to 4K equivalent images by the projector.
5.2
Easy-on-the-Eye single-projector 3D performance
Due to the high data rates involved, 3D movies are always released at 2K resolution. 3D movies are
not released as 4K DCPs.
This allowed Sony to take a new approach to single-projector 3D presentation by utilising the ultrahigh resolution of its SXRD 4K image display panel.
The most commonly used single-projector solutions for cinema utilise the ‘triple-flash’ technique to
project the Left and Right eye images in succession through a single lens. This involves taking the Left
and Right eye images for each movie frame and repeating them alternately at three times the server
playback rate during the projection process. The x3 increase in display frame rate is chosen to be at a
high enough level that the viewer should not perceive the flicker between alternating Left and Right
eye images out of the same lens. The process requires the viewer’s brain to do the work to integrate
the rapid, alternating display of Left and Right images into a single image.
The Sony single-projection solution for 3D uses a unique dual lens to simultaneously display both Left
and Right eye images on the screen. The viewer is presented with the Left and Right eye images overlaid so the brain is not required to work to integrate two images together as with the triple flash system.
The Left and Right images from the 3D content are simultaneously displayed at their native 2K
resolution (2048 x 1080 pixels) on the 4K SXRD display panel at their native frame rate of 24 frames
per second. The dual lens projects and converges the two images on the screen for Easy-on-the-Eye
3D.

5.3
Access panels
The SRX-R515P employs the same style of chassis and panel configuration as the SRX-R320P with
the chassis enclosed by side, front and rear panels locked down by a single locking panel. The key for
the top panel is unique to each projector.
The projector has access panels on each side to allow easy access to the 6 x high pressure mercury
lamps - 3 lamps located on each side of the projector – as well as the air filters. Operators can change
lamps and clean the re-usable filters without the need to open any main panels

11. Appendix
11.1 4K Resolution (4096 x 2160) pixels
Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors deliver true 4K resolution which is the highest image quality
standard defined by the DCI specification.
An increasing number of cinematographers are choosing to digitise their film negatives at 4K during
the movie post production process to capture every detail in the film image. Additionally, an increasing
number of leading movie makers are choosing to shoot with the new generation of 4K digital cameras
such as the Sony F65.
When the final movie file is released as a 4K DCP (Digital Cinema Package file) instead of 2K DCP
and exhibited on a 4K projector, then this super fine detail is preserved from camera right through to
cinema screen and the cinema audience gets to enjoy exactly the same experience as the director
and cinematographer.
•
Extremely high native resolution enables the accurate display of the very highest resolution
pictures to create more realistic images.
•
Small pixel size combined with small gaps between the pixels are critical to creating realistic
images, especially where audiences will be very close to the screen such as in auditoriums
with Stadium style seating. For any given screen size, pixels from Sony 4K projectors are
approximately ¼ the size of the pixels from 2K projectors to allow more detail to be displayed
and make the pixel structure of the projector invisible to the audience.

4K resolution offers additional benefits for movies
distributed in 2.39:1 format.
2K is often regarded as being (2048 x 1080)
pixels but this is a maximum figure and real
movies are distributed as 1.85:1 Flat at (1998 x
1080) active image pixels and 2.39:1 Scope at
(2048 x 858) pixels - which means the vertical
resolution in Scope is less than HDTV format
images which are (1920 x 1080) pixels.
4K images in both Flat and Scope formats are
always well above the resolution of HDTV
regardless of image format and always offer
much greater detail than the best HDTV pictures.
